AT&T Vibrant - Vibrant General

I can't stand tmobiles sh*tty signal in my house any longer. So I'm thinking about switching to the big blue brother next door. Obviously i know i have to unlock my device which isn't a bog deal. I'm just worried about not being able to use ATT's sexy 3g and also if i use obsidian there is the option to tether by USB I've used it on tmo but I'm not sure if it will work in att. If anyone can answer these questions i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

it has been confirmed that vibrants supports AT&T 3g speeds. dont ask me how. i dont know fine details why AT&T 3g works, but after a quick search and skim, the vibrant supports frequencies 1900 mhz. AT&T uses 850mhz and 1900mhz for their 3g service. so it appears that as long as the AT&T in your area is using 1900mhz (not 850mhz) then AT&T 3g should work on the vibrant.

works on mine

hey how much is the data for at&t?

I got the plan when I got my Iphone 4 but before I had the 3G S and my plan was grandfathered so I got to keep the unlimited data plan, now I believe they have a 2 gig plan for 25 a month.

850mhz band can be enabled by typing *#2263# in the dialer, then select combi bands > wcdma 850 > add wcdma_w850 > then click menu and back
you now can use the 1900 and 850 3g bands for at&t

No you CAN'T. I can't believe a developer got this garbage going again. You CAN'T use 850MHz on a T-Mobile Vibrant. "Enabling" the band does NOTHING.

I have my Vibrant running on At&t, and I did this test,,, I went ahead and disabled all the bands in the phone but the 850mhz, restated the phone and got 3G working... If that does not confirm that the 850mhz band works, what does it?
I'm using MacNut R10 which is mostly based off of AT&T froyo and the i9000 froyo.

I work 40+ hrs and I go to school full time too. I have horrible reception at school. work, and home can you believe that? Even my friend with the MyTouch HD on HSPA+ loses signal the moment he steps in my house. I must live in like a black hole or something cause F*CK! my dad is on AT&T and he has perfect signal. if i jump on his plan which is a black berry with unlimited internet would i be able to grandfather my self in there?

HSPA+

So according to Phonscoop.com Tmobile offically launched HSPA+. Apparently its in 50 markets.
So whoes got it? What kind of speeds are you getting. I have in my city.
Im getting 2.025mb/s Down and 601kbps/sec up
about 3 to 6mbps because you most likely have a device that can only do 7.2 megabites per second until a hspa+ device is available at the end of this summer. Max theoretical speed should be 21mbps, but thats going to be next year when tmobile lets the 42mbps network go into place.
My speed test says im getting 5007 download and 1583 upload..Not bad. It used to stay around 3500 DL.
The slide will support higher than 7.5 MB correct?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
The way I understand it; the slide will be limited tp 7.2mbps spped. They have to install a hatdware upgrade to the towers to support HSPA+ at 42mbps and that will require a different radio.
I know its not the same; but think of it like sprint. You need a 4G phone (EVO) to get WiMax 4G network service.
If I'm wrong; someone pleae correct me (but politely).

I genuinely hope you are because I explicitly asked the rep if this phone would support the new HSPA+ and of course the response was "Yes"!
You cannot compare Sprint because they went from 3G to 4G and that required a change in hardware both at the towers and the device. Tmobile HSPA+, from what I researched, only requires hardware upgrades on the towers and firmware updates to the newer 3G devices. I would be highly pissed if this isn't the case!
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
The rep told me too that the Slide would support HSPA+ From all the articals though i do not think this is 100% ture. But 7.2mb/s is fast enough for me on a phone.

i also asked tech support from the 1800 number too. They said the slide would support it up to 15mb/sec. We'll have to see. Right now i am happy with my 2+mb/sec speeds
The way I've understood it is that phones like the Slide will see improvements in speed, but since they are not HSPA+ phones, you won't get the full benefit.
The plus side is that you won't need a new phone and you'll see faster speeds. Downside is that people with a new phone will see faster speeds.

I think you are right on this.
But if i get speeds of 5-7mb/s on my phone i will be more then happy. Esp if im already happy with my 2mb+/s speeds.
I really dont think that anyone needs 15mb/s on a phone. With speeds like that the phone then becomes the bottleneck.
The T-Mobile twitter also told me it was an HSPA+ phone...
All I'm saying is that I don't expect the full HSPA+ speed, but I do expect faster than 7.2 Mbs!

In respect to increased speeds, yes but that is it. HSPA+ utilizes the current Tmobile's 3G network and is really fast. Theoretically the top speed is less then the other two but it is significantly cheaper and easier to rollout HSPA+.

bits, not bytes. 8 megabits per second = 1 megabyte per second if I'm not mistaken.
HSPA+ as an extension of HSPA is backward compatible with HSPA. Only HSPA+ devices will see speeds greater than 7.2mb, but you can use a HSPA phone on an HSPA+ network in the same way you can use an edge phone on a 3g network.
All android devices from T-Mobile have an HSPA internal modem, they don't currently sell a phone with an HSPA+ modem and you will not see speeds exceeding 7.2mb on a slide as it has an HSPA modem.
T-mobile is rumored to be announcing their first HSPA+ phone late this summer, suspected to be an HTC vanguard.

Tmobile's HSPA+ Network

For those of you who are confused about Tmo's HSPA+ network and making comments on it's durability, here is a link that is on Tmo's website. I figured I'd make it easy for those of you that can't seem to do research.
http://t-mobile-coverage.t-mobile.com/hspa-mobile-broadband#
p.s. I have been in a couple of cities that carry HSPA+ right now and it's download speed from the interstate is around 4mbs. Remember peeps,IT'S NOT 4G. IT'S 4G LIKE. Quoted from Tmobile.

I believe you. KC is pulling that however there are still parts of KC that pulls 3g and edge. I have done the speed tests on that area (3x each). I believe that areas that are mentioned to have HSPA+ are probably still being boosted seeing how the network is still kinda new. I have noticed some members posting their speed results in places like Texas and the results are phenomenal.

Yep. I can attest to that. At work, the HSPA+ speed is beautiful. I can browse endlessly while tethering.
Although for some reason at home it says I have HSPA+ yet I lose data constantly, and it goes from HSPA+ to Edge, totally skipping 3G. Either way, I have no complaints since I can just use WiFi. It has worked well everywhere else since I got the phone.

Just a question , i searched the forum and nothing. In Brazil, we got exactly the same phone as atrix 4g, except the fact it is 3g only. even the model is the same (mb860).
Someone tested, or know if there would be a problem flashing the 4g roms?

HSPA+ (what we have now) is still considered a 4G network, and AT&T has recently begun to roll out their LTE network in major cities (http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/08/atandts-4g-lte-network-is-live-in-san-francisco/ for example)
can't really blame AT&T for advertising HSPA+ as 4G when it's technically part of the whole 4G terminology though.
Ah ok. Yeah the speeds seem comparable, and they do make it clear if you read about it on their site. I didn't know hspa+ was technically 4g so thanks for that info.

Pretty reasonable.

Straight Talk a MVNO using AT&T network. Data is limited to 2Gb (soft cap i think) and everything else unlimited.
Use any compatible UMTS phone even the AT&T iphone 4 or 4s. Back then you had to buy the e71 phone now they have sims/micro sim for $15
Everything works just configure the proper apn information.

That means you'll get a ST SIM tied to T-Mobile. Not a good thing if you tend to venture away from major metropolitan areas.

Straightalk is scam and ripoff
Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.

sounds like the apns are not correct. I have been running straighttalk sim on atrix 4g for allmost 6 months. have to enter the apns every time i flash a ICS rom. If you do not put them in correctly no data. (i think 1 time i had a capital letter that was supposed to be lowercase and it did not work)
I have the iPhone 4 on Straight Talk and I love my fast unlimited 3G.
Of course I have everything working including mms.

Who is using a Verizon G2 on T-Mobile?

I just learned that the Verizon version comes SIM unlocked and should work on T-Mobile and AT&T. Anyone here using it on T-Mobile? What are your results? I know LTE is a no-go, but do you get decent speeds in a refarmed area? I can't find any T-Mobile versions on Craigslist, but there are a ton of Verizon versions for pretty cheap so I was thinking of snatching one up if you guys have had any luck.

Actually I'm pretty sure u can use lte on Tmo as they use aws bands for lte which is one of the 2 bands the vzw model supports. If u go to the g2 Wikipedia page it shows compatible bands for all varients
the definition of open: “mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git:// android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make" gansta mic drop
Instead of creating a new thread I decided to bump yours.
While I still have unlimited data on Verizon, I know it won't last forever, so I bought a SIM and activated it on the $30/mo plan. Today is the first day with it, and while I don't get coverage at work which I already knew, GPRS and EDGE seem to work, just very, very slowly. I went into an LTE area and I did not have LTE, but had HSPA+ and as I drove away it switched to HSPA, then back to EDGE. While on HSPA+ I ran two speed tests, pings were around 60ms but the download speed was about 1-1.5Mbps, and upload was well under 1Mbps.
I'm running CM 10.2 (CM11 has BT issues for me), does anyone else use their Verizon phone on T-Mobile and gets better speeds? Last year I bought a Nexus 4 and in a close location I got 15-20Mbps on HSPA+, so I think it's something with this phone.
I also noticed that despite being connected to GPRS, EDGE, or HSPA+ in about phone it says the signal strength is -120dBm and doesn't move.
I think the G2 doesn't have the AWS LTE bands enable yet. Maybe in a future update.

Turns out I just didn't give it enough time. Running 12b radio and now I can access their LTE network.

How much time did you need to give it, and are there any modes that need to be enabled? I'm on stock ROM with 12b but can't seem to get past HSPA. If switch the phone to LTE/CDMA, it doesn't find any service but will find HSPA when in Global mode.
My Verizon S4 would find T-Mobile LTE when switched to LTE/CDMA, but wouldn't find the GSM networks unless switched to Global. Using the phone info app, I was able to set it to LTE/GSM auto PRL, but that app doesn't seem to work for the G2.

I think it was just because I was in a poor 4G/LTE coverage area. Later that day I went into the city and it jumped right to LTE.

I had some odd connection display issues with the stock rom from verizon.
It seems to try to check for it cdma network. And the annoying ?Sim Simbol.
I just flashed the t-mobile stock rom with the flex patch.
Been using it as if its a tmobile phone.
Blazingfast stable and it was dirt cheap.

So I've got a similar question, but if I got a verizon version of this phone (due to cost - the verizon one sells for ~30-50 cheaper) can I use it with straight talk for data/talking/text/mms/etc.? Or does ONLY data work when using an ATT/T Mobile sim?
My plan is to use the phone with a ATT straight talk sim card.
This is a nice bit of information considering ill be switching to T-mobile next month... so your telling me i just pop a T-mo sim in this g2 and boom thats the end of it?

Yes u can. Just bypass the activation screen with that "volume upvdown combo"(search for instructions) and u can use with verizon stock rom.
No sim unlock needed.
Flashing will make it easier to deal with stock bloatware.
Since verizon ware is pretty deep integrated.

That's great! Thanks for the Info!
I'm excited now, I will get verizon G2.. I always wanted to G2 since it came out but I had Optimus G in April 2013.. their service sucks ass >.< I just wanted a better coverage since in Hampton Roads there's more Verizon and T-mobile LTE coverage. Will it work with LTE correct? I'm thinking if it doesn't have LTE I can just pop in straight talk sim? sorry I am a total noob lol

Flash the Stock T-Mobile Rom and Patch it with the Flex Patch.
I am getting stable LTE 4G. 3G where no LTE present.
I don't know if I was on LTE on Verizon rom, I couldn't tell the antenna indication apart LOL

Can you tell me if you are getting HSPA+ in non-refarmed areas? Thinking of picking one up but not sure if I'll get HSPA+ in the 1700 areas... Just not a lot of 1900 around here.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Nobody wants to seem to answer this... I'd love it if you could.

I think It uses 1700 for the 4G ?
But when i venture towards Louisiana I loose stable 4G and i get 3G. (But then its like Ghost town of GSM towers there)
I reside in Houston Area at the moment where most parts of it are 4G/H+/LTE
The Version i want to get my hands on is the D805 it seems to match 2 antennas from T-Mobile if its the same mhz no idea.

Wow... Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
The funny thing is even the specifications for the T-Mobile variant say nothing about 1700 either. They only talk about 1900. Yet, mine obviously works in non-refarmed areas.
You don't notice that you can't get HSPA+ less than anyone with a T-Mo device, right? All I want is for it to work just as well, not better.

It wouldn't work any worse than a Normal Tmobile phone from what I have noticed.
It does work better than a AT&T iPhone 4S variant used on Tmobile when it comes to Data.
It seems to be getting about the same performance in Data than the iPhone 5 T-Mobile Variant.
There are areas where the iPhone 5 Picks up 4G faster, there are areas where LG G2 is Faster in Download speed. (Basic Difference between phones)
But normal use I have no issues, I have not taken LG G2 on an international Trip yet.
I do use 4G Data Alot I jsut reached my 2gb mark for the month with 8 days to go.
