It's a completley different phone by Motorola I don't think he read that you do currently already own a Desire Z

Are you talking about an alternate touchscreen keyboard? Of the more popular ones on the Market, Thumb Keyboard is the only one that seems to have arrow keys. The arrow key layout reminds me of the old stock HTC touchscreen keyboard on Windows Mobile devices.
But why not just use the optical trackpad to move the cursor, instead of clogging up screen real estate with arrow keys?

You could map 4 buttons to up/down/left/right. Maybe the 2 program buttons, the extra shift, and the search? Do a search for key mapper, it's been posted here before.

Or maybe help "Z Arrow" app on market ...

'Keyboard from Android 2.3' is free from the Market and has arrow keys that 'collapse' in and out when you need them by holding the spacebar key and dragging up to activate, or down to deactivate. Screen real estate is preserved when you don't need them plus i reckon the gingerbread keyboard is pretty impressive in itself.

Smart Keyboard Pro has an option (its off by default) to turn on a dpad/arrow. Works good.

if you want it on the physical keyboard you can do what i did and use button remapper to change shortcute keys 1 and 2 to left and right, work so much better for terminal then the track pad.

Best Way to Move Cursor

On iphone you can hold and drag the magnifying glass and its pretty easy
On phones with trackball the same idea...
What do we do for the vibrant? Just tap? I have hard time putting cursor exactly where i want it and its such a waste of time and its irritating
Help / Tips appreciated
Which keyboard are you using?

I have the same problem put the cursor to where I want it to be is PITA.
I'm curious too. I know you can get the d-pad with the Swype keyboard, but I primarily use the Samsung keyboard.
Tap the "?123" Button to bring up the D-Pad.
If you're using Swype, glide from info => SYM buttons to get D pad.
On Samsung keyboard hold down the "?123" button.

How about on the Android keyboard?
sadly the only thing i miss from the iphone is the magnifying glass long press thing you get while trying to put the cursor inbetween two letters

Cursor Madness...

I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor
Thanks to both of you. The 123 option is a PITA, but it's something. Good to know that Froyo is gonna have a cursor. Thank goodness....

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

You need to hold 123, not just click it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It's exactly what I needed. Will hold me off until Froyo.
Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.

Keyboard re-map

Is it possible to remap the physical keyboard on the Droid(milestone) 2?
For example remapping the arrow keys so that when i press the 'up' key on the physical keyboard an 'å' will appear in the highlighted widget.
Thanks.
I'd like to know that to!
I don't think it helps the physical keyboard but the soft keyboard can be re-mapped by a number of apps in the market. But if I find anything about physical keyboard remapping I'd like to change my qwerty to dvorak to try it out lol.
I am not sure how you get a different symbol, but this may help as you can change the order of the keys.

I copied my key_code_map.txt to my sdcard and I'm going to see if I can change the values to change the physical key map.
Were you able to remap the keys you wanted?
I ask because I got a droid 2 yesterday and the del key did not work and a remap would be easier than trying to get the online reseller to replace it.

I didn't get it figured out it seems there are a few different places where the keyboard looks for mapping but I think I need a different file like an xml or something. each file I tried didn't change.
I to would like to know. Dvorak would be interesting

They have dvorak and other styles for the on screen keyboard but not for the physical one.

Im pretty sure the keyboard mapping is part of the kernel which we have no way of changing. Just saying.

[Q] Keyboard with longpress numbers

Does anyone know if there's a good HC keyboard which has the longpress number keys?
I find it annoying to keep having to switch to number mode just to press a number then go back to word typing again.
Especially useful for WPA keys etc. where you have ABC1ABC... etc.
It's one of the things I disliked about the iPhone's keypad, and loved about the Desire's!
Thanks
Try Thumb Keyboard. It's in beta testing just now so you can get it free from here: http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com
I'm using it now and it's brilliant.

Same here, awesome!
Thumb Keyboard is definitely the way to go. There is one in the market but the beta works great and has better key placement.

You can press and hold the number key, slide to the number or symbol you want, then release and it will be back to the alphabet.

Great tip!! Makes life a lot easier! Tried the thumb keyboard but it takes longer to type/find the right keys and the xoom felt a bit too heavy after typing for a while.
Good tip Mikey, thanks.
I find Thumb Keyboard much easier to type and no problems at all finding the correct keys.

With the multi-touch keyboard, you can also hold the ?123 button with your left hand and select the number with your right. You'll still jump back to the main qwerty keyboard.

that's not how it works.
swype from the swype-key to 5 and it will open the keypad
swype from the swype-key to the option-key and will open a edit-menu
I think he's talking about the other keyboard. Swype had other commands, too, such as:
Select All - Swype from Swype key to letter A
Copy - Swype to C
Paste - Swype to V
Omg thats soo helpful. Thanks for pointing that out!

Seems less reliable in it,s action, and more work than just tapping the number key.
This feature can be turned on or off in the keyboard settings.
Wow... thanks a lot! I also works on my Smart Keyboard Pro
