Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know that over the next week or so, I will be adding some video guides on how to do things under Ubuntu.
My guides can be found here: http://www.xxthe3dmanxx.com/guides.html
Current Video Guides:
Editing Images in an Android .apk in Ubuntu
Hopefully they will help some new people looking to learn!
Looks very interesting, thanks!
Will definitely check out. Have switched to Ubuntu from Windows since 8.04.
Since people are going to come here not realizing its for ubuntu,
here is a thread with videos I made last night showing how to root/odin/flash/apply a theme

was the OP not good info? i didnt see the thread anywhere in the dev section and a XOOM sytstem dump seems like dev worthy material... i know i would have never seen it if it was not posted... i dont spend to much time in the HD2 section, only this one. i get that it was posted already in another section but isnt that why there are specific sections on this forum? otherwise the first post of the system dump would be packed full all the people with all the diffrent phones and tablets. and i know i dont go searching all the other subforum stuff for GTAB related info...
so off my soap box now... lol thanks for the find and for the post!! cant wait to see what this brings us!!
I've been mucking about with the system image, trying to get it to run, from a VEGAn base, not been successful so far. But my experience with ROM devving has been scant, to say the least
Basically I tried pushing the xoom system files straight on top of a VEGAn install, which ran out of space! Then tried just the xoom system, which fit, but rebooted to recovery and "erasing MSC" came up.
Then tried a mix of both, which had permissions errors (no +x on /system/bin), which when fixed, led to a reboot to recovery.
And then my lunch break was over, so I had to get back to real work Will do some reading tonight (Now + 4 hours or so), and a more thorough look at how VEGAn hangs together, and how stuffing a honeycomb /system into it will help us out.

Thats why I said the third thread posted today about the same thing. It has been moved from the development thread multiple times because its not development. Without a boot.img this system dump is completely worthless. There still files that are needed from nvidia that are not in this dump.

ah i see, i didnt understand your reply. So the system dump cannot offer anything from a dev standpoint over the SDK that we already have?

I didn't know the other two threads were moved? I was wondering why they were in the general section because like the OP I was unaware what was needed to cook or port a ROM.
This would have been nice to know right away.

If we had a boot img yes but by itself it doesnt do much. Sorry but as a regular user here at xda I get tired of seeing the same thread started over and over and its usually by n00bs who think they've discovered the wheel. I'm not putting you in that group as I can tell by your questions you are genuinely interested and are thinking before you post. I promise you that several of us have links to places where info shows up first and that as soon as there is a rom worth using it will be posted her as sticky for everyone to try. Have some patience and let the devs do their work.........or should I "gtfo"
EDIT:I am not a dev
How they build a rom to NOOK without Boot Image
I know XOOM running Tagra 2. The first vision of SDK compatible for that Nooks processor. But however they run 3.0 on Nook. But now we have full system dump running on Xoom. Why we can't do like Nook guy's?
Because the Nook Honeycomb is made from a preview SDK without any optimizations made for Tegra 2. The Nook barely runs it.
We need a dump from a Tegra 2 device or access to the AOSP HC source library-neither of which are currently available.
/end

n00bs need info too. At least the OP didn't post a super annoying post with CAPS and exclamation marks...screaming that he has the system dump like Paul Revere. I thought he was just totally misinformed...like me.
You shouldn't gtfo, I bet the OP learned something from these threads just like me.

Notice he said reading.....All I did was read for 2 weeks before I started posting and I havent started 1 thread. I agree that noobs need to ask questions but at least look for the answer first. If you end on the irc you will find I'm one of the first people to help someone. These constant new threads with the same subject matter are just cluttering up the forum and making it impossible for noobs to learn anything because the real information is buried in endless....THE HONEYCOMB XOOM DUMP IS OUT.....WHY DON"T WE HAVE A HONEYCOMB ROM YET!!!!!!!......threads. Or one of the 100 threads started asking how to install clockwork or a rom. Most questions can be answered in the sticky posts alone but no one wants to read. They want they info spelled out to them personally. This doesn't go for everyone but its certainly intended for the "honeycomb is on the Nook, why not on the GTab now that we have a system dump" crowd.

I agree on the need to read... I have read and read, I haven't asked because I was learning slowly about all things android. For me it is hard to ask questions for fear of being called a "noob" and told to "read and search". I appreciate what those who know have done for people like me.
Glad to see you did'nt leave frogman!
I'm very glad to see that everyone's excited, but this is not going to be an easy task, at least not for me (I can't speak for the other devs and modders of whom I bow to their collective genius).
A system dump is a start, but it's not the whole picture. It's like putting together a new bicycle that's sort of the same as the old kind, but with no manual and only half the parts. Trust me, I've already tried and for longer than you might know - so far no dice.
You want to help us out? If you plan to buy one of these tomorrow, try to root it and get us a boot.img. Or the unlocked bootloader. Or a full nvflash dump would be wonderful (that's how I got the Adam mod to work on a GTAB - not because I'm a genius but because I was darn lucky that NI was forced to release an nvflash dump). I'll even take an init.rc - anything would be appreciated.
But chants of "what don't we have a port yet?" over isn't going to help us at all (and you know who you are). Seriously, I would greatly appreciate it if you would please stop. Thanks in advance.

dude, you've been clamoring on for over a month. It'll be ready when it's ready. Learn to dev yourself or stfu and have a little patience. Pissing off the devs that do this as a hobby will get you nowhere.

Can anyone help me figure out how to change keyboard background?
I have looked through everything and must be missing it somehow...
Well we found the files, edited one to test but now when we reflashed the swype.apk, no virtual keyboard is installed. ADB pushed it, reflashed it, moved it to system/app... no keyboard shows up after only changing one image...
I am confused...
I basically need to figure out how to resign the apk after customizing and I am pretty noob right now..
You'll be better off asking this in the theming subforum.
I figured it out finally. It was me being dumb is all...

Sent from my mind using telepathitalk
Let me get it completely figured out first but then of course!!
To change it, you have to edit swype.apk and I have had to reflash 3 times now because I keep making little errors. It is kind of a painful process!
Well I finally got most of the editing done... I kept it pretty simple as far as the letters and I didn't really try hard with the placements on things because to be honest I wanted to throw the phone after awhile !
But here is a sample of what I did, if there is actually a demand for people wanting to do this then I will write a "how to" but I have to warn you it is painful and you will need experience with photo editing...
I changed the flame color in the background to be different for each mode.
And yes, Swype still works!
Consider this your first demand for a how-to.
Ha.. I will go ahead and get started on it then and post under themes/apps for everyone! I am not taking credit for doing it but I will write the how to for somebody to try.
Maddog and Illinois08 were the biggest help during the process so I will include them in the walk through.

I have placed the how to under themes section.
Let me know if you have any questions...
I had a developer environment set up on my Linux partition and it had everything (not that anything actually worked but I was playing around with things). It recently got corrupted and I can't find a complete guide that give me straight-forward directions on how to set up the JDK, SDK, AVD, Eclipse, and all the repo's.
If anyone knows of any guides I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
I'm not totally familiar, but I believe lithid-CMs thread titled "wanna learn to dev correctly" details how to set up the environment. It's buried somewhere in the development section. Good luck.

Thanks, totally forgot about that one.
If anyone has any other, please feel free to throw them out there.
Give this one a look if you haven't already. I used it on Linux partition and it was super easy and did everything imaginable. It's Tommy Tomato too, so the support is second to none

Found it a few minutes ago. I would have never noticed this if it wasn't posted in this section though.
Thank you guys for all of your hard work! I'll get to work on an instructional video.
The 80%battery thing is something I'm not familiar with. seems like a dealbreaker for some.

Hello folks,
Most likely, I am very very late to the party but here it goes.
My Verizon Xoom 1st gen (OS 4.2.2) has been working flawlessly. To be honest, waiting it to die to justify buying newer tablet to DW, but this darn thing just keeps working. Lately though, it has become atrociously slower. I reset to the factory defaults but after google updates stuff in the background, it becomes crawling slow.
I never bothered with rooting or custom ROM because it was reasonably OK to use. We use it primarily for reading pdf articles and YouTube, thats it. But now it has become really difficult to use. Hence I came here looking for rooting and custom ROM options.
I checked many threads last night and most of the links to the files required for rooting are dead. I am curious if there is anyone with a dump of these files that I could get my hands on.
At the end, all I care is that I should be able to use MoonReader Plus and YouTube. I am OK with other stuff not working, primarily cellular signal and stuff. Does anybody has an idea how I can proceed?
Many thanks in advance.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have downloaded. Hopefully everything is good. Feel free to delete.
I will make a step by step process and post here, just to make sure that I am doing everything right. I hope you (or other folks) won't mind confirming my process. I have rooted all my phones so I am not new to it but older Motorola's particularly do not go easy on me.
Thanks in advance.

My apologies.
A correction to my previous comment. Some of the files didn't work but I think whatever I tried/used I have uploaded on a Google Drive. If you want, I can link those files.
There was a lot of mix up. I was pretty frustrated. I was just flashing every file I could find on the web. So at the end, I myself don't know how or what I flashed that worked. Hence, I didn't post any steps.
I'm looking for details as well. Can you post the additional files from drive?
