Advent vega - Vega General

Hi, will this be added to the list of devices. as i think this is gonna be a popular product.

There certainly looks to be a lot of pent-up demand for this in the UK. Hopefully in a week or so there will actually be some the stock in and we can start ripping it apart. I doubt if XDA will add it until there is significant take up, but all the signs are that this will be a popular device. I'm certainly going to pick one up...

same here, shame it is not 3g but hey thats why I have a nexus aswell.

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion that 3G is not that important on a 10 inch tablet. I'm never going to be away from a wifi when using the thing. I had a Galaxy Tab for a short while, and while appreciating the ability to get Internet connection via 3G and being able to use it as a phone, I've decided that for a large tablet wifi is all that's really needed for me. Tends to be a lot cheaper too...

any news on this yet, theres exciting stuff happening over at modaco but you gotta be a member to get the roms

Any updates on this yet? I'm on the fence about a tablet but if I am to get one, I'm leaning this way.

I have had my Advent Vega since Nov last year and would recommend it.
Seams to be getting a following.

Goodbye Moto, you suck & I hope we never meet again

I took delivery of my UK Xoom 3G on 2 May 2011 and fell in love with it. I knew it had bugs but I still loved it because love is blind.
I knew updates would come....I had a Google Experience Device so I just knew I wouldn't be left with a crippled device, so I kept on loving it.
Then 3.1 was released in the US. EXCELLENT I thought, in a couple of weeks we in the UK would also be shown some love by the mighty Motorola. It never came.
Other devices came late to the party and were given these mysterious software updates, my friends mocked me and my wife pleaded with me to get an iPad which would show me the same amount of love as I would give it, but I kept faith...I loved my Xoom you see.
Its now June 19th and Motorola have abandoned me, they refuse to talk to me and refuse to love me back, my poor beautifully built Xoom sits there happily force closing at every opportunity and I sit here pondering how my investment so full of promise has become a mere missed opportunity. How sad....Some relationships aren't meant to be and I for one will now be looking for a divorce. Bye Moto, I hope you can live with yourself
Sent from my Motorola Xoom 3G (now on Ebay)
I have a bit the same feelings like you...! I like my xoom really, but it piss me off that the NEW update policy of google only works in US well! Thats unfair, and this is one point why i would go to apple! Yes i have a lot of rules and things what i CANT do but i get allways software updates, for the next 2years / generations. And everyone gets the updates at the same time...!
And to Moto, Motorola should push google to deliver more update or make it like samsung to update apps over the market!!
For me at the moment, it was my first Moto device and the last one, maybee the last android...
I hoped you signed the petition floating around in here!!
Hay can you send it too me I would love to have a second Xoom. I see your selling it, oh well. Sounded like you should throw it in the garbage as bad as it is.
Edit:
My device works perfect I rarely if ever get FCs. My ***** is LTE. I understand that I am one of the very, very few whos device works perfectly. I don't know maybe its the user.

You're also in the US. Where we got the 3.1 update. So ours is working better than theirs.

I knew you were going to take it that way because that's how people think. I was referring to me overclocking, unlocking and rooting. Having a device that I can play with and not one locked down. Thats what I mean by the user.
Let me ask you this:
Do you have an Android phone?
Let me also add this:
If you would have said that you were going to a Transformer or a HTC View then I would have thought it was the device. Instead you said a iPad which means its the operating system and using the device that you don't like. Maybe your Xoom is defective. Did you try getting it replaced?

Yes I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and its amazing. I also had a Dell Streak 5 and a Galaxy Tab (original) so am very used to the Android OS. I did not say I was getting an Ipad, I said my missus wants me to get one because she feels its the best available 10" finished tablet solution at the moment....
I have considered the Asus Transformer but I need 3G and a 3G version is not available yet. The Galaxy 10.1 is also not yet available in the UK. I do not feel confident rooting and installing custom ROM's and to be honest I shouldn't have to go down this route to get a working product, especially one which cost me £580

Ya it sucks that other country versions of the Xoom suck so bad that is lame. We don't do apple in our house as a matter of fact we don't even speak of it. Also I did not root to fix problems I root so I can overclock and backup my device. So basically you bring that baby home turn it on and its FC city, wow.
If you like your Xoom so much why havent you done what lots of others have done, Root it and Load the US Version, I have to say though its still not perfect.. There are no good Office apps out there so its far from being capable of being used for business. Facebook App force closes quite regularly, the mail app looks a bit mickey mouse and basic. What I wouldnt give for Thunderbird and Open Office on it!!!..
Non-US Xoom is not Google Experience device, thats what I read in many Xoom forum posts. So, thats why you dont get update directly from Google. I read from Moto forums that it will be updated in couple of months.
Granted, thats not good enough. Couple of months is way too long.

If i'd known on the 2nd May that it's wasn't a GED and updates would be this slow, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. I don't think anyone knew at that point!
People keep telling me to root and flash US ROM, but as well as losing my 3g and voiding my warranty, I'm not sure I want to risk it and why should I?

I'd be tempted to mention your dissatisfaction on the Motorola Facebook page too. Perhaps a little naming and shaming will push them a little harder, other than that, it may give other prospective European customers a little insight into the current support situation?
http://www.facebook.com/motorolaeurope
hey you guys I just popped in here from the transformer forum, I would think that google is not at fault with OTA updates only the state of 3.1 at the moment. my transformer was on 3.0 when it arrived on the first of June, and an update was available straight away. Ordered in the UK and shipped to spain. Same with my desire HD quickly updated to gingerbread. Its a Moto Thing.
Just glad Asus have gone down the same route as HTC, Great design and features just need the bugs in honeycomb ironing out now.
Just done mine this afternoon. Now on 3.1 with SD card support and 3G. Like you say though, shame I had to void my warranty in order to get a working device....
It really is a shame that moto has gone down this route of misleading its customers. I have owned a few android devices over the past 2 years from different manufacturers ; however the Xoom is my first device from moto and will most definitely be the last one from them.
The only reason that the US Xoom has gotten the 3.1 update (which isn't perfect, but addresses many of the 3.0 glitches) is because its backed by Google (GED)
Many many people outside the US have bought the Xoom fully expecting it to be a GED and rightfully so. Seems that once moto got their money the relationship was promptly ended.
I'm not sure if this applies to you, but over here, the Xoom does NOT come with the Google logo on the back.. this seems to be the indicator as to whether or not its a GE.

Wanting an A500 and need some help.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!
the A500 is actually the best purchase I've made this year. It pretty much replaced my laptop as my couchside connection to the web.
Do you have the 16gb or 32?

I think the worst thing you could ever do is to go to a dedicated forum for a product you know little about and ask questions like, "...worth it?" or "... I know its[sic] not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs" and the ever popular but never informative "I am thinking about picking up one of these <insert product here>"
You really won't get much more than biased responses. The best thing you can do is go everywhere else that isn't dedicated to the product you're looking to research *with* your needs in tow and read read read what other people have to say - their issues, the ups and downs - without jumping, waving your hands around and pointing at yourself.
newegg.com, google.com, youtube.com, bestbuy.com etc etc are a good place for you to poke around and read unaided, real-world, replies and topics on issues, questions, comparisons etc.
While this is not by any means ideal for the most part, those who own a product will love it and those who don't will say it's **** - the point is, you should be trying to mitigate that bias by reading up in places that would be less likely to have biased information. Formulate your own opinion based on your needs and what you read [time and time again - which you'll only know if you read read read in a variety of different places] then come back when you have all your specific questions or concerns to get some clarity.

Which "other high end tabs" do you have in mind? A500 is comparable to every single one of them and actually it comes on top considering connectivity, build quality, etc. Two days ago I bought my wife an ipad2 and she spends half the time at the tablet and the other half at her laptop. I spend 90% of my free time on the tablet and 10% on my laptop. The only thing that ipad has better is the colours of the screen. The white is pretty close to the real white while on the A500 its cooler than it should be. Other than that all I'm hearing these days is "oh, I can't see the pictures on the usb memory stick, right?", "So I need to convert the videos I have to watch them, right?" and my favorite "that stupid iTunes..."
Compared to the Android tablets currently on the market, the Iconia gives more than any of them can.

Here is the #1 thing that I like about the A500: The full size USB port! It is one of the only ones that has it. You can plug in hard drives, usb drives, game controllers etc directly into the tablet. Not many others can do that.
One thing that people give grief to the A500 on is the screen. People think that just because it isn't an IPS panel then it is no good. In my opinion the screen looks great!

My recommendation is to wait a while.
Why?
1. The tablet isn't going anywhere in the next few months and will only get cheaper.
2. The "2s" will be coming early next year - Xoom 2, Transformer 2, Iconia 2? etc. not to mention a slew of other options containing newer/faster/better CPUs at possibly a similar price point hitting the market soon.
3. ICS is out and very, very soon we'll see which tablets are updated the fastest. If you wait just a while longer, you may be able to pick something up at a similar pricepoint with ICS on there initially.
At this point, there's no rush and you'll be better off waiting a bit to see if something nicer comes along. Now granted, something nicer will always come along and it never pays to KEEP waiting. But at this point the Tegra 2 is aged and I think you need to give yourself just a bit more time since you can. Archos for example just released the G9 101 and while I don't see myself buying a tablet with less than 1GB of memory, I am certain vendors will be using alternative, newer dual core chips in their versions coming out in a while. Of course that's just me. I believe in "do unto others" and this is what I would have done if I was in the market for a tablet right now, I'd wait until at least Feb/March of 2012.
That being said, don't get me wrong...I love my A500 and I would surely have recommended it in the past few months. But right now we're on the cusp of a veritable barrage of devices running newer hardware. I wouldn't recommend buying any of the Tegra 2 tablets right now.

Lack of development

I'm disappointed that there isn't much development going on for the Thrive. I'm also curious as to why? I bought one after doing major comparison between all the tablets available and I chose this one because of the specs, size and of course, capabilities. My friends have other tablets, such as the Acer 500 and I rooted it last night for him and it's nowhere near the speed of my Thrive.
I guess I'll just have to wait it out but damn, I want a new ROM on this already. Just having it rooted isn't enough to take advantage of even a fraction of the capabilities this thing has.

I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of developers having the device. I think if I had one I would probably be putting something together - but I have the Transformer - and no time at the present.
There has been ROM development, just not here.

I was in the same boat so to say my first choice was the thrive I happily bought it after much consideration of other tablets on the market at the time .. once I got home I enjoyed the speed and the thrives native apps but I went to XDA to se what was popping and nothing lol a dead tablet on the development front.so I tried the Asus liked the screen but didn't want to pat $160 u.s. for USB and extra battery life so i bought my Iconia and ill tell ya what I freaking love it besides some problems with Gameloft apps but usb HDMI micro SD I'm happy and amazing veiwing angles!

Well I have the thrive and it is rooted and has a OC Kernel and Dalepl's stock rom, am I sorry that it does not have some great rom on it, NO it is quite functional and is twice the tablet of any Acer Iconia, and just to be clear I HAVE HAD a Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom and the Almighty Samsung and all lasted less than a week before returning them, have had my thrive since release and could not be more pleased, and all of the substandard tabs are gone!!!!
I waited in line on black Friday for the Asus transformer because it has a large development scene, but they ran out and I ended up with the Toshiba for $30 more. I've got to day, for what I paid, the Toshiba is cool, but I wish I could get some cyanogen on here.

same here. Love the size and Honeycomb. Have a Samsung galaxy tab 7" and wanted something bigger and newer. Made the mistake of upgrading to 3.2.1 and was hoping the great minds of XDA have figured out how to downgrade to root. Kind of disappointed on the development but maybe we weren't the only ones who went to buy the Transformer and ended up with the thrive. Only time will tell.
Don't know why this thing isn't more popular. Just got mine the other day. So far I love the fact that I can plug in the dongle from my computers wireless keyboard and an hdmi cable to my big screen tv, pair it to a wii remote and have at it. Absolutely awesome!

There is a lot more for it but not on this Forum, I would just say Google the thrive and the other forum will come up in search results and yes there is plenty of Development going on. I cannot put the forum's name here because they will just delete the name if not my complete post.
Yeah, I'm a recovering rom-flasher myself, and I was initially kind of bummed out at the fact that there are not dozens of choices for ROMs, but then I got to asking myself "Why?"
I have Cyanogen 7 on my HTC LEO, and I can flash a new version every week if I want, or if I get tired of that, there are many other ROMS I can choose from. But for the Tablet, I'm looking for a stable portable platform to read forums, e-books, maybe play a few games. The Thrive fills that bill, and the hardware is more versatile than most other tablets out there. I rooted the stock 3.1 ROM so I could use Titanium Backup and nmap, and I don't think I'll upgrade until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, if then. 3.2 seems to be mostly for 7" tablets so it doesn't interest me much.
I see that there are other ROMS on those "unmetnionable" forums, but I've learned over the years to trust the developers and forums at XDA so I don't really want to take a chance elsewhere.
That's my two cents' worth and if you don't agree, I applaud you - enjoy flashing whatever you can find - it's a lot of fun, and I will continue to do so on my HTC phone, but not on my tablet. Just my opinion.

Well then you will lose out because the Thrive on XDA will soon be dead and those of us on the other forum will have everything we want on our tablets and thank god that crap cyanogen is not on the thrive!!!!
Performance! But....
I have purchased two of these devices.... One 16G and one 8G. Both ate verymooth and perform very nicely.
Even though Im enjoying the units, I still believe that there should become level of focus on these units. Toshiba now has these units up to V3.3 and have things locked down tightly. Though I believe they did a nice job on the stock ROM, I still believe there should be a root option to admonisyer my personal device. I also believe that the collective brain trust of XDA could produce a ROM that shows the true capability of this hardware platform.
One of the coolest features of the 10.1 inch units is that it has a user replacable battery! How cool is that??
Im not a programmer and barely qualify as a script kiddie in this day of age. So like others on this forum, I have to wait for those with the knowledge and motivation to provide the future path and direction.

I don't see why not.
Can this be upgraded to ICS/JB?
I am sorely tempted by this deal. I have an HP Touchpad currently, but would like the better resolution and full functionality (camera) of a real Android tablet. I've been looking around online a bit and haven't determined if the 3G only Xoom can be upgraded to ICS or JB.
Can anybody give me some insight to this? I'm trying to decide if I should replace the Touchpad with this, which I currently have running ICS reasonably well, but I don't want to get a device that won't have enough dev support to get me to Jelly Bean at least. I see some threads in the development section here for some early JB builds and a CM9 RC, but I just want to be sure these will work on the 3G version, and not just the WiFi or 4G versions.
Thanks for any insight.
**EDIT**
I see in the development section some JB roms from Team EOS, but their roms seem to be for the EU 3G, US 4G and WiFi models only. Is the US 3G largely unsupported?

I see in the development section some JB roms from Team EOS, but their roms seem to be for the EU 3G, US 4G and WiFi models only. Is the US 3G largely unsupported?

I'm in the same boat. Have a Touchpad with CM 9 running.
I searched all over the damned place in here and can't seem to find an answer. about this.
Can we install the WiFi only version of ROMs (CM9 in particular) onto a Verizon 3G Xoom and have it work for everything EXCEPT the 3g? I could honestly care less about ever activating it on Verizonas long as WIFI works.
As far as I know you can install the wifi only version. It just doesn't include the 3G drivers.

I would really love to know for sure...it would be the difference between me ordering this or not.
I remember one of the team eos members saying that you could do that

Yeah you can, you're able to install a WiFi only (wingray) onto any xoom, whether euro, us 3g, us 4g. But the respective data won't work! It is possible, thought I'd help clarify that for you guys.
Thanks!
BOUGHT A XOOM!
Thanks a lot. Just bought a Xoom. Looking forward to selling off the Touchpad and having a fully functional tablet once and for all. Not to slight the great devs who made my Touchpad so much more usable than it was with WebOS. Can't wait for Jelly Bean.

I saw this and I'm tempted. My big question is if I can use it as a WiFi only one even if it's a Verizon branded one.

that is how I use mine. just turn airplane mode on so your tablet is not constantly looking for a mobile data signal and you will be golden!
I've ordered one of these as well. I'm also coming from the Touchpad.

For those of you that missed out on this deal, you can get a similar deal via icemonkey. It's $20 more, but if you're dying for this tablet, you can still get it quite cheap:

Has anybody's order shipped yet? Mine hasn't had any activity since I made the purchase last week.

My order is still sitting there "open" as well.
(Edit: I just checked and it shipped late last night and should be here tomorrow! Woo HOO!)

Yeah mine has shipped and should arrive tomorrow as well. Can't wait. Too bad the case I ordered for it won't be here for another week.
Got mine today. No USB charging. WTF
Edit: nvrmnd. read about how the USB doesn't provide enough power. makes sense.

I remember being upset about this at first last year. Seemed like just a way to get more money for proprietary chargers.
I think USB power could have been done if they had really wanted to (look at the Xoom 2, more battery and uses USB charging), but it would take forever. I can get 10-12 hours of moderate-heavy use on my Xoom on a single charge that takes less than an hour. That is pretty damn sweet.
For those still waiting...
It shipped with honeycomb. SOon after boot, using wifi only, it said I had an updated, which I applied. After reboot it said there was another update (ICS), which I also applied.
So using the OTA updates, you can get to ICS without an issue and still use the 3g Connection. I rooted that with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
Then backed up.
I have installed the EOS JB Wingman ROM for the hell of it and all seems to be working great.

My XOOM - still going strong!!

Hey all. So I love my Xoom but have had to purchase another unnamed tablet with 3G capabilities so for the last few months my 2 sons (3 & 5 years old) have been using the table for games and interactive books at bedtime. Of course they love it too now, but didn't realise how easy it is to use these things. The play the games and read the books without my help "daddy go away!!". They also love clouds and sheep and send me pictures they take of the game!!
I know ppl ***** and moan about the lack of updates for devices but for a device I really enjoyed but couldn't get over how bad Honeycomb was, well it's come a long way and is standing the test of time. I don't think I'll ever get rid of this device.

You should try JB from dream chech this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997434
I rooted mine and have the latest JB on it. I can't believe I waited so long to root it!!! My Xoom is still going strong, but I noticed the battery doesn't last as long. I still get days of use out of it.
my xoom is not really doing well, ... but i will keep it untill it is really bricked XD update update and update to the latest roms!
I was a Verizon Xoom owner, then sold mine to finance the purchase of a Nexus 10. However, I am now a Verizon Xoom owner yet again. A while back, a client had bought my company a Xoom to test our web development work on because their field agents all used Xooms out in the field. Well, they upgraded to Galaxy Note 10.1s, which means they bought my company one for testing. With no use for the Xoom, my boss was nice enough to give it to me.
I have to say that, even though Google and Verizon have yet to get a Jelly Bean update out for the CDMA/LTE model, ICS runs fine on it for now. Plus, did I mention how much I missed having a tablet with a cellular connection? I have a Nexus 7 and 10, and though I love them to pieces, the only way to use them while I'm out is to kill my phone battery by enabling WiFi hotspot. The Xoom costs me $10/mo to have on my shared data pool on Verizon. I can deal with that. It's worth it to have the connectivity anywhere and everywhere. It's also nice that the Xoom is a little older now because the official accessories are dirt cheap now. I was able to pick up the OEM Motorola OTG cable (dubbed the Xoom Camera Connection Kit), standard dock, and portfolio case on eBay, all brand new, for a combined $30 bucks after shipping. That's a win.
I agree with the comment above that owning a Xoom is like owning a classic car. It's still plenty fast for everything I would do while out and about, plus the thing is built like a brick $h1thouse. If anyone ever breaks into your house, you can beat them over the head with your Xoom to knock them out, then use it to post about the incident on Twitter while you wait for the cops.
I'm glad to have the Xoom back in my arsenal, if only for the times when I'm out and about and want a cell connection without having to kill my phone battery. I only buy Nexus devices because I like the stock, unfettered Android experience and getting updates from Google. As we all know, the Xoom is functionally a Nexus in everything but its name. So...if you want a Nexus tablet with a cell connection on Verizon, the Xoom is still your only choice.
P.S. Vegas currently has the over/under on the 4.1.2/JZO54K Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Xoom at June 1 (to commemorate the one-year anniversary of its last update, the one to ICS). I'm taking the under, but only by a week or so.

Been using my Xoom every day for over a year and it's totally awesome. I've had zero problems since i bought it. I'm still using it with CM10 because CM10.1 just seems a little slower and I dont use multiple users. I'm totally happy that when I wanted to buy the Galaxy tab, it was sold out and I got the Xoom instead.
The only reason why i would consider an upgrade would be because i like higher dpi screens. In every other way the Xoom is superb.
My xoom (wi-fi only) still rocks on and is wonderful as well. It gets used every day and regularly lasts over half the week on a single charge, watching netflix for an hour or two most nights. I'm probably the freak of the bunch, running complete stock and being utterly satisfied with it. I mostly keep up with the forums here because of looking for things on my other android device (Epic 4g, i717 Note, Moment) histories and figured I might as well bookmark the Xoom too.
In any case, yay Xoom! I love my choice of tablet :]

No shame in stock, man. Check my signature. All five of my devices are bone stock. haha That Android 4.1.2/JZO54K ROM runs like a champ on the Xoom. Compared to ICS, Jelly Bean made the Xoom feel like a brand new tablet. All of us on Verizon are still waiting, but it'll show up eventually.
I feel like owning new device each time I try new ROM and its amazing xoom still gets really nice support, I've been using it for two years and its brilliant.
Best of luck to happy xoom users!

best ROM
could someone show me which ROM is the best at battery and gaming? I'm a bit confuse of it's GPU on EOS and CM10.1 Or does this belong to the hardware?
EOS Rom
I am very happy with the EOS rom:good:
Mine is still going strong, with a lag here, a lag there...
I'll solve it by flashing a Custom ROM on it since it's running official ICS...

I've also had my Xoom for a number of years, I GEDified it when 4.1.2 was first available and left in untouched until very recently. It's now rooted running dreamcwli's 4.2.2 rom which has given the device a new lease of life.
