Google Sky Map Issues - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone having issues where google sky map is all shaky when trying to use it. On my MyTouch3G it was very smooth.

Anyone having this issue?

No issues here, have you tried messing with the settings at all?

Yeah I have... still very shaky.

I have the same issue. It told me the sun and mars were in clearly incorrect spots and is very shaky.

I believe there are issues with the MT4G GPS... I had a problem using Google Nav... it was telling me the closest Best Buy was in Tennessee (I live in the Los Angeles area) and then when it did pull one up close to me, when I "arrived at the destination", I was in the middle of the road next to a park and apartments. No Best Buy anywhere in sight for miles.
Then I closed it out, rebooted my phone, tried again, and it led me to a real location.
Weird.

Lol. That is crazy. Good thing you had enough sense to not drive to Tennessee. But more than likely you would have driven out there into the middle of the sticks with no civilization for miles.lol.

Are you using a Samsung device
Sky map was terrible on both my Vibrant and Nexus S. Went to the MT4G and this was the first app I tested. Buttery smooth.
Hopefully you get the issue sorted. Have you tried calibrating the accelerometer by moving the phone in a figure 8 pattern? I think there are some youtube videos that explain how to do this.

Why do people need gps on their phones? this is a serious question
I have never needed or used gps in my life

My biggest uses:
Find restaurants/activities near me to try new things (or in a new location)
Geo-caching - fun way to hike
Navigation - maps are dangerous and slow to use in a car, annoying to carry, and out of date depending on your source. Phones aren't the best for this but Android's Navigation is basically the cream of the crop.
Um if you dont know what good a gps is you really need to get into the tech. age.
I use it for EVERYTHING.
The real key is that I use google maps to look up anyone or anything around me. My friends all use latitude on weekend nights so we can find each other. If my gps doesn't show where I am how are friends supposed to find me?
I use it for pizza on a random night... or out on the boat when I'm going to a restaurant on the water.....or on a Friday afternoon when traffic is horrible and I want an alternate route.
There's plenty of reasons why the GPS NEEDS TO ACTUALLY WORK on this phone.
Well I'm not making an excuse for the gps problems I just have never needed gps is all
barely any of my friends have an android phone
Still stuck on blackberry and feature phones

I use GPS to navigate around unfamiliar locations. I cannot memorize the entirety of the planet's geography so I must rely on tools to bridge this particular shortcoming and I cannot safely read a map while driving.
What the hell did you expect?

Gosh. Where to start: Geocaching; geotagging photos ("the accident|family snapshot|scenery is right here"); tracking athletic runs (Cardio Trainer, etc); self-geocoding of addresses to avoid intellectual property issues with online geocoding sources; geocoding any physical object surveyed for a multitude of GIS applications and databases; "I am here" apps for emergency use; wardriving; geo-based social networking; geo-based shopping (Barcoder, Shop Savvy, etc.); calibrating speedometer and odometer; orienteering; mapping trails; tracking hikes and bike rides; of course, real-time vehicular navigation; recording and analyzing delivery routes ...
The list is really open-ended, and is expanding as democratized GIS, mapping, and GPS functionalities expand.
The integration of GPS with other technologies on the "phone" -- really a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls and is enhanced by cell-based GPS hybrid location and thus orders of magnitude more useful than a dedicated GPS receiver-- is what provides the power. I can be driving down the highway at lunch, speak "Taco Bell" into my phone, and it will find the closest choices with directions on a dynamic map.
This is why an accurate and functioning GPS is integral to Android smartphones. It enables things you didn't even conceive of, and services still being invented.
Geographically-based "to do" items, so the phone alerts you when you're getting off the freeway and reminds you to stop at the grocery store to buy toilet paper and cat food on the way home from work.
Location-aware ringer preferences. At the office, it turns down the ringer volume so half the floor doesn't hear the theme from The Great Giana Sisters (starting at 2:18) performed by Machinae Supremacy whenever somebody calls

Well then you need to expand your horizions Sometimes it's fun to go get lost and then of course have a nice gps to bring you home.
I use sprint nav when me and my friends get lost on a random night in the car or when we're driving with no where to go, I'll use sprint nav to get us to some random restaurant in another state or something.
I also use google maps to find trainstations nearby when I'm in some random part of the city. And when I went to my friends college 7 hours away, thebus had to make a random stop and I used it to figure out where I was.
Its also entertaining to ride a train and see a little blue arrow scrolling across the screen following your path with a Speedometer.
If you have intimateknowledge ofplaces bfore hand, then you have no reason for a gps considering you clearly don't care about the tecnology. This gps bug effects quite a few people adversely. I for one didn't realize how much I used gps until I upgraded from my hero

[Q] Last time I checked..I lived in Nebraska

So, I was curious about my wifi tethering speeds..I hit up speedtest.net..
Why does my phone think that it is in Europe?
Pic related.
its not always where you live, my guess is the speedtest.net picks servers based on your isp, ping times, distance, loads, things like that
I don't put much faith in that app. One absolutely GLARING problem with it is how the final speeds are calculated...well, that's just it...they aren't. If you hover between 500-600, but then at the last second jump to 30 (or 1200), then that'll be the final result displayed. Without an average, the final numbers on the speed tests are totally useless. Very misleading and frustrating.

I too am from nebraska! I noticed that it picks a strange server when I switch to wifi. If I turn my gps on it then finds the correct server. When I speed test on 3g it find the correct ones. I dunno.
That happened to me yesterday, had me in Cork ireland. I updated profile in settings, and that seemed to fix it.

Some more info: this issue is present for both google maps and the modded maps by brut.all
I did a search for you, because the oddity of this problem is interesting, there seems to be a consensus that you need to run GPS only, no "cell network" assistance.
I was also interested if you were suffering the possible side effects of allowing Lightsquared to transmit so close to the GPS frequencies.
Hope this helps.
What is Lightsquared? I have not heard of that before
Lightsquared is trying to bring Internet to portable devices, not over cell freqs. They petitioned the FCC for new freqs and got approval earlier this year.
The problem is that their freqs are very close to GPS freqs...It's got a lot of people worried that the very low power GPS will no longer work correctly against the background of the much more powerful signals from Lightsquared.
http://www.gpsworld.com/gnss-system...us-gps-jamming-fcc-approved-broadcaster-11029
I'm curious to see if everyone's GPS will have issues, especially when they are near large cities that Lightsquared has deployed to.

Google Maps is obsolete! Waze 3.0 released 1/31/2012!

Waze is great for driving, but Google Maps does a lot more than just driving - Favorites, 3D maps, places nearby, find and rate places, Lattitude for friends, etc.

Did you try adding any groups? How does it just "not work" in Hawaii? WTF?
Unfortunately waze won't be replacing google maps for me anytime soon.
For one thing, the routing is horrible. I tested it by driving from home to work, and it's telling me to go on the side streets and through residential areas that probably added 5 miles and 10 min to my commute
I know it's suppose to reroute you to the least traffic route, but the way I take normally to work (major road) barely have any cars in the morning and I am usually at work in 15 min.
Another thing is that it seems to use up more memory than google maps. When I have music playing and waze running, the music would skip once every 30 sec or so. I think it's because waze is updating too often with all the messages people are leaving around the area etc.

Yeah just join as many groups as possible I would say.
You can thank Silicon Valley for this app. I heard about this at my old job from my old boss. It's super mega popular here (like most tech things) and I'm sure the rest of the country will catch on. I'm surprised no one's heard of it yet. Then again I didn't hear of it until a few months ago.
I have used this for a while. Its nice except it drains the battery. Its really useful for the commute from los angeles to vegas. The cop warnings are right on.

Sounds like a problem with your GPS not the APP. What does the GPS status APP tell you?
Also you can actually get lots points by creating maps for Hawaii. I saw these threads:

GPS Locking Issue

Does anyone have problems locking to the GPS? GPS Test tells me I have 25 satellites in view but only 3 to 5 are in use. I can never get a good lock in Google Maps. Navigation is pretty much useless. I am testing with a clear view of the sky.

I had the same problem, but mine was caused by a custom ROM and some xposed mods that didn't play well together. I had to do a factory reset and walk around for a couple minutes for the first lock. Then after that it got a fixed locked every time, really fast.
I do. You're the only person I've seen comment on it other than myself. I was getting pretty convinced that it was just my phone that was weak on GPS. I have to be outside to get a lock most of the time. If it's cloudy I'll only get 8 or 9 out of 17 or so.
I rarely get a lock while in my house, it's hit or miss while in a car, and not at all when in my office. I tried faster fix but that didn't help any. The on'y other phone I've owned that was this weak on GPS was my Galaxy Nexus.
I have also been having this issue. The only thing that seems to help is by enabling the Google location services, for some reason that helps the gps . However it has a negative impact on the battery. At first I though it was the custom rom but I did a full unroot and reset, and the problem persists.

I'm having the same issue on my d803 at the begging I thought it was a faulty device the one I got because I tried a factory reset and it didn't help. I tested with a Nexus 7 and a Galaxy s4 next to it and they got a lock immediately. After exchanging the phone I still have the same issue. I don't know if it is just software or also hardware related. Hopefully LG will release an update for the issue.

Had the same issue on the Verizon variant. No matter what I tried to do while on a custom rom I couldn't get a lock in Maps or GPS Test. So I had to restore back to stock. Deleting all my internal storage in the process. Finally was able to get GPS working on this thing. I was about to exchange the device before I did this.
There have been other threads about this in the Q&A section. It seems limited to the Verizon version, but I pretty much experience the same issues as everyone here. Compass is sometimes off by 30 degrees and GPS lock takes a while. I do occasionally get placed on neighboring streets when in a downtown city area as well due to the lock accuracy.

Ya I'm having big issues too, my phone will say it has my location but have like no satellites, and gps info doesn't say it until i have lik 8+ sattellites and even then sometimes google maps doesn't show a complete lock, though I have gotton that a few times. Half the time though it just takes foerever , and i'm on verizon
Im having problems here as well. I will eventually get a lock, but will get a notification saying GPS signal lost in the middle of navigating with Google Maps. Was trying to figure out if its a Verizon phone issue or I just have a bad GPS antenna...
Same issue here. GPS checker app doesn't help much. Running Malladus. Might factory reset later on. Everytime I check GPS at work I'm several blocks in another direction from my location.
I have also noticed that it has trouble figuring out which way I am heading. Lets say my google maps has me going north, my arrow might be going north but it pointed West. Seems all screwed up.
I had the same issue. Downloaded GPS status from the play store, ran it, and now I get lock in seconds.

For me, it's not necessarily a lock issue, it's that I will have a lock and then it will tell me gps signal lost.

Since this seems mostly to be on the Verizon model has anyone compared the GPS.conf file with another to see the differences? Maybe this can be an easy fix.

I've experienced the same issue with my T-mobile G2. Only way to get a solid GPS lock is to turn on google location services. Even then the lock is "fuzzy" and accuracy is 30-80 feet.
