[Q] Email settings database in ROM - Android Software Development

Hi all. I'm pretty new in the Android world but I like to learn so I can do stuff myself instead of depending on others for my personal needs.
Here's my question : When you setup an email account, it seems like there's a database with the settings (like POP and SMTP servers) for various providers. Since I'm in Canada with Telus, most custom Roms for my HTC Desire don't seem to include settings for Canadian ISP like Bell Sympatico. Same goes for APN settings.
Now my question is how would I get that said database from an original Rom (RUU or backup maybe) to add them to a custom one?
Hope that was clear and thanks in advance.

Automatic configuratio of GPRS/MMS/VPN

I'm neither a software delevoper or hardcore techie, however this applies to several models so i didnt know where to post. And this is a software question, so i figured you probably could give me an answer.
We have several HTC Tornado and Wizard's, and to get exchange to work on them we have to use custom GPRS and VPN settings. Does there exist a solution where our users could just type in the domain username and password in an application and application configure the GPRS VPN settings on the phone/PDA.
Or possibly make a config/registry file on the computer, convert it to cab and run it on the phone.
Dangaard (a norwgian distributer of HTC phones) made a GRPS/MMS configurator application that you install on the phone, run and choose which operator you have, and it changes your GPRS/MMS settings to that operator.
Something like that is what i'm looking for, but to include VPN and ActiveSync settings also.

Cannot send MMS messages!

Ever since I have had my wizard I have not been able to send MMS messages, when I try it later says that the message could not be sent and that it will be filed under drafts. I have tried many different ROMs with no difference. Finally got annoyed enough to post about it. Can anyone help me?
kinda hard to help if you don't indicate who your service provider is and what type of plan you have.
Since the settings are different for the various carriers, most roms don't set up the connections because that would make them carrier specific. (even if you find a carrier specific rom it won't do setups for specific plans)
You have to manually set up your connections, or find a CAB for you carrier and plan.

'Dedicated' Internet setting for mail in cooked ROMS (for Telstra HD2)

Hi Rom Cookers,
I flashed to Atremis Cooked ROM (do not like the Telstra ROM and all the BS that ships with it) and noticed there is a problem, which I suspect may exist on most cooked ROMS that are built on stock ROM's.
The Telstra devices ship with two kinds of 'Connection' settings, Dedicated, and Internet.
The 'Internet' setting is for stock standard internet, whilst the 'Dedicated' connection setting is for people that use Telstra's plan which includes 'free MS exchange mail syncing, etc'. The problem in my case is that when under a dedicated plan, but using the internet setting, I get charged ridiculous rates for using mail and internet. And in the cooked ROM's, there is no setting for 'dedicated'.
Does any chef know how to restore this setting?
Any help would be much appreciated, keep up the good work
Thank you.
EDIT: Just so everyone knows exactly where to find this setting, (it's kind of hidden) you get to it like this:
Start > Email > Menu > Options > Tap 'Outlook Email' > Click Next through the settings screens until you reach the 'Edit Server Settings' screen (this displays 4 checkboxes with 'Contacts' 'Email' 'Calender' 'Tasks' > Press Menu > Press Advanced > Then you will see 3 dropdown menus, last menu should be 'Connection', drop this box down to see your options.. It will likely have just 'Internet'. Telstra ROM's have 'Dedicated' and 'Internet'...
I need to find out how to restore the 'Dedicated' setting
Thanks again to anyone who can help!
Anyone, please?

Let me know if you find an answer to this please. I can add this dimension to the problem: if you take a standard Telstra $80 plan, you get 600MB data included. But if you go for the MS Exchange add on, they charge you an extra $20 pm and REDUCE your data to 100MB. I use around 300MB per month browisng the internet (and a lot less through Activesync for MS Exchange). In other words, on the standard plan, the 600MB would be fine. But because of the reduced data allowance, I have to pay an further $20 for a 1G data pack, resulting in me paying $40 pm extra. If someone could tell me that Activesync works well on a standard plan using a stock rom, that would be great. But the posts I've seen suggest that once you flash with an non-Telstra rom, there are problems with Activesync.
when you hard reset a telstra stock rom (or when you first get it outa the box) does it go through a network setup stage during first boot? (my euro one did) cos if so, its probably a small app rather than hard coded settings, and then you could dump the stock rom into a kitchen and extract the networksetup and make it into a cab? maybe? (i'm no chef)
Might be a hassle, but either flash back to stock and/or find another person with a HD2 that wasn't flashed, load up a registry editor, and go to:
HKLM/Comm/ConnMgr/Providers
and poke through there.
To give you a reference, on my phone, under guid 7c4b7... I have a folder connections that might be helpful for you.
Further down, under guid ef097f4... there are more folders which might be useful.
Thanks guys I will check that out and report back, my boss is the only one with an HD2 so I'll need to grab it flash the stock and the Atremis (for example) ROm and compare the differences. Cheers for your replies.
Hi salada2k
Did you manage to get the settings?
My drop-down menu shows
Telstra Broadband
Telstra Enterprise
Telstra MMS
Telstra Internet
Work
The internet
Argento,
What is the apn shown under Telstra Enterprise?
Hi Guys,
I have two Telstra HD2's with Dutty roms on them, I use Telstra pre-paid on both.
I am having an issue with my exchange and IMAP accounts. I think it is a related issue as my data works fine in opera but I can only send &receive when connected to WiFi. when I do try to send/receive on data i get a connection error message, interestingly I get the same message if i try to use data with Skype or an app called "known food".
I would welcome any assistance.

[Q] Do APN user details matter?

Hi there
just a quick question really to see if anyone on here can help. I have a STD O2 data only SIM does it make any difference to speed and/or connectivity if we use different username and passwords?
I'm told to use mobile web and password but web/web seems to give me far better connection.
Is this just me!?
Any help is appreciated

Theoretically it shouldn't but...
An APN is the software "front-end" of an hardware physical equipment called a GGSN. The GGSN is the Gateway (that's what the first "G" stands for) between you (your carrier network) and the other networks (Internet to be simple). One GGSN contains a few APN but an APN is located on one and only one GGSN...
The GGSN acts like a kind of firewall (filter users or special traffics or the access to some websites) and sometimes shapes your web page to adapt it to your screen.
So for all these reasons, when you change your APN your web experience can drastically change (speed and aspect of internet pages eg.) On the other hand I'm not aware of different behaviour of the same APN with different credentials (username/password) but it's totally possible. To be really confirmed with different speedtest.net...
I use bypass instead of mobileweb and images are clearer in Opera, nearly Wifi clear.
So that answers the question : the same APN reacts differently with different accounts (and compress differently the pictures)...
Good to know...
Here in France, operators are not working it the same way as far as I know (I don't even put password in my APN config...)

[Q] APN text message setup. pushing the apn settings through sms.

I saw somewhere online, that setting up the APN on your android phone for cricket wireless customers is as easy as installing them from the SMS text message which the network pushes to your phone upon joining.
How is this done?
How can I make this same type of SMS message?
Will the sms network allow me to send these APN settings to a friend? Or would that be dependent upon the carrier?
If the APN settings cannot be send over plain SMS network, how can I create the one-push APN install from the phone locally, for a device that isn’t rooted? (without manually typing the information in..)(without using recovery..)
Thanks in advance,
Any resources are appreciated.
hello!
I'm having the same issue - in my current project I need to setup APN for internet access on iOS and Android non-rooted phones.
Did you get any ideas or solutions?
thanks in advance!
PS
I so much very hope that there is a solution x)
or else I'll have to ask users to configure APN settings manually, which is so inappropriate for a user-friendly service.
