How is everyone watching the 2016 Rio Olympics on the Nvidia Shield? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How is everyone watching the 2016 Rio Olympics on the Nvidia Shield? Is it possible to watch the whole thing in 1080p?

NBC sports has an app for the olympics that i have on my Amazon firestick....i managed to find an apk that installs/works on the shield. Trouble is controlling the app, none of my remotes work, neither does the controller....lucky for me, my trusty old logitech k400 keyboard works just fine with it! Great app....TONS of coverage to choose from.

Ladies/Gents, figured I'd check XDA to see if anyone had success finding a reputable NBC Sports Live Extra APK. I found many, but saw this one here (https://appraw.com/apk/nbc-sports-live-extra-apk-download-2dkxb). Is that the one you're using? If not, can you please provide a link to the one you are using or PM me? Gracias!

I am using SlingTv works great

sorry....wasn't sure if posting links was allowed, so thats why i did not provide one.
yes that is the same version i am using. not the site that i got it from, but thats the app! i was able to sideload it and install without a problem. it has crashed/fc a few times on me, but for the most part it works just fine. the app opens in portrait mode most of the time...but once you click on an event to view it, it switches to landscape and plays in fullscreen. not sure if its 1080p, but looks good to me (720p maybe?).
as i stated earlier....only thing that works to control it for me is a wireless keyboard w/trackpad. to scroll up/down through the list of events, i have to use two-finger swipe on the trackpad....arrows don't seem to work.

I thought I had notification setup for this subscribed thread, but apparently I did not! Thanks for replying as I have been using that same app and experiencing the same thing. So far so good!

Just go to mobile.tvcatchup.com (or m.tvcatchup.com) set up an account and login, streams are viewed via the streaming app, however I think it only works if in the uk..
Oh it appears that mobile.tvcatchup.mobi doesn't work but m.tvCatchup.mobi does? Lol
Thank you! I'll be watching the world cup on there! Seems to be better quality than yamgo

Help, can it be done? AllShare Cast nexus 10 to Samsung tv

Hi I recently got the 2013 Samsung 8 series TV and was wondering if there is a way to enable all share cast on the nexus 10 for screen mirroring? I have this feature on my siii given its also a Samsung device
Looking around the inter web information is a little vague and conflicting!
Thanks
Dan

For screen mirroring you will need a miracast capable device. Initially the Nexus 10 was supposed to have miracast, but I doesn't (to my knowledge).
You can stream videos and pictures to your tv over WiFi using apps like imedia or bubbleUPnP. (or any dlna player)

I believe it has the capability of doing so hardware-wise, but the settings for it aren't enabled or visible. I think the memory bus or something would be a limitation due to having to push 2560x1600, but perhaps we can just change the resolution (there's some HDMI command thing found recently that does this) and use that?
Yea, wished we could enable it.
I have a netgear ptv3000 receiver. Works well with my dad's Note II.

thanks for the replies.
To give some more background, until very recently i was running XBMC on a win8 front room PC and Yatse on the nexus 10.
the joy was that if i was watching videos on the nexus i could hit Share/Send to Yatse and the XBMC would automatically start playing the stream for me on the TV.
thats the functionality i am looking for.
A lot that I have seen on the play store are simply players in their own right which if i look at my usage is not what i want.
ideally the right app would sit in the background as a service and catch any source (you tube, pictures, music, mxplayer or any where else I can press share/send to)
has anyone seen anything like this ?
at this point i am less interested in screen mirroring as such (until i want to play need for speed on the big tv!!)...
thanks
Dan.

Don't forget, this will allow either the nexus 10, your pc, or a home server to stream media to your tv through WiFi . You just have to make sure the settings in your tv are on for dlna and that your tv is connected to your network.

Yes It Can!?
Initially it was said that N10 would support Miracast
Then we were told neither N7 or N10 would support it.
Now Miracast has been enabled and working for N7, see
ht tp s://github .com/kensuke/ How-to-Miracast-on-AOSP/wiki and ht tp://w ww. you tube.com/watch?v=KNEmaIr3FEg
Even though Kensuke warned about trying it I went ahead and installed the non-tested OTA package for N10
I did not experience any loops as he was afraid of, no errors at all and it seems stable.
The OTA package seems stable but Miracast may or may not work.
I do have "Wireless display" in the menu now. I also believe searching for miracast receiver was working the first time I booted the tablet. Unfortunately I didnt have a miracast receiver nearby then and when I got home it seemed like I had lost the possibility to search for receivers.
I still have "Wireless Display" in the menu though.
Just spreading the word. Maybe and hopefully someone smarter then me would be able to make use of the patch :fingers-crossed:

Missing Apps, Sideloaded App and observations

First of all I just got to say the fact that I don't have simple apps such as ABC, Fox or HBO Go is a letdown. I still have to switch between my NP and ATV. I don't understand why the NP is so restrictive. I wish I can run full android with the android TV interface. Not this walled garden without many good apps.
What I really like about the NP is the recommendations feature of Android TV. It is well done and pulls in the videos from various apps. I like this curation.
I use the sideloader app and cloud to side load apps. I was able to side load the MSG Go app on the NP. Noticed that it was in portrait mode so I had to download another app to force landscape on all apps. When I watch the video on the msg go app it isn't crisp. I see the scan lines on the movement from the basketball games and the quality isn't HD. On my iPad the same app looks great. Both run off the same wifi so I don't know why the quality is bad on the NP. Maybe there is a setting I need to toggle but the other videos are fine.
What really is frustrating is that apps like Netflix don't work when updated, I have to turn off auto updates for apps to not break anything. It is difficult to know when an update will improve or break an app. It is also difficult to know when an app is compatible or a great android app can be side loaded without compromise.
If anyone has any advise please lay it on me.

You can sideload and install whatever you like onto it. But developers have to say they support Android TV in order for it to appear on the Nexus Player through the store because a lot of them don't work with just a remote control, and devs don't want to get emails or bad reviews for not supporting it. You wanna complain about this, go moan at the devs for not making their app suitable for a TV interface.

Well thats a risk you're gonna have to live with. If its deemed compatible by the developers, it'll be in the Play Store to install on the Nexus Player. If its not, its your risk. There's endless apps, and a very small market for Android TV so a lot of devs just won't bother yet.
Exactly my point. Great experience horrible development
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Maybe the point is that you DON'T sideload. Just because it can be done doesn't mean you'll get a good experience when you do it.
The way Google intended it to be is as a heavily curated selection.....or so they say.
I used to side load but now I don't. I'm not going to use an air mouse or keyboard to control my TV. Usually if there isn't an official app like HBO Go, you can still cast. I would much rather do this than hack my way through some side loaded app.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
I think we are still in a transitional period. Small developers are trying to get the most from their work so they go different places. But some of this stuff is simply politics. Fox, ABC, HBO, Amazon make political choices not based on hardware or software limitations. Why does Watch ESPN work on Fire TV with the controller but on the Nexus Player you need to sideload and use a mouse? Politics at play. Why do I have to sideload Kodi onto the Fire TV? More politics.

Side loading is the only way to get the apps that I use regularly on the device I want it on. My point is that it shouldn't be a walled garden and Google should make it so apps like abc, ESPN etc are already on the system. No reason for those basic ones not to be.

It isn't a walled garden if you can sideload. However you are expecting all sideloaded apps to run as they are on a TV when they are made to be used on a touchscreen in the first place.
What you should be ranting is why not more companies or devs release apps that are remote optimized, instead of barking up the wrong tree. Google isn't stopping those companies from releasing TV compatible apps - those companies are the ones not doing so.

New to Google Player ...

Greetings!
Just got Google Player and psyched. Was wondering if someone can point me to good threads already on the forum that talks/educates about making this box more useful?
Thank you!
Just got one myself. Seems good although I thought there would be more apps available on the playstore. I've installed Kodi(playstore) and set it up after watching various vids on YouTube. Kodi is a must. You can watch or listen to practically anything. Enjoy.

There's apps that you won't see on the Play Store within the NP, but if you go on your computer browser you will see that they are compatible with the NP so you could install them through there. You could also side load apps.
FYI....you could buy an OTG cable along with a USB hub and attach additional storage or keyboard and mouse to it as well.
I bought the Startech Micro USB to USB OTG Host Adapter on amazon for $5 and it works perfect.

You can sideload apps without rooting it. Just look up how to sideload (super easy) and just download the .apk files. Your mind will be blown by what this small device can do.
Any apks you can recommend. Any with nexus player support. I bought a USB mouse but can get frustrating at times.

Depends what you want to do. I know there's a list of apps and what not in the general thread I believe. Basically just about every app gets moved over at some point.

Looks like it got removed from the play store. It's on fdroid now. https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=dolphin&fdid=org.dolphinemu.dolphinemu

So i see a guide helping you to set this up, it says you need to use the old version of dolphin with triiforce emulation (they removed it a while back), so you use Dolphin 4.0-309 to achieve making a save stateas controllers don't work on this version, then install Dolphin 4.0-315 as this version will let you play once you have the save state that skips the intro.
So these are rough instructions i come across and followed, the apks install but force close when i try to open them. Tbf i have only tried this on my phone ATM but not sure why there would be an apk that doesn't even run.

Dolphin on shield works nicely, especially the new update with a few different settings you can achieve close to full speed on a lot of games now. There are plenty videos on YouTube of shield running dolphin - check em out so you can see performance.
These apks don't run on my phone or my shield, they just force close so i guess that's the end of the road..
https://dolphin-emu.org/download/list/Triforce/1/ can people try the apks on this list and see if they run on your android device
anyone?
