Galaxy Tablet and Printing....? - Galaxy Tab General

I recently got my Samsung Galaxy tablet and the longer I have it the more I find myself using it instead of my laptop or desktop. I ran into a situation this weekend where I needed to print some thing out and it made me realize that there really isn't any printing support on any Android device that I know of. Has anyone seen a work around or a custom installation of CUPS for Android with support for TCP/IP printing?
Thanks,
whit3if3

I use printer share from the market. Works great for me.

The Tab supports direct printing to specific Samsung wireless printers out of the box (allegedly!).

Have a look at the HP ePrint Printers. Print from any device that can send an email. Just been in PC World and they have them on offer. Might get one before VAT increase.

There its also a canon app in the market that will print to canon wifi capable printers...

Anybody have any better solutions then printer share? i tried it and it seems ok but it wont print from the browser i am using it seems to have its own browser that doesnt support flash.
what is the best way to print currently over wifi to an hp printer?
THANKS!!

Printer share won't print flash because their browser doesn't support thee plugin, but for most operations you can just use the share from menu. Supposedly firefox beta 3 has save page as pdf, try save the site as pdf and print via printer share

Do you know where I could find a list of compatible printers? I'm in the market for a new one, and this would be great feature to have.

We use Printbot to print to our network printers. It has a ton of supported printers.

One source could be Galaxy Tab manual. Printing is described in it.
However, app called PrinterShare supports many more printers if they have ip addresses. I have two printers: Brother (laser one) and Epson workhorse 610 presented on my network. Both of them are also visible and selectable on the Tab.
Printing is not the same as on Mac or Windows. You start with PrinterShare and from it go to application where is the document you want to print.
It is very usable although quality is the same as the screen mostly. It does not scale image to fit a page. For me it is good enough - money well spent. It is really amazing being able to print from the Tab or phone.
Developer is constantly updating it and I believe it will match desktop printing in the near future.

Since samsung only support there own printers I would reccomend using this printbot app if you do not have a samsung supported printer.
I have used printbot with konica-minolta, hp, and cannon printers.

[Q] best word and excel editing app?

Hello guys.
Wich would you consider to be the best office document editing app (especially for excell files) out there on the market, regardless of price?
Best MS compatibility for ME!!
QuickOffice HD- best compatibility I've found - about £9 in the market.
Only downside is that the app only accesses the internal memory (SDCard) not any external memory.
Hope someone can show me how soon.....
I use docs to go.there are several none out there that is great at everything
Another options get a Hotmail account. Windows live.they have a cloud service you store documents with them and can edit and create Ms documents but it requires data services
I found Polaris Office to be the best. You can even have it using all your favorite fonts if you put them in system/fonts.
Quickoffice HD is second best since it does miss proper size/alignments in ppt.
The rest can't even get page margins right, no use wasting your time for now.
I am currently on my quest to fin the perfect office app as well. I mainly bought my Iconia for college so I need an app to be able to write papers with. I bought QuickOffice HD and yeah you can change the font, align text and font size, but you can't really do much else. You can't resize margins, can't edit or insert headers, can't even I out bullets! All of these crucial features for writting your MLA paper. I even tried importing a document that already had a header in it and you can see the header but you can't edit it.
I gave DocsToGo a shot and it seemed more featured packed with the paragraph edit and bullet input options, but I didn't go too far I depth with it since it was only the trial.

I'll have to give this one a try will report back!
polaris office is the very best IMO
You guys can apply for the beta for softmaker. I won't give more details, it's nothing to be curious about unless you really want to help. It is laggy and unusable on tablets and the UI is not yet optimized, but it can display the page perfectly, paragraphs columns, everything and won't break the compatibility with MSoffice.
Polaris!
I have Polaris office but since I upgraded to android 3.1 I keep getting force close issues.

If you're rooted you can get USB Mount All, which can mount your external_sd under the internal one so any other app can access it. Works for me on QuickOffice HD and Docs to Go.

Yes, that's libre office. But Oracle has now donated OpenOffice back to the open source world (APACHE) and IBM has donated millions of lines of code to OpenOffice from its Symphony product, so I think this'll breathe new life into OpenOffice now. See

Xoom for College

Going off on my second year at the University of Cincinnati. Wanted to see if there were any other Xoom'ers here going off to college and what exactly they planned to used their Xooms for. If they are replacing their laptop all together or what. I know I am now going to dock my laptop in my apartment and carry my Xoom around campus.
Any other students here?
I used mine a lot for school. I just purchased a stylus from Ebay and downloaded Writepad from the Themes & Apps section to test out this semester. I use it for taking notes and recording lectures.

I found Write Pad to be kind of laggy. I use Maple Paint and I've heard Tab Notes works well.
Also, FlexT9 (from Nuance, the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking) is a great 4 in one keyboard (tap, swipe, speak and handwrite) you can add to its dictionary...overall great app.

Well, I'm not too impressed with any of them, using a stylus. Those things really need improvement. And writing with my finger just feels kind of funny...

I have been using mine at college since Feb. abd I love it. Last semester, I mainly just carried my laptop around to type all of my notes and used Evernote to sync them to my tab. I used thinking space for creating for brainstorming. I didn't want to hand write all of my notes because of how clunky it felt. Plus, there was no way I could keep up with my professors without typing my notes. I find that most of my classes that use websites for homework run well on my tab.
This semester I am going to try to leave my laptop in my dorm and just carry my tab around.

Still a ways to go for business users as well, unless you are using it for credit card swiping. It's good for transactions. Intuit has a pretty good little android app.
I do use my Zoom for work. I am using Quickoffice Pro with cloud computing to take notes at meetings. Sometimes I also use the bluetooth keyboard. This combination allows me to create, view, or edit any Word document. I also use it to check and answer all my google and exchange email. Through the VPN native app and a remote desktop app, I can connect to my office desktop to run work programs. It is a very functional business device.

I agree. If you learn what the Xoom and productivity apps are capable of, and realize what the Xoom is NOT capable of, it can be a very productive device.
The first thing you have to have is a computer (running XP is best) on the Internet 24/7. That doesn't appeal to some, but I've done it for years.
With a handful of select apps (or their equivelants), you can make your Xoom nearly (NEARLY) as productive as a laptop.
PhoneMyPC-
I view files and run programs on my desktop remotely using this. I even view a webcam with audio. It cannot download/upload.
DropBox-
Makes PhoneMyPC worth it. You can upload/download via DropBox, giving PhoneMyPC the one thing it lacks.
PrinterShare-
Prints anything at any time directly to my home or office printer, instantly. Will locate nearby wifi printers, too.
FTPCafe-
I have 4 websites and can manage them all from my Xoom now with this tool. Upload/download files, create folders, change permissions, etc. Great stuff. Increases my productivity 10 fold. Idownload html docs, make changes, and reupload them.
Documents to Go-
Microsoft editing suite emulator. Was really great, but since I bought it others have come out with better ones. A must have for pproductivity, however none of the apps seem to have the best of everything. You really need to research this one. Some won't replicate docs with the right margins, etc, while others (like mine) won't let Excel do equasions with sub-sheets. It can be frustrating, but there is a great thread around here on this topic pitting a few of the best against each other.
Then there are the usual smart phone Android apps, such as recorders, write pads, etc.
Prior to getting the Xoom, I used to lug around a bohemeth laptop. Now I have discovered the joy of lightwieght freedom by taking the fullest advantage of my home and office networks that Android apps have to offer. And they're always coming oput with better stuff!
Right now I'm typing on the Motorola BT keyboard and using a BT mini mouse with my Xoom in the dock, charging.
-My laptops are getting dusty. I've since yanked their hard drives and occassionally cable them to my tablet for anything I might need.
I will say this; there is definitely a learning curve associated with using the Xoom to try to replace your laptop. I've been learning how to do it since March, so if someone were to ask me, should I get Xoom or a laptop for school, I wouldn't tell them to get the tablet. But with practice, it CAN be done.
Android tablet apps are gearing towards productivity, though. I've already impressed my boss with AndCAD and some 3D model viewers, and using SolidWorks at work via my home network (Phone My PC) and then importing the files to my tablet (DropBox) and then loading them to a thumbdrive for him to give to the engineering dept.
But without having practiced that a lot, I could have looked like a bumbling fool in front of my boss.
-It's really like learning a whole new way to use a computer.
Note, all the apps I mentioned are pricey and you may want to do research before deciding on alternatives. Hope this helps.
They are pricey compared to many android apps (so many great free apps) but compared to PC software, they are super cheap. I just use my desktop and the Xoom. My life is so much easier now. I really wish I had something like this when I was in grad school.

Do you have the Rom that contained it? Or know where it came from?
Might be able to help you if you can tell me.
@subnoize soulja..... Depends which make and model of printer you are using. I use both a wifi Canon MG5220 and a wifi Epson Artisan700. Both the following apps are free in the Market/Playstore and both work with the above 2 printers. You can print pictures and documents from your A500. Best part of it is you are not involved with those apps which allow you "one print" and then charge you. You'll have to check the apps to see if your model of printer is supported. Both apps work very well. Almost forgot the apps are (1) Epson iPrint and (2) Canon EPP.

Are you sure canon epp prints docs? Most of the comments say it's limitation to printing photos is the major drawback. Not at home or I'd check myself.
I use PrinterShare Mobile Print. Works well enough with my Brother HL2170W. Plus it is free.

But it's not really free, you have to buy a licence key don't you?
@irishmoe..... Yup you are quite right, I lumped the two printer apps together instead of pointing out that only the Epson iPrint will print both Photos and Saved Documents and Web Pages I suppose the "epp" part of the Canon app (Easy Photo Print) rather gives the game away ...lol... Although I haven't tried it the Canon app also claims to print scanned PDF files which could be quite useful. Bearing in mind that both apps are free it doesn't hurt to do as I do i.e. run both apps so you cover all eventualities (providing you've got both a Canon and an Epson printer)
Both in my opinion are better than supposedly "free" apps that are only free to download but later charge you for a licence key (which you already pointed out) or allow you only one or two documents printed per month before charging you.

I believe the free has limited printing, while you can buy the premium for unlimited printing. I do not print much from my tablet so I have not needed the premium key. An occasional document from time to time is all I have done.

I don't print much either but when I do it's usually a good few pages of reports so it probably wouldn't be a good fit for me.
I can't get acerprint to find my printer. bugging the crap out of me.
---------- Post added at 10:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 PM ----------
@ metpolds ... I only have the canon and I want to print word docs more than anything else.
@irishmoe..... Not certain that this will help you but you could give it a try. As the "Canon epp" app seems to print PDF documents and provided you are using Office 2007 or later you could "save as" your document in a ".PDF" format and see if the app will print it. I must be honest and say I haven't tried this myself and I have my doubts that it will work but I suppose there is nothing to lose by trying?
If all else failed, try the cloud print app. Only drawback is that a computer that is attached to that printer in a network must be on for it to work. Worked fine for me since I have a server at home.
@metpods I'm using polaris and only the tablet. I have a dinosaur laptop at home that I rarely turn on, never get round to replacing.
@deboyz , as I said above I rarely turn on the laptop.
I have tried the acer printer app built into the acer 4.3 roms . It does find my Brother wifi printer but it says Incompatible .. Im guessing it will only work with acer printers????.
The brother i print works well BUt only prints saved documents and is not integrated into the os like the acer print is. Look for a print app for your brand printer or setup google chrome on your laptop or desktop connected to the printer and install the Google Cloud print plug in.. Google has alot of information on how to set it up and use it.. OHH You have to install a cloud print app on your phone .
Good Luck

[Q] TV Remote App, learning IR code?

I've managed to get the TV remote app to work on proper brand name TVs in my house (Samsung, Panasonic), but the TV in my room is a Sanyo. The app lists Sanyo as compatible, but none of the IR codes work on it
I was wondering if anyone knew of a different brand option that might work with the Sanyo TV. The HTC One TV remote has an IR learning option, where if you can't find your TV brand, you simply point the TV remote at the phone's IR sensor, long press the power button, and the app will learn the IR code. The GS4 app doesn't seem to have this option, and I can't find a way to get the remote app to work with my TV.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's called WatchON. Apparently the same company (Peel Technologies or something) makes both the GS4 and HTC1 IR remote apps, but the GS4 version is missing some features.

Have you updated the app? It contained some additional IR codes.
AFAIK, there should be an option to email the company, if you can describe it with the model number, etc, I'm sure they'll be able to update the app with some more IR codes.

the WatchOn app is a horrible bit of code.
In order to remove an accidentally added remote you have to clear all data in the program and start again.
On top of that they have only 1 or 2 codes for each TV brand, it is really sad how little work went into the program.
Also the GS4 has a IR transmitter, but not a receiver so we could not do a learning setup if we wanted to.
I am looking for a new program which can take advantage of the IR LED but so far have not come up with anything.
There is touchsquid which is not cheap but appears to be probably the most fully featured such program available. Or at least that I can find lol There is also this one which I just ran into yesterday buy haven't had time to peruse yet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5yZW1vdGVmYWlyeSJd The main problem I have with the latter is that I couldn't find any information on whether they will let you run it for a bit to see how it works. As those who have tried to set up more complex systems with good automation know it can take a while to find the flaws and just to flat get everything working. I would want at least a 10 day trial to make a decision.
I mean is it so hard to implement learning function so that you can take any ir remote and copy its codes to phone!? I've had my Casio wrist watch for more than 14 years now and it has ir functionality and, more importantly, learning function so I can literary control anything that has an ir remote.
Try this free app . It's good

I ended up going with this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en It does cost a fair bit, but it's a really good app. It didn't work with my TV first, but I emailed the app devs and they updated it to include my TV the next day, their customer support was great.

Same! It controls my Sony TV and Foxtel box. I wonder if it can learn codes?

In order to remove an accidentally added remote you have to clear all data in the program and start again.
On top of that they have only 1 or 2 codes for each TV brand, it is really sad how little work went into the program.

LOL what? You have to clear all the data and start again? Hahaha. You're doing it wrong.

Care to explain then how to remove a single device, as I walked through every single menu and there is no way of doing it from within the Samsung supplied app that I could see.
And having been a user of android devices since inception I would state that even if it is possible it is far from intuitive.

How is everyone watching the 2016 Rio Olympics on the Nvidia Shield?

How is everyone watching the 2016 Rio Olympics on the Nvidia Shield? Is it possible to watch the whole thing in 1080p?
NBC sports has an app for the olympics that i have on my Amazon firestick....i managed to find an apk that installs/works on the shield. Trouble is controlling the app, none of my remotes work, neither does the controller....lucky for me, my trusty old logitech k400 keyboard works just fine with it! Great app....TONS of coverage to choose from.

Can you share via Dropbox or google drive please.
Ladies/Gents, figured I'd check XDA to see if anyone had success finding a reputable NBC Sports Live Extra APK. I found many, but saw this one here (https://appraw.com/apk/nbc-sports-live-extra-apk-download-2dkxb). Is that the one you're using? If not, can you please provide a link to the one you are using or PM me? Gracias!

sorry....wasn't sure if posting links was allowed, so thats why i did not provide one.
yes that is the same version i am using. not the site that i got it from, but thats the app! i was able to sideload it and install without a problem. it has crashed/fc a few times on me, but for the most part it works just fine. the app opens in portrait mode most of the time...but once you click on an event to view it, it switches to landscape and plays in fullscreen. not sure if its 1080p, but looks good to me (720p maybe?).
as i stated earlier....only thing that works to control it for me is a wireless keyboard w/trackpad. to scroll up/down through the list of events, i have to use two-finger swipe on the trackpad....arrows don't seem to work.
I thought I had notification setup for this subscribed thread, but apparently I did not! Thanks for replying as I have been using that same app and experiencing the same thing. So far so good!
