like quite a few of you i'll be tethering my Tab to my Android phone to avoid paying for two data plans.
what im curious about though is being able to (while tethered) have SMS and MMS messages shared between the two devices so i can respond to a message while browsing on my tab without needing to pull out my phone.
so basically remote notifier, but for Android to Android instead of Android to PC.
You should give Google Voice a try... Send and receive texts from all of your smartphones, laptops, and desktops with a single inbox

I spent some time yesterday trying to find an answer to my continuous problems connecting with Blackberry Connect. This included different ROMS and different versions of Blackberry and Desktop Connect software.
My problem (like many others) is that the initial set-up of Blackberry connect seems to work but as soon as I restart the device or service, it is disconnected and sometimes the service completely shuts with the blackberry icon dissappearing from the tray.
The best success I had (and is still working after 24hrs) is to install Blackberry service without wireless calandar support. Somehow for all versions of ROMS and connect software, enabling wireless calander is causing the disconnects. I can't remember what the service name for this is but for those with similar problems this might help.
On a similar note, does anyone know why wireless calander could be bringing down the blackberry service?

I had a similar problem with the BB connect (2.1.2.16) client on my Wizard. BB connect works fine without calendar sync. I had similar stability issues when I used the old BB connect client (1.x) when my mailbox got too large, and I have a HUGE amount of calendar information thus I am guessing it is size that is causing the issue. It does not help that the BB connect calendar sync doesn't specify a cutoff date to reduce the number of old entries.
I am running BB Connect 2.1.2.16 on my 1605 and have constant issues with the BB client.
I get the odd VCAL error occuring but these are rare compared to the BB Client just switching itself off on a regular basis. Restarting the client does not fix the issue and I have to softreset the device. The device is generally slow and unstable after a long period of running the BB Connect client constantly.
I send and receive about 200 mails a day and keep a weeks worth of mail in my Blackberry mailbox so yes perhaps this is size related.
However I have a collegue in Austria who is using the T-Mobile version of the Hermes, and a slightly earlier version of BB Connect (2.1.2.15 I think) and it seems to be a lot more stable.
Any clues ??

I run 2.1.2.16 on a Wizard and without PIM, it works reasonably well. The most I've kept in the BB inbox is around 400 mail as that was around when the BB 1.x client used to play up an I got used to deleting the mail from BB (I do not sync deletes with my Inbox for this reason). If you are keeping 1000 mail I would say try and delete the mail daily (including deleting from the "Deleted" folder) and see if it improves. I know that with the BB 1.x client, if I got too many mail the BB client would start chewing up CPU and the device would act strange, and sometimes I needed to soft reset, disable BB, delete the mail, reset again and things would be good again.
What baffles me is why people keep so many emails on their BB's I read a message, if it requires an immediate response I send a note from the BB and then maybe follow up later on the PC, I then delete the message, if its not relevant I read and delete it, if it can be dealt with later, I read it, then mark it as unread and then delete it from the BB, I do not sync my mailbox with the BB thus all mail is still in my Outlook inbox...

I think it just depends on how people work. I tend to read on the run (between meetings) and I delete when I remember sometime at home or on the train on the way to work or something like that.
On basic t-mobile vario II - 'out of the box' wm5 rom etc etc
I have set up one of my pop3 accounts.
Everything works find, can receive mail, send mail etc etc.
However, when I set this to polling for email every 15 mins, it will only work, if email is open or running in the background and gprs is already connected.
Is this normal?
I was hoping that the way it worked was that it would get to minute 15, open messaging, open a connection to gprs, send & receive, and alert me if there are unread messages.
What I've found is that gprs has to be on or it doesn't work.
Also, that if messaging is not already open, nothing happens, when I turn power on the device and go and look, messaging is not open, if I open it, it says 'disconnecting', but never does.
If I send & receive after this, the new message will open, but then semi-crashes the device in that I can see the message OK, and scrolling works, but nothing else. Soft reset cures this.
Now, is this 'normal' behaviour, or do I need to hard reset to regain this function.
All advice welcome

There's nothing wrong in keeping a GPRS/3G connection open... you only get charged by data transfer, not connection time... if your worried about this, why not add on Web 'n' Walk to your package!
It's not that I'm worried about the data, I do have web & walk, it's more battery life. I've already swapped to gsm instead of 3g for most of the time, but it still uses up more battery than not having it on at all.
So, with bandswitch, I thought I had a really cunning plan, set up polling, and then use banswitch to turn off the connection when finished. But it's not working out like that, as none of it works without gprs connected to start with, and messaging open in the background!
I'm just trying to find out if this is normal behaviour, or there is something funny going on on my device.
Hello everybody,
I have some begginer questions regarding a soon to be aquired htc 8525...
(Windows Mobile 6)
1. How do i set direct-push to push gmail and more importantly - does it require a data plan or can the wifi be used to connect at no extra cost?
how does the whole "wifi" arrangement affect the email setup?- I'm assuming the wifi connection wont allways be available.. does the device periodically check? i could use a general explanation about email and wifi.
2. If a data plan is required - what kind would be the one for me - considering my general needs are - constant email interaction and
time-to-time browser usage. this is why a asked in the former question if the wi-fi option is a cost free option for recieving e-mails....
Thanks
1) There is no easy way to set up gmail to push directly to your phone without 3rd party software (something like emoze) - with these solutions a data plan is recommended, unless you're constantly in range of a wi-fi access point. Also, keep in mind that connecting to wi-fi will drain your battery quickly, so it's not recommended to keep it connected unless you're using it. Otherwise, you can set up your pop3 or imap email client to check periodically (every hour or 2 hours) or only when you tell it to.
2) data plans would depend on your carrier. From what I understand, most carriers have PDA-specific data plans...the cost can vary widely. Connecting to Wifi typically is cost-free, provided it's not a hotspot that makes you pay for access, and wifi is not always there when you need it...and without a data plan, paying per kB can be very expensive.
A lot of answers, links, guides by stevebonning here...good luck:

I gave my wife my old 8125 to use when her phone went out, now she's hooked on it & wants to be able to check e-mail. she dosen't have or want a data plan on it, and is home most of the time, but can't get to the computer b/c of other responsibilities.
I have set it up to access wifi, and it will use it for PIE, But when I set up the e-mail account it wants to dial out to check. I have tried setting the account to work, and internet but it just won't work, If I let it use medianet it's fine.
Any ideas?
I have not found a way to keep WIFI active at all times and doing so would kill the battery in just a few hours anyway. (seems to be more problematic on secure wifi networks)
This is the solution I use because I don't have an unlimited data plan and I don't want anything using the mobile phone network and thus being charged for data usage.
I stop GPRS on the phone using a freeware program called "NODATA". It toggles off the data connection to the phone company. The phone itself and text messaging still work without GPRS. I can then connect to a hotspot and everything else uses wifi instead. SMTP mail, internet browsing, google, search, etc. all flow through the wifi and I don't get billed for it.

Works great for me. Simply toggle GPRS back on only when you need it...
I've heard of others setting up "fake" GPRS connections settings and switching to those. Since the "fake" connection fails, it rolls over to WIFI. But this is much simpler.

Does anyone know how to configure the G1 to get email? I do not have a data plan associated with my G1 and can get email when connected to WIFI. However, my wife has a Motorola w490 with no data plan and can get emails just fine. Can my G1 be set up to get emails while not connected to the internet? Thanks, John
No the g1 needs some kind of data connection. You can save emails to the phone but need to connect to wifi to download them.
The G1 works all data through a data plan. You won't be able to access any email without either a cell network (EDGE/3G) or provided network (WiFi).
The reason why your wife's phone works and gets email is because it's using cell networks, much like your G1 does on EDGE or 3G. However, since non-smartphones don't use a whole lot of data, there's no need for a cell company to even charge for it. More than likely, each email is charged at the same rate SMS is charged at.
T-Mobile doesn't do anything like that for the G1.
