Hi I recently got a S110 since using it (very basic usage) I have encountered some problems can anyone help?
1.When I plug the mains charger into the S110 and it begins to charge the backlight does not work when I try to turn it on it does turn on as I can see the today screen very dimmly I then have (struggle) to go to the settings/backlight and tick and untick the check boxes there to bring the backlight on. I have to do this every time the charger is plugged in and I want the backlight on.
2. My Phone does not switch off even when I hold in the power button for 2 seconds as the manual says.
3. I am unable to start a new message or create a new contact from the today screen it makes the noise but the application does not open
4. When somebody phones me they hear it ringing in their ear for 20 rings and it only rings so that I may hear it for 8 rings
5. I am unable to use transcriber when writing text messages I write on the screen it beeps as though it has been recognised but does not write the printed text to the screen.
Please can anyone help
Problems Q110
Just received mine this am, generally happy with it although I will look at the problems you listed. I have discovered that it can't be turned off as well as you!
Will post more when I have had a chance to experiment.

@Duncan.M
the 2 second power hold to turn off the phone is an error in the manual.
holding the power button actually switchs the backlight off/on. which could help with your backlight issue.
can you actually use contacts and messaging at all? can you use the HW buttons to open either function? from your problems it sounds abit like not all the default software was installed the first time you turned your pda on.. well except for the ringling issue, i havent heard of that problem before.

@SppedN
My first question would then be. If I want to how do I switch my phone off if it is not holding the top right hw button for two seconds?
In response to your questions after taking two minutes to rtfm a soft reset fixed my inability to create a new txt message or new contact from the today screen & the issue with the backlight not working whilst connected to mains power
HOWEVER THE SOFT RESET HAS NOT FIXED.....
Problem 4 & Problem 5. (please see original thread subject)
@HeronLen OR Anyone else who has the CD Ver.A 06.2005
I would like to try a hard reset to see if that fixes the problems that still exist with my S110 except MY CD player on my PC will not read the CD that came with the phone would you be able to make a copy of your CD and if you have broadband upload it to an FTP/WEB SITE for me or if not even post a copy to me.
Heelo Duncan! I don't understand problem 4.
Do you mean, that when you make a phone call, your device rings x times, but the person you call's device actually rings y times?
I'd try a Hard reset to fix problem 4... it could be telco related delay possibly i guess. you dont actually need to have your pda attached to your pc to perform a hard reset. all the default software for you pda is stored on your pda in the extended rom. so a hardreset wipes the memory and begins a clean install.
for problem 5 can draw in notes with the transcriber? eg even simple straight lines? if transciber doesnt recognise your handwriting it can take a long time or even not display your writing.
oh and to turn the phone off you tap the reception icon in the middle of the start bar and turn on flight mode.

@helterskelter
Hi no I mean the other way around. When somebody calls me the phone rings in their ear 20 times yet it is only audible to me for 8 rings, which means that a) I have to have voicemail turned off otherwise voicemail picks it up after I have heard it ring only twice or b) with voicemail turned off I have to hope that the person calling is persistent (wait for a lot of rings in their ear) for me to get to the phone and pick it up.
I think it is a telco problem as speedn suggests that combined with slow software of the phone function of the S110.
Any suggestions are still welcome - How does everybody elses phone react?
@speedn
Problem 4. I know that I do not need to have my pda connected to my pc to do a hard reset though I would like to make a backup of my appointments etc onto pc before I do the hard reset this I cannot do without having a sd card (which I do not) or connection to my pc
Problem 5. I can draw in notes using transcriber but as theyre supposed to they stay in my handwriting (I think thats supposed to happen) The problem is that transcriber does not convert my handwriting into typed text. I have configured transcriber start>settings>input and it still doesnt work. I have also gone into word with transcriber as my preffered input method clicked on the letter shapes button selected the way that i write my letters and numbers and it still doesnt work, I write on the screen example, A (UP STROKE, DOWN STROKE, ACROSS STROKE) S110 BEEPS but the letter A is not typed on the screen it is stiil displayed in my handwriting. I really need to try a hard reset.
you can set your divert no answer to 30 seconds via your telco or in the settings>phone call forwarding section. and you can download activesync 3.8 from microsoft website. you can also backup appointments and contacts etc using permanent save in settings>system or xbackup to storage..just the appointments and contacts, a whole backu wont fit.
SpeedN
@speedn
Thanks for the flight mode answer.
We must be insync ourselves I was just reading about permanent save in the user manual. Ill try that
I ve also decided Im gonna go over to my mums house and put the cd in her laptop/share her cd drive and usinq wifi copy the entire contents of the cd onto my hard drive and try the install from hdd.
Ill let you know the results
Thanks for your help

I am not sure how I can contribute further, it would be good to get a fix for the off thing. I am not sure if many airlines will be happy with 'its off but not really' argument! Having interesting problems configuring gprs, why do MS make it so hard!

actually funny you should mention that, i was flying interstate here the other day, and i noticed a new comment from the flight stewards. it was about devices that use flight mode...please make sure flight mode is on.
flight mode switchs off all the gsm radio its the same as switching off your mobile phone. mind you there was also a major Imate Jam advertising campaign throughout the whole airport, 2 metre tall Jams everywhere.

I decided to see if I had any of the problems you listed. It turns out I had #5. I opened a note, selected Transcriber and tried to write something. It beeped like it recognized it but no text showed up. I then did the following:
1) reselected Transcriber as my input method
2) Selected Letter Shape Selector (didn't change anything here)
3) tapped OK
4) Selected each of the menu options at the bottom (just to see what they were)
5) After opening and closing each one, it started working
It seems there may be a software bug in this version of transcriber that causes it to not work unless a certain variable is initialized (by going to each, or one specific menu item first). FWIW, it worked form me.
@roblyman
no that didnt work for me.
I need a little bit of help.
I've just started having a very annoying problem with my HD2. I does not shut down.
Each time I try to shut it down it just restarts.
If I have the battery taken out and I put it back in, the phone turns on automatically.
I tried various ROMs, reinstalled the HSPL, used Task29 various times and the problem it's still there.
And the most annoying is that when the battery reached the critical status (low %), the phones just enters a continuous loop of restarts until the battery is completely dry. Because I cannot turn it off the only solution is to take the battery out until I have the opportunity to charge the device
I don't know if it is a software or hardware problem. I think it should be software but still I do not have any clue on it.
Did anybody had this problem up to now? Any help would be more than welcome.
interesting problem. Most times if a problem persists across hard resets/ rom flashes with task 29, etc, then it is usually a hardware problem.
Have you tried calling your carrier or htc for tech support, maybe a new phone?
Solution?
Hi,
I also had this same problem. I solved it, strangely, by plugging the phone in to charge then unpugging and reseting. Hope this works for you too!
Scott
Unfortunately I cannot benefit from the warranty service or free replacement.
The repair costs would not be an issue. The only thing that bothers me is that I don't know if is a hardware or software related.
If I consider the symptoms it should be soft related. But if I consider the thing that nothing of the above mentioned worked, then I have to tag it as hardware issue.
The only thing that could trigger such a behaviour is the fact that this weekend I had it in some high temperature environment ... trying to hold the phone which was charging, in a car without AC, outside temperature 37 Celsius in the shadow, I almost burned my hand ... so maybe some strange protection was triggered.
Another strange behaviour it had, is that i could not charge it on various trials. With the charger connected, in car or at home, it would not charge and the signal led which on normal charge is amber, in these cases was blinking between amber and green.
if the phone gets too hot, it won't charge. That is a safety feature.
Make sure you check your battery contacts as well, where the battery sits in the phone. If the middle one is bent so it doesn't make contact with the phone, it can give you the flashing led.
I thought I read on here that the hd2's were warrantied by htc for 2 years, based off serial number. Wouldn't hurt to call and see.
But it sounds like something fried in the heat.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to see if I can have a service check on it.

This issue has been discussed many times. A lot of people (including myself) has this problem. Try to put it into standby mode and after half a second, the screen comes back again. I have searched the forum many times, seems that no one has come up with a complete solution. Looks like it is not a hardware issue as most people found that if you connect it with your PC in activesync mode, it will resume normal.
My experience :
1. The problem just come up all of a sudden. Haven't install any software or apply any tweaks a couple of days before it happened.
2. Try to look into the active service via memmaid, nothing special.
3. Restore from previous backups when the machine hasn't got any problem. Didn't help.
4. Soft reset a couple of times. No use.
5. Hard reset finally. Problem still there.
6. Start to doubt that it is a hardware problem.
7. Use the plugin method. Normally after activesync, it resumes normal.
8. Also try to plugin micro USB without real connection. It sometimes works.
(I started to think that it might not be a hardware problem. It is obvious that when plugging in, something "stops".)
9. However, either way, it will happen again all of a sudden.
10. Start to take a few irrational moves : install BSB tweaks (haven't install since it sometimes crashes with Cookie's home). Switch to power saving mode with BSB.
11. Stop windows live autosync.
12. Install XDA shutdown. Whenever connected to PC via activesync, will manually put HD2 to sleep mode using XDA shutdown. Then unplug.
It has been four days now, everything resumes normal. The problem just gone all of a sudden. I really don't know what is the reason behind and which steps being taken is a solution. Anyway, that's my experience. Will update again for any changes again.

but if the problem persists across several roms and radios, how can it be software related? The fact that plugging it into the computer or charger sometimes fixes it, leads me to believe that it is the female usb connector that is the problem.

You might be right. I really dun know if it is a hardware or software problem. But, it's kind of interesting that after u plugin it will work for quite some times. And, it will come back after the next soft reset.
OMG!! ... this means that I've just got the HD2 Ebola disease. )
Now being serious, after flashing 3 ROMs, hundred of soft resets, battery in out ... and one long night ...I just give up.
I will just try not to have the phone discharged. I hope there will be a solution sometimes soon.
Possible solution
I had the same problem.
I removed the cover, cleaned the two contacts on the back of the cover and for some unknown reason it returned to normal (although I was holding a pencil in a threatening manner to the red reset button).
What are these nodules for? I think more to do with reception, but it worked perfectly.
Samsung hard reset methods
It seems as if there are 3 diffrent methods to reset the focus some in paticular do something diffrent than the others. I almost returned my phone because I messed up the dianostic tool and could no longer get any singnal or 3g data. I hard reset the phone using method 2-3 but the only one that got my phone back was method 1. Use this and it will completely hard reset the phone.
Method 1: Dial ##634# from the phone pad press the call button when the diagnostic screen appears type *2767*3855# to preform a full restore.
Method 2: Hold down the Power button, volume down button, and camera button
Method 3: Go to the Start screen, select Settings. Select the About screen. Select 'reset your phone'
Hmmm, I exchanged my Focus yesterday for another one, cause after I entered the diagnosis app and tinkered it screwed up my accelerometer. My screen rotation was crapped out. I investigated every sub menu in the *#2580# screen looking for a possible firmware reset. Spent several hours before calling ATT and they said bring it in and gave me a new on.
I wonder if this 3rd hard reset option would have fixed it.
Edit: 1st option now
Oh man, I wish I saw this yesterday! I just exchanged my phone because I thought it was defective. Haha, guess that's what I get for messing in the diagnostic tool.
Good information to see. I haven't needed it due to a bad config on my part, but noticed the phone wouldn't completely go to factory defaults. This should take care of it next time.
Messed accelerometer
Does anyone know if this works with a messed accelerometer?
Yea i started messing around with the Diag tool on the phone and ended up messing up my software keyboard. To the point where it would have to think what the word i was trying to press was. I did a standard soft reset and it works like a charm now.
will this unlink the SD card to the phone??!

Not that anyone has reported. The only way to "unlink" a microSD card is to reformat it in a device that can see it. Some people say Macs can read them, but otherwise your only other hope are Nokia and Symbian phones.
Macs wont read them as far as I know, nor will ubuntu, nor will anything in a vmware fusion virtual machine, would be nice if i could unlock it as i dont really know anyone with a symbian phone
I got a demo mode focus a few days ago. I tried option 2&3 but they did not work.
The device go back to normal when I finish option 1, but I cant go in any app or setting, the phone returns to start interface after loading. Then it shuts down and turn to demo mode again.
It seems there is no way to stop demo mode... what would I do?

Demo mode is from a Demo firmware. No matter how you reset it, it will still be on Demo firmware. You have to load a non-demo firmware in order to stop it. Unfortunately, there is no known Focus firmware out there.
Besides, any demo mode focus is a stollen property. Good luck with that.

You got a stolen phone.
Those are AT&T display phones and they cannot be reset.
They need to be re-flashed and there is not ROM out right now for the Focus.
EDIT: Just noticed Foxbat121's response... doh!
Thanks for the good information....Option #1..
I have an HTC surround. I am having a problem sliding up the lock-screen. It takes number of attempts to slide up the screen. Sometimes it results in missing the incoming call. It appears to me there is a mechanism (an observer) which negates the touch event if the phone is in pocket while the phone is locked. In my case, even when I am sliding the lock-screen up with my finger, the observer is negating the action and the lock-screen comes back from 20% slide-up. Other than that, the touch-screen is working perfectly fine.
Q:
Is it a software or hardware issue?
Is there a workaround (something like hacking into the ROM and playing with the drag sensitivity)?
Should I dump it and consider myself "done with the WP7"?
P.S.
1. I got this unlocked ATT phone from US and now using it in middle-east.
2. (Not sure but) I have heard that ATT only return the phones with monthly contract.
3. The problem started after 12 days of first use.
4. I tried hard and soft reset, with/without nodo and latest updates. But it’s still the same.
It sounds most likely like it is just an inconsistent/bad touch panel on the hardware. You could attempt to replace it yourself by purchasing another one on eBay, but I doubt that any software fix would be able to fix this behaviour. I have a Samsung Focus WP7 and this never happens, the only time the lock screen comes back down is if you lift your finger before getting to the top. So my best guess is that the touch screen just cuts out before you can get the phone unlocked. Sorry....
I have the same issue. Does anyone have a solution, please!!. I'm in another country, so I can't return it. Have to fix it!
same issue here.
Do you have anyone in the US that you could send it back through? You might also try contacting HTC directly. I believe the phone has a 1 yr warranty on it. At least that's what Asurion told me when they sent me one as a replacement for my old Tilt 2.
My Phone have same problem, i install NO-DO next install PreMango but not helped.
I have no such issue with my sourrond, with mango 7720 and speech for phone accessibility turn on you only have to slide less than a inch to unlock screen...
A possible answer
After some researching i found this in one of the forums of HTC
Display Not Working on the HTC Surround
Black/Blank Screen
Verify that the battery is properly installed in the device.
Attempt to power the device on by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds.
If the device won’t power on (also indicated by no LED’s) attempt to charge the device. If there is no response from the device when attached to a charger and power source, treat the issue as a Power/charging issue.
If the device will or is powered on:
Verify that the device is not in hibernate mode by pressing the Power Button once.
Once you have verified that the device is not in hibernate mode, attempt to navigate the device by using the Hardware buttons.
If the display is still black/blank, Soft Reset the device by powering it off and removing the battery for 10 seconds and then reinsert and Power the device back on.
If the screen is still black/blank after the Soft Reset, you will need to perform a Hard Reset.
The hard reset will remove all of the customers’ data and settings and restore the device back to the state that it was in out of the box. Once the Hard Reset is done, the customers’ settings and data CANNOT be recovered. If possible, have the customer back up their data before proceeding with the Hard Reset.
Once the Hard Reset is complete, retest the device.
If the screen is still black/blank, the device will need to be replaced/repaired.
Screen has lines
Is the customer using a custom picture or image as their wallpaper?
Return the Wallpaper settings to one of the defaults on the device by going to Start>All Applications Arrow>Settings>Lock & Wallpaper>Change wallpaper
Is the issue seen when using the default wallpaper on the device?
If so, Soft Reset the device.
If not, advise the customer that the issue is with their custom wallpaper selection and recommend that they discontinue use of it.
Does the issue remain after completing the Soft Reset?
If so, rule out recent 3rd party applications that might have affected it, by removing them
Start>All Applications Arrow>Touch and Hold on an application to be removed and select Uninstall from the Pop-up menu.
Note: Not all applications can be uninstalled from the device.
Once all recent applications have been removed, power cycle the device and retest.
Is the issue seen after removing recent 3rd party applications and performing the Soft Reset?
If so, perform a Hard Reset.
The hard reset will remove all of the customers’ data and settings and restore the device back to the state that it was in out of the box. Once the Hard Reset is done, the customers’ settings and data CANNOT be recovered. If possible, have the customer back up their data before proceeding with the Hard Reset.
Once the Hard Reset and retest the device.
If the issue remains, the device will need to be replaced/repaired.
Unresponsive Touch Screen
Note: The device comes with a Capacitive Touch screen which will not respond to light touches from anything other than the flesh of the finger. Users trying to use their fingernails or any other object should be advised that they need to use the flesh of their fingers (firmly) to navigate the Touch Screen.
Verify that the issue is with the Touch Screen and not the device freezing by attempting to navigate the device using the hardware keys.
If you can navigate the device using the Hardware buttons, continue.
If you cannot navigate the device using the Hardware buttons, this issue needs to be worked using the troubleshooting flow for Device Freeze.
Check the device for a static cling screen protector, if present, remove and retest.
If the issue remains, Soft Reset the device.
Check the device for a carrying case with a magnetic closure; some magnets can interfere with the Touch Screen responsiveness.
If using one of these cases, have the user remove the device from the case and retest.
Ensure that the Charger/Data Cable is the one intended for the device by HTC.
Use of non OEM chargers/data cables can cause your screen to become unresponsive (due to the power being allocated to charging the task, and not the screen).
HTC can only guarantee items such as chargers that have been made, made for and certified by HTC. Our chargers have been tested and passed strenuous quality and safety regulations, and it is recommended you only use HTC chargers with your phone. You must be very careful when using electrical appliances; using products that have not been tested properly or that have not been tested at all could cause your phone to malfunction, or even in extreme cases, could injure you.
If the issue is not resolved by the previous steps, move forward with the Hard Reset.
The hard reset will remove all of the customers’ data and settings and restore the device back to the state that it was in out of the box. Once the Hard Reset is done, the customers’ settings and data CANNOT be recovered. If possible, have the customer back up their data before proceeding with the Hard Reset.
Once the Hard Reset and Customization process have completed, retest the device.
If the issue remains, the device will need to be replaced/repaired.
Hope someone can give us a better answer, but this is the best at the moment
UPDATE:
People if you want to fix your Phone just put this on the serch engine of XDA Developers "To solve the problem "Screen unresponsive" or "Frozen screen" by yourself", without the brackets.

Hi JesusOdin
I have the same issue but my question is
And all is right now?
I you have luck please tell me
Thank You
I've had similar issue with the lock screen at times. The problem is more persistant when the phone is in the pants pocket during hot weather or I am under heavy exersion. I think it may be related to the humidity. I have refrained from storing the phone in this pocket and rarely have any issue.
The phone is not weather resistant, an Otterbox might help but would be rather bulky.
was there ever a solution to this lock screen problem?
i heard it was something to do with the drivers...changing from v69 (at&t) to v63(t-mobile)
anyone know how to do this?
Well...
Tried to replace the digitizer and ended up cuting the ribbon cable of the display. I bought the screen and digitizer. Replacing the parts on this cel is not for the weak of heart.
The cel did work without problems afterwards.
I have a surround and lately its misbehaving.
The screen goes off within a second or two if I do not continue touching it. Sometimes it doesn't even stay for a second and goes off immediately. When the screen goes off, I notice the red battery light blinking. Sometimes its just in a reboot boot loop. If i am successful and able to reach videos and start a video, then the video plays fine.
Until the video is playing, the screen doesn't go off. I have tried a hard reset but it didn't help. I am on mango.
What might be the problem?
Hello, suddenly my softkeys stopped working, I already tried doing a factory reset, reflash a different rom, but still no go.
What's strange is that even on landscape mode the keys dont work.
It doesn't seem to be a problem with the touch screen since the touch screen works fine as long as the soft keys aren't present.
Any help? Thnx!

Hi Salvy,
Did you flash a mod or another kernel?
It's a very common problem with the Nexus 4. I've been using paranoid android pie for 6 months to work around the issue. I can confirm that it is a hardware issue and not a software problem. A quick Google search can tell you that.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Got the same damn problem. I would normally use a smart phone for at least 18 months but the Nexus 4 only lasted 14 months. I was hoping to use it till the Nexus 6 came out but after sending it off to be fixed, using a dumb phone for 10 days and the phone came back with the same problem, I had to go buy a Nexus 5
My soft keys work in portrait but not in landscape. I enabled the 'show touches' option in developer mode and I can see the lower 4mm of the screen isn't registering any touch. Do a quick search on Google and you'll find there are loads of people out there with the same problem. The only solution is to change the screen and I haven't seen anyone manage to get it changed under warranty . I have sent it back and expect them to fleece me off £100 for a new screen.
Disappointed with the quality of the N4 but I had no choice but to get the N5 even though it is also by LG cause once you go Vanilla, you cant go back

Ok. so I have been told by the LG service centre in Mumbai that this happens when an android update doesnt get installed properly, it definately is an android update problem according to the service centre. But since i am out of warranty by @ DAYS I have to pay Rs. 5300 for no fault of mine... ****ed up!!!
I found a solution somehwere on the internet!!
I had this problem for the last day this is the solution.
Download the application: GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys ★ root
Use it, toy with it and restart your phone. And it just works.
This worked with unrooted phones aswell, as the solution said. I don't know.
Your welcome!

I paid Rs 4700 which includes service charge, taxes etc in addition to the cost of the screen+ digitiser. The guys at service center dont have separate screen and digitiser but just both of them as single replacement. I just hoped that they could have better service centers and support, but you cant help.
Using `wm` command on phone via ADB shell to add an blank border on screen

Hello, suddenly my softkeys stopped working, I already tried doing a factory reset, reflash a different rom, but still no go.
What's strange is that even on landscape mode the keys dont work.
It doesn't seem to be a problem with the touch screen since the touch screen works fine as long as the soft keys aren't present.
Any help? Thnx!

I used virtual buttons for awhile, but in the end, discovered a way to do it without rooting, so long as you have the `adb` command line tool installed for development, and don't restart your phone that often:
From a command-line termal:
```
# Log into a device connected via USB.
# (Look for a tutorial on using adb, as it need some config on the phone)
adb shell
# Change the screen "overscan" using the window manager tool on the phone:
wm overscan 0,0,0,80
```
The trick is that, overscan essentially adds a buffer (black bar) on any side of the screen for positive numbers. (the screen extends "offscreen" for negative ones.) `wm --help` will show you that the accepted format of overscan is:
```
wm overscan [reset | LEFT,TOP,RIGHT,BOTTOM]
```
ie. you can either reset it to default, or set any border. In my case, I set the bottom border to 80 pixels, and that was enough to avoid the non-responsive section of the touch screen.
Of course, I assume this reset on reboot, but haven't tried yet. If it does, I'm sure someone can figure out a clever way to make it persist
Anyhow, hopefully this helps!
Found the issue and got it fixed
It worked for me. I had the same Problem and it occur when i bought new power cable. The i plugged the original blackberry micro usb cable for power up and it started working for me. Its weird but the cause of the problem is when i plugged the cheap micro USB.
Note:- this is my first update to any forum just to help people if someone has the same problem as mine.

Yes,it could be a microusb,i was in a hurry two day's ago and took one problematic microusb cable,when i put it to charge touchscreen has gone mad,it was ghost touches,slow respond,all until i turned it off,then after reboot my softkeys stopped to work,it was such for a whole day,i tried to remove batt and discharge pressing power button for 1 minute but nothing,cleared cache,uninstall app,but nothing...so i discharged it completely,took hairdryer and heated it for 45sec,and then charged overnight. In the morning soft keys worked....

Issue:
-Softkeys not working when located on the side of the screen closest to the charging port. Softkeys would work when the screen was rotated such that the softkeys were located on the side of the screen closest to the headphone jack.
Device:
-Nexus 4 running 5.1.1
Conditions:
-Battery was 85%-90% charged
What fixed the issue:
-Plugged the phone into a USB charger. I did not use a Nexus charger; I used a random LG charger I had laying around.
-Pressed and held the power button for 30 seconds. The phone powered off after ~10 seconds. Shortly after the phone powered off, the notification light flashed red for the remainder of the 30 seconds.
-Powered the phone back on. When the phone was finished booting up, the softkeys worked again.
What didn't work:
-Restarting the phone multiple times
-Restarting into Safe Mode
-Disabling Chrome (Settings >> Apps >> Chrome >> Disable)
