Just saw the videos from the htc desire Z and wow. The main thing I want is that htc fast boot. It literally took the phone 4 seconds to boot up. You think we will ever see the light of day on that for our Evos?
Is that an Evo in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Link to vid?

damn - that is fast. But my takeaway from that vid is the fact that lansdcape sense should now be doable.
Yea. If they can do it for sliders it shouldn't be too hard to do it officially for our phones. Love that boot up speed...

I was more excited about landscape sense. The fastboot is defiantly cool but a feature that isn't too useful since my phone is pretty much always on.

I was sort of hoping maybe Sprint & HTC would do an update for the EVO . Since we have a kickstand and all.

Exactly - Although at this point I'm too attached to launcherpro to go back to sense, the fact that I couldn't use sense in landscape with the kickstand is what pushed me to launcherpro in the first place.
Yeah that fast boot was pretty impressive.
All sorts of HTC love going on today. Wild.

here's hoping they update us (wont be holding my breath)

I don't have the audio so please correct me if I'm wrong; but to me it looked like they demonstrated the startup time for Sense, not the whole phone. i.e. Android will still take its usual time to start up, it's just the Sense portion of it (the very last part before you see the unlock screen) will be faster. If that's true, overall it will be a marginal improvement.

HTC GUY: And that's the boot, its ready to use.
Camera Guy: Was that the whole boot
HTC GUY: Yes, we've done a lot to improve boot time etc.
So I'm guessing it is the boot time.
I want landscape sense!!!!!! Now!!!!! Lol... When can I haves it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
While some have noticed that the "fastboot" was incredibly fast another video showed the phone booting up and taking longer.
Read somewhere, was a couple hours ago, that a reboot was the speedier of the two, not necessarily powering up a cold phone. Is that the case? Maybe I misread, but I forgot where I saw it so I can't really go back and read again ... maybe I missed something. And I probably did, have been drinking.
Pretty impressive I hope this comes to the EVO.
why do you guys want landscape sense? don't see a use for it. But I do like the new status bar and the customization as well.
I would like landscape sense because, if I were to be using a sense ROM, I constantly hold the phone in landscape. So when I go from here to homescreen I have to turn the phone, which is incredibly taxing for me rolleyes and this would solve the issue.
As it stands, have used CM6 damn near the whole time it's been out, but I understand why people want it. A buddy got his new Evo and this was something I noticed. He'd go from portrait to landscape to portrait to landscape and he was like, dude, this is getting old. I had to agree with him. I know the widget solution ... yeah, sure, but it looks awkward.
Ah hope this is released for evo.. looks great.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.
This has to be released for the Evo, its HTC sense.. so it should arrive on the incredible too.. if they only choose 1ghz devices. What I'm wondering is how and when will this be implemented.
They're launching htcsense.com next month, maybe this will include updates for in use devices.

That's just a defective phone, and your second one is also defective. It happens... it could happen with the Evo too.
Whether I'd say someone should switch depends on what you like and dislike about both phones. Why did you buy an Epic in the first place? Have those reasons suddenly changed? Is uploading faster than 150kbps right now more important than any of the reasons why you bought the phone to begin with?
If you've decided you like the Evo better, then switch. I wouldn't switch because of a relatively minor GPS issue with an easy workaround, and I personally wouldn't switch because of this upload cap (I have yet to have it cause me a problem), although if you're a heavy uploader, then maybe... then again, it's probably going to get fixed at some point and then you might feel pretty dumb.
I bought an Epic because of the keyboard, so unless the phone was basically non-functional, there's no way I'd want to switch to an Evo. If you like the Evo better, though, then go for it. I just don't know why someone would buy an Epic in the first place if they really wanted an Evo, though.
Switching to the EVO would be even more depressing than the problems the Epic is experiencing. I mean the processor on the EVO is soooo outdated.
I'm sticking with the Epic.
lol i remember when evos snapdragon was all the rage haha
but yeah upload speeds fluctuating signal where my hero didnt have that problem yes battery life
i chose the epic because of the keyboard and its the only thing keeping me from exchanging
I'm in the same boat. Only thing that bugs me is battery life, and e-mail not updating at the specific times that I set.

You have this too? I just posted a Q about this - no luck fixing it yet?
now while the snapdragon may not be as fast as the hummingbird, its no slowpoke either. My nexus NEVER slowed down unless an app froze it. Other than that it flew. The main bottleneck in the snapdragon chipset is the freakin sucky adreno gpu.

I'm sure it's happening to almost everybody. Sometimes a mail squeeks by, most of the time it doesn't. Otherwise, when I enter one of my many inboxes, it shouldn't start checking for mail... LAME.

The snapdragon might have been "all the rage" back in january when it was put in the nexus one... but when it was still being used when the EVO rolled, I was a little upset. Yeah, I'm mainly talking about the GPU. The hummingbird isn't that much faster than the snapdragon sans GPU... but it is a LITTLE bit. Considering iPhones have always had some sort of GPU in them, I figured android would too. It's nice that the anroid manufacturers are finally catching on.
The Epic has video codecs as well. Combined with the GPU, high definition videos are a breeze to watch without having to convert This is a Godsend for me.

I agree that Swype is wayyyy better than just typing in a touch keyboard and I'm so happy that it came with (I couldn't deal with my bf's touch keyboard so I knew I needed a physical one) but there are just some things that are better with a keyboard.
Does anyone use it? Because I was just wondering if other people found that it skips letters sometimes? Gets a little annoying when I'm typing a longer e-mail of sorts. When I had a Rant, I remember having to almost break it in before all of the keys were at the same sensitivity. (Namely just the Y key...I almost returned it, got lazy, and it just got better on its own...used to have to stop and smash it in to get it to work.) Anyone else have minor keyboard issues?
Personally I have no problems with the hardware keyboard and missing letters. I use the hardware keyboard for anything over a sentence or so. But yeah no problems for me. Maybe I just got lucky

I use it all the time, and never had it skip letters unless it was my fault for not hitting them properly. I love the keyboard but it's still not perfect for me; the letters are maybe a little too far apart, so I sometimes hit in between two letters. Can't really fault the phone for that, though; at least not the build.
It does seem like the space bar actually has two buttons under it (like it's a double length key, so it gets two standard key buttons), and I seem to hit it twice sometimes if I roll my thumb a little bit when I press it. But other than that, I have no problems with the functionality of the keyboard, I just need to get used to the key spacing. I'm coming from an HTC Fuze, which had all the letters jammed up right next to each other.

I mainly chose this phone over the Evo for it's lack of Sense UI. I've had the HTC Hero before it was even released to the public, and an Evo is just an oversized, super fast version of that... No thanks.
I like AOSP style text, e-mail, and speed. Gotta thank Darch for that one.
the keyboards the main reason lol
but i use launcherpro plus on my epic as i hate you cant remove icons from the dock in touchwiz did the same when i had the hero even with sense still on it was noticably faster same on evo if i had it..........but i am eagerly awaiting 2.2 and roms and such
and yes the lack of mms on wifi annoying very as the hero could
So my evo is starting to act up, wondering if the epic would be a viable replacement?
Anyone done this or have any input on it?
Mostly use my phones for the tether, texting and killing time at work.
Thanks for any help!

Not much of an upgrade unless you want the keyboard or a slightly better screen if you ask me. If your phone is acting up it may be software related? Try flashing a different ROM or something
Could be rom, but Im thinking the meeting with the concrete today may have something to do with it to be honest.
Could be warranty time. Lol.
I'll try a different Rom in a bit.
Cyanogen mod time.
But nothing really better than the evo then?

The Epic is better then an EVO overall..but it boils down to is it worth for you to spend money buying a new one...
your usage is mostly fairly simple, I guess you'd have better time texting if you use the physical kb I guess...or if by killing time you mean running high end games..then Epic would definitely be an improvement..
I mean what do you mean by "acting up" and "killing time"..be a bit specific?
I'll tell you this though Epic runs really awesome stock with little to no issues...

Let us answer that question after official froyo is released and/or Cyanogen mod is fully ported.
I have had 5 random restarts, seem to all happened during data usuage, but I haven't had random ones on this phone before. Trying to strain the phone some more now.
My usuage for my phone is mostly just the tether/wifi tether, facebook chat, texting, mp3 player occasionally, haven't really gotten into gaming on the phone.
I know it may me being paranoid... And I haven't bought a new phone in a while haha.
And anyone swype on their epic? Or is everyone all die hard keyboard?
Thanks everyone

I just recently got the epic over the evo, due to the beautiful screen and so far I'm thrilled. The Evo is a very nice phone and I'd say on par with the epic but the epic has the keyboard along with a super amoled screen. Some say the 8MP camera is a plus for the evo but personally I'd rather have a samsung 5mp than a htc 8mp, just due to their reputation. But both take beautiful pics, so it really comes down to is the keyboard and amoled with gorilla glass worth it for you? I rarely use the slide out, mostly swype, but for long emails, texts, etc the slide out is extremely useful!
So evaluate the pros / cons and see if its worth it for you! I'm more than happy I went with the epic!
Sincerely,
D3luSi0n4L
I agree with D3luSi0n4L, you just need to evaluate the pros/cons as they pertain to you. I'm overall pleased with my Epic because IMO the screen quality is superior and I like to have a physical keyboard (especially when traveling, Emulators play nicely with keyboards ) The only hangup with the Epic is the lackluster support from Samsung. If you really like playing with new ROMs and constantly tweaking your phone, then the EVO will be better for you. Lets face it, HTC phones just have more support behind them. Hell, even the Hero is still getting updates...
Like i said, figure out what's most important to you and go from there.
The epic is a viable replacement. Its noticeably smaller though, even if its only .3 inches. That might make a difference. Other than that its basically the same+keyboard. And froyo isn't out officially yet. and there's a considerable difference in development for the epic and evo...so you might wanna take that into account too, although stock dk28 froyo is good enough. I've been running it since it firs got leaked and my gps is perfect and everythin else works. Even the browser. Wen froyo is officially released, this phone will easily beat evo

Will have to agree with this statement. But again, this is MY OWN personal thoughts on it. I have both phones as well and I find myself using my EVO a lot more than my Epic. Not saying that the Epic is not a good phone because it is a good phone.
At the end of the day though, its all in what YOU want and what works best for YOU. Thats something no one can speak on. Either way, your in a win-win! GOOD LUCK!

A lot of people use swype..most ppl use kb for long messages and gaming...in my case I need kb for remote desktop programming in emergencies...I use on screen kb by default...but I do enjoy using the physical kb for when surfing the net..I so hate using the onscreen kb when surfing webpages on all phones in general..mostly since..
1) web is ment to be surfed vertical resolution anyways
2) the onscreen kb popping up is a mess that blocks my screen :/
hence the physical KB makes surfing the net more enjoyable for me at least..
If you would like to know what we got going over the EVO its:
1) Better processor
2) 3x better GPU
3) 6 axis accelometer
4) super amoled
5) keyboard
6) Better camera
7) Better Audio
8) Gorilla Glass
9) Built in video drivers such as xvid/divx/mkv etc
10) and more...
and probably a few other things I'm missing...I'm not saying the Epic has no flaws..but its definitely a step up hardware spec wise..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.

Thanks for the reply! LauncherPro has become essential, it's good to know it enhances the Android experience here too.
Just went from Evo > Nexus S 4g, and here are my brief notes.
-Nexus is faster, but not by much.
-Nexus screen makes the Evo's look washed out and soft by comparison. The Nexus has amazing blacks, which really makes a big difference in terms of clarity, apparent sharpness. (though the Nexus colors often look too saturated)
-Speaker sounds a lot better (playing music) It has more bass and generally sounds less tinny
-call quality is good. Loud and clear.
-The nexus is only a few days old, but thus far, the battery is not longer lasting than the Evo's. Hopefully that will improve after a couple weeks.
-screen seems slightly less responsive than the Evo's - resulting in an occational missed press. Overall it is very good though.
-on the down side, the screen does have a yellow/green tint (especially in the whites), and it bothers me.
-in terms of being more pocketable, in practive the 1.5oz weight difference is barely noticable, and the Evo seems more secure in the hand (robably because it has better texture on the back, and because of the extra weight.) So far the Nexus feels a little fragile and almost too light (thankfully though, it does not feel "hollow" like the Epic does.)
So far, I am not sure if I am going to keep the Nexus (purchased off of Craigslist for $350) or use my upgrade for the Evo 3D when it comes out. I am not leaing toward the new Evo - expecually since it will (hopefully) have improved battery performance, and that amazing new screen.
Stay tuned...
I have to disagree on the nexus speaker being louder than the Evo's..... Evo sounds much louder. Agree Evo screen is more responsive, despite colors being a little saturated nexus screen looks much better than the evo's. Also the nexus keyboard is very laggy when texting, I am using smart keyboard now.

I'm sorry but the aosp browser blows away the HTC sense browser.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sorry for the misunderatanding ,For some reason I can't get the nexus s browser to always display desktop sites, it always reverts back to mobile view. Anyone have this problem? I'm using the about:debug method.

Um...How?
(I noted that on the Evo pinch-zoom works much better, and the Evo's notification bar hides, giving you more screen real estate...)
As to the speed: sitting side-by-side on WiFi, the two browsers load pages at precisely the same speed.

I for one like being able to see the status bar while using the browser. I can check the time, check notifications, enable one of my power control options all without leaving the browser. Flash playback and page rendering feels much smoother and quicker than sense.

Mr. Dirty, how is the Nexus battery life for you?
Mine says the display is consuming 83% of the battery for some reason...
Also, do you disagree that the Evo browser is better? I hate that the notification bar does not go away on the Nexus browser. Also pinch zoom is much better on the Evo. I am about to root so I can use the Evo's browser instead...

Now that you mentioned it, that is the other thing I noticed is that pinch-to-zoom is horrendous on the Nexus. I use dolphin so I haven't compared stock-stock browser but yes, the Nexus browser disappointed me in the PTZ feature.

I don't know if you have an Evo, but what is nice about the browser's notification bar is that it is there when you need it, and gone when you don't!
If anyone is rooted and get's the Evo browser working on the Nexus, let me know.
I have not had the time to root yet...

If you need the notification bar its just a quick tap of the menu button away, no need to leave the browser...
I have to disagree that pinch to zoom is better on the evo. Its immensely smoother on the nexus.

I do have an EVO as I am posting from it. Once it disappears the only to get it back is to click a link, go back or refresh a page. That is not being there when I need it.

That's the main reason I don't like asop. And away from the nexus. Dolphin browser is the closest you'll get to the sense browser, but last time I used on on Cm7 it seemed buggy and frustrated me. Its not as smooth and polished as sense in comparison.

yeah, there is a few things that I'm not feeling about this nexus. Is there any way to bypass the 160 characters for text messaging? I hate the fact that it will stop and not auto split the messages, I have tried a few apps from the marketplace but whenever I send a message over 160 characters the message sent will be all symbols to the recipient.

Dolphin browser kills sense browser and all others out there by a landslide.

And miren. I prefer it over dolphin at this point (including the latest dolphin update)

My Nexus does NOT reflow the text properly after pinch-zoom, so you are stuck either panning back and forth, or using the + and - buttons.
As to the showing the status bar when needed on the Evo browser, simply pressing menu does the trick.

Evo browser relies on Sense framework, so it's a no go.
In theory possible, but no one has ever done any sort of Sense ports for a portion, only of the entire ROM.
I think there was a Sense Nexus S port, so it might be available later.
I'm in the stock browser camp, but understand how some might prefer the Sense browser. HTC knows how to make people keep buying their phones instead of switching manufacturers.
Nexus > Evo
As a follow-up:
Nexus issues:
-Build quality is no where near as good as the EVO (feels light weight and flimsy without a case, and with a case it does not feel any lighter, or much smaller than the Evo.)
-Nexus has terribly slow charging. Seriously it seems to take 5 or 6 hours to charge completely. Ouch.
-Nexus battery drains very fast (though I have only charged it maybe 15 times total, so maybe it will get better.) But this morning I went from 100% to 60% in two hours of light use (and no calls)!
-Nexus screen misses key strokes very often! It is simply less sensitive than the EVO and many times I need to re-press keys. Very annoying.
-The green/yellow screen is very annoying
-After making a few days of calls on the Nexus, the Evo has better call quality, and the speaker sounds clearer during calls. (thought the Nexus sounds better for music playback through the speaker phone)
-I miss the screen real estate - the larger type on the Evo (though less contrasty) is just easier to read.
So...the Nexus is now for sale. And I will be using my upgrade for the Evo 3d.
