How to achieve a FAST SGS with STOCK FROYO - Galaxy S I9000 General

To those, like me, who were disappointed with Froyo.
After doing a fair bit a tinkering and research experimenting for a month. I managed to find the BEST solution for people who don't want to use custom roms. Yet wanting a similar yet better mobile experience they had with 2.1 eclair.
After a factory reset.
Latest Voodoo Lagfix via Odin |or| ryanZA's OneClickLagFix your choice
1. root - z4root app from market.
2. ryanZA's OCLF app
- Alter minfree. Set to Aggressive
- Change Scheduler. Set to deadline
3. SGSTools.
- Upgrade stock apps.
+ Modded Contacts app showing all letters
+ Stock browser with useragent setting
+ Faster TouchWizLauncher(GTG) <--- TOUCHWIZ CAN't GET ANY SNAPPIER >
- GPS fix
Just like (2.1 with OLCF) Fast, snappy, loving it

u forgot to add:
+ use is for two weeks then redo the process

Best is to reboot everyday.

We don't have the same definition of "Stock"...
Anyway, I'm using jk4 now, realy stock (no root,no lagfix) and it's fast and fluid. What more do I need?? Higher benchmark? That's about the only reason I'd do a lag fix...!

Doing all of the above = might as well install Doc's ROMs

It's in the menu of SGSTools.

Before going modding, try some optimized kernels:

Unfortunately for me, I cant apply these settings even after reboot. I followed all teh procedure and it is still the same.

i changed the lounger to the modded one but it gave me a lot of forced closes. ..(not apps the lounger just force closed) so i had to fire my terminal thing up and change it back
kind of sad because it looked great and was butter smooth

you forgot to add something, hardcore's latest kernel improved GPS. i am able to lock up to 11 sat within 10 secs.

If your going to change the kernel, root, lagfix, gpsfix it ... why not just try for a custom ROM?
I do think we have different notions of the word "stock"

This isny "stock" at all... A good custom ROM like Doc's are more "stock" than this thing... Doc's stock!

How can it still be considered stock after applying all these tweaks??
A stock and fast SGS with Froyo is like the Loch Ness monster. It's a myth.

Tnx!
About the GPX Fix, does it only support North American and european countries?
And can I do other items in SGS tools like 3d Gallery etc.
@all
I Think what he's trying to say is having a faster SGS without flashing it with other ROM's...just like me, I'm still not in the state of flashing it because I'm still afraid: Man this phone is too expensive and I don't want to mess with it yet. Maybe a year later

Yes. The gallery fix in the sgs tools also fixes the battery drain bug which is caused by the sensor in the stock froyo's gallery app.
And yes this is for poeple who are not wanting to flash custom roms yet wanting the same stable fast performance.

SGS and Lagfixes are driving me up the wall

With all the new lagfix trial-and-error, my SGS is still lagging and not error free. I'm about to get rid of it, unless there's another solution to fix the Lag. Why did Samsung come up with this expensive unit, that runs slower than my HD2 running Android?
Stock 2.2 have been very smooth for me compared to the stock 2.1 ROM I am using. Ive found that the OCLF has been pretty good for me on 2.1, although does need a reboot every 250 hours or so.

which one would you recommend? i tried ADW and Launcher Pro and still experiencing laggy, especially when typing and looking up files. Any other inferior launchers would not look nice and defeats the purpose of having a "Samsung Galaxy S"

Thanks, but I have been using stock 2.2 as well. I tried OCLF, VooDoo and SpeedMOD and screwed up my SGS many times. Luckily, I was able to bring it back to life again.
UPDATE: I was able to flash XXJPA ROM via Kies using the 1.6 patch and installed Z4root & OCLF 2.2 and my Quadrant score is 1600+ on first run and 1900+ on second run. Hip Hip Hooray! will test it out for the next couple of days to see if it keeps up the speed.

Buggy Froyo DXJPA

Hello all, I updated my SGS to froyo DXJPA via kies about two weeks ago, and my overall impression is that this release is buggier than eclair.
After the update process was completed I did a factory reset, but still out feels buggy and clunkish. Apps FCed randomly, happened most of the time to twidroyd and gmail, the gallery does that too but not as often. Launcher pro's 3D app drawer does not run as smooth, and occasionally installed apps icons doesn't show up in the drawer.
I wonder, does these happen to anybody else? Is there any solution to these? Would you mind sharing your experience here? Thanks!

I assumed you were on a stock DX series ROM before the upgrade? I also upgraded DXJPA, but I did it via odin with repartitioning. While I agree that DXJPA is much more laggy compared to Eclair, I do not have any issues with apps FC-ing. My phone is also a lot faster and smoother after flashing to the kernel in my signature and applying the lagfix.

Battery life is quite bad actually. I lose on average 2-4% battery per hour, without doing anything. But some people have reported very good battery life with the kernel, so I am not sure if it's due to that. But the speed is really good, and since I charge my phone all the time, it doesn't really bothers me so much.

side note: your avatar's freaking me out man
To the OP,
I've upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 DXJPA and have not been having FC's (using 16 Gb stock Galaxy S and upgraded through Kies). I did install OCLF 2 and am using lag fix and the mem tool very early on. Been testing for stability by not installing too much but pretty am using as is now. Am also using Launcher Pro.
FYI, I was getting FC's before on 2.1 but I think this was because was starting to lag again. Anyway, all good now.
Z
You need to do factory reset to get rid off those FCs. Or, you can try to clear app data first. It works for me.
Edit: be sure to back up your data/rom first.
i`m just upgraded Eclair DXJG4 to DXJPA just a week...i`ve not seen any trouble on it and of course i`m upgrading it using Kies...the most dangerous way..
no problem about FC...maybe because i wiped all of my data after update...
before this i`m using OCLF but now i`m flashed my kernel using YA-OK! 1.40 @1.2ghz from zenkinz with stock DXJPA rom

2.2 vs 2.2.1 changes

Everyone wants 2.2.1 but what are the benefits over 2.2?
Reason I ask is that I updated from 2.1 to 2.2 last night. Feels much snappier so far.
Should we just be waiting for gingerbread?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I had Quadrant score 857 on stock Eclair (XWJM2). This went up to almost 1000 after I re-partitioned to XWJPA/XXJPP/OXAJPO. With XXJPX I have score of 1182. So I guess there is some improvement
I haven't been using 2.2 though, so I can compare only Quadrant score hereā€¦
The Quadrant leap is nothing to do with the fact that it is 2.2.1, but more the fact that Samsung finally got their **** together and made a new kernel and optimised the rom I believe.

The mail app is not laggy or slow anymore.
Performance on the phone is awesome
Camera/Video interface/menu a little different.
When caller calls you can press power to mute the ringer ... it was in 2.1 but not in the 2.2 ... now 2.2.1 its back
Battery seems to be better.
Gallery now shows most recent first. I don't know if there was ever a setting for that but its a biggie for me. Saves me scrolling through 500 odd pictures to find the one I just took.
And the phone is just so fast. I'm super happy with JPX

Also start up time is quick.
You can input UK post codes in the ZIP code field before it only allowed numbers.
Sound good, I'm waiting for stable Doc's XXJPX rom release

This feature was in 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.2.1 however in 2.1 you had to use vol down key and in froyo power button.
Cheers!
Boots up super quick now.
Performance has improved big time to the point where i havent even bothered reapplying a lag fix to it, as i cant see it making much of a difference now.
Its kinda sad really. I always liked messing with my phone but they have done such a good job with 2.2.1 that theres not really much to mess with now.
Some things ive noticed in 2.2.1
Quicker boot time
Better battery life
Advanced exchange email options (peak, non peak time)
Facebook sync notifications work flawlessly
Web browser speed improved over leaked JPU
Contact list has full A-Z
Separate wallpaper for lock screen.
Dont think it has been mentioned but you can now use the stock headphones to change songs via the mircophone. Double pressing in quick succession allows this.

hi,
anyone knows how to sort apps from A-Z. i have upgrade sgs from 2.2 to 2.2.1, and now all my apps are disorder?
thanks!
very good, but lag is there
The 2.2.1 update is pretty good actually. I'm impressed.
The lag is less visible, but it's still there. Especially for the NewsRob application which I use very frequently during the day.
It's very unlikely but I just hope that Samsung switches to ext4 like Nexus S did.
Games are smoother. I used to have occasional stutter.
If you are using stock 2.2 try the game Ant Smasher.
After installing 2.2.1, the game is smooth.
Installed the game on a friend's 2.2, the same lag appears.

Doesn't RFS generate lots of garbage (system error data) over time, which results in the system lag. EXT4 shouldn't do that... So isn't theres still some point in using a lagfix?
create a directory called media on the sd with a ringtones directory in that and move your rings there stops them showing in the music player. Just like the N1 does. Will probly work with nofification and alarms as well
I flashed JPX last night (over the top of full JPU), product code was KOR, used the dial method to change to XEU, factory reset and the battery drains really quick!
Anyone else experience this and know if there's a cause or fix?
I find the performance on 2.2.1 MUCH faster and smoother than 2.2 (JPO).
Stock browser in jpx only allows 4 pages instead of 8. Don't think it bothers me. I was always closing down pages anyway

List of difference between 2.2 and 2.2.1

Since alot of people have asked what is the major benefit/different of a 2.2.1 based ROM especially if you are coming from a 2.2 based rom. I decided to share my observation. Most of the changes are with the browser.
Browser:
-Hardware accelerated Scrolling (smooth scrolling even with Flash content).
-Better hardware accelerated Flash content (it is now possible to play certain mobile optimized high definition (HD) content)
Ex. Try it at Gametrailers.com, and goto Desktop Site then select an HD video.
-Slightly faster javascript performance.
Ex. Test at Sunspider Javascript Bench
Wallpaper:
-Differentiable wallpaper for lock screen vs. home screen
Gmail:
-2.2.1 has support for better authentication and prioritized inbox (I am not sure if they released a new update to allow the latter to run on 2.2 Froyo).
Email:
-Exchange ActiveSync Support.
Alarm:
-Slide the stop/snooze vs pressing the onscreen button - Credit: aangita!
GALLERY:
-now displays from oldest -> newest - Credit: aangita!
Other:
-Bug Fix and Security patches to 2.2
-DriveSmart [Only in certain I9000 based ROM] - Thanks Rakeshchn!
-Enhanced RFS performance - Thanks Rakehschn!
-Google Backup Support will now reinstall previously installed application after prompting for password (in JSJ/JSG) - explodingboy70! (personally unconfirmed at the moment).
Let me know if I missed something, I will add it to the list and credit you for it.
New .1 designation for 2.2.1.
Lol jk don't add that to your list
Drive smart? Also did Samsung enhance RFS in 2.2.1?
these are not major, but they are changes! :/
ALARM : you have to slide the stop/snooze option vs pressing the onscreen button.
GALLERY: displays from oldest -> newest
Some apps are not present in the app drawer but are still installed.. (I dont know if that is for everyone, but I noticed it on my phone after the update!)

The option has always been there and I've never unchecked it when setting up a new rom. This is the first time that I've had 39 apps download all by themselves and not had to use titanium backup to restore for me. Mind you I had to re-enter passwords but didn't have to do anything this time. If I'm wrong and your apps have re-installed without you doing anything the I will gladly edit my prior post. Oh and on Vibrant also.

Yes, the overall animation and transition between Apps are smoother. However, it really depends on the ROM you are using. Stock 2.2.1 is gonna be laggier than a 2.2.1 ROM that has been tweaked by developers like EDT.

This depends on what you do with your phone, the modem and the kernel you use. Generally, I didn't notice a battery drop moving from 2.2 to 2.2.1
But things that will decrease battery life that are usually present in 2.2.1
-OC kernels (Tiger Blood, Overstock). Of course if you decide to not enable the OC, battery life should be comparable to 2.2
-KB1 Modem, I heard that KA5 modem is more battery efficient but it has a higher latency and lower output.
Browser is not hardware accelerated because when I scroll CPU spikes to 100%.

Is 2.2.1 an official stock release? I'm on the stock KA6 right now, how can I get 2.2.1?
No it's not an official release. To get it you've to flash one of the custom 2.2.1 roms in the development forum.

which ROM are you using? Also, have you tried to scroll a webpage with flash content on 2.2 vs. 2.2.1? On 2.2, it is really choppy and laggy while on 2.2.1, it is silky smooth. (to the point it almost feels like how the browser scrolled like in 2.1).
Video calling through network data should be up and ready on 2.2.1 i havent tried it though.

Most rock stable combination?

After getting a Galaxy Note, I'm giving this phone to my dad and I want to have the most stable combination there is that is without any sort of lag. Can anyone provide any recommendations?
works for me

Correct, after many months of testing, the best most stable, no lags, no low memory even after open close apps and 3D games, no bugs, and with a fully working wifi, ad-hoc and call recording integrated...
Its Darky 9.5 extreme edition based on the froyo js8.
Combination i find perfect is darky 9.5 with speedmod k13e kernel with ext4 fastest enabled in kernel, with scripts enable in kernel, and with fugu tweaks 2.3.5.zip.
Modem i use is zsjpg but bujp5 is also very good.
As i said this combination is simply amazing.
Using any gingerbread rom i would start lagging, and had 50 mg of ram after a few games and apps opened...but with the combination above no need to kill apps, the phone just runs anything with no problems at all, no low memory...it just works.
Besides...latest GB roms gave me wifi disconects, dont have fully working ad-hoc..and there is no call recording among other bugs and lags, low memory etc.
oSerX jvt rom with semaphore kernel..Its the best custom rom ..Stable as stock with solid batterylife..Its fast, smooth n simple...
I'm on the other side of the fence as others here. I'd recommend to stay stock with either Froyo or if maybe GBs JVR version. Since that seems pretty zippy, especially with browsing IMO.
The other plus with stock is the battery life is usually better. Maybe your dad might not use the phone as much as you, but it's still nice to have especially if he doesn't charge his phone as much...

Battery life is a must, I'll give JS8 a shot and then try JVT if JS8 doesn't work out. What about GPS? Is there any decent fix out there for it?
Well GPS and battery life don't go together, GPS is a battery killer. If you have to use GPS then have a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
I use stock JVT + Semaphore kernel, and I'm very happy with it.

For you dad; I'd say go back to JS8 with speedmod. Or throw CM7 on there - I never have any stability problems with CM7.
JS8 or JSD (froyo roms).
In case he need gingerbread for some reason then I'd chose oSerX rom (odexed JVT rom).
most stable = latest froyo + no rooting + no custom kernels + no moding/theming and so on
Simplicity 1.5.1
The most stable gingerbread I've run.
No fc's and no noticeable lags. No reboots. I will not change till 4.0.
