[Q] Reverting to stock - clarification required please - G2 and Desire Z General

I'm hoping there is someone here to clarify some information regarding ROM flashing for me by answering a few questions.
I want to be able to flash ROMs and kernels, but be able to return completely back to stock. As I understand, this is not completely possible but I want for somebody to tell me I am wrong?
1... Will an RUU revert back to s-on?... that is what I'm assuming cannot be reversed.
If s-off cannot be reversed I plan to just root, then replace all apks with the odexed and zip-aligned versions from the Modaco ROM instead.
2... Will I still be able to flash an OC kernel with root enabled but with s-on?
3... If this is possible then I assume I can revert to stock from any of this with the RUU, correct?
Thanks a lot.

That's not correct, you can go back to stock even if you flash custom ROMs etc.
But do *not* just apply a stock RUU once you have a custom ROM, see this for more info as to why not - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838484
Follow the guides in the dev forum on how to return to stock.

Thank you for the swift reply!!
That's sweet music to my ears.
If you don't mind just giving me the nod to this then...
My Build number: 1.34.405.5 CL273326 release-keys
So to unroot and s-on I can follow the following little section from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971 using the PC10IMG from the EURO generic 1.34.405.5 rom.zip.....
Step 2.) Restore factory BOOTLOADER, RECOVERY, KERNEL, ROM (THIS RE-ENABLES S-ON)
Place the factory firmware you downloaded in step 2 above on the root of your sdcard and rename it to PC10IMG.zip one you have done this power off the device and power back on by holding volume down and power. Once in the bootloader it will then scan your sdcard and find the file needed, be patient this can take quite a few minutes. After it finishes scanning you will then have to hit the Volume up key on the side of the phone to restore the software. This will take approximately 5-10 minutes. The phone will reboot in the middle of the update to restore S-ON once rebooted it will then scan sdcard again and resume flashing. Once completed you will have to hit Power to reboot and boot back into the factory restored android os.

..... then just run the 1.34.405.5 RUU?
Or do I need to downgrade to an older ROM 1st as stated in that link I looked at above?
Thanks again

I don't think you need to run that RUU at all, but please wait till someone else confirms if you're going to try this yourself, I don't have enough experience yet to say for sure.

Ok no problem, I'll worry about it another time. Now, know I can go back if I need to, I can start playing!!!
thank you.
If anyone else can add to this please do.

Rooting Mytouch3g 32b(t-mobile/voda) Without goldcard

Guide To rooting mytouch 3g 32b (Even if you have 1.6 update)
Propz to:Amon_RA, andreev2001, Cyanogen, and any one else sources I used
Ok after Searching the forums and finding all types of ways to root a Mytouch and having some/no luck I decided
to created a thread that goes into complete detail(or try to at least) about each step that is guaranteed to work if done correctly.
READ
This guide does not require a goldcard or adb . I am also not responsible for bricked/broken phones. Now since that's out of the way happy rooting!!
IF your phone is currently running 1.5(cupcake) already then skip to step 3
1.First of all we can't really do anything with 1.6 so we must downgrade to 1.5 by downloading this sappimg.nph and installing it
2.Once downloaded put it on your sdcard and reboot and go into hboot mode (Hold END+VOLUME DOWN). Preform the update
3.Once update is COMPLETLY finished and it asks you to reboot. Do so, then load your phone up fully and download this apk here (flashrecovery.apk) then run it.
Skip these steps and go to step 4 if you know how to install a apk
3a.to install this apk you have to enable the install unkown source in your settings. To do this hit menu >Settings>Applications>Unkown Soruces(check this).
3b. After this go to the market and download a app called "Astro" (the description should mention somthing about file manager) or you could use another apk installer but I prefer this one.
4. After installing the apk run it and click on “backup recovery image” let it do what it does then click on “Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4″.
5.Once that is done you want to download the SPL by clicking here, then put it on your sdcard. After that download any ROM(If you dont know what a ROM is search, I cant tell you everything ) of your choice and rename it "update.zip" without quotes then place it in your sdcard
6.Reboot your g1 and hold down the "HOME" key and it should bring up the flash image recovery screen. Choose apply any zip from sd and then choose "update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2005-signed.zip". It finishes almost immediately with message saying successfully flashed(if it doesn't you prolly ate to much chicken ).
7. Then after it is installed select the restart option and then load into fastboot mode (Hold "BACK" arrow key while its restarting). Once fastboot is loaded the SPL info should say HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP30000). If it does congrats almost there!!!!! If it doesn't, you did somthing wrong and you need to retrace you're steps.
8.Exit fastboot by hitting the "GREEN" button and before the phone boots up hold the "HOME" button and then go to "apply sdcard:update.zip". Let it install and VOL LA you installed your ROM. Preform a reboot and you will now have a rooted phone with a custom ROM
1) thanks for posting, ive tried to follow other instructions over the past few days to no avail
2) any chance of hosting the sappimg.nph file somehwere else? I cant access rapidshare from my phone. I would greatly appreciate it.
OMG SOOO EASY!!!! Mods should sticky this as the new root / rom upload process
I was running android 1.6 on tmobil mytouch 3g with perfected spl 1.33.2006

Thanks for posting - much appreciated. Can I ask what the benefit of changing the SPL is? Is this required?
My concern is regarding warranty - if I flash a new SPL, it is my understanding that I will not be able to flash my current one back, and hence return the phone to stock if the need arises.

Yes, it is required. You cannot root with the MT3G SPL, so you need to change the SPL.

You can flash it back to the original SPL. You would then be unrooted. Look at Amon_RA's original rooting process with Gold Card. At the bottom, he gives directions on how to return your phone to the unrooted state in case you need to do that.
Thanks, I thought with one-click-root, once you'd got the recovery rom flashed, you were done - that you had root and could flash what you liked.
For the record, I'm Voda 32B, but have perfected SPL .0007.
[EDIT] Yes, that thread has a file to return to stock, but only for MT3G, which is why I am hesitant to flash a new SPL to my device.
I've still seen in lots of places mind, that suggest this process works without the flashing of a new SPL. Such as: http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
[EDIT]
What happened to the ability to format and
and put partitions from the recovery? I just got another Mytouch and rooted it and no ability to put the partions from the recovery mode? I think I had version 1.2 and now I have 1.4

You still can, but not with the recovery img ur using wirch is cyanogen 1.4. Just flash amans new recovery img and you will be able to partion
4. After installing the apk run it and click on “backup recovery image” let it do what it does then click on “Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4″.

I have rooted my myTouch3G with the 1-click method (twice actually, needed to take it to the store), and I have the perfected SPL 1.33.2006.
The main issue with this SPL is that it does not allow you to use fastboot. As far as I know, this has nothing to do with root access.
Can confirm that I've performed the OP's procedure but *without* flashing a new SPL, and everything is working fine.
Now running CyanogenMod 4.2.2 w/ CM Recovery 1.4.
Does anyone have the link to the partitions recovery? I tried to put the Hero recovery on and it does not want to come on and I still show the Cyanogenmod v1.4 +jf....someone help
Also in the top it has Andriod system recovery (2)? I did it twice, how do i take one off?

Another post regarding OTA. What is necessary?

So there seems to be some confusion about what is necessary to receive the expected OTA. I just applied s-off and reverted to .79 bootloader. I don't have all the stock apps though. I have removed City ID, Tweet/Peep, and changed the boot animation. I'm wondering if I can still install the OTA.
yes u can. here is how
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7864966&postcount=4
Thanks those are very clear instructions. Right now I have 2.1 update 1, stock radio, and hboot 7.9. As I said I have removed CityID, Tweet, changed the boot animation, and I still have some root only apps installed such as wireless tethering. Are you saying I can receive the OTA with this setup or that I have to flash the stock rom again (or I guess I can reinstall the apps and original boot animation.)
Sorry. Tired, I wasn't reading carefully. I see according to your instructions I need to flash back back to stock and urooted rom to accept the update. Then I can reflash and root with unrevocked. Kind of a shame. If I wait will I still be able to get the update? I'm guessing someone will grab it and can flash later. I would rather just do it all at one sitting.

wait no. my guide has that because that is the state i and many other users started in. if u have s-off, then u can simply start at step 3 out here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7864966&postcount=4
as long as u have stock recovery and hboot, it doesnt matter if u have customized ur current rom, the RUU will simply override all that.
So having root and some customizing doesn't matter as long as I have s-off and stock radio and h boot? Awesome! Thanks
.

no, u need stock recovery, s-off and hboot, rom/radio can be custom.
Wow, there really is a lot of misinformation going around. At least a couple threads say you need stock radio. If the OTA is really coming soon I might as well wait for that to update the radio.
Thanks.

Confirmation of Receiving 2.2 OTA after Downgrade

I saw a few threads on this, but I wanted to clarify the procedure that I did, in the hopes of helping others.
My configuration was ShadowRom v0.0.1 with S-Off Rooted, etc.
NOTE: THIS PROCESS IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE S-OFF ONLY-
1. I downloaded an original 2.1 PB31IMG.zip and put it on my SD card
2. Power off the phone and then hold the volume-down button and press power again to boot into FastBoot
3. Wait for FastBoot to read that there is an update and then press Vol-UP to start the update
4. After the update is finished, it will asK to reboot. Reboot the phone and it will boot back into FastBoot mode again (I don't know why, but it is verified.) Then it will give you the option to use FastBoot again. Press power button to start that mode. Apply the SAME update a second time. Then after the process has completed, follow the instructions to reboot.
5. You will now be downgraded to 2.1. Sign in as you normally would and go through the setup motions. Then go to Settings-Applications-Development and turn on Development when USB connected.
6. Download the S-ON zip from unrevoked and put that on your SD card. ALSO MAKE SURE TO DELETE THE ORIGINAL PB31IMG.ZIP from your SDcard!!! Download the Unrevoked 3.21 (you guys are gods) tool and connect to your pc to root the phone again.
7. Once this process is completed and you are in the clockwork recovery, go to flash zip from SDcard and flash the S-ON zip file that you put on your SD in the previous step.
8, Reboot your phone and go back to your normal Rosie with the clock, etc.
9. Download the 2.1 RUU that is labeled RUU_IncredibleC_Verizon_WWE_1.22.605.2_Radio_1.00.03.04.06_hboot_0.79_release_161494_NoDriver_0514.exe
10. Run this RUU with your phone connected. This will update the ROM from 1.22.605.0 to 1.22.605.2... at least in my case. Other PB31IMG.zip files may contain lower versions.
NOTE: The purpose of running the RUU is because you had to have root to flash the S-ON tool and now you need to flash a RUU to have the original Recovery... The easy way.
11. After you run the RUU and it flashes your phone with an update, log in like you normally would handle the setup and connect to WIFI to setup your google account. At some point, shortly after the setup, you will have a notification to install the 2.2 upgrade. From this point just follow the directions. This process DOES take a while and it will boot the phone over and over and display screens of a brightly lit phone and no words, OVER AND OVER.
I hope this helps people who are concerned about warranty issues that are related to legitimate hardware problems and need to have S-ON and a normal recovery and ROM that is stock. Thank you to XDA and everybody. I have been on here since my G1 and JesusFreke and Haykuro and TheDude. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to say where I was pulling the files from, but I'm sure that they will be easy to find for serious users.
Red.
-God Bless.-
Wouldn't it be the same if I s-on ed and then RUUed to 2.2?
As far as I know the two updates are almost identical. However there are some minor differences. The purpose of this thread was to make sure there aren't any at all and to verify receipt of stock OTA. As far as I can tell you have to have stock recovery AND S-ON because otherwise your 2.1 Rom will show as being up to date.

Edit: spelling.
You say there is a minor difference between the RUU 2.2 and the OTA 2.2.
What is it? I want to know as I haven't found any. I already know the major difference between the OTA and RUU is that the OTA can only be applied if you have the correct radio, hboot, recovery, and android OS.
Please explain as I have yet to find any thread that gives a detail list of the differences. I mean both the OTA and the RUU share the same build number. If there is a difference between them then the build number should be different.
Also I would like to add that according to the news that has been posted about conflippers website http://shipped-roms.com/ (Updated: Is now not owned by him but by PPCGeeks)
The the rules that HTC put on him is that he is not allowed to host test builds. He is allowed to host the files of the official releases.
This should also mean the the RUU that is hosted their is the correct build that is on our phones.
These instructions confuse me. How is this different from the "get back to stock" thread?

God, I just KNEW I shouldn't have even tried to root... Please help =(

I recently got back a warranty swap Nexus One with an old version of android (2.2) and thought to myself "Hell, I might as well try rooting for once since it the 1-click method doesn't unlock the bootloader and you can always go back right?" Wrong
Well, I updated the radio as part of the Cyanogen 6.1 installation to radio version 5.12.00.08 and now that I don't want to be rooted anymore I can't seem to get the radio version back to normal to what it should be on 2.2.1
The 2.2.1 radio should be: Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
But when I updated to 2.2.1 it stayed the same: Baseband version 32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08
Have I screwed up my radio? I just want to get my phone back to normal please help

Does the phone still function? Making calls, sending texts.. etc?
If so, then whats the problem? The radio update was probably included in the ROM you flashed, if you're experiencing problems, search the forum for the Radio you want and instructions on how to flash
Be careful though, you can brick your phone when flashing a radio.. so make sure you read the instructions..
Good Luck

2 things I am worried about:
1. Before I rooted and changed the radio, I could check for system updates and it would say I could to update to 2.2.1 ota... Now, after I unrooted and got it back to stock 2.2, I would check system updates and it no longer gave me the option to update to 2.2.1 (I had to manually do this)
This worries me since I don't want to miss out on all future ota updates if my radio has been screwed up when I flashed one earlier.
2. Radio has been slower since upgrading manually to 2.2.1 but still having the old radio in place.
Isn't the each radio optomized for the particular android build?
Also what about rooting causes the phone not to get the new ota update? Is it the changing of its radio?
What country is yor phone? And with what build did it came after warranty?
My guess the radio is just part of the update (if you flashed a stock rom)
I recently bought my nexus in holland it came with FRF91
And 5.08.00.04 radio so
Radio isn't per build.
There was a major change to adjust to Froyo in 4.06 radio, all the above are compatible with it, all the 4.04 and below are compatible with Eclair and not suitable for Froyo.
2.2.1 includes 5.08 anyway. Your not getting OTA doesn't have anything to do with radio.
You can flash any radio you want when you're rooted, using the guide found in Wiki.
Yeah I've benefited from newer radios. Dont sweat it your rooted, this is good.

It's the rom and recovery.
I really would not get stressed out about this. Worst case scenario is that you have to come on xda every so often and flash the update manually.
LOL, if ur on CM6 u already have 2.2.1 and worrying about future otas, root user update to latest version normally before unrooted people and u should have to problem updating, if u want to revert back to the old boring stock version just flash one of the shipping roms in bootloader by renaming them to PASSIMG.zip

1) From where did you upgrade to 2.2.1?
if you upgraded from rom manager or any ROM given by developer, they remove the radio and provide it as a separate update file.
http://www.tap3w0rm.com/hosted/android/radios/nexus-1/FRF50-radio-4_06_00_12_7.zip is the update for radio you want.
2) However, Radio update is not what you want. "Recovery" is what you want. Recovery is a piece of software that allows you to flash custom ROMS. did you install Amon's recovery or Clockwork (from ROM Manager) recovery?
You will not get OTA if you have one of these custom recoveries. you will need the stock recovery.
3) In short, you need to flash your phone with a completely stock google ROM.
follow these instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
hmmm interesting...what makes you wanna unroot besides OTA? From what I see that's virtually no advantage to go back to stock rom
If you really want official OTAs, just make sure you check xda often when those are pushing out. There will be stock OTA updates hanging around.
Try this:
http://djmcnz.batteryboss.org/Kang-o-rama/froyo/radio/froyo-radio-update-signed.zip
Flash it from custom recovery. It will reboot, unpack the radio, reboot again in a few minutes, and you should end up back on the 4.06 radio. For what it's worth.
If you want to go back to totally stock unrooted, the most complete way to do so is using a PASSIMG file.

I installed Clockwork recovery when I first did the Cyanogen flash so how do I know if I still have it on my phone blocking OTA updates?
I had an old 2.2.1 update.zip on my SDcard from an old Nexus One that I sent in through a warranty swap.
Then I powered off and did the whole Volume Down + Power button.
I get the screen with the 3 androids on skateboards and clicked on Recovery
I press on recovery
When I see the triangle with exclamation mark I press power button + volume up and the only options I see are reboot system now, install update.zip from sd card, factory reset, wipe cache
I click on install update.zip (2.2.1) and reboot system now so the phone reboots but I still am stuck with the old radio. How do I know if I have stock recovery and will get OTA updates from now on?

On my phone this is what I get in bootloader mode...
I start up the phone holding down the trackball, and I get the Fastboot with the skateboards. The first menu option, BOOTLOADER, is highlighted. I press Power and I get to the HBOOT screen (also with skateboarding androids). I wait 5-10 seconds and it checks for a PASSIMG on SD. Since I don't have one, it finds nothing and returns me to HBOOT.
Or alternately I boot while holding volume down and I get HBOOT directly. In 5-10 seconds it checks for PASSIMG. The only time it won't do that is if my SD is not installed.
You're saying that on yours it doesn't check for PASSIMG at all?
I am in a somewhat similar boat (though not exactly), a colleague of mine purchased a used Nexus One off of fleebay and it came rooted running Cyanogen 6 with Clockwork Recovery (for the Recovery Image).
My colleague wants it to be completely stock (which I do not understand as I find Cyanogen 6 to be far better) and asked me the resident Android guy if I could help.
I figured PASSIMG.zip was the way to go and downloaded the stock rom from developer.htc.com and renamed it PASSIMG.zip. I put the PASSIMG.zip file on his SD card and booted into the bootloader. It checks the PASSIMG.zip image but does not offer me option to install it. It simply checks it and then offers me the normal 4 options.
Any thoughts?
Dan
Read the Wiki, it has specific reference to FRG83 stock ROM now, which refuses to work in PASSIMG mode.

Dan

Try as update.zip through custom recovery? Then clear the custom recovery by flashing stock one...then delete superuser.apk + unroot?

It's the rom and recovery.

Actually, it's just the ROM. Even if you have a custom recovery: a rooted, stock ROM will still receive OTA updates...
Yes but on quite a few custom recoveries, it will fail to install due to the signature.

True. If you are using anything earlier than Amon_RA 1.8 or the latest ClockworkMod, it won't install.

Returning to stock completely, clarification questions.

Hi guys,
I'd like to return my G2 to stock....completely stock and I have a few questions to make sure I'm doing this right (as I've heard that simply installing an officially signed ROM can screw things up).
Right now, I've done everything using the gfree method to get radio, s-off, and even the engineering hboot installed.
My question then becomes, should I follow the instructions as per wiki on returning to stock, or do I follow this guide?
My next question is then, is there anything specific that I should do first? Like remove hboot first, and then follow either of the above guides? And if I hve to remove hboot, how would I go about doing that (I tried searching, but I wasn't able to find anything).
If anyone could guide me on the matter, Id really appreciate it.
I'd like confirmation on the best and most up-to-date guide on this as well. Thanks
Just follow the guide that you linked to in your thread. You don't need to mess with hboot. As long as you follow the guide correctly you will overwrite the engineering hboot with the stock hboot.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Since you used gfree, you'll need to either restore the partition 7 backup or use gfree to S-ON and set your CID back.
Then follow something like the guide you linked to in order to flash the correct PC10IMG for your phone (as stated earlier, this will also get rid of your engineering HBOOT).
If you had one of the later phones that came with the OTA preinstalled, update your phone with it after the flash is done.
Format your SD card from your settings and then enter the bootloader one more time to do a factory rest.
You should then be completely back to how the phone was when you first got it (with the exception of subsidy unlock if you didn't have the original partition 7 backup from gfree---unlocking your phone is allowed by most carriers though, so shouldn't be a problem).
Thank you for that information. In which order do I do this? Restore the partition first (how would I do this?), or do I install the stock ROM first? Or...?
As you see, I'm confused as to the order of how I would go about doing this assuming I followed the gfree method through and through
Currently, I have an original nandroid backup through clockwerk. Would I "restore" that backup first in the recovery menu, followed by restoring the original gfree backup partition?
My biggest worry currently is that I can't put any stock rom on the phone due to the engineered hboot causing a booting loop problem (something I read on a sticky or something?)? Because based on the Wiki, I need to install the stock ROM first before reinstating the backup gfree partition.
Again, thank you everyone thus far for helping me out with my questions. I do hope that you guys can still answer my remaining questions!

Hi!
My original guide how to go back to stock can be found here: http://www.thinkthinkdo.com/trac/project1/wiki/back_to_stock
It is absolutely up to date and i did this myself several times.
There is only one important prerequisite before you follow this guide: You need to be radio S-OFF before you start this.
The engineering-hboot only causes problems if you are not radio S-OFF. So if you used gfree to get radio S-OFF the eng-hboot will not be a problem.
There is no need to install the nandroid backup before you do this procedure.

Thanks for that but I have successfully returned the phone to stock already
I just used my nandroid backup followed by manually setting the Cid back to tmob010. After that, I iinstalled the stock recovery and used the guide I linked earlier by starting at procedure 2.
In short, it was a very eclectic approach and I did what made sense to me. Lawl. It all worked out ok. Back to the good old hd2 for now
