You need to remove the battery, plug in usb, hold both volume buttons, then reinstall battery. That will force d/l mode. Then odin

Lol, I never understand these stories. "So I was using ODIN and everything was going great until I accidentally threw my phone across the room into a bucket of water, now what" Sorry this is just the most third type of post I've just read, yes you must try that procedure above to fix.

Something similar has happend to me. I have a blackberry in addition to my android device, and I was using application loader to install a new OS. My dog decided to run after a fly. Runs past me, catches his leg on the USB cord. Yanks the usb cord right out the computer and sends the Blackberry flying in the middle of flashing a new os!
So i'm sure this happens more than you would think!
Check around for guides on how to fix that. Search function's there and all. But there's a link in my signature.

I went to install the new samsung update. I've used odin and never had many problems, but it didnt start the donwload, i removed the usb cable (while on the download screen on phone). Unplugged again, unresponsive to odin. Turned off phone and now when i turn it back on I get icon of PHONE ! Computer
I can't search for anything, because it's saaying the search is down for 5 minutes (10 minutes ago) . I know there is info on here for this but can someone tell me or point me where the correct link is so i dont mess up the phone.
THANKS!!

I took out battery, phone is off, plugged in usb cable and I get the icon of the phone with exclamation point and PC. I never was able to get to download mode without using adb reboot download, but obviously now, i cant get to adb because it doesnt find the device anymore.
Don't worry about the icon, just do the same procedure and it'll do on download mode
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
But you can't because it doesnt see the device... im freaking out...
after you pull the battery and put back in, hold down the up and down volume buttons, THEN plug the usb in WHILE holding the volume buttons.
just imaging the icon with the phone and the pc is the battery icon... and do the same procedure... you will get to download mode again. and restart your computer and try.
That happened to me and just replaced my phone with tmobile and got a brand new one, yrust me nothing works when is in that image I gave up and called tmobile.

I've had my phone with this icon numerous times and had no problems getting back to download mode, like the previous poster said, just pretend its the battery icon and repeat the steps

Nope, this is not working, did this 10 times. I put battery back in, hold up.down then plug usb while holding, the screen keeps coming back the same. But like i keep saying, i was NEVER able to get to download mode before. Must have tried it 200 times.
take the battery out, put it back in. Plug the device and when you see the icon, hold vol up and down and power, as soon as the screen goes black remove your finger from the power button, but KEEP holding the vol. buttons until the dl screen comes on
Batt and cable off, plug cable hold buttons then battery in.
Remember u broke it u bought it, but ofcourse tmo will have to fix something U broke.

oh well, no matter what i try , it keeps going back to same screen. This is freaking frustrating. In my reading on here, there seems to be some people that are not able to get into donwload mode from the buttons. If this is the case for me, do i have ANY other options then bringing it to be Tmobile. I have only had the phone for 3 weeks, but i really want to get it resolved without bringing it in, i have lots of stuff on phone (i have backup off the phone).
Try all the steps here if you haven't already:

You know that they can probably fix it and that its not really BRICKED then when they find out that he had Superuser.apk, they'll add a fee to his bill and that would be even worse.
I thought I'd mess with Odin today. But little did I know today was the day my Vibrant would die.
My Vibrant is the lucky LARGE nand hardware locked ones.
Odin failed now I can't do anything to the phone, can't download mode, can't recovery, can't get computer to recognize the device so I can't do any adb commands. Is there any hope?

That's your only hope.
I can't solder so I bought the part.
If I take battery out
Plug usb in
hold volume up volume down power and home button (it's a real button like internation)
the phone ! computer icon flashes
You can odin from that screen if your comp can recognize the phone. You will lose your internal info but just re-flash.
In the case you get up & running you should apply the .SBL fix that is flaring around. This will get rid of the "hardware lock"

Computer doesn't recognize phone, and the funny thing is I already applied the SBL "fix" and it didn't work, also didn't brick.
That sux... GL!
Start odin up and pull the battery.then put it back in just holding the volume up and down buttons then plug in the usb cord see what that does

Seriously.
Alright, so my Continuum has been bricked for some time now. I was attempting to root and install a custom recovery through ODIN but got messed up somewhere along the way and in effect bricked my Continuum. It wont turn on, wont indicate charging and wont do anything else I try to get it to do. I'm reaching out to you Continuum experts who know something about ODIN or un-bricking so I can potentially bring my Continuum back to life. I loved that phone, but my stupidity ruined the fun. I'm thinking that if there's some way to re-enter download mode that might help. Thanks everyone!
There is a sticky thread about bricking your phone. It says enter the irc and wait. There isn't enough info given to decipher the problem. And if you can't get into download mode, I don't think you really can't do much but take it in to Verizon. But there may be hope.... in the irc.

To get into download mode, try pulling your battery and holding the power button for 20 seconds. Then put the battery back in and try download.

Sorry, what are the button combinations for download mode? I should also mention that I have absolutely no way of knowing whether or not my battery is even charged anymore because they phone does nothing when I plug it into the charger. In fact, my computer doesn't even recognize when I plug the phone in.
Alright, so I guess the first answer to my question is actually getting into download mode. I'm attempting to charge the battery as we speak.

If the volume down/ power button combo doesn't work to get into download mode, try this: unplug the usb cable, take the battery out, then hold the volume down button and plug the usb cable into the phone. That should bring you into download mode.

Not sure if you're still looking to fix this, but try to make a download mode jig, or buy one, like they use on the GSM variants of the SGS phone lineup. It works on the CDMA models, but usually isn't needed. If that doesn't work, you may be able to try the Fascinate un-brickable mod, though I don't know if that will work or not.
Hi All! I apologize for making a question just joining the site but I am desperate! My S4 turned off randomly last night and won't turn on/charge. The weird part is that if I disconnect and reconnect the battery, the phone tries to turn on, show me initial screen and then go black. Keep in mind I did NOT touch the power button! The device, by itself, Turns on and then goes black. If I leave VolDown button pressed, and NOTHING else while connecting the battery, I get to Download Mode automatically, but after a couple seconds, the screen goes black again. I am desperate, my local Sprint stores haven't opened yet, so I can't go to them. Any and all help is Greatly appreciated!!
(P.S. Any way to recover data like pics etc from the phone?)
Sounds like your power button is stuck. You can try to pry it out to make your phone usable, but as long as you're under warranty Sprint should fix it rather easily.

+1 on this. if you gave a safety pin, rin it around the edge od the power button to see if you can unstick it.
power button stuck...yea use a needle to ory it out then clean around it... all else fails, id try a new batt.. OR if your trying to charge off a laptop or a weak 500ma charger., by nature alot of.times the phone wants to boot whenever it detects a charger connected, but in your case the batt is to dead to stay on and the charge is too weak to.keep it on.. therefore simulating a " bootloop "... if this is the case, you need to find a 1ma or 2ma charger...
but.id try the checking the button first.

Thanks for the reply guys! I had some time to head over to my local Sprint shop, because insurance. Technician said it's a known issue, and that changing some internals (audio port, charge port etc) fixes the problem. Although this was not the case for me, I'l be getting a replacement on Tuesday. That being said, I would still like to get my info off of this phone. Any suggestions on the workaround of that power button? Thanks in advance!

As for getting your stuff off, sounds like Sprint might be the only way. Maybe you could mount your S4 to a computer and see if it will let you get stuff off.

Tried mounting, phone won't turn on so it wouldn't get recognized by the computer. I'll try prying out the power button to see if that fixes anything...
so my sister has an att galaxy s4. And she started having this problem with it only booting into download or factory mode. So after two days of struggling I finally got it to boot normally only after doing the download mode button combo, and selecting for it to cancel the boot. Then it kept on doing it after every boot so I thought i would flash the stock firmware from odin. This did not work as well and I kept getting "fail". Now I did an over the air update and as far as I can tell, it is still having the issue. Also I cannot get into recovery with the button combo to delete the cache. Thanks for the support and any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not know where to go with this.

Also should mention that she dropped it in soup. I think it might be the charging port because the 'docked' notification also appears while on and not docked. Also phone when powered down automatically powers up back into download mode and the onto way to get it back is to do the button combo.

Sounds to me your volume down button is hanging. When you press volume down and power it up it goes into safe mode. Also you need volume down buton to boot into download mode.
Screw it open and clean it.
Clean your usb port with 99% pure alcohol and a toothbrush. That always works for me when I pour beer into my usb port.

Dear Mr. @Lennyz1988 ,
Best reply i seen today , hahaha , i cant imagine you pouring beer in you usb port....
BTW is not redundant using alcohol to clean alcohol??
Sorry I should have mentioned all of the specifics. I would consider myself pretty darn good with this stuff. It's just this one kinda stumped me for a few hours and I was already thinking about cleaning it. And yes my sister already put it in rice so I'm thinking that something got crossed or there was a small short cause it thinks it's connected to a factory cable when it most certainly isn't.
