I am fairly new to android and have rooted my phone (with s-off). I was wondering If anyone could take a few and help me on flashing and wiping roms. I have clockwork flashed, and I have made a copy of my current rom. I have also downloaded iced glacier 1.01, now I just need direction on how to "wipe" the old, and "flash" the new.
Thanks in advance!
Use rom manager buy/dl it from the market

-use rom manager to help you boot into recovery
-Make a nandroid backup and store it somewhere safe,
-Wipe everything using the wipe menu
-Flash custom rom from sd
-Choose rom zip and reboot when installed
Simple process that gets easier and more embedded as time goes on
-Cheers
Make a backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Install zip from sdcard
Click zip file and click yes install
Process should take some time
Click reboot system
Note: if phone didn't reboot or turn back on, do a battery pull. Should solve problem

No seriously, I have seen this asked several times so I thought I'd start a post on what you do when you flash a rom.
My setup is Clockwork 2.6.0.1, rom manager 3.0.0.7 and I mostly run CM7. This is my process for flashing nightlies:
1. Boot to recovery
2. Backup
3. Wipe Cache
4. Wipe Dalvik
5. Wipe Battery Stats
6. Reboot
7. Run Rom Manager
8. Rename backup
9. Download CM7 nightly and check the Gapps check box
10. Let Rom Manager do it's thing
11. Enjoy CM7 goodness.
If I'm flashing to something other than CM, it goes something like this:
1. Boot to recovery
2. Backup
3. Clear data and factory reset
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik
6. Wipe Battery Stats
7. Installl rom from zip on SD
8. Reboot
I usually dont have any issues, ocassionally I get stuck at the HTC white screen but a battery pull and reboot clears it up.
So how do you flash?
Charge 100%
Backup Apps with important data with Titanium Backup.
Backup the rest with Astro File Manager
Reboot to Recovery
Nandroid Backup
Wipe Everything
Flash Rom
Flash Theme (If I'm using one)
Boot Up
Sync and set preferences
Restore Apps
No backups. Just wipe with Ra 2.3 and flash away.

Pretty much the same here, except after 7 I flash Calkulin's format all zip. I had some problems with clockwork not wiping everything a while back and now I'm paranoid about it.
*Take a fresh 100% battery off the external charger (my equivalent to opening a six pack)
*Backup contacts using v cards
*backup apps using titanium backup and app brain
*backup bookmarks using bookmarks to sd
*wipe dalvik, cache partition, and wipe data
*flash rom, boot it up then flash other stuff
*then retrieve v card with contacts back ana start connecting them to their facebook again
*restore apps with titanium and leave out apps idgaf about
*enjoy, I should have drank to myn's rls 5 lol

Currently using HTC HD 2 Andriod rom running on nand,
Assuming Ive installed andriod with clockwork recovery and etc, and I would like change my ROM to other versions, how can I do it?
Do I need to delete the current Andriod Rom? and how do i do it? thanks!
Go to Clockwork Recovery.
If your coming from another rom (Miui -> CM7, Sense -> Stock, or any of that matter), wipe cache recommended 3 times, advanced -> Dalvik Cache. When your coming from another rom, it's highly recommended to wipe data too.
If your coming from the same rom (CM7 -> CM7) and want to KEEP your data, then simply wiping cache and Dalvik cache is enough.
To flash a new rom, choose "apply zip from sd card" -> "choose zip from sd card" and simply select the .zip file.
You don't need to delete or anything, Clockwork should overwrite it and your cache should be cleared.
I always do a Nandroid backup using backup and restore in CWM and then do a full wipe of all the partitions data, system, boot, cache, and sd-ext. Then I go to advanced in CWM and woe my Delvik cache, then flash my ROM using install zip from sdcard. When my ROM is done I go to backup and restore and select advanced restore and restore my data and my cache from my Nandroid backup then boot my HD2. I never once have had a issue with any new ROM or my information and settings not being there. You do not want to restore boot or system cause boot is the kernel of your ROM and system is the ROM itself. So if you restored them you still havecthe same ROM.
check ROM thread / instructions, there are a lot of information.
sometimes you need to follow exactly as it says.
cheers

I recommend running a Task 29cand then reflashing MAGLDR and then flash CWM using USB Flasher in MAGLDR then flash your ROM using CWM. Make sure to reformat your SD card before booting up your Android. Easiest way of doing this is to stick your SD card in a adaptor and then into a digital camera then format it with the camera as this will take the funky format that WP7 does to it off. Then use a USB card reader to format it using Fat 32.
just flash android using instructions from your ROM thread.
cheers

You can't just install a ROM without wiping data because it is like you would install windows 7 over windows 7 and expecting to have same registers and programs. In order to have a clean install you need to wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. Then you can install you ROM.zip and only after then you can install your gapps is a good package to have dependib on the rom . You can partition an SD card and put your apps there then install them back once your ROM is flashed. The best is to make a .zip with all your apps with an install script. This way you can flash as often as you like without having to in steam each apps one by one and lose a lot of time.
Many threads are open for various model. Always make sure that you see your model is compatible because you cab brick your phone and its not funny so make an Nandroid backup recovery in CWM because you flash anything.
Type in your model in search and you will most likely find a step by step guide with all the files you need.

OK,Thanks.I will follow your suggest!
Hello,
Today I wanted to factory reset my phone so I booted into CWM Recovery and did a factory reset. Strangely when I rebooted all my apps, settings and other stuff where still there. Then I tried to do a factory reset via the settings menu but it still didn't work. I figured I should just flash the rom and gapps again but this didn't work either. Also when I tried wiping dalvik it just went back to the advanced menu in CWM without wiping dalvik. I run CM9-NIGHTLY-121118-Defy+ with gapps-ics-20120429-signed on my Defy+, Bootmenu version is v2.1 and the CWM Version is v5.7.0- jordan.
I hope someone can help me figure out how to fix it.
Thanks!
You can try the format filesystem option from the boot menu. Convert to ext3 and then back to ext 4. If this doesn't work then try a wipe from the stock recovery. And lastly, try an sbf flash

Ah thanks, yesterday I figured it would just be easier to flash a stock sbf then go trough all the hassle of finding a solution.
Thanks anyways!
Using these would've been an easier solution, though - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818520
Hi All, I can flash a rom using RSD lite and then root using super one Click, then install 2nd init. I can access the custom recovery to install new roms. I do a factory reset/wipe cache, wipe dalvik and then install a rom. After install, I do a second wipe then reboot. Everything I try goes to a bootloop or does not work. When I am in a newer recovery, I wipe the /system folder too before installing a rom. and still no dice.
Any Ideas.

Use defy full wiper or aroma wiper to wipe everything and then flash. Then immediately reboot after flashing, no wipes required.

I tried the aroma wiper but still does not boot properly Thanks for the link though, I will try to use it more and see what if I can get something to stick.

Don't wipe after installing the ROM.
