I'm trying to update to the DK17 modem using Odin, but everytime I connect my phone in download mode, my laptop says I'm missing a Gadget Serial driver and will not connect via Odin.
I've read other threads about this problem and they all suggest downloading the PC Studio package from Samsung which I have and it still doesn't help. I'm running Windows 7 x64. Help please?!
do it on xp machine I was never able to accomplish anything with win7-64

When I plug in my Vibrant to my computer, nothing happens. My phone says it's charging, but nothing else happens. No dialog that tells me that the USB is connected on the phone, or anything on the computer either that I have inserted a new flash drive. Has this happened to anyone before? Any suggestions?
After it's plugged in via usb did you mount it?

I've searched all over the posts and google and have yet to find a solution. I am a MAC user and trying to restore fascinate. I am stuck at Samsung screen. I can get into Clockwork Mod Voodoo.
When i did my last backup I never enabled USB Debugging. I can not ./adb into device, nor can I use ODIN on friends PC. (No Device) Same result with Heimdal "Failed to detect Device" I would just like to get back to stock. Is there a step by step guide to recover similar to ODIN get you back to stock but for a MAC. Or since i never enabled Debug mode I should just use my warranty?
When you tried Odin, did you have the battery out and put the phone in download mode?

Yes, I did see the Yellow triangle Droid character w/ shovel
So, battery out and in download mode, Odin doesn't recognize? Hm

I feel because I never enabled debug mode originally.
Does it recognize the phone at all? Maybe the drivers need to be updated

Morning, I'm attempting to resolve the same issue. I have the "Yellow Shovel" Andy but I can't get Odin to recognize the device.
The device was fine and Odin was working last night, however I do believe I did something ridiculous last night. I tried flashing my phone with a Nexus S rom and succeeded. HOWEVER, the only buttons that are recognized are the "Home" and "Menu" soft keys.
I can boot into the 2.3 Nexus S rom but I can't get the hardware to recognize anymore.
UPDATE: I managed to get the USB to recognize. I'm not completely sure how, it just started recognizing it after fidgeting with the cable. I'm not flashing it back to stock using ODIN and the following post.

UPDATE: The link above worked. I recommend using the stock USB cable that comes with the phone. Now that it's back.. I'm curious to know what I would have to change for 2.3 to work.. hm..

UPDATE: My buddy brought over his PC and got it restored! looking good now. We just updated the samsung drivers. restarted the machine. And it worked. Will update w/ the file he used. Thanks for the help and feedback.
I have tried everything. I would like to wipe the phone so I want to use the samsung or odin software to install. I have looked at all the other galaxy forums and others have had the same trouble. Does this just happen to a few users, or phones? I have tried different ports, computers, drivers and I'm at a loss. If I have the phone in regular mode like when I use pdanet, odin will see it, but as soon as I take the battery out and put it in download mode.....i get that damn error like I don't have a driver. Has anyone been able to work through this with the Epic?
Are you saying you can't use odin in dl mode?

Yes that's right. Sorry if it didn't make sense. I'm so frustrated right now.
Are you putting the phone into download mode and have Odin running before connecting the phone to the computer?
I ask only because I know if you have the phone plugged in before doing those things, it won't see the phone at all.

I have tried it several ways. It doesn't matter. Once the phone is in download mode, the computer doesn't see it or doesn't recognize that I have a driver installed. It is like once in download mode, something internal in the phone changes in order for the driver to not function right.
Could you fix this problem? I have the same issue
Is this is the first time you've put it in dl mode? did you let the drivers install?
The computer doesn't use drivers when the phone is in download mode.... it just recognizes that there's some kind of phone connected and seeks out which com port its in then just transfers files to the device through a universal program like odin or qpst... I know this is a few months late but I hope it pays forward in some way if people will ever learn to search first...

I've had this same problem. But the simple solution is to go buy or use someones blackberry torch charger or the charger that's similar to it. Fixes the problem 99.9% of the time.

I don't believe that is true because Odin only recognizes my phone in the USB port I used to originally install the drivers. If I reinstall the Samsung drivers in another port, then Odin recognizes it there as well.
It does require drivers, its a diff subset of drivers than normal mode, just modem and composite but it does require drivers...

I can use download mode on any one of my com ports through the oem cord and never had to reinstall a driver and I'm on vista of all os's

its not possible to use odin without installing the samsung modem driver... so either somehow it got installed without your knowledge or you forgot...
Heh, I remember all the work I had to go through with getting the correct drivers. What I had to do was go in my Device Manager, click on my phone, then hit update drivers and change the drivers to the Samsung one. I had to do this like 4 times, and sometimes the update takes a while. After that, you should be good.
