I have the 003 hardware version and my friend just bought a new EVO and it's 004. Only difference I saw right off the bat was the back was solid black and mine is dark gray. Are there any significant differences between the 3 versions that makes it better than the other? Just curious.

I've only done a little bit of reading between the 0003 and 0004 versions because I own them both. Seems the 0004 uses a different component for the camera, has a slightly raised power button, and I can actually see a difference with the screens... I like the 0004 much more.
Don't know much more than that! I know they possibly fixed an issue with the screen from 0002 to 0003. I guess with it popping up, and not being sealed down properly.
Cool thanks for the input.

Battery covers are made by Samsung. There are about 4 different types running around...I would know with as many carbon fiber battery covers as I've made.
The only difference between 0003 & 0004 is the camera. This is the first I've read of about the screen.
Sent from my Warm twopointtwo EVO.
That's what I figured cause when I was comparing mine with my friend's, I couldn't really tell the difference between the two screens. I should've tested the camera.

I am sure there is nothing new about the screens. Come on now they are not SUPER AMOLED! It's just the regular old Epson and Nova. For those who see a screen difference, you are probably accustomed to the nova screen.
On fresh 3.4 you get horrible battery life compared to fresh 3.3 Its due to the difference in hardware. I doubt the camera itself would be draining all that power. There's got to be something else
i have 003 and im good with it no problems
002, FTW!

My 0004 doesn't have light leakage, whereas my previous one did (not sure which hardware version that one was).
How do you tell the difference?

In panels?
Using Android SDK, open a cmd and browse to the SDK installation "Tools" folder.
For me: "cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools"
Then enter: "adb shell dmesg > evoinfo.tx"
Find the "evoinfo.txt" file in your "Tools" folder and search it for Epson & Nova.
It will have one or the other.
Model numbers are in the Settings/About Phone/Hardware Information.

I definitely had light leakage on my 0003. It was quite bad. Nothing on my 0004, except I have a small hole that light peaks out of near my capacitive buttons. No big deal...
The charging port is much more solid on the new phone.

I am also curious on if there is a advantage with the new camera in 004?

Is the light leakage a legitimate warranty claim on Sprint? Personally I don't really mind the leakage, and I don't know of a significant reason to be afraid of it. I can only see if when I'm looking into the button area from the top of the phone. I'm not going to take it in unless there's something serious to be worried about, that's all.
I got a new Evo, that was shipped out on 11/04. It was a 003.
It's got some light leakage.
If I return it for another one, I wonder if I'll get a 004. (Some that had phones shipped on the same day and even before got the 004.)
It would suck if I just got another 003 with the same problem.

Anyone gotten one of the new evos from sprint.com that they just got in stock this week?
My 3 replacements showed up today, but they're at the billing address. I called at 5PM MST yesterday and they were there at 10am this morning - talk about UPS fast.
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else had gotten one yet and if it was hardware 0004. I guess I'll find out tomorrow afternoon when I go pick them up and report back on here about the differences since we have 3 0002 with light leakage and mine with the speaker kazoo effect. Haha.
Please keep us updated on if this is a different hardware version or not. I'll be replacing my 003 come Monday because of light leakage around three outer edges (but mostly because of a scratch and i want a shiny new one now that my screen protector is in haha).
Mine is only 4 days old and it says hardware version 0003. Was on waiting list and they got in 15 on Wed
0003
I ordered 2 evo's from Sprint.com as soon as they got back in stock on Tues 6/29 about 4pm pst, Got them on Thur (7/1) They a Hardware version 0003.
They were better,any light leakage?

Google "Olestra" , I'd bet that's why.
So far as 004's, I have a Novatek 002 with very slight light leakage but my buddy at da Shack has a brand new one coming in for me...If it's an 004 I'll grab it, if it's an 002 I'm pretty sure I'll take it...but if it's an 003 who knows what screen it has, though I'm sure he'll let me check it first.
But for some reason I have very high hopes for 004's, if they ever get produced.
I just got a replacement Evo cause I pricked mine its version 3, flat black battery cover, battery with a gold or silver strip(don't remember which it is) and no light leakage so far. But my battery blows!!!!!! Terribly!!!!!! Worse than with the solid red battery. Idk what to do about the battery I've tried all the tricks nothing seems to work

no problem so far (battery life is reasonable considering i m using live wallpaper and slide show photo frame)
I'll keep you all posted later today when I get the 3 new ones. I'll compaire them with the old ones, too and probably take pics of any differences.
Does anyone know what I can keep from the old ones? I'd really like to keep the chargers, battery covers and batteries if I can get away with it. They'll be going back to sprint.com, so I'm not sure what their pollocy is.
Also, how should I back up the current phones? They're all rooted, so I just need to back up the apps and settings. I know I've read that all the settings are saved on your google account, but is every single setting in the settings menu really saved, or just your email, facebook, ect. accounts saved?

Google just backs up contacts emails, calendar, that sort of stuff. Titanium backup should do the trick with apps and settings. I'm not sure if a nandroid backup would work, or I would suggest that. But I think the nandroid backup will only work on the device that was used to make the backup. Correct me if I'm wrong.. Haven't tried this yet.
Ordered on teusday night by phone thru sprint, and got my it the next day no shipping no acctivation fee. Its an 0003 with the epson screen. Man this phone rocks!!! Iphone can kiss my customizable butt
Small update: Just unboxed the 3 replacement phones. Non of them have the screen popping up problem and it almost seems as if they are sunk down a little bit more than my first one. All 3 have the new epson screen, which I don't think looks quite as good, but it's more of a true black, not a purpley black.
They're all 0003. Also, if you look under your battery, the number in the bottom right is something something - something XA, my first evo (0002) just said A there.
And all 3 have the new battery with the silver foil around them with sharper corners.
For now, that's all I can see that's different. I'll update more later.

Yes, I would say all. The 3 that I just unboxed all had a little bit different tent to them, but nothing like the 0002hw screens.
Not really I got mine yesterday with a Build date of June 16 and its Novatec.
I was one of the lucky evo launchers with the unlucky hardware version 002, took sprint all up to a week ago to receive my replacement. First thing I checked was hardware version and viola 003. If you haven't guessed yet my issue was the bleeding in the screen on white. I was surfing the net last night when out of nowhere, a little bleeding started to happen. Im to assume I have the old screen in this one. I'm going to get another replacement, but has this happened to any of they 003 with new screens?

I did not realize 002 was a bad thing. I was quite pleased that mine was 002, and still am, it's been a rock.
I have the 003 right now, don't see any problems with it.
It was the screen variations the two use, 002 and some in 003 have the original screens that are prone to the issue im having, white/lighter spots that grow in size. A cosmetic issue really but I for one didn't buy this phone to have that. Sprint us giving me the run around now so maybe this extended time will assure the epson screen vs the novatech

My 3 week old 003 has theses issues:
-will not charge unless powered off
-battery used to be fine, but now drains in 8 hours.
(reinstalling the OS did not fix this)
-dust under screen
-speaker blown (rattles)
-etc.
Waiting for a replacement as we speak.
What's the big deal? I've got a 0002 model, complete with light leakage, and it doesn't impact performance in any way. It also gives me a permanent scapegoat in case I would like to get a new EVO down the line.

I have some light leakage and its only noticeable at night. Like you, I'm using it as my scape goat if necessary in the future.
But it is true, if you are purchasing a product, why would you want to buy a defected one at full price?

Like I said, I see it as less of a defect and more as "free insurance."
I had only owned my Epic a week and this is what happened to the screen! I thought I was seeing things at first, then it got BAD. My wife captured this short video with her Evo before I took it in and traded it for a new unit.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm almost 2 weeks into my replacement unit and everything's fine so far.
That screen seems faulty to me.
Edit:
Or maybe even a loose wire?

Looks like a connector to the screen may have been loose :/..
I had it happen. Took it back and exchanged it even though after rebooting it appeared fine. I believe it was an overheating graphics processor (I've had similar happen on a computer).
At first, the guy at Best Buy was hesitant to replace it. I told him I didn't mind if he did a hard reset on it so he could rule out a software conflict (personally, I was confident it was hardware-related). Less than 3 minutes after being reset it was doing it again.
Now, I'll probably root it have some real fun!

I am having that issue right now! Anytime I even slide the keyboard out a little bit, my colors go all sorry and my wallpaper looks like old PC's with 256 colors! Lol or safe mode! With the amount of phones sold there are going to occasionally be defective ones.

I've had a similar issue, except much more subtle. Best way I can describe it: There will be random changing horizontal color bars that overlay on top of what is on the screen at about 90% transparency. It looks like something is interfering with the video output to the AMOLED. This only happens when the phone appears to be processing something like the loading screen for the Android Market or during the melody test in the *#0*# menu. It also appears to be related somehow to the battery charge level. The lower the charge, the more the effect. I'm just noting this issue here, and kind of wondering if anyone else has this issue. It doesn't really bother me at all, to be honest.

I think I was having the same problem.
It only seemed to happen when the battery was nearly depleted, and even then only when the screen was on high brightness and displaying nearly all white.
Seems to me like at low charge levels the battery can't supply enough power to keep most of the pixels white at high brightness, so it starts getting distorted.
Go to sprint service and repair store and open a ticket. They will either charge you $35 or it will be free if you're under tep, so long that you have no liquid on the device and it's not rooted. I'm a tech at one of the stores.

odd that motorola would place it like that
it is an inset reader attached to the board with a ribbon cable, as part of a button. Some sit slightly different than others, it is common on everything that has this type of multifunction setup.

id say its less a build quality issue and more a design issue, since the glass isnt glued to the screen. I have myself seen 3-4 atrix, all except one had either major dust or at least 1-2 specks.
and on top a software bug that scared the hell out of me, seeing dead and stuck pixels only in the CAMCORDER mode.
I should consider myself lucky then, no dust and my fingerprint/power button is straight. However, it is a refurbished phone (perhaps one that was returned by one of you!) so they might have taken a bit more care in reassembly. Who knows... Maybe it is best to buy second hand sometimes, or I'm just plain lucky

Hi all! Well I finally exchanged my One because of the red noise issue that has been well described here on xda, so I thought I'd post my observations on how a phone built in March compares to one built in June.
First one: manufactured in Taiwan, March 9th
New one: manufactured in Taiwan, June 25th
First of all, I'm happy to report the red noise is gone feels like freedom! Hopefully it doesn't develop again but so far nothing I've done has caused the noise (putting it down on a table, using when warm (<35 degrees) etc.) So hopefully this means htc changed their sensor in some way so as to prevent the issue which is clearly hardware and can't be fixed through software updates for most people. The new sensor was manufactured on June 19th. Considering 86% of users report the issue http//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507 it's pretty unlikely I just got lucky on this one (why I am optimistic new sensors are different).
The build quality is also better than my first. The first wasn't bad compared to many people who had gap and screen problems, but there were some overhangs and poorly machined parts. The new one is perfect... Completely. So again hopefully this indicates they have improved their manufacturing and QC processes. Considering how prevalent these issues were at launch, it's pretty unlikely I got lucky twice rather than them improving QC IMO).
The display is also better. This probably isn't a batch specific thing since they use multiple suppliers (2 that I know of - sharp with renesas controller and JDI with Samsung controller). The first was a JDI and had very good brightness, black level, and a cooler white balance. The new one is also a JDI. It has a Warmer white balance though (I prefer cooler, even though warmer ones like the new one produce more accurate colors) and the contrast has improved quite a bit. Brightness is roughly the same between the two. Normally warmer white balance is seen in the Sharp displays from what I understand http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202869. Perhaps it's not as warm as a sharp panel would be though since they seem pretty rare and I've never encountered one.
They seem to have changed the vibration motor because this one doesn't shake the table when it goes off seriously the first one was excessive. It also made an annoying noise when it went off. The new one is much quieter and smoother. It feels more like how my old iPhone 4s was (if you've had one, you know this is a good thing!)
They've changed the usb cable - the ends are rubber now instead of the hard plastic that was on the first one. Small change, makes it feel better to me.
So overall everything seems to be a change for the positive. I'm not sure if I got the STM hdr mic or not, though since the judgement was passed in April I'd be inclined to think they would still have decent stock a month later at least. Hopefully stock holds out! So if you've been waiting to exchange for fear of getting one with poor build quality or a camera sensor that's just as bad, maybe these observations indicate that it's safe now. I really hope so...
If there's something else you'd like to know, I'd be happy to try and compare

How did you get a replacement phone? i sent mine to htc repair in the uk for the purple camera issue and am expecting it back on tuesday. They haven't said anything so as far as i know I assume i'll have the same phone with a new sensor?
Would love a replacement seen as some edges and the screen is not totally flush! Although would hate to lose my hdr mic!

Yours should be fine when it's returned (hopefully). Mine was a mess when I sent it in for repair (9th March build date). When I got it back, the screen was flush, gaps were gone, overhangs were gone etc.
Camera problem will be fixed, if they give you a new sensor (august build date onwards). Anything before that seems as though the problem returns eventually.
Happy to say that after 2 months with the replacement camera sensor, being heavily used, everything is still working correctly
Hope you have as much luck as I did with the UK repair center

Hey thanks for this, settled my nerves a little! I'm impressed they sorted out all the little gaps and problems on your phone! Glad to hear its in perfect condition man :good:. The repair guy just put on the form 'camera malfunction' so i wrote next to it '(purple tinting)' i hope they've taken it into account. I also noted beside that in pen the sim card not always detected issue that has been more prevalent lately - do you think they will fix that too? Is it proven they have sorted out the issue in the new sensors?
Also, they took received my device and returned it at the end of the day the next day. How long did yours take? Is there a form telling you what they fixed or did to repair it?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!

I exchanged mine through best buy since I got the product exchange warrantee. It couldn't have been easier actually, I just had to take it in, let them reset it and confirm it was still purple after and they gave me a new one 10min later. I've never heard of someone having it go so smoothly through htc so perhaps it's best to go through a carrier or store if possible.
Really really really hoping the problem doesn't come back since this is a June sensor...

Unfortunately because i bought mine brand new unbranded from ebay i can't take it to a carrier... However it seems that HTC UK do a decent job of repairs and haven't seen many complaints. spikeydoo2006 has given me hope as it sounds as though he's had a great experience! I wish htc would publicly acknowledge a hardware fault in the early models so that they can confirm the problem has been fixed! I love htc phones since i've had my desire hd and one x - its disappointing to have to send my one in for repair!
Well, that didn't take long...the noise problem with the camera is back and getting worse with time just like before. Also just like before heat is causing it and making it worse. I posted pics and a more complete breakdown of these lovely new developments here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47136748#post47136748
I'm beginning to accept that there is and never will be such a thing as a "good" sensor for this camera...
Took some good damn pictures at night when I first got the phone.
Now almost every dark pictures goes to full red mode. And if having it exchanged only reports the problem for another few weeks...

I'm really puzzled and confused by all these red/purple tint issues with people's one's. Although I don't think the night shots a're exactly great, I can't get my phone to show these tints.
What I have noticed on my replacement phone, is that the beats audio letters have started to run off just weeks after getting the phone and the screen isn't quite as good as my first one.

What did you do to get yours exchanged and with who - HTC or carrier? My Sprint One is new (had it less than 2 weeks) but manufactured FA37SS906etc (July 25) and has the red problem. Posted a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514330

I always try to avoid carriers as much as possible so I got it through best buy. I also made sure to get a product replacement plan on it so I only had to show them the problem, let them do a restore, then leave 10min later with a new phone. I've been following the primary thread about this issue and most people who go through htc seen to have to wait a long time to get it back.
Read through your post, and yup, that's the problem 85% of us have. If you think it will go away it won't. Your options are to replace the phone or the sensor but I have yet to hear of someone who did this and had it fixed permanently (the new sensor also eventually failed). Who knows, maybe someday they'll make a good one...
