Does anyone else experience this or have any solutions I can try. I'm getting about 0.12 kbps on "3G" and only 2mb on wifi sitting right next to my router with Bright house Road Runner Turbo. My PC gets about 20mbps. So what gives? Is this just a low data speed phone or is something not right? Here are the specs:
Android 2.2.3
Radio-2.22.27.08
Kernel-ezterry v1.5.1f
ROM-DREAMteam Froyo v2.0.0
try upateing radio to .25 in ezterrys 2708+ thread
also if you look for his ezgingerbread rom there is a file there you can flash in recovery to update gprs from 10 to 12 that helps some to get faster speeds.
also if you go into dialer and type
*#*#4636#*#*
you can run some tests and change how your radio

Is there a list of these extra codes for the G! online somewhere?
maybe i never looked but im sure somewhere.
look up maybe "htc android phone dialer"
Thanks for the help. Did the gprs fix and the radio and still getting the exact same speeds. I called simple mobile and they refreshed the network blah blah. Same exact thing. I have 2 G1's on different accounts and they both top out at about 120kpbs. This sucks! I'm also getting full bars and 3G symbols.
well you may want to consider tmobile, not sure how awesome they are in your neck of the woods, but where i live i get reception where no one else does and i pay 170 after taxes for 4 plans unlimited. not too shabby out here

im dont have my g1 anymore and when i did i never had a sim in it, but upon looking at simple mobile's web site under approved phones, it says this:

If your phone says it is a 3G phone but it does not support the 1700mhz band, it will operate at 2G (EDGE) speeds on our network.

Yes. A G1 is a T-Mobile phone, and runs 3G on the 1700 band. Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile sub.

well if you have the simple mobile $40 plan, it limits speeds to 128 kbps, if you have the $60 plan then you have a problem.

I never really saw speeds much above 120k. Might just be a phone / processor limitation.

Back when my G1 was new, it was much faster. It slowed (including bandwidth speeds) over time with each OTA it got. I imagine it is like a 486 PC which was super fast with Windows 3.1, then slower with 95, and even slower with 98. To prove this point, try flashing DREAMING.nbh and going back to Android 1.0 RC29 and see what the speed is. My wife still loves her G1, and with only a few apps on it, 1.6 crawls. My Nexus S has also slowed a lot since going from 2.3 to 4.0.x to 4.1.1.
The speedtest app was too unreliable for me. My Nexus S on 2.3 barely did 5 MB/s on wifi, while I got 15 MB/s in the browser using flash (same as my PC). I can confirm the 15 was correct from the bandwidth graphs on my router which has DD-WRT firmware.

Well 3g has always been slow about my area but T-Mobile just opened up HSPA+ in my town but I still get crappy speeds. I just ran a test right now with the speedtest.net app and the results are 0.23mbps d/l - 0.34mbps u/l with full bars of 3g. I think the best I have every seen was 0.96mbps d/l - 1.03 u/l.
I'm running CM6.1 nightly and was running froyo radio but changed to the new Korea radio to see if it helped but nothing. A while back while driving through Philly I hit 5.08mbps d/l - 2.88mbps u/l on the HSPA+ network.
I have played around with the build.prop and just can't find a setting for the speeds I "think" I should be getting. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about going back to OTA Froyo from Google to see if that helps.
It seems to me it depends on where I am at, at home I get decent speeds, at my dads which is like 5 miles away I barely get edge, St work speeds are ok, and my friends house I have crazy awesome speed...T-Mobile signal strength is some what lacking depending on your location...inside of a building I could get edge, but if I go outside I get full 3g...

Well I contacted T-Mobile an apparently I am on the "Smart Phone Data Plan" and should be on the "Android Data Plan". I didn't know there was a difference but they said there was and to give it 3 hours and it should help with the speeds. I personally doubt it since people are getting great speeds from Web2Go and t-zone plans.
They also suggested I upgrade (for free) my sim card to a 3G(UICC) SIM card. So I guess I am heading to T-Mobile after work to upgrade.
Again I doubt any of this will fix my issues as I have hit 5.08mbps in Philly with this sim card and data plan.
It's their network I go through the same thing where I live

Ok well the results after 3 hours of waiting.. I just did a speed test and got... 0.09mbps d/l and 0.47mbps u/l average after 4 tests. I'm pretty sure I get better speeds on EDGE. Needless to say I am heading up to T-Mobile after work to have a talk with them. This is crazy. Why pay for a data plan if it's going to be this slow.
Wow look at these blazing speeds..
Maybe this will help

I was having speed issues also, so I edited my build.prop and now my speed is blazing fast. I'm a happy camper. I'm using evil's NXsense 1.26, before that cyanogenmod 6.1 RC1, I was having serious market issues, I couldn't install or uninstall apps with cyanogen. I edited the build.prop and things improved but not much, I would have to keep canceling download, and then reboot to install. I edited build.prop on evil's NXsense, and did a couple of speed test, I didn't have to because I noticed improvement right away. I just wanted to see some numbers, so I took three, one indoors, outdoors and with wi-fi. It doesn't matter if I can get 4G speed I'm happy with what I got, I have copies if my edited build.prop, I'm not sure if I can post it without the devs consent, a respect thing, you know. It's like a real gray area, but if you want to try and see if it helps, PM me

If I remember correctly, they use essentially the same operating bands as T-Mobile (1700/2100 AWS), so your phone should be compatible with they SIM cards. In fact, they may even be using the same towers as T-Mobile.
However, might not be able to get HSPA+ speeds, but not sure since I haven't used them before.
Actually, it does get hspa. I am using the hd2 with the 2.2 froyo and it runs on close to 4g speeds and yes you can also use tethering and hotspot. great service!

Did you need to unlock the HD2 to work on Simple Mobile or did it just work. I have a HD2 with 2.2 but it is on T-mobile but I am thinking about switching to Simple Mobile.
Any help is greatly appreciated
My wife was recently deployed so we cancelled the mytouch 4g on tmo and they waved the $200 cancel. fee.
I have been reading on xda that several people use simple mobile with tmo phones, and their webpage says this phone is SUPPORTED. I called a local dealer today and was told that I did not have to UNLOCK the phone because its running on tmo when its on simple mobile.
He said people are NOT throttled unless they are tethering or downloading torrents/movies.
Do any of you use simple mobile? Specifically, do you use a mytouch 4g on simple mobile and would you recommend it. My understanding its rebranded tmo service.
I loved the mytouch 4g, but couldnt stomach the $83 a month. My current phone is a optimus v (sprint aka virgin for $60 a month unlimited everything) but why would I want to use this phone (which I can return as Ive had it less than 10 days, I have 30 days to return) when I have a 10x better phone my mytouch 4g...
Suggestions... comments? Complaints about simple mobile? Thanks!
Just a google search indicates that the throttling cap is being seen at the 2GB mark with Simply Wireless and that they throttle people who they find tethering or downloading torrents or movies.
On the phone, the only thing that shows up is H for 3G and 4G. It does differentiate it if you are rooted with CM7
So my phone doesn't have to be unlocked? Everytime i flash a new rom do i just set the Apn?

AFAIK you will get hsxpa but not hsxpa+
Hsxpa is faster than the 3g that most us carriers served up for years. Now its technically a moot point since hsxpa+ isnt 4g either and their all just enhancements on the 3g standard.

The Nexus One will never work on the HSPA+ network any faster than the regular HSPA network; the hardware isn't HSPA+ compatible.

I would be happy with a consistent 3.0mb. within a span of 3 miles I can go from 5mb to less than 1mb and lots of areas still are edge
last time i did a speed test maxed out at 2.8 Mbps down on Wind Mobile
and it was even less on Rogers / Fido, so i'm very happy
So finally pulled the trigger... TRUE 3g speed on this phone. I couldn't be any happier.
Only problem is T-Mobile network isn't the largest so I have a lot of edge network areas. When 3g is running its pretty darn quick though.

Thats awesome. I have been contemplating getting SIMple Mobile for use on my MT4G or G2, but, I have been thinking about getting a NS to use on SM.
Do any of the Visual Voicemail apps work on this (or any T-Mo phone) using SIMple Mobile? It is my understanding that any FlexPay or Pre-Paid providers cannot offer any type of Visual Voicemail services. I know, Google Voice would work ok, but I'm not happy with their UI, and other aspects of GV.
If any Visual Voicemail apps would work with SIMple Mobile, flawlessly, then I'm sold on both SM & NS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Just figured I would give you guys thinking of moving to Simple a heads up. Their "unlimited" data is capped at 1GB. There have been reports of them shutting down your service once you reach this and charging you for prepaid data to continue use. Do your research before you jump especially if you like to tether or do a lot of streaming.

I've read the same thing on HowardForums. Since it's prepaid, you can pay for the service but they can disconnect the data anytime they want during that month.
I'm paying $55.99 a month on a non-contract basis right now, gives me 500 minutes and unlimited data. For SMS I simply use Google Voice which is free. I use it as my primary number instead of the T-Mobile one. I don't know my T-Mobile number even.
So for $60 a month, seems like Simple Mobile is more expensive and its very likely that Simple Mobile's contract for data is rather expensive hence why they cap at 1gb of data. I wouldn't expect you to ever be allowed to go past that given that MVNO's make much less profit overall.
I considered it, but quickly abandoned the plan. If it was actually cheaper (for me) I'd be willing to try it.

Woah 1GB data cap? Seems like a plan that would be good for parents, grandparents, or busy businesspeople who don't have the time/desire to do anything but light data use.
Glad you mentioned this, I was actually thinking of trying out the service.
Seems the 3g speeds are horable just like the inspire i just got. On 318 with the H icon speeds were alot better, infact i got faster upload on 3g than i did on uverse wifi.
Anyone else notice? Anything we can look into to fix this problem?
Dunno, I just fired off 2.53/1.17Mbit on ATT 3g. I've seen it faster (3+Mbit).
Yeah I'm getting great speeds too (on 318), and it has been tested that ATT is faster.
I'm not sure about the update, but ATT must be doing something not to good on their 2.2 update. (something they do to all of their updates?)
What are you guys using to test your speeds?
I've noticed in my neck of the woods, the speed varies depending on the tower.
Right now, at home, I'm getting 2-3 down and 1-2 up, but a couple towers in town I can barely squeak out 23k
Those of you getting over 300Kbps are all probably running build 318,319,322, or streakdroid which are all non at&t approved versions and basebands so at&t doesn't restrict them like it does with every other android phone that is locked to its network. Look at the inspire 4g speed issyes the matrix 4g speed issues they are all the same. That's why you don't use an at&t build on android cause they &@%$ it up.

your information is not entirely true, because when I was with t-mobile, I owned a nexus one which was also not locked into their network and I was seeing amazing speeds. So what are you talking about?
T-mobile's not allowed to customize the nexus phone. That's the entire point of them since they're entirely google stock.
And at&t does neuter baseband: the htc inspire 4g (basically a htc desire for at&t) cant do HSPUA because the network connection is restricted at either the cell tower or software level, but it's radio is capable of HSPUA.
But that's true for the the inspire, I don't know if they've neutered the streak. They can but don't know if they did. If it bothers you, you could try changing your baseband back to 318 while staying on 340. I don't know if this will work since noone's tried (streakdroid doesnt count since it works differently.)
This makes sense. My speeds have been massively worse with stock AT&T 2.2. I should note that it is NOT a reception issue. I live in NYC and get full bars almost everywhere I go.
I wanna know what you guys are using to test your speeds.

Considering I'm in new york city yes it is. How do I fix that?
I just read on AT&T's website that they consider 6Mb/s to be their 4G.
This means that our 4G devices will never be any faster than the iPhone 4 which supports up to 7.2Mb/s.
When I bought my Atrix I was under the assumption that they would eventually make use of the HSPA+ that the phone supports.
If the iPhone 4 is a 3G device then so is the Atrix.
Dear AT&T,
Thanks for lying and using trickery to attract customers. You suck.
PS hurry up and at least enable HSUPA
For all those that don't know, when they enable HSUPA this will not speed up our download connection speed, only the upload. So don't expect much.

Nvm. Just read it. Normal 3G is 7.2. Not HSPA+. HSPA+ has a maximum of 14mbps. 3g is 7.2

I was on the phone with AT&T Business today about other issues, and asked about the "4G".
The rep seemed very well informed, told me no towers in my area have dates assigned to them for upgrade to 4G yet, and that I still have some which are not even 3G capable. She also told me they are trying to get their "4G" to everyone by the end of the year, and the download speed is 20mbps. This was a lengthy conversation, much more involved than this short description, but it was very interesting to talk to a rep who actually new technical stuff.
Also read somewhere that enabling HSUPA will decrease latency which will also increase download speed. Not sure about that, though.

What the network is capable of delivering and the maximum speed the device supports are two different things. Both the Inspire and the Atrix have radios that can pull up to 14.4 Mbps if the network is able to provide it.

THe key word in that statement is "approximately" 6mpbs, it is just marketing. You will barely ever see the full speeds of "4g" due to the physics of networks.

Ha! Iphone 4? The 3gs is capable of 7.2. So all we got was a 3g phone with dual core that is locked down by att and moto. If I could pull 6 mbs on a regular I would be really happy with that. I avg about 700 kbps.

like sifon said... and i wouldn't even exactly call it a "marketing" term. It's just going the logical route. They say approximately 6Mbps.... because if they say something like "You will expect to see 10Mbps".... then imagine how many calls they're going to get from people complaining cause they're ONLY getting 6Mbps. And i don't even see why people are complaining about THAT! 6Mbps? on a PHONE?!? Just a few years ago, 5Mbps was the fastest broadband internet connection via cable in my area. 6Mbps is probably still faster than a lot of broadband connections here in the US (except for that one city that's going to be getting Google's gigabit fiber optic internet connection.... lucky f*ckers).
And yes... when they enable HSUPA, we will probably (see? if i said "will" here, me and anyone quoting me would probably get flamed like crazy if it didn't come to pass) see a lot lower latencies and higher download speeds than we currently are. As we all know, internet connections are a two way thing. If you can't get information TO the servers, you won't get it FROM them either.
I have 4g download speed in my neighborhood. (luck me! ) I pull 4 on average, and 5 rarely. 6 is a marketing speed. You will never see 6.
what are your upload speeds?

They're obviously .33 still. HSUPA isn't enabled on our phones yet. Not until we get that HSUPA update.
Also, can anyone confirm whether it's 14 Mbps, or 20/22? I keep seeing different numbers tossed around, and I can't be sure anymore.
my phone says H+ on it and 5 bars yet download speed says 500-600 kbps and upload is right around 100. on my wifi at home i have clearwire and i get 3 megs down 1 meg up and my phone says it gets the same 3md/1mu when its hooked up to wifi. do i neeg to go get a different sim card for my atrix? ATT told me i dont need one because the 4G network wont be out for another 6 months to a year (which is misinformation, we have it in seattle AFAIK). but even w/ 3G i should be pulling A LOT faster than that right?
i can pull 5.5 with a captivate

i can pull that down and more with my atrix whats ur point ?
Think the point is that with a 4G phone, if you're in a 4G area, you WOULD be pulling a lot more.... but due to not having fast uploads, download speeds are crippled.
the problem here is that with AT&T's 'enhanced back-haul program' they are only planning on buying some additional bandwidth and speed (raising it to 6Mbps) for each tower's individual internet connection. So even if the tower is using HSPA+ to transmit data to our phones, it is only going to be as fast as the internet connection that the tower has.
Its like using a really nice Wireless router, and wireless card. While it is nice, it doesn't make your connection speed any faster than an older model of router and card that could already handle your internet connection.
I really hope I'm wrong, but anyone who tells you that your Atrix is going to have a 20Mbps mobile data connection from AT&T is just blowing smoke up your @$$.
Interesting facts:
128 HSPA+ network in 65 countries including:
95 HSPA+ networks offering peak rates of 21 Mbps
11 HSPA+ networks offering peak rates of 28 Mbps
22 HSPA+ networks offering peak rates of 42 Mbps
Here is something very interesting for the future:
Radio over Fiber (RoF) Communication System - supposedly has d/l rate of 20Gb/s and is equal to the speed of optic fiber. Could be available in 10 years to the public.
