Desire HD in eyes of SGS owners - Desire HD General

Hi there,
I am thinking about switching from my SGS to Desire HD. The reasons for this are at this moment irrelevant, but I would like to know if there is anyone out there who made the switch and what she or he thinks about it.
In what ways is Desire HD better, in what ways is it worse? Stuff like that. A comparison from a user's point of view.
Thanks.

legend worth it to skip desire?

asking few questions to legend owner.
between legend and desire, i'm leaning towards legend because of its design.
but snapdragon on desire sounds very tempting...
what do you say legend users? do you experience any lag because of lack of cpu or ram compare to desire?
The desire is more powerful but don't forget that its screen has a higher resolution, in other words it needs more power...
Why I've chosen the legend over the desire?
- First of all the legend has a much better finish than the desire, that looks too "nerd" for me. It looks more like a small computer than a cell phone..
- The legend is very smooth and do not really need more power
-The legend can almost do everything the desire can do but with a better pocket size.
- With a 3,2 screen instead of 3,7 screen, and a worse processor, it think the battery is better.
However, you should take the desire if:
- You really want to watch videos on your device
- You like playing a lot with your device because i think that games are going to require more and more config to run...
Look at the price for both desire & legend, its nearly the same: there is no best phone between them...
=> The legend has one of the best design for a smartphone
=> The desire is the more powerful
Allow me to offer a few pointers. I've got both devices. Desire for myself and the Legend for my wife.
Performance-wise, there's no doubt the Desire edges out the Legend. But the Legend is not 40% slower as the CPU clockspeeds may suggest. You'll encounter the occasional hiccup with the Legend when compared to the Desire, but you probably won't notice it unless you have both devices like I do. I would call this round a draw.
Aesthetically, it's very subjective. When you pull your Legend out, people will be drawn to the aluminum unibody enclosure. When you pull your Desire out, people will be drawn to the large 3.7" screen. I think the Legend looks nicer, but the Desire is in no way "geeky". It looks better in real life than on photos/videos. I'd describe it as more sophisticated looking while the Legend is more sexy.
Surely, you've read/seen reviews of both. See here for my review on the Desire and here for my review on the Legend. I tried to only put down things that were not mentioned or covered extensively by others. And I mentioned a couple of differences that may or may not matter to you.
Personally, I think it comes down to your screen/device size preference.
every time I pull out my legend I always get asked about it. it stands out from the crowd especially being in a country where you cannot buy it in store.
as for lag on the legend, it gets a little bit of lag if you quickly switch between lots of applications but other than that its fine
also if lag is a problem then disabling HTC sense is always an option but then you are limited to 3 home screens
it is a very good looking device tho.

big help from all of you guys......love the look of legend and i think i will go with legend instead of desire unless htc decides to make a legend looking phone with snapdragon processor
i think you will be very happy with it , especially once it is rooted and we can save apps to the sdcard :

Everytime I pull out my Legend in public I get a fine for indecent exposure. But that's for a different forum.
I love my Desire both how it looks and how it performs. Just needs a better battery to really make it the best phone period.
I haven't touched the Desire, so I can only write about the Legend.
In my own opinion:
The Legend looks GREAT, ATTRACTIVE & CLEAN design, & feels SOLID. I get so much compliments about the phone, even old folks, who don't care about phones, think the my phone is very nice looking.
However, the sharp edge on top of the earpiece sometimes hurts my ear.
It performs very well & smooth.
I use the phone MAINLY for calls & text messages. & I don't play & care for games on the phone. Therefore, the Legend's SIZE is PERFECT for me.
The phone has GREAT audio quality, which is nice & clear, & has good battery life.
I read somewhere that says because of the Legend's aluminum case, it doesn't get excellent signal. However, the reception has not let me down yet.
I'm also using HTC Touch Diamond 2, & HTC HD. My house has really bad signal & I have NO PROBLEMS with the Legend, whereas the other 2 get drop calls constantly.
It has 4 plastic buttons that feel REALLY CHEAP. You'll be disappointed with these buttons.
It has some other Cons, but you'll get that with the Desire too, so I won't go there.
I think you should also go to the Desire's board & ask what they like & dislike about the Desire & then make your own decision.
For now, I'm keeping the Legend until I can find a phone suitable for my need.
Cheers,
D
yeah the only real problem with it are the cheap feeling buttons which is a shame but the rest is of a very high quality
legend or desire
i have used nexus one before i got my legend. speed-wise, nexus one is no doubt faster than hero. but when i used legend, it's almost as smooth as the nexus one. also, when you install a lot of apps or put a lot of widgets in the homescreen, there's a tendency to lag. after using the nexus one for 2 months, i would say i like the legend more compared to nexus one. sorry im comparing legend with nexus one instead of desire. they both have the same specs anyway, well majority.

Agreed, traded my nexus for the Legend.
It's a bit slower but nothing that ruins the Android experience. It's till very quick.

nexus one being almost identical to desire, every piece of info helps! thanks
... and something important too: Nexus one is due to be the "first in class" android, so is the most expensive one. Desire is cheaper than Nexus one to avoid confusions in the market. Legend need to be cheaper than Desire due to processor speed. I believe Legend would be more expensive if Nexus and Desire would not be available in the market. So, Legend has a competitive price with an excellent hardware and software configuration.
no doubt you are right. Best device I ever had

week with legend
I been using Legend just about a week.. first phone ever that don't make any kind of hardware sound.. almost every phone that I had and tested even with HD2.. make those hardware movement noise.. this phone is rock solid.. by the look and design.. it's phone, fit in ur hand perfect.. one of the best sound quality phone that I had.. HTC sense and Android.. sense work great.. since this is my first android phone.. I can't tell much about it..I used my bro's Hero about a week. Legend is much faster.. here in US.. 3G service don't work.. but even with Edge,, it's much faster and smoother internet experience than any other phone that I had or tested.. only thing that I don't like about the hardware is the 4button key.. I wish HTC made this with capacitive touch key like the Nexus one or touch HD..
buy the Legend.. it's cheaper than Desire.. also more phone factor than Desire..
if u need super PDA+ huge phone.. buy the Desire..
LOL.. just buy either one.. u'll like it anyhow..

I have used google nexus one and legend (I dumped the nexus one in favour of the legend).
i challenge anyone to say there is a difference in speed
the 7227 is a much improved cpu over the hero/touch pro 2/diamond 2 one etc.
its not just the speed.
I think the cpu is a side issue
the real difference between these two is just the screen resolution.
my 2 cents:
1. most android apps just scale up, so actually look worse on 800x480 (no doubt will get better)
2. you can't actually browse at 800x480 on such a small screen, so its benefit is mostly in smoothing
3. 480x320 video will be smoother. very little the human will gain over 800x480 at this size and 320x480 video files will be smaller.
4. 800x480 screeen uses slightly more battery
5. lower resolutions are here to stay, e.g. HTC Tatto, Sony X10 Mini, etc. only have 240x320 !!!
In summary, whilst 800x480 would be theoretically nicer to have, it makes no difference to me at the moment. the biggest thing I wanted was amoled, which I have got.
You will LOVE the Legend. Its a keeper.
I've got the Legend, because my X10 got swiped.
(Risking OT Compared to the X10, the Legend is much smoother.
However, for me, I may consider the Desire strongly, but simply because I am using a Mac and that the WiFi teether on the Desire makes things a snap for me, especially when I am out of the office.
But otherwise, I do agree that the Legend is a keeper... maybe I'll hand it over to the wife, or to one of my kids.
legend looks super awesome in comparison to the staid desire ..
i want to thank everyone on the great informative reply. i just ordered mine at htcperida can't wait to play with this bad boy!! once again, thanks a lot everyone!!!!

[Q] Desire or Desire HD?

Hi dear,
I own galaxy s and I like it.
After I saw HTC desire hd, I've changed my mind though.
I'm about to sell my phone and going to get the phone ot desire.
Do you think if I will get desire(not hd), is it too late to get it?
Should I wait for desire hd?
I'm tired of the laggy on galaxy s...
13 days till HD is released, thats nothing honestly.
I've been waiting for months =X
@jorkobe23 The only reason you're considering buying a DHD is because of the lag issues on the SGS? If so, why not wait until the end of the month for the SGS update to 2.2 to see if it fixes the lag issues?
It may save you a lot of money to wait, especially since from your post it seems that other than the lag you're happy with your SGS.
nono,
I love sense ui and I want to have bigger screen.
I heard android froyo is optimized for snappgon cpu not hummingbird.
So many people guess even though froyo will release for galaxy s,
the laggy and gps problem will not be solved.
Idree: Haha,
did you sell your galaxy s?
wait for the DHD, its will be on stock very soon, until the 22th.
dono, for me anyway the SGS is not the real thing, no cm for that device yet, and dono, its made like plastic.

if you want a bigger screen i wouldn't go for the desire because that has a 3.7" screen which is smaller than your current phone, which is 4" the desire hd will have a screen of 4,3"
Desire HD advantages:
- updated graphics GPU (faster 3d games performance)
- bigger screen 4.3 vs 3.7inch
- 8MP camera with real 720p recording vs 5MP and broken 720p
- more RAM and more internal storage (internal is no issue on desire with A2SD+)
- Full aluminum body
- new sense
Desire advantages
- Slimmer, lighter and easier to operate in one hand
- Higher screen density (252dpi vs 233dpi)
- AMOLED or SLCD (Sexier colors and blacks then standard LCD on the HD with better viewing angle)
- semi aluminum frame
- new sense is on the way (either officially or by xda)
i'm personally in love with my dense SLCD screen and slim body, so i wait for the next desire, praying for 4inch version
Haha Thanks for useful information, hamdir.
Hm... I think I should go desire HD cos I heard desire has had multi touch problem, right?

a slight multi touch problem, the desire is dual touch, i'm not facing any issues with games like hero of sparta and emulators
the issue appears with FPS like games for example where you might keep one finger still on the movement buttons and aim with the other
in games like heavy gunner where you have to dual control both left and right guns i faced no issues and i've enjoyed that game
as for the interface no problems, pinch to zoom works perfectly
but yes your right if that is a concern go with the HD (i'm not sure if multi touch is confirmed), the HD is more suited to games anyway because of the much faster GPU
for me i compared the HD2 usage to Desire usage and the size was unfortunatly an issue for me
Ok.. so I'm in the same situation here... and I can't make up my mind between the 2 phones ....
I've read this whole forum and also looked at the 20 best mobile phones at techradar - The original desire is still at number 1.
I like the big screen. I am basically in front of a pc the whole day .. So I can pretty much charge the phone anytime.
So I would like some input from fellow xda users ... which is the best to go for? Desire or Desire HD?

I have a Desire and just got the DHD last week. The DHD doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade over the Desire for me personally and I prefer the more compact size of the desire.
If I didn't already have the Desire, I would be happy with the DHD on it's merits.
@Cranzy: my opinion is that if you don't mind the extra 4mm height and 8mm width, if you don't mind the touch buttons and don't need the optical trackball, if you don't mind the maybe little lower battery life (on other side, on first run i still have 52% battery after nearly 12 hour run, so it looks like a full day with a bit higher usage than usual for me), then go for Desire HD. I got it yesterday, and it's impossible to compare with my old Milestone, the speed is like from a different planet .
Thanks for the info... Think I'm much more leaning towards the Desire HD ...
Ok... the more i read the forum here .. the more I'm thinking Im gonna make the wrong choice by moving to the desire HD and that I should rather be moving to the normal desire ... maybe I should go start reading the normal desire forums ...
Each phone has probably got their own problems...
Will future firmware updates fix most of these little nagging problems ..?
I am upgrading here from HTC diamond .. so both desire or desire HD is a major upgrade ...
Is everybody still saying I should go for the desire HD?
It all depends what you want, but don't forget that graphical performance of HTC Desire is ~50% of the Desire HD or Z.
I really like the big screen and htcsense feature ... i don't mind the battery ... just been reading about the sensor and camera issues ...
Im still leaning towards the Desire HD though
I'm on my second day of my dhd not totally sure if I'm keeping it . Love the screen size and battery life . But its not that much of an upgrade from my desire and I do like the amoled screen better on the desire .
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I gathered from the forums that if you are coming from the desire .. the upgrade isn't really worth it... but for me coming from htc diamond ... it will be
To be honest they are both great phones . Very tempted to keep the hd but will live with my desire till something a bit better comes along or my desire goes faulty . But never the less the hd is a class phone if your coming from something totally different .

Galaxy S User Contemplating Desire HD

I have had the Samsung Galaxy S for about a month now and played around with it quite a bit. Having had Winmo, and Blackberry devices before I quite like the Android OS. The GPS on the sammy is quite frankly crap, the main selling point for me was the AMOLED screen, but I find myself dimming it down to preserve battery life which isn't that great. I HATE KIES, what a terrible bit of software that is, apart from that the device is very good.
But now I am being drawn to the Dark Side and looking at the Desire HD and don't read the same amount of negativity I do with the sammy, and it seems size does matter - that extra 0.3 inches!!!
Anyone played with both devices that can give me some objective pro's and con's, it would be very much appreciated.
I really like to know this too cause i'm between buying a Captivate or Desire HD.
There's a full thread further down on the forum Galaxy S vs Desire HD.

[DISCUSSION] Choice between Galaxy S or HTC Desire Z

Hey guys,
I am torn between these 2 phones. Which one should I get, HTC Desire Z or Samsung Galaxy S?
In terms of future updates (Gingerbread or Honeycomb if there is), which one is more likely to be updated?
In terms of web browsing, is Galaxy S with stock froyo good enough to be compared to HTC Desire Z?
Need your guys inputs for battery life too.
Thanks and really appreciate any response.

Do you email, text, tweet and IM a lot? Enough to justify a hardware keyboard?
Get the Z.
For web browsing alone, the Galaxy S will probably be better with it's larger and AMOLED screen.
Regarding future updates, I'd go for the Z. At least HTC update their flagship phones (the Z is not, but the Galaxy S has still not been updated).
I don't know anything about the batteries.
Hope I helped you bro.
Certainly bro, thanks!

Don't know, have neither phone
Although I think they'd be about the same. And whichever phone has the faster CPU would probably render the pages faster.
Why not visit a phone shop and test both out. Just say to someone (who works there) that you don't know which phone to pick, and would like to test them side by side.
And be sure to ask them to put a SIM in.
"WHY WON'T IT LOAD ANY PAGES!!?!"
I see. Thanks for the inputs. Is the multi-touch resolved for the HTC Desire Z?
And also, one thing that is bothering me is the hinge. Is it that bad?

I think the hinge just depends on the individual phone. Some people get a stiff (and therefore better) hinge than others. Otherwise, if you get a looser hinge, it *should* only affect you if you lie down or use the phone upside down. Or tweet on a rollercoaster.
I'm going to try and find a shop with a Z to play with it before it is purchased, so if you want, when I come back I'll tell you about the multitouch. Although it'd be better for me if I could install Multi-Touch Visualiser or something on it..
Yeah sure, let me know if the multi-touch is fixed for this phone.
Seems like the hinge is only happening to certain users.
Remind me, what was the multi touch problem?
Sent from a Pulse. Yes, a Pulse.
The z is a better phone by far its built better, its sexier , it can be over clocked to up to 1.9 gigahertz!! And the keyboard feels great and the hinge is pretty stable. And sense is amazing too. the galaxy is an okay phone its got a big screen and its really bright but the amoled makes the colors look off a bit but its still nice but that's not enough to convince me to buy it. Plus htc just makes the best smartphones. Oh and the z has an fm radio

Am not aware of any multi touch issues but the z has true multi touch, it can register up to 4 points at any given time meaning it's also great for gaming. It took me a while to finally purchase the z after hearing alot of discontentments about the sheer weight of the phone and the hinge. I thought that nothing could beat the n1 but after only a couple of me time with my new z, I knew that I'd made the right choice, it has alot to offer and now that permanent root has been obtained it's only gonna be a matter of time before more custom roms are available, we already have cyanogen, evil, paul and villainrom on board.
I'd say the z/g2.
z and hd has true multitouch.

Cool~~ what's holding me back from buying desire z is the hinge man!
I don't know how bad is the hinge.
Is the processor speed of 800mhz different from the HTC Desire snapdragon of 1ghz?
Because currently I'm using HTC Desire.

What I've heard about were the potential damage to the hinge and not damaged hinges. The new processor is indeed a 2nd generation snapdragon. I did a comparison against my n1 both running at 1ghz. You'd be pleased to know that the z blew the n1 out of the water on linpack and quadrant tests.

You can root the Desire Z and install custom ROMs either manually or using ROM manager. Look in the G2 and Desire Z Android Development forum for more info on rooting and custom ROMs. If I had to choose between the Desire Z and the Milestone 2, I would hands-down choose the Desire Z. The Milestone 2 is not even close, in my opinion.
You have any problem with the hinge? And how is browsing and games on it?
The hinge "issue" is totally overblown, don't worry about it. Mine is fine, and I like how the keyboard opens easily. Games and browsing are smooth and a joy.
I haven't played with the Milestone 2 personally. But I've found every recent Motorola device I've laid my hands on to feel disappointingly cheap, and the keyboards very clunky feeling. Light years away from the high build quality of HTC devices.
Most probably will try out a Motorola Milestone 2 first because its cheaper. If I'm not satisfied with it,will be selling it and getting a Desire Z!But I don mind a few more opinions
Oh yeah, how much can I overclock the Milestone 2 to?Do I use setcpu or Milestone overclock?
HTC had built their brand on solid physical keyboards and this does not disappoint at all. The keyboard on this phone is suburb and you don't have to take my word on it, read some reviews online and they all say the same thing. The milestone keyboard was getting warm and cold reactions to it, so your either going to love it or hate it. Other then that, there really isn't any other differences. Both have solid build quality and have some developer support for custom ROMs and such.

I had teh Milestone 2, the keyboard is so much better on the G2.... plus Milestone 2 had sluggish performance because of motoblurr...
I'm not too worried about motoblur. But the locked bootloader on the Milestone 2 is truly frustrating!

Not sure... It's fairly high but I don't thinks it's as high as 1.9Ghz
(I've managed to get mine up to 2.2Ghz But it's very buggy and freezes after 'bout 10seconds of use.... )
the locked bootloader alone would prevent me from buying it. I have no complaints with this phone. by far the best phone i have ever used.
Same here, Desire Z is by far the best phone ive ever used! Modding is great on it, a friend of mine had the moto droid (milestone) and modding on it was not as great as on the Desire Z.

Yeah Motorola really sucks to have a locked bootloader...Looks like I'm now leaning more towards the Desire Z!
You should also take into account the amout of dev support the G2 has, it's probably by far the phone with the most dev support since the G1, in my opinion; just tell me how many phones have a pre RC version of CM7 already out, from what I know, not that many.
never used any moto device, but I'll choose Desire Z over MS2 anytime.
There is one minor issue though: DZ's camera really sucks. Everything else is just perfect.

I've sold my Nexus One already so I can't post side by side comparison shots. Below are a few ones take by Nexus One built-in camera app, untouched at all, click and zoom to see full resolution size.
Desire Z camera is nowhere nearly as good as Nexus One.
I realize that this is just a phone, not a camera. But coming from Nexus One which is also by htc, I am very disappointed at the picture quality of Desire Z.
Well I don really take pictures as much so that may not be too big a problem. What I really want is ability to play high end games and developers support!
