Voice Input, Home and Back as keyboard shortcuts? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi all, I'm trying to add the following actions as the 3 keyboard shortcut keys:
Button 1: Voice Input (voice-to-text)
Button 2: Home key
Button 3: Back key
So far, I've only had success with Home key by choosing my Launcher app as the shortcut.
Anyone have any advice on how to make these actions work as shortcut keys?

There is a guide in the development section, I forgot the name, but its an older guide so just look carefully for it. Also, try searching for it.

why would you need this? you can just reach up with your right thumb and hit the buttons lol.
As far as voice search (or voice dialer), there's actually an app for that so you should be able to just apply that as the app to launch on key press.

I'm lazy ok, lol.
Voice search is different from voice input I think.
Voice input is the one that's only for text-to-speech. The virtual keyboard has a button for it, but not the hardware keyboard.
EDIT: Cool, I found the guide to add Home and Back buttons.
I just needed to change vision-keypad.kl
Now to find out how to add Voice Input to the button on the left!

Well if you're really lazy, you'd want to keep the home, back and search buttons where they are, and use the 3 quick launch keys for 3 apps that can't be created with the capacitive home back and search keys.

Suggestions for possible Apps for the Developers out there

Hey guys, so I have been using my tp2 for a couple months now and I have noticed some things that could have some kind of App development. I have no idea where to begin with Developing apps and all of that tech stuff, so I'll put my ideas out there. If these things do exist please inform me, thanks
1. Customization of the Mute Key on the back - Personally I have never once touched this button because I dont use the speakerphone that often. My dad on the other hand uses his speakerphone many times throughout the day, but he has still no need for the mute button. Which leads to my ideas of being able to customize it for a push and/or push and hold functionality.
2. A keyboard that is just a D-pad. I tried the "G-pad" app which is supposed to enable to g-sensor to be used for scrolling, but I haven't been able to figure out how to use it properly. I also tried the ZoomAdds scrolling with the Zoom Bar, this is alright, however it doesn't always work for some reason.
3. Im not sure if this one is an app, or just a functionality of the Energy Rom, but i downloaded some apps from the Marketplace and the majority of them dont sort out into the folders in the Energy rom (such as Games, Tools, etc.) Is there an app for this or you can control it from the the settings in the energy rom or something? I didnt install the energy rom on my phone, which is why I know like nothing about it.
I use Keyboard controller for your #1 problem there. I hold my mute button to toggle Wifi on and off.

You can also use rory's suggestion for problem #2 if you want...just map a directional arrow to a long-press of each of the 4 front hardware buttons, in whichever arrangement feels best for you (up/left/right/down, left/up/down/right, whatever)

Definitely. I also have mapped my 4 front buttons to various things...
double press back arrow = CleanRAM
triple press back arrow = Resco File Explorer
long press back arrow = YoMoMedia
triple press home = rotate screen
long press home = iGO8
Im just curious, what is the timeout on the double and triple presses? Like what if i was in a list and i had down set to a single press of the home key, and i pressed it a couple times, and I activated the double press function?

It's pretty reasonable. I was scared of the same thing, but it has never done something I didn't want it to do.
Thanks a lot

[SOLVED][REMAP DIAL BUTTON TO SEARCH BUTTON] Lack of search button

Hi.
I really miss the search button from the Desire device. I have tried to remap the send (dial) button to search by altering the bravo-keypad.kl file in /system/usr/keylayout. But the change didn't work. My altered keypad file is posted below, maybe someone can tell me why it's not working?
SOLUTION: Edit the right file. In my build the default qwerty.kl file was used not the bravo-keypad.kl. Adding SEARCH to key 231 and 61 turns the send key into a search key Even voice search by long press works
key 102 HOME
key 139 MENU
key 158 BACK
key 217 SEARCH
key 107 ENDCALL WAKE_DROPPED
key 116 POWER WAKE_DROPPED
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
key 231 SEARCH
key 61 SEARCH

just revert what you changed back to how it was.
then hold down the start button (Windows Logo) and the keyboard will pop up, once you start typing it will go into the search app.

This is exactly what I have done, remapped the physical send button (left most button on the HD2) to behave like a search button. HTC Desire does not have a send button either, and I don't miss it. I find it more usefully to have a search button then a send (call) button.

Try remapping a button to DPAD_CENTER and see if it works for the trackball in camcorder.

All files related to key mappings are located in /system/usr/keylayout . The qwerty.kl is the one that android is defaulting to if not specified otherwise. There may be some other kl files in the folder, but the vendor specific file is just "left overs" from the ROM rip (in some cases).

Mapping End Key
Has anyone mapped the end call button to work. On my Darkstone build I have to hit the end call on screen, hitting the red hard key just shuts the screen off (very annoying). I then have to wake up the phone and end the call.
I pulled both bravo_keypad and qwerty files but both seem to be set to the right end key.
Any ideas or help?

theres an options in the settings menu to do this, i just cant find it. I used to have it set correctly, but changing roms every few days, you start to get confused. I would appreciate it if someone could point us in the right direction.

Now i just need help with chaning the volume buttons to the camera buttons.
I changed:
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
To:
key 115 CAMERA WAKE
key 114 CAMERA WAKE
Upon press it starts the camera app, but will not take a photo. However when i switch to the camcorder function, that works just fine.
Ideas?
ps: i just use a widget to control my volume, which is very rare for me.

Cursor Madness...

I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor
Thanks to both of you. The 123 option is a PITA, but it's something. Good to know that Froyo is gonna have a cursor. Thank goodness....

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.

keyboard Woes

OK i HATE that this thing has no way to manually trigger the keyboard. Inevitably I find text entry forms everywhere that will not trigger it, OR WORSE..
IE the search function for this site, click it, the keyboard pops up, and the search options poof! On my DX i can manually bring up the KB, then click search, and it STAYS UP!!!
So anyhow, is there anyway conceivable to add a manual keyboard softkey, or notification button to this thing?

there is a way to have the keyboard button on your notifications:
Settings > Language & input > Keyboard Settings > Input Method Selector > Always Show
not sure why you are having the exact problem you are though, i haven't experienced it and ive been using the browser very heavily.
if you open the Xoom Android Development Forum,
then just above the right side you click the search button,
It does not open the search popup only to vanish when your keyboard appears?
This happens to me on multiple devices!!!
and that setting does not actually work
I have this issue on few sites as well, android seems to simply not recognize some text input boxes...even though I can place a cursor, there's non way to force-launch the keyboard, like long-pressing the menu button does on a lot of phones...

That setting will make the keyboard icon show up when the keyboard is triggered. It let's you switch between multiple keyboards on the fly (or voice input).
so any ideas for how to manualy use the keyboard ?

[Q] is it possible to switch key functions

Hello everyone.
Last time my touchscreen stopped working. I figured out that every time i use 'end call key' my touch screen is not responding.
Question : Is it possible to switch key fundions? I mean... for example i want to make 'home' key my 'end call key' and vice versa. And if it is possible then how i can do it?
Check out Button Savior. I don't know about remapping hardware keys but this can give you software controls to get around it. There are also a tonne of screen lock widgets that could work, and some ROMs even have it built into quick settings on the notification drawer or the softkeys on ICS+ ROMs.

There used to be an app called button remapper on the play store but I can't find it now!!
Well anyway you can change the button mappings by editing the kepad layout file in /system/usr/keylayout/ folder.
Their will be a few their so you will have to figure out which one to edit for your rom.
Mine is htcleo_keypad.kl.
You will need a root explorer to do this, just open with a text editor!
Make sure to write down the mappings before starting then you can swap them about.
I am not sure but I think the power button isn't changeble but you can assign power to another key.
Ah, I was wondering if I had just gone crazy because I thought I remembered an app by that name but I couldn't find it.
