Google Maps is obsolete! Waze 3.0 released 1/31/2012! - EVO Shift 4G General

Has anyone tried Waze yet??
It has police traps, road hazards, groups, traffic reports, turn by turn navigation and everything! It's like Facebook for driving! Check it out!
https://market.android.com/details?...rch_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS53YXplIl0.

I tried that and always got an error saying i didn't have enough memory, but i do like that its more of users submitting data to help everyone out with the speed traps and traffic jams

Yeah mooey blows. It's worked on Sense and AOSP just fine for me.

Hellua like my Google Maps. But this looks interresting, going to check it out.

Waze is great for driving, but Google Maps does a lot more than just driving - Favorites, 3D maps, places nearby, find and rate places, Lattitude for friends, etc.

Waze can do all of that minus 3d maps (big woop). I use Waze mainly for the police traps and traffic hazards and reports.

I'll give this a try but I'll still google maps too

Once you get the hang of Waze the first thing you will do is put it in the same place google maps is on your home screen.

Damn, tried the app but it does not work in Honolulu, HI. I guess ill have to stick with MAPS, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Did you try adding any groups? How does it just "not work" in Hawaii? WTF?

Unfortunately waze won't be replacing google maps for me anytime soon.
For one thing, the routing is horrible. I tested it by driving from home to work, and it's telling me to go on the side streets and through residential areas that probably added 5 miles and 10 min to my commute
I know it's suppose to reroute you to the least traffic route, but the way I take normally to work (major road) barely have any cars in the morning and I am usually at work in 15 min.
Another thing is that it seems to use up more memory than google maps. When I have music playing and waze running, the music would skip once every 30 sec or so. I think it's because waze is updating too often with all the messages people are leaving around the area etc.

That's strange because I have the exact OPPOSITE problem. It'll put me on the highway instead of taking the sidestreets. Have you checked your navigation settings?
Again the main thing I love about waze is the user reports like police traps and road hazards.

I like this app a lot and will be using it mainly for navigation. The main thing is as long as everyone reports new police traps, traffic ect everything will stay updated There isn't really much close by to me since I don't live in a major city but I'll see how it turns out.

Yeah just join as many groups as possible I would say.
You can thank Silicon Valley for this app. I heard about this at my old job from my old boss. It's super mega popular here (like most tech things) and I'm sure the rest of the country will catch on. I'm surprised no one's heard of it yet. Then again I didn't hear of it until a few months ago.

I have used this for a while. Its nice except it drains the battery. Its really useful for the commute from los angeles to vegas. The cop warnings are right on.

Sounds like a problem with your GPS not the APP. What does the GPS status APP tell you?
Also you can actually get lots points by creating maps for Hawaii. I saw these threads:

Cop Radar/Detector

Is there a cop radar/detector app for PPC? To slow down when a cop is around, this would be a very useful app if anyone can come up with one.
i'm sure you can make one, but your device doesn't have a radar detector, does it. If they sell bluetooth radars, by all means, try it.
How would your PPC detect a cop? A PPC does not have any type of radar detecting hardware, thus there would be no way to build software for it.
Radar Detector!?!?!?! LMAO!
Well, that any radar detectors are almost useless. By the time it goes off most of the time are already busted.
However...I believe there is an add-on for TomTom Navigator that people report where speed traps are and were, so they are marked on your map as you drive. There are examples of it on Youtube somewhere.
I think it would be sweeter if they incorporated a swiss army toolkit in a PPC.
Come on guys ,

Heres an idea...Don't Speed!
I think it's hilarious when I pull someone over for speeding and they have a radar unit on their dash.....
Sounds like someone had to go back to driving school once or twice
Ummm being a Police Officer I will have to tell you...there is no good radar detectors out there. As earlier stated...by the time your radar detector goes off we already have you. The only time it would be benificial would be when the police officer is running a stationary radar on a main road and has it turned on, just pointing in one direction!
I can see it now...using your Tilt as a radar detector, trying to text message someone while you have a mp3 playing...BAM you smack into a tree!!!

I was thinking something along this line, there is a program like this on Modaco. It's not that great though, looking for something way better than this.
There are many good radar detectors like Escort and many Laser jammer for Cop radars
Only that price is a little high.
Starting from 500 euro

Well i have a TomTom One. and it doesn`t have a radar detector. The only way it anounces radars is if they are posted in the TomTom like POI points of interest like a restaurant a store... but mobile radars sometimes change place. Only fixed ones are more reliable.

something is moving in Froyo development

Hope this will be of interest for someone.
I'm Italian, and as other italian owners of nexus one with the beta of Froyo, today we found some news
First, no we can just speak for writing sms and email, when keeping pressed the search button still italian speech recognition desn't work, same when searching the web.
Second, finally now we have the google navigator, we can input the destination just speaking and works fine, we can also search the web for something and launch the navigator.
This is of course a great signal, because in my opinion if Google will be able to offer all the services that are already available for the USA customers in the others countries, then Apple will have some problem selling his next product.
Why spent 600 and more euros for a phone, that is of course well assembled and with good materials, while with 499€ you can get a phone that has much more features? The free navigator is a real killer features that we really missed.
Ciao!
Same for Germany
That isn't FroYo development. It is just the latest update to Google Maps. Added 11 more countries for navigation and more languages for voice.
Yup.
Canadians now have access to the full set of map features. Took long enough, but I am certainly grateful!
I'm actually surprised we (UK) got it before Canada.
Enjoy it though, it's great!
Now more countries can follow asinine directions from Google Nav. Enjoy!
Last weekend I gave Google Nav a try... It wanted me to drive 5 miles down a country road and drive through a gated community rather than go down the main road 50 feet away and drive half a mile to my destination. Also one time instructed me to go down a 1 way the wrong way even though Google Maps shows it clearly as 1 way (ie: it knew!)
It's a nice program, and can't beat the price, but it comes with a large grain of salt.

Ahh google maps has *some* issues but I think you either have an old version, didn't look at the alternative routes, or marked something like no tolls. Google navigation has been awesome for me, the only thing its been wrong on is the location of a couple of stores... one was on the wrong side of the street, the other was in the next shopping center. It'll get better as you can report stuff like that, which I did, and the more that use it the smaller those problems will happen. I've used it for a lot of stores though so I think you might want to give it another try with different locations and check your settings. Also make sure you updated it from the marketplace and aren't using the stock maps.

Incorrect as well.
Your phone running android 1.6 did not get the updates. Google simply modified their servers to allow Navigation in your region/country.
It has nothing to with updating the Maps version on your phone. If you are in a non nav region, you can see this simply by loading a map with directions in the USA and NAV will be available.
But you are right about is not being Froyo specific.

Yes, Google Maps is the latest, 4.2.0.. And I haven't checked any options at all in the options, I actually didn't see any when I quickly looked. Only reason I used it actually was I was using a geocaching program which popped it up for navigating to a geocache so I let it do its thing.
FYI, this isn't a case of "geocache in the middle of nowhere" in case you're familiar with it, navigation to them can be tricky or wind up in the wrong spot. Nothing like that, I was actually leaving one place and driving to another one a few miles away and it was telling me to drive way out of the way down a narrow road then left into a closed gated community.
Later I was driving downtown and it suggested I turn into a 1 way street...

I would say use it, with common sense. Just like any navigational software.
How's the navigation compared to other competitions such as Nokia's Ovi Maps and Bing Maps?
perhaps I have not expressed my idea very well. I thought that before releasing Froyo, Google wanted to make all services already available in USA, also in other countries. This make sense, because in Europe we missed this features, voice search, navigation, etcetera...
So why release Froyo without offering all the goodies also in other countries?
If Froyo will be released tomorrow I'll be very happy to enjoy the new software, but honestly I'm happy for the navigator totally integrated with the phone.
Guys, please post in appropriate threads instead of starting a new one.

Google maps has all the NYC subways available, you just have to turn it on in the "layers" section in the gmaps settings. It will even give you travel directions using the trains/buses.

I'll point out too that gmaps has mass transit info like that in most major metro areas. We don't have subways here, but I use the city busses all the time, and every single stop and schedule is available to me in real-time with just a few clicks...it's probably been the #1 most useful app out of all of them on my HD2!
I love it when someone at the bus stop asks me "do you know when the XXX bus comes?" or "do you know which bus I need to take to get to _____?"...just so I can say "no, but I can look it up for you!" as I whip out my magicbox with the 4.3" viewport...it always wows them
yeah , just the same i'd liek to see a subway map app which shows nyc. it is one of the largest, most impressive as wellas misunderstood subway systems in the world yet there is no map app of any sort for it; at least that i can find.
i'd love to hear if anyone knows anything regarding this...

The google maps app on your phone has a transit option that does exactly that. I've used it many times and it has all of the NY Subway info. It's never failed me. Check it out. Gives you very detailed directions to the subway from where you are on foot, then which trains to take, the foot directions to get to your final destination once you get off the train.

You download the info before you leave or get into the subway. The program will stay running and you can look at your phone even if you don't have a signal...
It's not a step by step GPS function. It's just directions. Or just download the info, email it to yourself and look at the directions via email...
Get Directions-->Transit tab--> Type in your start and end points and you get the info...

Thats what I do, but the Subway maps have just been updated (Effective June 27), so get the latest maps at MTA.Info With all the budget cuts with the MTA, the new maps are a must have (bus maps also).
Also, before Googlemaps had transit info, I would use HopStop.com
thanks guys. these are all fine work-arounds and i use them already however, this does not really address my question.
i am looking for, or would like an actual nyc subway map application.
does anyone know if any?

Gps

Why do people need gps on their phones? this is a serious question
I have never needed or used gps in my life
I like using maps better I guess
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
My biggest uses:
Find restaurants/activities near me to try new things (or in a new location)
Geo-caching - fun way to hike
Navigation - maps are dangerous and slow to use in a car, annoying to carry, and out of date depending on your source. Phones aren't the best for this but Android's Navigation is basically the cream of the crop.
Um if you dont know what good a gps is you really need to get into the tech. age.
I use it for EVERYTHING.
The real key is that I use google maps to look up anyone or anything around me. My friends all use latitude on weekend nights so we can find each other. If my gps doesn't show where I am how are friends supposed to find me?
I use it for pizza on a random night... or out on the boat when I'm going to a restaurant on the water.....or on a Friday afternoon when traffic is horrible and I want an alternate route.
There's plenty of reasons why the GPS NEEDS TO ACTUALLY WORK on this phone.
Well I'm not making an excuse for the gps problems I just have never needed gps is all
barely any of my friends have an android phone
Still stuck on blackberry and feature phones

Gosh. Where to start: Geocaching; geotagging photos ("the accident|family snapshot|scenery is right here"); tracking athletic runs (Cardio Trainer, etc); self-geocoding of addresses to avoid intellectual property issues with online geocoding sources; geocoding any physical object surveyed for a multitude of GIS applications and databases; "I am here" apps for emergency use; wardriving; geo-based social networking; geo-based shopping (Barcoder, Shop Savvy, etc.); calibrating speedometer and odometer; orienteering; mapping trails; tracking hikes and bike rides; of course, real-time vehicular navigation; recording and analyzing delivery routes ...
The list is really open-ended, and is expanding as democratized GIS, mapping, and GPS functionalities expand.
The integration of GPS with other technologies on the "phone" -- really a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls and is enhanced by cell-based GPS hybrid location and thus orders of magnitude more useful than a dedicated GPS receiver-- is what provides the power. I can be driving down the highway at lunch, speak "Taco Bell" into my phone, and it will find the closest choices with directions on a dynamic map.
This is why an accurate and functioning GPS is integral to Android smartphones. It enables things you didn't even conceive of, and services still being invented.
Geographically-based "to do" items, so the phone alerts you when you're getting off the freeway and reminds you to stop at the grocery store to buy toilet paper and cat food on the way home from work.
Location-aware ringer preferences. At the office, it turns down the ringer volume so half the floor doesn't hear the theme from The Great Giana Sisters (starting at 2:18) performed by Machinae Supremacy whenever somebody calls

Well then you need to expand your horizions Sometimes it's fun to go get lost and then of course have a nice gps to bring you home.
I use sprint nav when me and my friends get lost on a random night in the car or when we're driving with no where to go, I'll use sprint nav to get us to some random restaurant in another state or something.
I also use google maps to find trainstations nearby when I'm in some random part of the city. And when I went to my friends college 7 hours away, thebus had to make a random stop and I used it to figure out where I was.
Its also entertaining to ride a train and see a little blue arrow scrolling across the screen following your path with a Speedometer.
If you have intimateknowledge ofplaces bfore hand, then you have no reason for a gps considering you clearly don't care about the tecnology. This gps bug effects quite a few people adversely. I for one didn't realize how much I used gps until I upgraded from my hero

Is definitely GPS and not data lost?
Maybe try navfree, only uses GPS after it downloads required maps?

It's not a data issue, I can surf and check email just fine. Speedtest.net results are fast.
This happened again when I was in LA.
And the pointer thing never points in the direction the car is actually moving.
Gmaps thinks that I'm drifting my car when I'm driving normal!
Only ever when I enter a lengthy tunnel.
Never just randomly for no apparent reason.
The arrow going backwards or sideways, on the other hand....
Every device I own (which is a lot, about 13) does that. In every navigational app. It's a hilarious bug. (the Police disagreed on the hilarity of it when they pulled us over because I was sitting with my back towards the road (as a passenger.). "Blame Google, they said we were going backwards!")
My location services also tends to pick out random locations to display in other apps as my current location.
Awkward conversations in Facebook as a consequence: "What the hell are you doing in the arse end of Serbia?" "I'm in Vienna." "Not according to Facebook." "It's lying." "Or you are. What're you up to?" "That's moderately disturbing."
I don't use Google maps much. Roaming is a nightmare on a continent where there's a border every 400-600km. Mostly use MapsWithMe. I don't require a route planner, I can read a map. As a bonus, it doesnt require the locations permission for Gapps.
I used to use NavFree, but it couldn't distinguish between a country road, theme park ride and bicycle lane. (That was interesting.) And then they made the maps free for only a year, so I moved on to a better app.

Not sure how long ago you used navfree but it's been good for me so far and I didn't see anything about free for only 1yr?
I'll check outl mapswithme but the free version looks a bit too lite.
I have the same issue since the latest update. I am straggling to get a gps lock. Also have the issue with the pointer always facing north. i think Samsung tried to fix the AT&T gps issue and scr*** everyone else
What are you all on,JB or KK?
Not having the issue,
Kitkat DBT XXUENB7/XXUENB1/DBTENB2
Maps version 7.7.0 (I have auto update fully disabled. Don't fix what isn't broken is my motto.)
