Is it possible to remap the physical keyboard on the Droid(milestone) 2?
For example remapping the arrow keys so that when i press the 'up' key on the physical keyboard an 'å' will appear in the highlighted widget.

I don't think it helps the physical keyboard but the soft keyboard can be re-mapped by a number of apps in the market. But if I find anything about physical keyboard remapping I'd like to change my qwerty to dvorak to try it out lol.
I am not sure how you get a different symbol, but this may help as you can change the order of the keys.

I copied my key_code_map.txt to my sdcard and I'm going to see if I can change the values to change the physical key map.
Were you able to remap the keys you wanted?
I ask because I got a droid 2 yesterday and the del key did not work and a remap would be easier than trying to get the online reseller to replace it.

I didn't get it figured out it seems there are a few different places where the keyboard looks for mapping but I think I need a different file like an xml or something. each file I tried didn't change.

They have dvorak and other styles for the on screen keyboard but not for the physical one.

Im pretty sure the keyboard mapping is part of the kernel which we have no way of changing. Just saying.

It's a completley different phone by Motorola I don't think he read that you do currently already own a Desire Z
Are you talking about an alternate touchscreen keyboard? Of the more popular ones on the Market, Thumb Keyboard is the only one that seems to have arrow keys. The arrow key layout reminds me of the old stock HTC touchscreen keyboard on Windows Mobile devices.
But why not just use the optical trackpad to move the cursor, instead of clogging up screen real estate with arrow keys?
You could map 4 buttons to up/down/left/right. Maybe the 2 program buttons, the extra shift, and the search? Do a search for key mapper, it's been posted here before.

Or maybe help "Z Arrow" app on market ...
'Keyboard from Android 2.3' is free from the Market and has arrow keys that 'collapse' in and out when you need them by holding the spacebar key and dragging up to activate, or down to deactivate. Screen real estate is preserved when you don't need them plus i reckon the gingerbread keyboard is pretty impressive in itself.

Smart Keyboard Pro has an option (its off by default) to turn on a dpad/arrow. Works good.
if you want it on the physical keyboard you can do what i did and use button remapper to change shortcute keys 1 and 2 to left and right, work so much better for terminal then the track pad.
Hi all, I'm trying to add the following actions as the 3 keyboard shortcut keys:
Button 1: Voice Input (voice-to-text)
Button 2: Home key
Button 3: Back key
So far, I've only had success with Home key by choosing my Launcher app as the shortcut.
Anyone have any advice on how to make these actions work as shortcut keys?
There is a guide in the development section, I forgot the name, but its an older guide so just look carefully for it. Also, try searching for it.

why would you need this? you can just reach up with your right thumb and hit the buttons lol.
As far as voice search (or voice dialer), there's actually an app for that so you should be able to just apply that as the app to launch on key press.

I'm lazy ok, lol.
Voice search is different from voice input I think.
Voice input is the one that's only for text-to-speech. The virtual keyboard has a button for it, but not the hardware keyboard.
EDIT: Cool, I found the guide to add Home and Back buttons.
I just needed to change vision-keypad.kl
Now to find out how to add Voice Input to the button on the left!

Well if you're really lazy, you'd want to keep the home, back and search buttons where they are, and use the 3 quick launch keys for 3 apps that can't be created with the capacitive home back and search keys.

How so? Most times, when people want to change them, it's to re-assign them to a physical button or to remap a physical button.

A number of users have been wanting to swap their menu and back softkeys... I believe it's handy for left-handed people who have smaller hands and can't reach the opposite button. So here's how you do it
1) Root phone
2) Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/usr/keylayout.
3) Open the file Generic.kl
4) Make the following change:
LOCATE line
Code:
# key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED"
REPLACE with
Code:
# key 158 MENU WAKE_DROPPED"
LOCATE line
Code:
# key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED"
REPLACE with
Code:
# key 139 BACK WAKE_DROPPED"
Save the file Generic.kl, and reboot the phone. Your buttons are now swapped.
I have not provided an "update.zip" to do this, because lately far too many people are relying on one-click methods, and don't know how to make changes themselves, and "devs" don't document these methods for future. So please don't go making a flashable zip and posting it...

Been looking for this for along time, especially coming from Gnex the back soft key was on the laft side. There is also the size of the Note2, make it easier to work with the left hand only.

Well spotted, I've fixed that. You are basically swapping the numbers of menu and back, but I had a typo in it. The version in the thread is now correct.
I honestly think it's the right handed people who mostly hold their phones in their left hand. Thank you so much for this fix. I've been using button savior but this will be even better.
@Scott, if you want a customized buttons with more buttons, use button savior. You can customize size, location, number of buttons etc, here a pic. I have it setup where if i hit the trigger, the buttons will pop out and go away in 1 second. very convenient. But since I only need back button, this thread is a better way for me it seems.
@OP, Now that i have this setup, is there another line i can change to turn off the lights behind these button permanantly?
edit: nvm there was an option under display to turn those off

Hmm interesting, I am right handed, and hold my phone in my right hand. I do admittedly have no problem reaching the far side of the screen with my thumb for typing etc...
If I'm not typing then I still hold it in my right hand, but from the centre, giving me a full reach across the whole phone...
But whether you're left or right handed doesn't matter... Fix is the same For anyone else looking for it, the lights on the buttons can be disabled in display settings.

the only, only, only thing i miss from the evo-lte coming to this phone is the dedicated hardware camera/search button on the side. i feel this note is just one physical button short. oh well.

Why not just use "Swipe Pad" app & its just one finger action to camera button from any screen.
I'll look at swipe pad, but,i mainly used the button for search and long press for voice search. i rarely,rarely use the camera at all. the buttons at the bottom, physical buttons, could really have been 4 again on a phone this size. personal preference like the extra side button, that's all.

Double press - I don't think you can do this from generic.kl - you'd need to modify the framework where the buttons are received.
Possibly same for long presses, I'm not sure...

Hello everyone.
Last time my touchscreen stopped working. I figured out that every time i use 'end call key' my touch screen is not responding.
Question : Is it possible to switch key fundions? I mean... for example i want to make 'home' key my 'end call key' and vice versa. And if it is possible then how i can do it?
Check out Button Savior. I don't know about remapping hardware keys but this can give you software controls to get around it. There are also a tonne of screen lock widgets that could work, and some ROMs even have it built into quick settings on the notification drawer or the softkeys on ICS+ ROMs.

There used to be an app called button remapper on the play store but I can't find it now!!
Well anyway you can change the button mappings by editing the kepad layout file in /system/usr/keylayout/ folder.
Their will be a few their so you will have to figure out which one to edit for your rom.
Mine is htcleo_keypad.kl.
You will need a root explorer to do this, just open with a text editor!
Make sure to write down the mappings before starting then you can swap them about.
I am not sure but I think the power button isn't changeble but you can assign power to another key.

Ironically I didn't actually bother searching on XDA So much for telling people to search
