Virtual keyboard non responsive - Epic 4G General

Just picked up my epic this weekend. Very happy so far. Unfortunately somehow my virtual keyboard is non responsive. It pops up as it should whenever entering text input mode while in profile view.... however if I try to use it as swype or hunt and peck its like I am not touching the. Screen at all. Therefore I am forced to use. The hardware keyboard for text entry.
I figure this must be operator error because the touch screen works great for everything else. Hopefully someone can give me a clue on what I did wrong..... thanks.

Mine does this alot if the screen ia dirty.

When writing text message, screen jumps up to the conversation

I'm having a problem with writing text messages.
When in a certain conversation, I start to type using the Hardware keyboard, and after a few words the screen just jumps up in a few stages - first I can't see the Attachment button, then the Send button semi-disappears, and then I'm in the middle of the conversation and can't see the typing window anymore.
This is driving me crazy, and worst part - it doesn't always happen! I can't understand in which situation it happens and when it doesn't.
Some more information:
Stock 2.2 firmware and stock messaging application
Using AnySoftKeyboard
Urmm, when writing this message I just noticed that even if I don't type anything, the screen jumps up. meaning I just went into a conversation, put the phone aside to write this message on the forum, and came back finding the screen has jumped up the conversation instead of displaying the typing window.
I was told on another forum that this was discussed on XDA but I can't find anything, any lead would be great. thanks
It would help if you said which stock ROM you are referring to, there are several, depending on your phone sub-model, carrier, region, etc.

Ahhhhh I'm having the same problem! The curser jumps around randomly sometimes causing me to type random letters at differnt parts of the text. Drives me crazy!

ok yeah there's a discussion about this issue in the thread wileykat linked. thanks
From what I understand it has to do with light hitting the trackpad. This happens to me, but only in certain spots in certain rooms.
Like it always happens when I lean back in my chair at my desk, which happens to expose my phone to the ceiling fan. When the light is on is when I get the crazy scrolling which leads me to believe there's some truth in this.

It's the trackpad. Try typing that same message away from a direct light source. Pretty sure the issue will go away. Annoying
Umm, I don't get why you guys think it's the trackpad that's causing this. cause if you are currently in the writing window of the stock HTC messaging app in landscape and hardware keyboard out, try to use the trackpad to go up/down and it won't actually go up to the conversation. so why would light hitting it do that if it's not a possibility manually?
mine does this as well, i've found one particular spot in my house where it happens. pretty sure it's light hitting the pad at the right (or wrong) angles as well.

How could I disable hardware keyboard while it's open and use software keyboard?

I know some of you might think this is a stupid question. I would like to use any on screen keyboard while the hardware keyboard is open and disable hw kb until I want to use it. Let me see if I can explain this to you why.
I am starting to like typing in landscape mode with on screen keyboard. I am getting pretty good at it and definitely think my speed is faster that way than a hardware keyboard. Have any of you tried typing in landscape for any extended length of time? I don't know about you but my fingers really start cramping and hurting because I have to hold the phone with the rest of my hands and fingers while typing with my thumbs. When the hw kb is open, this could give me more area to hold the phone a little more comfortably while using a fast software keyboard. My thumbs wouldn't be at funky downward angles to hit the keys, they would be extended straighter and upwards and might be less prone to getting crampt up and carpel tunnel.
Am I crazy to think this might be useful? Has anyone heard of it being done or an app or hack that could achieve what I'm trying to do?
I do understand where you are coming from, having big hands and fingers can suck sometimes, but I don't think its possible. I've tried to see if I could pull up the virtual landscape keyboard with the hw one open but no luck.

Why'd you get the Shift and not the Evo if you would prefer an on-screen keyboard?

I'm not complaining or whining, I'm just asking for help with something that I might like to do.
to answer your question, yes, it is possible.
i just tested this on skyfire, ebuddy, and gmail. if you simply leave the keyboard in, aka don't slide the screen, and rotate the device, the screen will turn and whatever app you are using will also turn (if it supports it). then just click in the text box you want to type in again, and the onscreen keyboard will come up. I'm using better keyboard atm, so didn't test it with the HTC or any others. but i'm fairly positive that if it works with that one, it'll throw up whichever keyboard you are currently using in the same situation.

I think you missed what he was trying to say. he was asking if it's possible to use the on-screen keyboard with the physical keyboard open.
OP, here's an android tip (it works with any android phone): if you hold down the menu button with your cursor in a text field, it forces the on-screen keyboard to come up. You could try selecting a text field, then holding down the menu button.

I know about what you are explaining, that's normal usage. What I'm interested in is using the open physical keyboard as additional area to hold the phone with while in landscape and using the on screen keyboard. I'm thinking there needs to be something to trick the phone into thinking the keyboard drawer is closed when it's actually open.
It seems, as usual, that I am coming up with lame brain ideas and haven't a clue as how to making them happen. I emailed one keyboard dev a few days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. I guess I could shoot out emails to all the devs of the keyboards I have bought and see if I get a response.

I just tried that with the drawer open and it is not working. I tried switching to the stock keyboard too and still nothing. Thanks for the suggestion.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a 1-year warranty on manufacturing defects, regardless of insurance standing or the 30-day return policy? Certainly sounds like a manufacturing defect to me, unless it's broken from misuse
this isnt the place for talking about warantee issues. start a different thread. this is about answering the question in this thread.
have you tried any other keyboards from the market or like the swype beta or anything? idk if it would make a difference. i doubt you can disable it while its open. if you want to use the soft keyboard close the phone? Its probably best practice to keep the phone closed when you arent using the hardware keyboard anyways?

and I was pointing out a potential fix for someone with an issue in this thread, try to keep up.
Looks like smart keyboard pro has that feature. Its buried in the advanced menu.
Yes sir it is I just downloaded the trial to give it a shot one thing I notice is when you open the keyboard on the home screen they keyboard pops up over all your icons I'm gonna play with the settings somemore and see what I can do about it
*EDIT* if you are on a text box and hit home the keyboard don't open over home screen but if you just open the phone to put it into landscape on the homescreen they beyboard will pop up just hit the search button then back and you have your whole home screen

Delete Key Issues

Anyone else have issues with their Delete key? It seems I have to hit it twice to get it moving. I can type very fast and smooth with easy button presses, but the delete key seems to be a PITA.

Don't have any problems here with any keys (that I've found so far). Is it a case of since its a little more difficult to get to (upper right) corner that you don't realize you are not pressing it the same way as the other keys?
Just a thought.
No problems here
Never had that problem.

Hard keyboard or virtual? I haven't had that issue with either. Off topic, but my spacebar on the landscape virtual is a pain, I always end up hitting the b or v.

If you're not using a custom keyboard, have you tried calibrating your keyboard at:
Menu-->Settings-->Language&Keyboard-->Touch Input-->Text Input-->Calibration Tool
(Interestingly enough, Calibration tool is only available if you hold the phone in Portrait and not in Landscape)
Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. I'm going to try it again. Coming from the Hero and having the tight sliding due to my case, its going to be hard to get used a the hard keyboard again. It is weird that the calibration only works in portrait or w/e you call it, the Hero was the same way.

i think it might be that I'm just not hittin it right. I was typing last night and when I hit delete it worked right away. I just might be hittin it off center.

[Q] Weird Texting Issue

Has anyone had this issue with your shift? When I am texting out of nowhere my phone stops inputting text and I notice that my screen is at the top of the whole conversation it is really annoying because if there is 200 to 300 texts there i have to scroll all the way to the bottom to continue texting again. Just wondering if anyone else had this problem or not.
Just one more reason I can't wait to get rooted again?
Are you using the swype keyboard as the virtual keyboard by any chance? My shift did this as well and I couldn't find an answer anywhere. By chance I changed the input to the default HTC one and magically my hardware keyboard stopped making the messaging apps from suddenly making the screen go to the top. Hope this helps you!

Google Keyboard (Gboard) not behaving nicely sometimes

Anybody getting weird behaviour from Gboard? Like not registering glides or some keypresses? Sometimes even registering extra keypresses? It feels like my S8+'s touchscreen sensitivity goes haywire sometimes when trying to type
I don't use glide but everything else works just fine.

Some times it doesn't display the suggested words at the top. Just today when replying to a text and I press on the text area, the messages exits rather than bringing up the keyboard. Not sure if that's gboard or not. Bearable for now. I imagine it will get better rather than worse.
