obscure or unique uses for your evo - EVO 4G General

i bet msot people with smart phones usualy just text and facebook with their devices. i was thinking about what all i use my current device for and thought that if i share then maybe someone will say hey.... i didn't know we could do that, also i was hoping some would follow suite and add to the thread in hopes that i might learn a few tricks too.
i don't think i have anything unique but i thought i'd list what i use my evo for, there will be some obvious things but maybe if others contribute there will be something unique.
my list of things i use all the time:
phone, speaker phone, blue tooth headset
text mms
5 email accounts ran though my mail client
clock
manage contacts via people
manage appointments lots of different ways

i think that there is nothing special in my list for xda users but when compared to most smart phone users i would say that the things that i do that most everyday average folks might find cutting edge would be
constantly browsing the web, i do a lot of research and reading on line
remote login
playing sweet games
pdf reading
watching youtube
playing with my camera
navigation
ebaying
using my phone's sd card as removable storage

I used my Heroc to hang cabinets right after I got it last October - level and stud finder, worked well.

This app is pretty obsqure/unique lmao
its got 4 stars.

I bought it to root it.

I rarely text, and don't have the slightest interest in Facebook, nor do I know anyone that does. I use mine to keep all my data organized as I move from project to project, including syncing things with my laptop through Dropbox and Evernote. I take multiple videos and photos per day, emailing them to decision makers, and getting quick responses. It's a tool, and a great one, and not a toy, to me.

While most people probably don't do this...I use my evo as a phone. Betcha didn't know it could do THAT!!!

Lol, I use t as a phone the least of all the potential uses.

I use an app called Endomondo as a gps tracker for different sports. It will track time, distance, approx. calorie burn and show your "track" on the map. Great for mountain biking, trail running etc.

I use dropbox to keep files up to date from laptop, phone, and work computer...wonder if I could do this with Google Docs instead...
I use it to watch 'movies' while i take care of 'stuff'. =D
On average i use 5-15 minutes of talk time a month and 4-5gb of data. Lots of music listening, lots of web browsing at work to pass the time.
Tethering laptop and work computer with it so the 'big guy' can't see what i'm doing.
I also bought it knowing it'd be rooted within a week of getting it, haha.

Just tried it out but using it as a remote desktop. Really neat!

try out the johnson bubble level, it's better by leaps and bounds than any other level; properly calibrate that bad boy, and you may actually be approaching a good level (not the same, agreed, but not terrible).

problem with a level on your phone is it's only as accurate as your phone is long.
right tool for the job i always say! but hey, it's my trade i'm going to be a bit partial.
out of curiosity i will check out that particular app, but if anyone ever saw me trying to level something with my phone on the job i'd likely receive 2 checks that week.

If the digital scales app worked i would use it like crazy. Hehe ;-)

I was recently in a minor parking lot accident which, I'm sorry to say, was my fault. The short version is I put a little dent in a hubcap but I didn't even touch the bodywork or the rim. We were right across the street from a Chevy dealership and I offered to go there and buy him a new hubcap right then, but he wanted to go the insurance route. No biggie, but the way he was acting made me suspicious.
So we swapped information and I shot some discrete video with my Evo. Three days later he sent my insurance company an estimate for thousands of dollars to fix extensive body damage and repaint his truck.
Now the guy has a date in court for filing a false insurance claim and as far as I'm concerned my Evo paid for itself in that one brief moment.
Is that "obscure or unique" enough for you?
Pete

Yeah that's pretty sweet.

G2 Q&A

Anyone have some questions about it they'd like answered?
Is the trackpad illuminated? Trackpad isn't, but around it glows white every 30 seconds or so. On incoming calls it flashes.
How's the picture and video quality? Nothing amazing but I am not disappointed. The camera app is very responsive. Low-light pictures aren't that great and there are some obvious artifacts, but that's to be expected. Colors seem washed out in low-light, and slightly over-saturated and "blown out" in decent light. The flash is pretty bright and works well. Video is not bad at all but being a spoiled video encoder for the best video tracker on the internet, it's not as good as I'd like -- not that I expected it to be from a phone. On complex/action scenes it seems a little bitrate-starved. May be a limitation of the 3gp container or hardware -- I'm not sure.
720p Video:
Outdoors - Fairly impressed with how smooth it is. Had to cut the video short to avoid showing pooping action to the world (don't worry, entirely safe for work ).
Indoors - Same color issues as the camera, but really cannot complain. It's friggin' 720p video recording in my pocket.
How big is it? Slightly thinner than the G1. I honestly think it's a very reasonable size. It doesn't feel as thick since it's also wider. I don't see how anyone can complain about the size, but I'm also someone who's grown up using HTC QWERTY phones.
How fast is it? WOW. Of course, this is based on my use of the G1, but damn is it fast! Everything is as smooth as could be on Android. Not iPhone smooth, but it's more of an OS thing. I will report back with benchmarks after I wipe the G1 and install the latest CyanogenMod6 so it's a fair(ish) comparison.
How is the screen? Very nice. Crisp, bright, and the color is great. The screen feels a bit more plastic-ish than some other phones, but I'm not complaining. Doesn't feel cheap and isn't anything to worry about, honestly. It does attract fingerprints and smudges.
Is Swype pre-installed? Yes!
What else is pre-installed? Amazon MP3, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Car Home, Clock, Contacts, Earth, Email, Facebook, Finance, Gallery, Gmail, Goggles, Google Search, Google Sky Map, Google Translate, Latitude, Listen, Maps, Market, Messaging, Music, My Account, My Device, My Tracks, Navigation, News and Weather, Phone, Photobucket, Places, Quick Keys, Quickoffice, Settings, Setup, Shopper, Talk, TTS Service Extended, Twitter, Voice, Voice Dialer, Voice Search, web2go, YouTube. I understand a lot of these are just basic Android apps, but that's the entire app tray. There is also Adobe Flash Player 10.1.
Is Adobe Flash installed? Yes.
How much memory? It comes with the 8gb MicroSD already installed, and reports 7.39GB free. Internal phone storage reports 1.23GB free.
How's the keyboard? Feels very nice and tactile, just the way your mother likes it. Will take me a little while to get used to after using the G1 for 2 years. Not only because it's a row shorter, but because a lot is moved relative to its location on the G1. For example: I keep pressing .com when I mean to press 'a'
How are voice actions? I honestly don't know if this is a new feature, but it is pretty darn nice. I can see it coming in handy when driving, assuming it doesn't pick up too much noise (my car isn't quiet ).
How loud is the speaker? Doesn't seem very loud. It's loud enough for most situations, but I surely wouldn't try using it in a noisy location. It sounds equally loud as the G1.
How is the signal strength? Honestly, seems about the same as my G1. I get full strength everywhere I had full strength, and have no signal in the same places (in my house, and in a huge building at work...).
How responsive? Very responsive. I've not noticed any lag no matter how many apps I have running. Pinch-zoom is always smooth. Scrolling long lists (200+ contacts, for example) is smooth. Anyone coming from a G1 will be extremely happy.
Battery life? Very good so far, but I haven't done a complete discharge cycle yet to make the meter more accurate. Compared to my G1, it's significantly better, but my G1 is 2 years old and the batteries do lose capacity. So far, I'm not worried at all. I'll report back after a couple days of use, although by then you all should have one
Is there a mystery hole (lol) for noise canceling by the speakerphone grill? I don't see any mystery hole. If the angle of light is just right, you can barely see where the sensors are to the left of the speaker grill. Maybe the earlier pictures were prototypes and the hole was for the sensors.
Can I hold the phone how I want? Heck yes. I'm sure if you do some funky death grip solely to prove you can hold it and lose some signal like some other companies like to do, that you could find a way to hold it and lose some signal. Normal use you will not have any issues and I can't find a way to hold it that would make it lose signal.
Does the LED change colors when charged? Yes, amber when charging and green when fully charged.
Does it come with a case? No. Only comes with a usb cable, headphones, and a usb wall charger.
Does the package require signature? Mine didn't. He walked to the door and handed me a padded envelope with the box in it and left.
Other notes:
- It will not update Google Goggles. Always says the update was unsuccessful.
- I don't understand the point of the "My Device" icon. It takes me to the same place as "My Account."
I think the biggest is the trackpad. Is there a light? And PS i hate u lol

I'm kicking it old school with the G1
I was one of those impatiently waiting for the preorder to start, and of course had it preordered the first day.
I will take pictures and record some HD video, indoors and out. Fortunately the weather is nice today.
xile6 - not really sure what you're saying, but if I'm understanding you right I'll be putting the questions/answers at top to find them easily. This thread will only be around for a few hours anyway, since most others will get theirs tomorrow

Yes the track pad has a light around it. So far only one color. I have been using it for a day now. One issue is googles goggles won't update.... not really a big deal but that's one thing I've noticed. Coming from the Nexus its very similar so that's good. Size wise it is not that noticeably bigger but you can tell when you hold it. Swype comes stock. That's about all I have for now. Oh the slid mechanism feels pretty solid as well.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
what about any lag? how is the browser scrolling? pinch and zoom lag? how about flash content? i heard it is hardware accelerated for flash content... ummmm how about the stock launcher in general is it smooth? i don't know about everyone else but i'm commin from a g1 and these were big issues with me. well minus the flash we had none lol. Also how about multi-tasking? music playing browsing at the same time.. need info pleeez lol
P.S. any cool new google app programs that we don't already have in froyo that you can notice? any issues with facebook or sync?

Is google starting to worry about WP8?

Yesterday i discovered that metrotube and other apps that are used to access videos in youtube are not working anymore, the only ones that actually work are the ones that link you to the video throught the browser; the reason is because the google guys forbid the access to youtube videos from apps using the WP8 platform. Normally such kind of dirty tricks are used when you start to worry about something........opinions?
As far as I know, all WP apps use some sort of built-in browser to get to youtube. the Youtube app by itself is just a shortcut to m.youtube.com in IE.
And yes, google is scared and is doing every dirty trick at their disposal to hinder WP. The dead silence from MS is more threatening...however. I suppose MS will strike back soon.

I dont think so. But as far as I know google didnt develop any apps for wp8, youtube and google search... I think they were developed by ms, then when you use youtube, actually it opens IE and navigates to m.youtube.com. Anyway, WP8 really threatens IOS , http://360dmobile.com/winphone-8-already-threatening-iphone-in-southern-europe/
Google has said that they have no interest in developing for Windows 8 period...(including WP8)...I have an Android phone on standby, but I think Microsoft should charge Google more for the patents that they use, or not grant any more.
Sent from the fetal position using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Ios was never a worthy threat to droid but wp8 seems to be worrying Google a lot.
I've read that the whole YouTube fiasco is due to some changes in platform code that Google incorporated without any early notice ! Now devs might have to push out updates to their apps to get back streaming online

Pfff windows phone? A threat to Google? Keep dreaming...as of now Microsoft is even making more Money out of android not talk about not having faith in it's own platform
Inviato dal mio ST26i con Tapatalk 2
I don't think Google are worried, They are just having a hissy fit at having to pay out for patents from MS and being an ass in the process, When you consider the percentage of Marketshare Android has at this moment they are laughing,
Microsoft are making money whatever way it goes that is maybe why they don't seem that worried about the OS.
Googles YouTube APIs never did allow for access to actual video data aside from the low-res 240p stream. At least the official APIs don't. That's why Apps like MetroTube are using other ways to gain access to that data. But so do sites like youtube2mp3 which allow people to e.g. download music from YouTube videos. Google is actually under pressure to stop that way of "music file sharing" and thats why there a) is no official API for it and b) they change it from time to time to break those sites.
In the end this is more likely directed against those websites than it is against WP8.
Google is worried about Microsoft but in that case I believe more about Windows 8 than WP8. There are already a lot more Windows 8 devices out there than there are Windows Phones. That's most likely why they are cutting EAS support from GMail. But in this case I actually don't believe it was about WP8.

Ehm..the first part of your comment made sense but regarding the fact that google is worried...i doubt, that a growing number of Windows 8 devices may bea a threat for them...on the other Side IF WP and W8 devices would gain market share, well then Google would develop apps for the platform...

They can prevent the growing of the platform by NOT developing apps for said platform.
Why should they develop and spend tons of money For something that has a slow growing curve as WP

It is not much of an effort really. And it pays off over time. It is not as if microsoft won't pay em.
Google isn't worried about Microsoft. The more OSs Microsoft sells that means more people can go to Google.com and use Google services and click those advertisements.
When WP and W8 gain market share you better believe there will be Google apps.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If random people can make apps for Windows Phone that's far superior and functional than half assed efforts from Google, you know that Google's just being a **** to Microsoft. Google could just make these apps and push their own ads on the bloody apps and get all the ROI they need.

When you have moments of extreme paranoia and start getting a little panicky, just stop. Concentrate on your breathing and think of relaxing things, happy memories perhaps. If these fail, try mid level mental arithmetic.. for example, think to yourself 13 x 4, then work it out, then another.. etc..

USB OTG Connection Kit & Card Reader
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006DQWIKK/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
I'm not going to say that this is the best USB/Card reader on the market because its not. This is the best priced USB/Card reader for how much I and probably most will use it. Of course I would prefer the OEM products however I just don't see spending $30 on something I barely use.
The problem with this card reader is that it falls out of the 32 pin port pretty easily, which can be extremely frustrating. For god sakes it $5 though and for that price i will deal with it.

Anker® Ultra Slim Mini Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ONMDYE/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00
Once again price, price, price! This keyboard works great and I like the macbook look. It's small enough to fit just about anywhere your tablet will (its about 1/4 in. longer). Just as with the card reader, I'm not going to be using this all the time so the decent quality and price are the major factors here. Hey you might be replacing your laptop with your tablet so you may want a high end keyboard, but thats not what I'm doing here. That is not to take anything away from the quality of this product which is great.

OEM Samsung Case
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Elect...58364685&sr=8-5&keywords=note+10.1+case+white
I love this thing, I think mostly because its beautiful. Don't get me wrong it is functional but it looks good, really good! It has a magnet in the back for standing, however i find myself in positions that require it to stand with the leg out and pushing against my lap for a higher viewing angle. It is not completely protective of the tablet but it does do a pretty good job. I'm sure you can find lots of reviews and youtube videos showing you every angle of this case.
The problem people have with this case is that its hard to get at the moment. The prices have skyrocketed due to high demand. Well let me tell you how I went about acquiring one for 34 dollars. First of all you need to monitor prices (I use www.camelcamelcamel.com which monitors amazon prices for me and e-mails me when the price reaches a given goal). I waited till the case was down to $34 dollars, went to a local bestbuy and did a price match. The reason why I didn't just order from Amazon was it was out of stock and has been for a while now.

I ordered this along with a few other items from Samsung and have just recieved my package.... with a item I didn't order and no S Pen. Just my luck.
Anyways I'm pretty excited about this and if your planning on taking notes in class I think that this is a must. To be able to flip over the pen to erase on the fly is crucial to keeping up with those fast talking professors.

Evernote, in my opinion, is one of the best note-taking app across all OSs, and its free .
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.evernote&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ldmVybm90ZSJd
The Skitch app/addon for Evernote is also very useful because it allows you to add sketches/handwritten notes to your notes in Evernote. It is also free.

How do you NOT have LectureNotes as one of the best apps to have here?
Man.. It's probably my go-to app on this tablet!
He has mentioned why he does not have lecturenotes and has posted a link
It his personal preference if likes snote better then so be it
I second the lecture notes nomination.

I have handed you two votes of thanks Ryan, not because it gave me something new but because it was evidently clear you made effort in getting your information across....:good:
Great initiative!
My addition will be:
CloudOn att Play, an app that gives you almost the full MS office into your tablet for editing and creating various types of office documents on your cloud services like Dropbox/Drive/Box etc. And as far as I can tell even all the more unusual shortcuts like Ctrl+D for super or subscript works. It gives you a panel with the F and Ctrl keys at the top of your software keyboard, if you aren't using a hardware one that is.
Freeware!
Autodesk Sketchbook, preferably the paid version for tablets. Makes painting and drawing on the tablet an absolute joy since it's supporting pressure sensitivity. Costs a few bucks depending on your location.
Google translate, no further explanation needed.
UC Browser HD, the best browser I've tested so far! Supports alot of finger gestures that makes browsing an absolute joy. Freeware!
Touch Retouch, an app that removes unwanted photoboms almost automatically. Try the freeware version, it's even recommended in the Note 10.1 tips and tricks app from Samsung!
Edit: Of course, the XDA app even if it kinda goes without saying.
Simple Calendar, the best app for making calendar widgets imo!

Actually i personally like the original using s_note. Its been great but only thing is samsung did not impliment more options to their most importand application..
I would add Allshare Cast hub/dongle, Airdroid, Estrongs File explorer, Flipboard, Pinterest, Sketchbook Pro, Servers Ultimate to the list also.
^^ yes i second that..airdroid v2 is awesome and is a must!

I've installed LectureNotes and uninstalled and installed a couple times now and I just find myself using S Note again. It's just my preference, though I did mention it in my reviews because I know it has a large following.
I'm thinking of adding links for alternatives under all of the apps I listed. I do like that it has opened some discussion for apps that people prefer to the ones I've chosen to use which i think is great.
thanks for this,
note arrived to day so kind of info was why I stopped by :good:

Yes for the premium account but the free account gives you 60mb of photos/PDFs a month, and 250 notebooks, and 100,000 note cards. After you read my first sentence, you will think that it isn't a lot, I once did. But if you have 5 classes that would be 250(notebooks)/5(classes) = 50(notebooks per class). Thats seems like a lot. Then if 100,000(notecards total)/50(notebooks per class) = 2,000(notecards per notebook). I think that 2,000 notecards per notebook is a lot. I have about 4000 notecards, and still have 96000 left.
I don't know how the X-plore file manager doesn't get more love, dual-pane, drop box integration etc, I've tried them all and that's far and away the best IMO.

I partially agree. For a 10.1 tablet a dual-pane file manager is much better than a single pane one and it eases many operations.
Anyway I prefer Total Commander.
I've used for ages (say... 15 years (?) ) Total commander for Windows and only lately I found out there was an Android version too! It works great for me.

I figured since there is finally a place to post this, I will do so here. There is currently ongoing development for the Motorola MotoACTV smart watch. It began simply as a fitness watch, but has evolved with root, recovery, and roms into the best android watch available.
AND IT CAME OUT IN NOVEMBER OF 2011.
Interesting, yes? Let me get you some details from our current wiki (http://motoactv.wikispaces.com/home, started from the members right here on xda):
Code:
Hardware Specs:
Processor: 600MHz OMAP3 (3630) ARMv7 CPU supporting ARM architecture:
- thumb, vfp, vfpv3, edsp & neon. (overclockable to 1Ghz currently)
256MB of RAM and 8GB of NAND Flash Memory (Or 16 GB)
Wifi 802.11B/G/N
Bluetooth 4.0 (low-power mode)
ANT+ for connectivity to fitness sensors (heart rate, etc.)
FM Tuner (with Radio Data System for station & song identification)
PowerVR GPU
1.6" 220x176 capacitive multitouch LCD display
5 hardware buttons on the side:
- (Start, Music, Volume +, Volume -, Standby/Power)
1 additional capacitive button on the front for 'back button'.
Ambient light sensor
White charging and notification LEDs
Accelerometer
GPS

IF YOU DIDN'T LISTEN AND ARE NOW "LOW BATTERY" AND CANNOT FLASH:
First thing's first. It will probably still charge on the wall charger or a car charger. Try that first. But, if it won't...
(or if you're just an avid flasher,) I'd also recommend you get one of these to help you out of jams: Motorola Factory Cable. The one at that link from Team Black Hat is typically out of stock, but a search of the words "Motorola Factory Fastboot Cable" on eBay can get you one for between $5-8. This cable does not charge your unit and does not come with the MotoACTV.
Any questions? Please post below. And GET YOUR ACTV ON!

Update: just checked, they're going for $50-200 on ebay, lots are on there for sale.
Also, I will be updating the first post of this thread with any info/links that you guys need. We would love for more development of this device, since we've been doing it for months/years now.
Wow this seems great! Youtube and a browser. I recently bought myself the Sony Smart Watch, and I was not too impressed with the battery life time, how is this ones?
I also managed to ruin my SmartWatch, but I'm gonna get it refunded from the store I'll probably get this from eBay! Is there any bugs/problems I should know about from the Motorola watch?
I get mine tomorrow, and my only concern/question is how well this handles Bluetooth tethering. I use FoxFi and PDAnet with phone and tablet and i'm hoping I can use the same with the motoactv.

Not really. Battery life for me is around a week, sometimes more if I turn it off at night. I don't leave bluetooth or wifi on unless I need them though, and keep the brightness around half. I also turned off the shake-to-wake feature, as my watch was turning on when I was just walking around and using up battery life with the screen on lol.
But, for such a tiny battery, a week is pretty good in my opinion. Either way, you can just charge it every night if you're a heavy user. Keep in mind, this isn't like those other "smart watches" that only issue notifications, this is a full blown android device.

I know Nook Tether works on it for bluetooth tethering (internet pass through) I believe, but I'm not sure about the others. I've heard of PDAnet also, it might have been another that worked. I don't tether mine though, so I'm not sure.
The only thing I want different is the watch strap, and an XDA user is actually working on a better one right now. I can't wait!

I'm leading an auction on eBay at the moment. The "Buy Now" alternatives is too expensive with shipping to Norway :/
A week battery time sounds good to me I had to charge my SmartWatch every day, and that wasn't a problem.
How's the Firefox browser and YouTube app working on the watch?

Is there a way to keep the display on to use as a watch, without pushing a button? How much space does the OS use? Is Ebay prefer over Amazon for purchase?

It has shake to wake, where you shake your wrist and the display turns on. The os doesn't use much, maybe 200mb or something. I've got the 8 gig version and have plenty of space, even with roms. However, the space for installing apps is limited for the time being. I'm not sure, but there might be a way to partition the space on the device to get more app space.

I was unaware of the shake to awaken. I will go for the 8 Gb unit when I get the funds. More reading needs to be done to see which ROM may be the best for me. How hard is it for someone to generate a customized ROM without extensive training?

The hardest part is the script lol. Making one work is not easy. I've been working on roms for years now and this is the most finicky device I've ever seen.

Cool! Let us know what you think! Of course, the one you see won't be rooted or have a regular android launcher on it yet.
I have decided to buy one, preferably at less than ~$250. I would prefer new versus used since they are discontinued and i am uncertain about warrantee. Maybe i can afford to order one next week. No doubt I will have questions, if rooting does not go smoothly.

HOT Watch smartwatch [UPDATE: VIDEO! JULY 31st 2014]

i think this watch deserves it's own topic (and no, i don't have shares or any ties with them )
original kickstarter project here
now that i have had the Sony Smartwatch 2 for a month or so, i'm glad i backed this project
yes, the SW2 has apps and a color screen, so?
it's not like many of the apps are useful anyway
no microphone, no speaker, no response from Sony on reported issues/wishes
and i really don't need a smartwatch to replace my phone, tasks like browsing, reading email, news, etc and playing games are perfect on the 5 inch screen of my Butterfly S, so i don't really need a big color screen
there are 5 things i want from a watch
-long battery life, 4-5 days minimum
-thin, about 8-9mm should be the max
-a lot of choice in watch faces, being able to design them myself would be the ultimate, all of them should show time+date, extra info like weather would be nice (like min/max temp for the day)
-handle calls
-show important mail/whatsapp/twitter/facebook notifications (from people i find important)
the HOT Watch does most of them, i especially like the way it handles calls
you can pre-order the watch since a couple of weeks

Features (copied from kickstarter):
-Private calls amplified by the palm of your hand
-Speakerphone
-Voice activated calling and other phone control using your phone’s native voice recognition such as iPhone SIRI
-Receive and reply to Messages (SMS, Email, Facebook and Twitter)
-Music player remote control (for your phone’s native player)
-Multiple dial faces
-Automatic fast contacts sync
-Caller ID
-Audible and silent vibrating alarms and alerts
-Pedometer: Record running, walking, steps climbed, calories burned
-Fall detection with automatic text to emergency number (unless cancelled in 30 seconds)
-LED illumination
-Note capture: captures your handwriting on the watch face
-Tactile vibration feedback
-HOT Proximity Alerts: Never leave your phone behind and prevent theft
-Find your phone with remote beep
-Built-in LED Flashlight (ONLY in Curve)
-Water Resistant
-Multi-touch projected capacitive screen (Skim finger above glass to change screens)
if any info is missing/incomplete, let me know and i'll add it
update may 2nd 2014:
Essential Functionality Android Phone App SDK is available.

finally!

I too have backed this Kickstarter project, I think this watch will be great for formal occasions. Nice looking sleek and thin unlike Omates true smart watch ,that I backed also, but will only use for outdoorsy stuff, kayaking ,swimming ,beach, etc.
TBO it does sound like you have a vested interest in the Hot watch. I agree , great looking watch but it does not have that much more on the competition except looks. I really doubt if there will as many Apps as there is available for the Pebble, only due to the popularity of Pebble compared to Hot,first to the starting line I guess

i don't care for apps, really. like i said, it doesn't need to replace my smartphone at all, i just want a watch with some additional functionality
the HOT Watch doesn't even run apps, does it? or very limited
i just hope there will be plenty watch faces to choose from or have the ability to design/add them myself
ps: would you mind removing the quoted part? don't need all those pics twice... thanks
A sdk is coming out. I was hoping more excitement and buzz for this watch..can't wait to get mine.

i don't get it either, maybe once it's available in stores that people will start noticing?
i also don't understand why people prefer those clunky things on their wrists
i think it's too early for those mini-smartphone-on-your-wrist things, they need to make them (a lot) smaller/thinner first, use flexible displays, way better batteries, that kind of stuff
in the meantime, watches like the HOT Watch are ideal
IMHO ofcourse
I was close to getting the Omate. But I can't imagine charging twice or three times a day. Plus the private is pretty cool.. We need tasker support out the box or early on.

Two more e-paper watches
Two more e-paper watches from China:
(1) Sonostar - http://www.sonostar.com/Smartwatch/Specificaion
(2) Tomoon - http://www.tomoon.cn/index (No English)
Dunno what processor these two watches use.
E-paper watches should be more battery frugal because power is only used when the screen is refreshed. However, e-paper screen refresh rate is low (< 15 fps) so don't expect fluid youtube video or game playing (if these are ever possible), and there is "ghost" problem during refresh. Also the older e-ink / e-paper devices don't have night light, but the latest models eg. Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Glo have front light (e-paper is opaque and doesn't use back lighting).

If you are talking about Omate, the correct statement would be charging every 2-3 days, NOT 2-3 times a day. I think you mixed it up with Gear (which btw last more than 24hr on a single charge)
Regarding HOT Watch, I can tell you from experience of owning MetaWatch and Omate TS, as well as reading plenty about Pebble at the time of the release - when it comes to KS projects, their focus is to deliver hardware first with unfinished software/apps. After all the delays and final release of hardware, all users become beta testers of software, and often they rely on XDA and other developers to release custom ROMs and write their own software. I don't expect HOT to be any different, although would love to be proven wrong. Even big guys like Sammy and Sony can't get fully functionality software out of the door with hardware release. As I said, every company just wants to get to a final hardware production to start shipping the units. Then, software will follow up.
Two to three days sounds good but what kind of use are you doing? Screen on times ect.
I was hoping the hot will get the support level the pebble did as I like the ts a lot but not quite sold on it yet.
hoping Google will announce something this coming year.

Not as much use yet, with heavy use realistically it will probably be a day considering this is a real android "smartphone" on your wrist
Regarding Pebble, it only took them what, 8-9 months, million$ of investment, and being sold in Best Buy, Amazon, AT&T stores, etc.
I do agree with you, once Google will release something, it will be at a reasonable price (obviously subsidized) and will have a working native android software from get-go.
@slim_thumb that sonostar watch looks pretty decent actually, nice resolution as well
but you still can't order it, there's a video of over 6 months old on youtube where they show a mockup, because that's all they had at that point, maybe still is a mockup
then again, it really doesn't do a whole lot more than my SW2
that's why i want the HOT watch, the private handsfree function seems ideal to me
@vectron you're probably right about the software, but as long as the hardware is right, they can always fix the software
Sony did release a reasonable update recently, but they're not there yet and their support is a mess
very interested in whatever google will come up with, but again, i think a watch with flexible display and (very) good battery life (and hopefully private handsfree function like the HOT watch has) will be the ultrimate (maybe HOT Watch 2 )
until then, i think i'll be very happy with the HOT watch

Sony did release a reasonable update recently, but they're not there yet and their support is a mess
very interested in whatever google will come up with, but again, i think a watch with flexible display and (very) good battery life (and hopefully private handsfree function like the HOT watch has) will be the ultrimate (maybe HOT Watch 2 )
until then, i think i'll be very happy with the HOT watch
