Just a question , i searched the forum and nothing. In Brazil, we got exactly the same phone as atrix 4g, except the fact it is 3g only. even the model is the same (mb860).
Someone tested, or know if there would be a problem flashing the 4g roms?

Is there (or is it possible) any way to enable 4g on this phone? Does att even have 4g networks or is it simply this "3g hspa+ with enhanced backhaul" crap. I'm happy with the speeds, just wondering.

Lol wow. I mean its not that big of a deal to me, my phone's internet speeds are generally as fast or faster than my cable connection at home. But when other networks already have real 4g, its a bit worrying to see one of the largest carriers not have it yet. By 2013 we could have 6g though. lmao.

HSPA+ (what we have now) is still considered a 4G network, and AT&T has recently begun to roll out their LTE network in major cities (http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/08/atandts-4g-lte-network-is-live-in-san-francisco/ for example)
can't really blame AT&T for advertising HSPA+ as 4G when it's technically part of the whole 4G terminology though.
Ah ok. Yeah the speeds seem comparable, and they do make it clear if you read about it on their site. I didn't know hspa+ was technically 4g so thanks for that info.

Only because there was/is no 4G standard so Att just called it 4G and who is anybody that is not Att to say otherwise? If Att called a bottle of water 4G who would be able to disprove it? 4G IS NOT created equal, it needs to be better standardized and regulated..

Now to wait for a decent LTE phone to get released for AT&T.

Actually, Sprint is in the process of converting old towers which required separate componants for 3G and WIMAX and converting them into new, smaller, all-inclusive towers so that they will be 3G/4G

this, and the first post in this thread are completely false... what are you guys smoking?
Sprint doesn't own any Wimax equipment, it belongs to Clearwire.
Clearwire will only be building out 4G Wimax sites in major cities, the suburbs will be built out by OpenRange..
so, there can never be a combined 3g/4g cell site, they will always have separate equipment for both.

Hi all
After seeing so many people with their speed tests posted as their sigs, I was curious as to what everyone's average speed was.
So if you want to participate in this thread, go on mobilespeedtest dot com from your phone, run a 7MB test using your 4G data connection, and post your results here. Post your location if you like as well, I'm curious to see what people get.
Or as michael2041 suggested, you can also use the Speedtest.net app if you'd like. Anything that's optimized for mobile devices and can give you an image to post up is free game.
Please don't cheat, this isn't a competition. This is just a fun thread for people to contribute to
Here's my results with T-Mobile in NYC.

the term xG, comes from the 1st Generation, 2nd Generation and so on. HSPA is the 3rd Generation. So wouldn't that mean HSAP+ is variant of HSPA. so it would still place it in the 3G bracket.

If that is true has why is wimax consider 4g when it was invented in 2001 long before 3g in 2008?
To correct you 4g has to do with theoretical download speeds not the generation of technology. Hence, why both wimax and hspa+ are considered 4g

I was told something completely different by a T-mo rep.
I was told that each generation has to meet 2 pieces of criteria. 1) has to be a updated hardware/software package then the previous version and 2) it has to meet a certain theoretical download speeds requirement.
Wi-Max is a updated software/hardware package then what sprint used prior to it. So they could call it the 4th Generation of Data transfer. Where as it didn't meet the specs of the download speed. I don't know how they got to use that name legally.
And didn't the counsel downgrade their standards to meet what Sprint and T-Mobile were producing with Wi-Max and HSPA+?

to be considered a 4g the technology has to be able to achieve 100 mbit/sec download, which hspa+ is capable of.

edit:for the record, I don't like verizon's either.
Come on. You mean to tell me that the Verizon "Data Card" bownloading at 50Mbps beats a phone downloading at 40Mbps. Look at the upload. Nowhere even close. NYC has DAS units all over. I'm not on NYC and you can't argue the upload. I can find a spot to show 50 if you want but I just did a random test and got these results. Just thought I'd share. Again. This is on a phone. Not a dedicated data card.

Regardless of which is better or not, I'm glad at&t is finally rolling out LTE.
I don't expect you to be able to answer these questions, but is the device you're using coming out before the end of the year and do you know if at&t plans to offer unlimited LTE data for a short period like verizon did?
Question - why does anyone give a crap? What good is that 40 Mbps doing you. Nothing on the phone will ever make use of that. Even if you are tethering to a computer it isn't nearly as useful as those speeds would be on a home broadband connection due to the data caps. At 40 Mbps you would go through a full month's 4 GB tethering package data allotment in about 13 minutes! What a joke.
considering this is on a fairly loaded network that is running in well over 5 cities I'd say its pretty good :-D
Question - HOW DID YOU GET AN LTE PHONE ON AT&T?
Also, nice speeds, obviously Verizon's LTE is going to get much better speeds when they've had time to get enough backhaul to all the LTE towers, just give AT&T some time, just like the time Verizon has had.
wow
amazing speeds you get there, I don't even get close
Great question. We all would like to know that one

I can't tell you how I got the phone but rest assured they are coming. Once the backhaul gets updated across the board everyone will see better speeds even with the 4G (HSPA+) devices. I'm not 100% sure how the data plans are going to work but I'm sure they will be capped higher than 2Gb. They will have to be capped somewhere or else everyone will use bandwidth all the time taking it away from other users.
That's all I know for now.

I'm not saying that you will see a drop in speeds once everyone jumps on the bandwagon but what would you ever need speeds like that for anyway? Streaming movies? Hah. Maybe if your downloading one and don't want to wait or don't have wifi at home. Anyway, there are just a lot of new and exciting things happening with the AT&T network and the difference will or should already be seen by most of you now or in the near future.
Not only the network but the devices are getting better and better IMO (really unbiassed) I think AT&T has the better devices hands down.
For all those who asked. I can not say how I have an LTE device but they are sure to impress everyone once released.

Straightalk is scam and ripoff
Didn't work for me. I cannot even use SMS with their unlimited $45 plan. Data is down as well. I'm on Straighttalk AT&T SIM card. Customer support reset the options on their side twice, but it didn't help. I tried two different phones with this SIM card to no avail.

sounds like the apns are not correct. I have been running straighttalk sim on atrix 4g for allmost 6 months. have to enter the apns every time i flash a ICS rom. If you do not put them in correctly no data. (i think 1 time i had a capital letter that was supposed to be lowercase and it did not work)
I have the iPhone 4 on Straight Talk and I love my fast unlimited 3G.
Of course I have everything working including mms.

So I live in the Baltimore area which has full 4G/LTE coverage. I RARELY have 4G on this thing. Anyone having that issue as well?
Seems to connect fine for me when not on WiFi. I would be contacting Sprint if you are sure the LTE in that area is strong enough. Make them do the work to figure it out. Have you updated your PRL? If not you should do that and see if it helps.
From Sprint: "On some 4G LTE chipsets such as Qualcomm, the PRL determines if LTE is enabled for the geographic region you are in."

Just update profile and PRL. No luck. Do I need to reboot?

So I did all that, switched from LTE/CDMA to CDMA and back to LTE/CDMA. Sprint updated their end and everything. Still no 4G. They said it's a hardware issue, but I do have 4G off and on while driving so I don't understand what the issue is.

That is a pain. If it was me I would be taking the phone back until they get it working. For what we pay for the device and plan the pressure should be on them to get it fixed. Good luck.

Yeah the live chat people are morons anyway. Might just go to the store and tell them to fix it.
I have the same issue in my area. I checked on sprint.com/coverage and it claims there is 4G coverage in my area. I hardly see the 4G icon on my phone and its painfully slow when on "3G".
I read somewhere that sprint is updating their towers for better coverage and start LTE coverage in more areas (mine included). I read on some unofficial site that they are only 23% done updating and are expected to complete the project (in my area) by the end of this year.

From what I understand, that's pretty normal.

You probably zoomed out too far. I copied and pasted the east and west together so you can see where Sprint LTE is in 1 image.

I understand that. Just would have figured newer tech means better coverage. I guess not.
I was just in Baltimore all week for business and I got 4G the entire week! I was staying right near Camden Yards at a Holiday Inn Inner Harbour.

No, they just are not finished implementing lte. Think of sprint.com/coverage as planned coverage not actual completed sites. Most areas are 30%-40% complete from what I have been reading.
http://s4gru.com has a pretty in depth and accurate tracking system

Actually, I had done something with my MSL changing my proxy settings & when it rebooted, I looked at my network preferences & noticed it was CDMA only. I had to enable LTE before I actually started seeing LTE again in areas when I KNEW I should've had it around Dallas. Thing was, it was several days before I noticed it was CDMA only!
