So I called T-Mobile today because they have promotional 4G rate plans right now. And I gave T-Mobile my IEMI number and according to their systems the nexus one qualify for the upgrade to their 4G network. I upgraded to it for an additional $5 dollars a month. Now to my knowledge the nexus one was not built to handle 4G band speeds but I did notice a major speed boost on my device. Maybe not a full 4G experience but definitely feels like my 3G is on steroids. Btw I'm on the EVEN MORE PLUS PLAN.
That would be awesome...I thought you would need a new radio to get it. What radio version are you using? Anyhow, do post up some Speedtest results!
i was wondering about this because HSPA+ is just a newer version of what Tmo 3G phones use, afaik there is no change in the bands they use to communicate and it really should just be as simple as flashing a new radio to a phone to get it to be HSPA+ (aka 3.5G aka T-mobile 4G)
now i doubt that a provider will be willing to update their current phones because they want you to buy a new phone that is "for their 4G" network. its possible though that the Korean radios that have leaked may have this support in them and might explain why your seeing a speed increase.
something else you can do is go into settings>about phone>status> check mobile network type to see if it says HSDPA or HSPA+
there is also another more advanced screen that you can check but i forgot the silly #*#* code you put into access it but i know if you install the app anycut you can make a shortcut to the screen as well
with anycut just make a shortcut for "phone info" to pull up the more advanced screen.
I'm getting 2.87MBps down, and 1.30MBps up. And no I didn't do any radio update. I just told the T-Mobile I wanna switch over to 4G and they said ok and switched me over for an extra five dollars a month.

that's not HSPA+ speeds, HSPA+ speed varies from the same as HSDPA to twice as fast.
http://www.tested.com/forums/phones/4/tested-t-mobiles-hspa-network-vs-traditional-3g/3943/
in this test the N1 maxed out at 2.41MBit down and the G2 never went under 3.32Mbit down and topped out at 8.16Mbit down.

that is very good for 3G but uncommon and probably about as fast as you will ever see on HSDPA.
here in the east SF Bay area i usually get about 1.0 Mbit down on my N1 on T-mobile but the speed i see varies and depends highly on local network traffic and what my signal strength is at
Keep in mind that I'm in the subberbs

Check the specs, n1 will only Max at 7.2 dl 2.0 ul, anything higher is bull
http://www.htc.com/www/product/nexusone/specification.html
N1 here and I had the original data plan that cost 24.99/mo. Old family plan I had for ages since I had the SE Xperia X1, which I still have but do not use .
I have the 3G+ speeds ever since I started using the CM roms, but I never "upgraded" the data plan for faster speed.
How much were you paying beforehand if I may ask? And was it a data plan as well?
I don't think the Nexus can handle the same speeds as the G2 or the new Mytouch 4G.
At work someone has the Mytouch 4G and we did speed test with both phone, mine is on the latest Korean radio and he's download speed was always double than my Nexus.
So again I don't think is possible.
Never claimed to be on HSPA+

I didn't implied you lie, what I say is they are wrong, and it's sad because I'd love to have 4G in the nexus.
I dont really understand 3g and 4g speeds, but isnt the latency more important? I dont think 3mb vs 10mb will make a huge difference on a phone, it doesnt on my desktop connection, but isnt the biggest hurdle the time to actually get the network to connect to the internet? From what i have noticed, the first website you access takes alot longer than the subsequent sites.

Depends on your usage...if you download files, then speed DOES matter, MUCH more than latency. If you simply browse, you do need a MINIMUM speed, but then latency is mucchhhh more important. I would consider 5mb a minimum speed for good browsing.
On computers, you CAN use faster speeds to access the pages faster by using pipelining...dun think phones have support for that though

Call them back and get back on the $20 preferred Android Internet plan. They misinformed you. The data plan you are on does not determine the data speed you see. There are a ton of people on HowardForums with old grandfathered $5.99 T-Zones plans and $9.99 web2go data plans getting faster speeds then what you are seeing.
You are wasting your money with any plan more expensive then the $20 preferred Android Internet plan and if you can get on a cheaper one it will work exactly the same.
It's very possible that T-mobile is throttling accounts now that they can offer faster overall speeds.
It could be a (****ty-consumer wise) way to exploit the 4g (mis)nomer.
I can tell you this I am a T-mobile RSA and I am not sure what the extra $5 amonth the guy did but there is no 4g data plan. Every Android data plan i use in the store is the same plan I give ppl on every android phone T-Mobile sells. There is no 3G or 4G plan. Every plan is the same unless you are looking at the 200mb, 2gb, unlimited plan. I would say call 611 and tell them to change it back and run speed test again. T-Mobile in the soon to be future is moving to a 3 tier data plan. By this I mean they are going to let you pick a 200mb, 2gb, and unlimited data rate plan. Every plan is going to have the same speeds but limit you to what you can download before you are throttled or start to see overages. Call and get your money back.

Same thing he said. I'm a TMobile CSR and whoever you were speaking with was trying to get a 5.00 bump on there add ons. No difference between EDGE data plans/3G data plan/4G(HSPA+) data plans. People that use the Iphone on our network pay the same 25 or 30 that people do that have 3G devices.

I am on T-mobile USA. I use a UK HD2. Therefore, I do not have 3G frequencies. I am on Web2Go (unlimited Data), however, my speeds are limited to 2G edge. It's painfully slow.
Is data speeds a cause by Android or my carrier's speeds?
Can Web2Go be any faster if, say, I had a US HD2 (assuming t-mobile doesn't know I have a smartphone under Web2Go)??? What speeds will I be surfing the web? 3G 4G?
Thanks!
Your post confuses me, but I think this may be the answer you're looking for.
Edge (which is actually 2.5G) has a max download limit of about 25kB/s, that's a technical limitation and cannot be bypassed. Android has got nothing to do with this. You also can't softmod your phone to receive TMO's 3G frequencies, if you really want it you're gonna need a TMO supported HD2. 4G is out of question, but I've heard their 3G network is pretty damn quick. (Couple of megabits/sec download, should suffice methinks!)

thank you. that was informative.
But my question is if my HD2 was able to pick up 3G or 4G (hspa+), will my download speeds be limited to my phone's frequencies or limited to the data plan I have, which is the $9.99 Web2Go?
it is a hardware limitation. your UK hd2 does not support t-mobile's 3G bands. therefore, you will not get 3G speeds from t-mobile.
t-mobile does not implement a speed limit on their data plans; their grandfathered plans ranging from $3 data plans go just as fast as the current $30 data plans.*
I have a T-MOUS branded HD2 with the $10 web2go plan, using internet2.voicestream.com APN. I cannot get T-Mob's HSPDA+ (4G) because it's hardware limitation, I believe only the G2 and Mytouch 4G are capable of HSPDA+ on T-Mobile.
My HD2 with Android gets HSPDA (3.5G) just fine. The speeds vary tremendously depending on my location. There's one particular spot in my town where I ran a several speedtests and consistently got 3.2 Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload. But for most locations, I get only around 1.2Mbps download and 1.4Mbps upload. And inside my house, where's mainly a deadzone for data, I only get Edge which is around 200Kbps download and 350Kbps upload.
My HD2 is the same way. I used to get 3Mbps, but one day I lost 3G for a day, the next day it came on and was slow. I would get 0.43Mbps on speed test. It would never go above 1Mbps, unless I go 3 blocks away from my home, I would get up to 5Mbps. Back at my house it would go back to 0.06Mbps-1Mbps. This has been happening for ever since OCT 26 2010.
From OCT 26 to now I have been using Tmobile Data as my ISP. Thought since they have a very fast network that can go up to 21Mbps and only at $25 I will go and get the USB PC stick, but from what has been happening I decided to remove the data plan from my phone because it was worthless and too slow to even watch videos. They have told me that their are issues in some states were you may not even get any data or voice. But its taking them too long to fix. I'm gonna wait about 2 months before I go back, hopefully they have the issue resolved.

OMG! really?
So I can get 4G speeds with the G2 on the grandfather $5.99 Web2Go Plan?
What is stopping me from getting a G2 off contract and popping my SIM (which currently have Web2Go) into the phone?

Buying the G2 off contract, probably?
In all honesty, I think this 4G is way overrated. HSPA supports up to 14mbps, that's almost 2 megabytes per second. That's about the max speed I get with my broadband connection at home.
I can't even tell the difference between surfing on WiFi or 3G, because the browser is obviously the bottleneck which slows things down.

All of T-Mob's Android phones are locked by IMEI, so I don't think your data plan will not work. When you try to use data, it'll say you have to upgrade your data plan.

this question may come across a bit noobish but I'm using the UK HD2 on Tmob UK and getting 3G speeds so I'm unable to understand what you mean by it's a hardware limitation of the HD2 UK to get 3G speeds. Unless Tmob US works differently?

Uhu, tmous has its own 3g frequency (frequencies actually).
I have simple mobile now, its awesome for the price and prepay, plus they boast about bring your own phone, so its good. But i only get 115k download speed when testing with the speedtest.net app. I get 200 - 300k upload. It is not displaying 1x mode, it says, 3G and H when i have it on mobile, not 1x or E.
SO, the question is is this something I'm doing, or not doing, that I get such bad speeds?
Its pretty good for the price, $40/mo. unlimited 3G, $60/mo. for unlimited 4G, but its not available in my area for 4G yet...
Is this a normal speed for this carrier? I used to have att gophone prepay but that sucked. Also... simple mobile is tmobile and to set it up you just have to select the apn from the settings once the sim's unlocked. Its the absolute simplest set up there is. But I just wish i could do better speeds... I'm wondering if this is normal for my phone or what. thanks
I also use Simple Mobile. Their $40 unlimited 3G plan is capped around 120kbps on the download. You'll actually get faster speeds on EDGE. The only way to get actual 3G+ speeds with Simple Mobile is to get the $60 4G plan. I think calling the $40 plan 3G is a scam, but it's still not that bad of a price at $60/month.
thanks for that bit of knowledge. well, looks like i'm going to upgrade then. I will be pleased. Then maybe one day I'll wake up and it will be on 4G.
switched to 2g only, edge, and I'll be darned, its faster. 156kbps, 215 upload. But its kinda sticky, what i mean is it will go 156 then drop off, then pick back up again. But I suppose that this might work. I just want it for jango music app, to stream music while i drive. NICE!
Just would like to add that if your phone displayed H at some point, that means 4G speed is available in your area. Upgrade your plan and never look back lol

As I'm sure you can understand, I am quite a bit excited!
Now, it has displayed the HSDPA+ icon, (H) and it displays 3G icon. (CM7)
I used to have t-mobile 4G service, but they said it was not available in my area. I never saw a 4G icon, but i used to see H all the time.
Now, I do see an H, and a 3G, they flash back and forth. I seem to remember it staying solid on H and very rarely would I see a 3G icon, but its been a while since I had my tmobile service turned up.
But when i use the net, it does the H icon with both arrows sending and receiving. At any rate, I've decided to go ahead and pay for the $60/mo plan and unlock my speeds. At that price, it just can't be beat. Its so reasonable and they are so pleasant and support you hacking ur own phones. i'm so happy i found these fellaz. I am even signing up with their dealer program.
EDIT: Oh and I just wanted to add that they even have website instructions to change your APN settings... even though they come preloaded and all you have to do is select it from the settings menu. They will even walk you through it. Not sure about if they will help you root and unlock sim, but you can always ask.
BS
Well, after having simple mobile for the second month, and this is only the first month having the 4g (aka $60 plan).
It caps at 2GB of data then you are limited to 125Kbps max download. I called and they said the limit was 7GB. But I sware to you, same ROM's that worked dropped off the speed and they told me it was my phone... Now this is all normal, but they didnt even troubleshoot me at all, just told me it was my phone, i said it has the same problem with other phones, and my phone works on other sim cards at full speed. (so I guess they think my phone broke in a way where after 2GB it just couldnt get over the 125KBPS mark.)
So i go to look at t-mobile's homepage, cause thats who simple is, and low and behold for $60 you get unlimited all except after 2GB you get 3g Speeds... its all there in month by month plans on t-mobile's website. What a coincidence!!! I was told there was no limits at all any way. WHAT A LIE!
So all simple does is allow you to use a phone that t-mobile might have banned due to bad ESN or IMSI or w/e (serial number) and they get money for reselling t-mo junk.
So you only get 2gb of 4G then you will be limit to 125KBPS not even real 3g. They will lie to you and hang up, no refunds, no credits, no working with you.
They really made me mad how they told me I was downloading too much, they tried to put the blame on me. I asked them how much is too much!? and got real mad at that and they dropped that spiel quick. 2GB is nothing. Especially when you stream music in your car, the whole reason i have the thing. At 125KBPS i cant listen to a song in last.fm without it having to buffer for 5 minutes.... thats 2 songs in one buffer.
So I ended up asking for a credit or refund, they laughed (rude) and said they dont do refunds. I told them my credit card company does disputes. After winning the last 4 disputes against these lying cell companies, and with my proof, I guarantee they will do THIS refund!
I say just get tmobile prepaid. 60$ unlimited everything with 4g speeds up to 2gb and 70$ 4g speeds up to 5gb

try upateing radio to .25 in ezterrys 2708+ thread
also if you look for his ezgingerbread rom there is a file there you can flash in recovery to update gprs from 10 to 12 that helps some to get faster speeds.
also if you go into dialer and type

you can run some tests and change how your radio

Back when my G1 was new, it was much faster. It slowed (including bandwidth speeds) over time with each OTA it got. I imagine it is like a 486 PC which was super fast with Windows 3.1, then slower with 95, and even slower with 98. To prove this point, try flashing DREAMING.nbh and going back to Android 1.0 RC29 and see what the speed is. My wife still loves her G1, and with only a few apps on it, 1.6 crawls. My Nexus S has also slowed a lot since going from 2.3 to 4.0.x to 4.1.1.
The speedtest app was too unreliable for me. My Nexus S on 2.3 barely did 5 MB/s on wifi, while I got 15 MB/s in the browser using flash (same as my PC). I can confirm the 15 was correct from the bandwidth graphs on my router which has DD-WRT firmware.
I'll preface the description of my situation with the following question. Is it actually possible that tethering damaged my cellular antennas as described below? Or do you think the source of my problem is software rather than hardware? If that is the case can anyone offer solutions?
I attempted to use the tethering function once with moderate success (it was slow but worked). Eventually I lost the connection and was unable to regain it so I turned off tethering. For the first few days afterwards my phone would only pick up GSM/GPRS in areas where I previously had full access to HSPA+.
Eventually, my N4 started to show an HSPA+ signal again but was performing much slower than before. The speed problem persists and my phone commonly suffers from long delays between detection of data networks and actually gaining access.
I bought my N4 through the Play store so it has bluetooth and wifi data tether available out of the box.
I use it on T-Mobile's monthly unlimited plan (speed caps after 5gb) and have never even come close to hitting the usage ceiling so I know it isn't that.

DUDE ! i know that feel ! , i tethered my phone this morning and it was SUPER slow 30 KBps then i went to school and i ran a couple speed tests still stuck/capped at 30 , i checked right now too still stuck at 30 KBps even after a reboot , toggling on and off airplane mode , i think T-mobile will automatically throttle anybody who tethers without having a tether plan. im on Simple Mobile , but its just a MVNO under T-mobile.
this speed is rediculous , my edge is at 20 KBps and Hsdpa is at 30 KBps .

Well I guess that could explain it. I thought it had been at least a billing cycle since then but I could be wrong. Or T-Mobile could be taking their sweet time switching off the throttling. Thanks for the insight.
T-Mobile doesn't throttle like that, there must be another issue. If you get caught tethering, they just redirect you to a page to sign up for a tethering plan.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Even if you were throttled, you would still connect to HSPA+ the same as before (not EDGE). Throttling is not done by the cell tower, but with TCP/IP networking. Depending on you location, they may be working on the cell site. PCS HSPA refarm and AWS LTE deployment are two reasons that come to mind.
not sure what my issue could be then , still getting slow HSPA+ speeds , just checked right now 3/4 Bars anddd it is for sure HSPA+ i can see the little + next the the H , anyways , 31.2 KB/s looks like i made an improvement by 1.2 KB/s , thats a start lol
EDIT: if anyone was wondering the upload speed was always in the "Teens" , my upload this time was 19.6 KB/s and goes to as low as 13 KB/s

The OP's issue was connecting to HSPA, while yours is most likely bandwidth limiting and QoS. As you are on a MVNO, this is more difficult to troubleshoot. I would check your APN settings are correct, then call customer support and confirm they are throttling you.
Their policy on tethering is different than T-Mobile. I have T-Mobile post paid and can tether all 2.5 GB of my data, while unlimited data plan that is $10 more than mine can only tether 500 MB a month. Ready SIM is a MVNO that allows tethering, but cuts data off after the hard data cap.

i called those bastards they said "everything looks good on their side" and yeah i think its probally QoS , i mean , i've heard that T-mobile will give their users priority on HSPA over prepaid users , but even at this time ? its 1AM at the moment in my time zone and i just checked , 30.1 KB/s , so weird, but whatever. goodluck OP with figuring out your problem :good:
EDIT: LOL , sorry Spookytunes , just realized we're in the same time zone, i've met too many international people on xda

I look into several MVNO's and found PTel users were the most happy. Some MVNO's have hidden throttle caps (like 100MB per day).
I stayed with TMO, as the new plans dropped the cost on 2 lines to less than the MVNO's and having the same account for 12 years now (aka Voice Stream) has it's perks. My speeds are 15 Mbps x 2 Mbps, so if it ain't broke

T-Mobile doesn't throttle like that, there must be another issue. If you get caught tethering, they just redirect you to a page to sign up for a tethering plan.

WHAT!?!?! LOL that's ridiculous, how you guys let TMobile scam you that way?... here you can use the data the way you want, after all you are paying for it.

DUDE ! i know that feel ! , i tethered my phone this morning and it was SUPER slow 30 KBps then i went to school and i ran a couple speed tests still stuck/capped at 30 , i checked right now too still stuck at 30 KBps even after a reboot , toggling on and off airplane mode , i think T-mobile will automatically throttle anybody who tethers without having a tether plan. im on Simple Mobile , but its just a MVNO under T-mobile.
this speed is rediculous , my edge is at 20 KBps and Hsdpa is at 30 KBps .
*btw using KiloBytes not Kilobits*

Yeah, if you're on Simple Mobile and you're tethering then they'll either throttle you or straight up disconnect your service. Tethering with Simple Mobile is against their terms and conditions. That's probably what's happening to you now. I'm with them too and I'm in the same boat as you. Except that I wasn't tethering I just passed their data cap by using google music.

Carriers here still offer "Unlimited Data" plans. All newer data plans now include some tethering.
Even the free 500MB plan allows for 500MB of tethering.

Its not a scam, T-Mobile offers plans with and without tethering, you can chose which one makes the most sense for your needs.
