[Q] Modding the loud speaker on the X10 - XPERIA X10 General

i took a look at the speaker on the X10 and i was thinking if it was possible to poke holes just like the iPhone speaker mod to make it WAYYY LOUDER, had anyone tried it or is there a potential risk involved?

hmmm... try it, let is know how it turns out

Do you mean literally "poke holes" can you explain the mod? X10 definitely needs a volume boost!

Take it from an audio nut: The size of the holes is not a significant limiting factor for the volume level of the sound that makes it out (at least not unless you're talking about a surface that really has only a few freakishly microscopic holes to begin with, which the Xperia does not).
You'd be damaging your speaker for no good reason. I wouldn't do it.

I did find some settings for the speaker volume in a DB file on the phone but i need sql lite to be able to edit it to see if i can make it louder.. this was on 1.6 tho and not 2.1 i need to look and see if the database is still in the same place

Lower volume

Hi all,
I tend to use a BT headset with my Athena most of the time, but today I forgot it before going out! so I had to go back to using the Athena to my ear, not a huge problem with hands my size, however even with the volume down to its lowest it was still way to loud. Does anyone know of a reg hack or small program that will let you lower the volume down to a discreet volume, and not a hands free volume? its not a problem most of the time, but as a paramedic some of my calls can be a little personal. Its just in case it happens again. you can appreciate I'm not in the position to nip home for left items
Many thanks

I put my fingers over the loudspeakers.... isn't confortable but it works!
I have been thinking about this issue a bit lately myself. My thought is to glue something over both the left and right speaker to completely or almost completely seal it. I might try with different materials and see the effect. May be we can make it almost like a normal embedded earpiece.. just thinking.

hi
i already tried to put tape over the speakers, and can tell you it wont work out. it is like the hole athena will sound, the backcover acts like a speaker. when you tape the speaker holes it sounds a litle bit like it came from a cave, but is still much to loud for a 'private' conversation. i think you have to grab a soldering iron and a resistor, to come to a solution, or someone find a way to reduce the volume by software some more than the volume slider can do.
mad
Buy several cheap sets of earbuds and put them in different locatations where you might need them (car, office, briefcase). Not needing stereo for phone calls, clip off one of the earbuds for easier handling.

Well that is a good idea, and one that I have done already. One at the ambulance station, one at home, one in the car, and one in the rig. three ended back at home AHH the price of age! The one in the rig got nicked, so ive put them all back now, but thats why I need the program or hack.
Thanks for the idea's guys, any more?
take care

That is a good idea, could it be so, that there is a kinds of software, that we can adjust the volumen of left and right speaker, so that we can just use the right speaker or just use the left speaker, what ever. has anybody heard of that kind of tiny little soft ware?
Is there a regestry setting to lower the in call volume on the athena itself, so it would start at nothing?
Any solution on this "problem"? Sometimes my headset runs out of battery.
Regards
Hans
This only seems to be a problem with some of the cooked ROMS. The original WM6 ROM that came with my 7501 had a good low-volume level, but when I switched to AP4 the low-end is what used to be about mid-level before.
It must be either a registry change, or a sound driver.
Or a software that make it possible to decrease the volume more

European Sound Limitation

Hi,
As usual, we have a sound limitation in Europe that make this mobile phone unusable to listen music in the metro.
Do you have some idea to remove this limitation ?
Modify a file, registry ?
Thanks for your help.

Probably, and take care of other passengers in the train
who are forced to eavesdrop on your Susan Boyle playlist
But .. .seriously... this limit has to be removed if we can, because we can.
It's a reg setting but HD TWeak from the Touch HD still works to set this. I used it to remove the limitation as my hearing isn't great.
I have set mine to maximum.
Music playback still seems much quiter than on the HD, and I'm comvinced it occasionally reduces volume randomly!
Humm, interesting. DOes anyone know the actual registry key(s) which need to be modified, and how? I try to avoid installing tweaking software when I can just go into regedit and change things myself...
TIA

Use proper headphones and keep your noise to yourself.
in case you are one of those persons that walk around playing their ****ty music on their phones speaker ... then go and DIE!
In case you use earphones, get some in-ear plugs, that should cover the problem of noise around you.

I would be careful of in-ear monitors as they called, I have used quite a few mainly ultimate ears ue10 pro. Its been a couple of years, but I am now starting to suffer from serious problems with my right ear. So yes do take very good care of your ears cause trust me when the problems start, you will long for the day when you had perfect hearing.

Sound Problems, Maybe

I was just wondering, on the back of the Hero, there are two "Speaker holes", one at/near the top, and one on the bend. With my hero, no sound directly come out of the lower hole, EG: I can hear sound from it - but that's probably just the other speaker - and is MUCH quiter than the "upper" speaker.
http://www.androidtapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/HTC-Hero-Back-View.jpg
^You can see the two speaker holes..
Anyone else have this "problem", is that just the way heros are? WHY-O-WHY then are there two holes, implying stereo sound...
Ya know what I mean?
i don´t want to destroy your dreams but it has only one speaker
Ok, so why is there ANOTHER hole lower down on the phone?
i can´t explan this in english but i try...
there you can put this "rope" in it. see here

Look in the manual, there´s a picture around page 30
I got mine from, ugh, fleBay... SO no manual, and a wrist strap defenatly doesn't go in there... But - there is no direct speaker sound coming out from there, on everyone's Hero?
If you have sound coming out of your lower hole, you need to see a doctor, or possibly Simon Cowell.
Go to the HTC homepage under support you can download your manual.

Haha, but seriously, I Don't, what I'm asking is - Does sound come out for you? There is no speaker there so why did they put a hole there? In the battery holding 'bay' there are channels which may 'channel' the sound from the main speaker?
As long as no-one else has sound there, it's fine, I though the hero might have two speakers and one of mine was broken..
Thanks

Yes, a wrist strap DOES go in there.
The wrist strap goes through there and onto the hook on the back of the phone, you have to take the cover off before you can do it.
There's no sound coming from it on mine. Could it be anything to do with the mic? I've not bothered looking at a disassembly guide yet as I haven't needed to.

Volume hack possible?

I know on some other Android phone's (e.g. G1 http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f4/volume-increase-hack-found-18107/), a software modification has allowed for much higher volume.
Not sure if actually increases the speaker volume as well, or just through headphones?
+1 for the speaker!
Agree! The speaker is WAY too low!!!
/CK
+1 here too
It would be nice, the speaker is crazy quiet.
i wonder wot the reason was for them to keep it at that level of sound and is way to queit
Or it possible use the front speaker for avi/video/streaming?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
It seems everyone has the low volume speakers.
I noticed that Angry Birds seems to be a little bit louder than other things.
Anyway, I highly urge everyone that thinks this is a problem to give this feedback to the HTC customer support. Obviously this is the only way to get an official fix for this quicker, if at all.
Wonder if the speaker can handle a increase in max volume.
Anyway, aren't there hidden service menus on the Desire HD that can be triggered with a phone code? In the service menus of a phone there are always some nice parameters to tweak.
I tried some general codes, but none of them seems to work (except the *#*#INFO#*#* of course, but that's a general hidden android menu... even works on the emulator)
until we get access to the rom via Bootloader, there is no general tweak we can do.
However, just for music, try PowerAmp from the market. It has a great pre-amp setting to boost the volume (be careful not to blow your speakers though)
We want increasement in the general speaker volume... Not just music

You can do that, but you will need a script to do that at every launch, since /system write is not permanent.
Furthermore, after each time you adb push the files, you need to restart mediaserver in order pull in the new settings.
Last but not least, you will need to modify the DHD audiopara, since the G2 might not work well.
To make the long story short... SPAM HTC's EMAIL!!
WE DIDNT BUY THA F*CKING PHONE FOR THIS ISSUES ...
And they thought they could fool us ... with their Dolby and SRS enhancements!
Disguzting!!
worse comes to worse ill rip this open and find a replacement speaker, i cant even hear it ring in my pocket and im missing calls

I experienced the same, missing calls because the damn volume is just too low!
Also, when you use the speakers when having a phone call, you can't even hear the person unless you're in an absolutely quiet room... The same goes for music, youtube, navigation..... Anything!!!??!?

I returned mine because of the low speaker volume. I was missing 99% of calls because I couldn't hear the phone ringing. In my business I just can't afford to miss calls. As I sold my normal desire to get this phone I had to buy an Orange San Francisco to use till something else comes along.
I was playing with a friend's Nokia N8 & have to say the speaker quality & loundness is outstanding on it. Also used as a phone its much better than the DHD. Shame the OS is a bit dodgy.
speaker
I am not sure if you are speaking about speakers of DHD in general or just about external. Well, Ive sent back my DHD to Vodafone because call speaker was so useless that I could not even hear other person when I had TV on. Hopefully it was just one bad piece but its apparent that HTC fcked up DHD with poor quality speakers in general. I am waiting for my phone replacement and even when I know that it would be hard to say DHD goodbye I am afraid Ill have to if speaker quality will be that bad again

Why don't we use this... compile libaudioflinger and DSP Manager, in which we can set presets (you can +10 every channel of sound, so it comes out 10x louder).
Good luck compiling... I couldn't find an example
http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_frameworks_base <-- libaudioflinger is in /libs/ (yes it's default in Cyanogenmod)
http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager DSP Manager android application, yes everyone should be able to compile this one

Took the plunge with the Microphone mod [Video added]

So I opened the back of the A500 and looked around abit and switched places with the microphone and the noise canceller. And now at least when I record, peoples voices can be heard pretty decent. Plus I drilled a hole in the 'hole' to open up the space for the sound to come in abit.
So even with the Acer case on you can hear the voices pretty well
Before you couldnt hear anything. But now the whole google voice thing isnt so easy to use since the mic is face the opposite way but I never used it anyways, plus for VOIP calls its much better to use a headphone.
Just sharing
Please feel free to ask any questions.
Cheers!
Edit: From what I saw in the back I believe the microphone could be changed to a better one some day. Just a matter of finding a good replacement.
(01/08/2011)Add: Here is a sample of the sound when you record a person speaking infont of the iconia now with my mod.
Link sample with modded microphone: [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33166156/Test.3gp
This is my son and as you can see you can hear him perfectly well
I think the noise canceller could be adjusted to 'muffle' the screeching sound abit.
Cheers!
Edit: Link was broken, fixed now.
i am really thinking about doing that. Iit easy to open the case?

Yes its actually very easy, you have to begin at the corner either left or right on the bottom of the A500 (meaning the Dock port area) you take something very thin and sturdy but be careful not scratch it up or bend to hard just make an opening maybe 2,3mm then stick something plasticky (like a protective shield cover slate) but strong and stick in the opening and drag slowly to the right until the entire left side is open (left to the Dock port I mean) and then from there you just gently lift up up until you have the whole bottom open and then you just again you the plastic tool to drag the sides (left and right) and just gently lift with the plastic tool and slowly it will loosen bit by bit once you have left and right and the bottom released then you just hold the whole thing and lift it and with will click off by itself from the upper part.
Here is a video showing pretty much what I described, its very easy:

...there's a tear down vid?
thanks, i opened it up and did some tweaking unfortunately it's only about 30% better, i also made a hole for the case as well. how much did yours improve when you did your mods. i'm guessing the rear mic has to be tweaked as well. thanks
Did you switch places with the mic and the noise canceller?
Pull the Mic out take it to radio shack and get a better set of mic to go in there.I have done this with Michael and internal speakers on notebooks. But I have Bluetooth high def headset. So no need here
this mic problem is seriously killing me.
I often use my tabto record videos but i can never hear any voices cause they are really low. So i am ready to do anything to the tab for a better microphone experience.
As far as drilling holes is concerned, i would want to know where is the mic suitated if there are two. I do noe that one is on the top of the screen in the middle gap between the metal cover n screen glass. Is there another one?
And what can be possibly done to fix or better this issue?
I even tried voip and no1 could hear me, very disappointing pls help sum1.....
i found a kind of solution on youtube...
