Hey guys!
I am planning on getting the Desire HD next week(if it's available) and would like to hear some opinions...Coming from a Hero and a Desire I am used to having a large community behind my phone, making great and many things available for it.Do you think DHD will have such a community behind it?I for one am worried that so few people are visiting its forums(most out of curiosity) and that its development section is so small. Is it just too early to tell?I had bought all the phones I had until now quite some time after they had been launched(the Hero last Christmas and the Desire this July).
So what do you guys think?
If you're looking for things like CM support you'll probably have to wait until there's a permanent root method. I think it's a bit too early for such things now though, new devices take a while to get through to devs or for a new dev to come onto the scene.
To be honest with you I think with the Sense UI and overall performance I get I will be happy to run stock with root. I've not been able to say that about a phone before, feels kinda nice.

Thanks for posting btw!
Is it possible to get a build of meego running on the fascinate? There seems to alpha builds of this running on other phones, one such as the nexus s. Seems like pretty promising software, am running it on my netbook. If your not sure what meego is then best google it. Shouldn't be much different to run, being a linux based os. Any clues, ideas, thoughts, ranting ravs of android being superior or acts of god about this being in the wrong section?

I think it's hard enough for our devs to port cyangenmod and gingerbread right now, let alone another port. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but the devs are already doing a lot of work.
Rockin' DJ05, Minimal Icognito, Clocked at 1.3Ghz
Oh yes of course, in no way am I suggesting that meego get a build anytime before the current projects at hand but more so if it is even possible and would a dev ever consider it for a project. I'm even more so certain that the gingerbread development might have to be the stepping stone before it can even be accomplished. We are finally getting a taste of froyo through kaosinate, punk.kaos is very talented. Maybe once he finishes with froyo and his contributions to gingerbread he might be a good dev to tackle this. In kaosinate we stand, Can anyone say punkmee?

in certain areas? Things like roms and overclocking kernels our developers are on top of, no question about it
From time to time, I wonder into the other android device's development sections of xda and think what if we had those developments. Take for example the Nexus S, they have a sound patch that improves the sound quality and ext4 optimizations to increase performance in Gingerbread. In the Desire HD development section they have a performance enhanced kernel for CM7. Just a few examples of such developments I see in other sections, that gets me thinking.
Dont get me wrong I appreciate all the hard work and effort that our current developers go through to provide us "normal" users with kernels and roms for our devices. I wish I had the time and knowledge of the Android system to get into development, to help out.
Just sharing my thoughts and would like to hear others opinion on this, not criticizing or trying to create a issue.
I believe that there is in fact a huge rom development out there. I can see why your frustrated with certain things not being there, but you have to remember how hard it was to crack root on this phone, therefore it is harder to do certain things to it. Where as the galaxy s series is easy as pie to root and hack, along with the evo and older phones. Just mosey on other phone forums and notice the lack of development that they have. There are other great phones, like the evo shift 4G and others that aren't getting love like this phone.

haha try working with something with a weak following, like a Samsung Transform. All I really see is guys complaining there's no XDA sub-board. There's an SDK but it all sucks especially because I'm used to how wonderful my G2's support is.
There's a decent following for the Vibrant, but zero cyanogen for it, and I doubt there ever will be. I do like my Axura rom, but it makes me sad I can't cyanogen it. Which makes me appreciate cyanogen even more though, because I see that it has sooooo much more than other roms.

I was trying to find the XDA forum for the Moto Cliq for my sister, and realized on doesn't even exist, lol. But I do miss the Vibrant forums a little bit. When I had my Vibrant I ran Nero/Bionix and it was the tits. I am new to CM but having Gingerbread gives me wood, so I'm as happy as a pig in poop with my G2.

Yep, I tried to help a friend with a Cliq and found that too. He was sooo excited for his 2.1 OTA that was super late from the initial promise date that he was expecting. And I found just about zero following for that thing.
I ran bionix for a bit, and I think overall I prefer the Axura over it, except the newest one doesn't have HD Camcorder as of now

What up RatDude? Haha, I had a cliq before this phone and got it when it was just released. I rooted that thing since day one flashing all kinds of buggy roms. That's what started it all. They've come a long way. I used modmymobile.com and they have some pretty good development, and some really good roms. The thing doesn't compare to my G2 though!

wasn't modmymobile originally modmymoto? Before the miracle of android I modded a RAZR, SLVR, and KRZR which also subsidy unlocked... but the aftermarket "rom" on it sucked ass lol. It even included some text messages with some weird lady in the flash. Was like a personal NAND

I love development and the Android community. So much choices to satisfy anyone's flavor. Here in the G2/Desire Z forums, I believe there is plenty of development. QUALITY development.
In the G1 forums, when it was still really popular, you would just see the forums flooded with all different kinds of ROMs, from several devs. I tried out tons of them, but none of them, except a handful were well made (Cyanogen, JAC, Haykuro, to name a few). Pretty much all the half assed ones were all basic copies of all the other ones, or rip offs of the good ones. In addition there were only two types: stock and sense.
With our forums, we have so many possibilities. Stock, modified stock, froyo, gingerbread, sense, miui. Our hardware can actually support all this too and run well, unlike on other devices.
It doesn't end at roms. We have kernels, modifications, hacks. Anything to make your phone unique. And may I say, our processor is an overclocking champion. I can load up the 1.8 Ghz kernel and run it all day every day, stable. Now, I don't do it, but it's nice to have the option.
In addition to all of this, our phone is still relatively current. Next gen snapdragon processor, nearly 2 gigs of accessible rom, 512 megs of ram, decent screen, stock froyo. I don't see why the G2 wouldn't receive a 2.3 OTA.
As time progresses, I can see more and more devs pop up to try and take the reigns of development for this forum. It's a matter of when, not if.

I don't really feel that way at all. There are the roms that most consider relevant, the sense roms (which has been consolidated into virtuous) and the cyanogenmod team that is so large now that most of the top developers have teamed up. Sure the number of roms are down but the quality is top notch

I agree to a certain point. If it wasn't for the Devs then this phone wouldn't see anything. There is barely any support from the manufacturers (ie. docks, car docks). They released the G2/Dezire Z then the Nexus S comes out and it's a forgotten phone from their standpoint.

Yeah, modmymoto was the best site around for Moto modding. Good to see an original Moto modder here. I also modded Motorolas, I modded two RAZR V3's . I loved the fact that you could seriouly mod EVERY LITTLE thing; from small stuff like removing the anoying buzz noise when the phone is near a speaker through a seem edit to stuff like changing the housing to all gold, I saw this one guy put a see-through housing on his RAZR V3 wand made his keypad gold and all the sound up and down buttons down or some other bits of gold parts in it. I loved modding Moto's, I remember that I had an iPhone theme with an iPhone icon pack and an iPhone font, I always used the Mulifex way of flashing, I liked that way the most. I loved the fact that I could change my service provider to 'Beast-Mobile' and change the names of the items in the menu, like for example I had my phone book says "my name's Homies" like "KoolKidsKlub's Homies" I wish that I could change stuff like that on an Android phone.
I've modded stuff like this for as long as I can remember XDA rules, lol. I once bricked a Moto Rokr E8, but I think that's about the only thing I've genuinely bricked haha. I always tell people it usually takes talent to brick an android. I just scored a Vibrant because it was "bricked" and I resurrected it.
[email protected] the post that if this phone didn't have Dev's, it wouldn't see anything at all. I haven't seen any docks for it, yet there are dock settings. Yet the phone I do have a dock for has no dock settings
Can anyone tell my why the mytouch slide development scene is so dead? Everytime I check there is only about 14 people view where as the ancient G1 has over 130 people every time. Filled with no roms that should even be possible on the g1. I even notice this in the droid forums as well but the slide is much faster than the droid yet they have a huge dev scene with a lot of AOSP development going on and they even have the popular miui rom. Anyone care to shed some light on this and give your thoughts?

We dead scares for almost 4 months last year. There might be an answer in one of those 3 threads.
I'm thinking a lot of the developers that were actually doing things got better phones and just moved on. There's still people out there with little surprises popping up... But yeah, it's kind of quiet around here.
I'd like to see an miui rom ;_;

hey biglo ik that is what it seems like, but on the contrary, dev for the slide specifically might not be as active as Galaxy S, but as sefEXE said, suprises pop up. U hav to do a little searching to find what you want! So far i have found many things like small time roms and even HD HVGA hacked games (like nova, fast 5, etc.) on these very forums. more than likely they will be posted in a forum with a phone that is similar to the MT3GS, or in the android forum itself! trust and believe though that the android community has not forgotten the thing that put it on the map!
but i agree with sefEXE, miui rom wud b awesome
p.s. i am studying up on how to become a dev! may take time but i can do it , so expect the rom of a lifetime in the coming months (that is, if life doesnt come in and take all the freetime in my life away lol)
Thanks for the reply and good luck accomplishing your goal of becoming a dev. I was trying to learn how to theme but had to take a break.

I'm actually pretty pleased with the dev community here. it's become sort of a niche. I love my slide. I only wish it had a 1ghz processor. I think what we have here is quality over quantity. The devs that stick with the slide do it because they love it. The few stable roms we have are great.
agreed with digitaldreamer7 ... i guess we will feel better when chacha and salsa roms are totally working, i will use this for a long time if those roms are totally working
i came from the cliq community at simply-android.com and their ROM selection is crazy. There is seriously over 50 ROMS to choose from and have some of the nicest ppl ever. i bought a slide bc i wanted cyanogen on my phone. and now the cliq has a fully functioning CM7 ROM. who would of thought.

Cliq was a real ****ty phone though, and now the Cliq 2 has no roms.
Now this has been asked repeatedly (Just google touchwiz 4 ux) but have we made any progress-no. This thread is a call to ask if any people have heard about a port being assembled, i have by many devs, but there has been no known progress. If anyone knows how to port touchwiz or has started to port touchwiz, could that person please post here. If this post is mis-spoken or unnecessary please delete.
hate to say this being that I love my xoom and after having played with UX I'd love to see it on my tablet but...
we have the wrong tablet atm, dev community is pretty dead. Only one kernel now and one rom.. saddest thing EVER.
There was one kid previously religiously defending the dev community for the xoom saying, why would we need more?!
This kid is clearly, CLEARLY an idiot.
The dev team is pretty good. What holds us back is the lack of sdk. Icecream should change that. Our devs get everything needed for rooters to upgrade withing a day or so of the release, that's not bad. Either way, look at any honeycomb tablet... there aren't many roms or kernels floating around there.

To make you feel better, roms for other devices are sometimes based on the xoom files from what I can tell and have bugs too.
I'm saving another $600 to buy one of the quad core tabs next year so I'm fine if development doesn't kick off. I thought we would have tons of stuff to flash considering the xoom is the first honeycomb device.
idk if people would like to start a donation to buy some more devs a xoom? We did this in the mt4g forums when the phone was still new to jump start development. I would gladly donate to jump start some more development.
The official update for the 10.1 update is released.
I want touchwiz so bad, it has honeycomb enhancements but heavily integrated into the OS.
Umm... does anyone not understand that nothing like CyanogenMod will be made possible on the Xoom without the Honeycomb source code? The dev teams are not dead... and development has not stopped! But, there is just nowhere else to go from here given the situation due to the lack of the HC SDK.
Duh, there is only one Rom! Currently without the source from HC, the only possible things we can have would be a slightly modified and themed stock Rom experience. The tweaks and tools we all know and love from our phone custom Roms will not be made available until we have the source! And honestly since there is no HC source, I think that porting over something like Touchwiz to the Xoom is also impossible due to the current limitations... meaning it's a part of the OS... no source, no port.
I'm guessing that people don't seem to understand anything about the following terms:
Root, Superuser, ROM, Kernel, ClockworkMod, SDK - I highly suggest that people should really learn these basic and essential terms if they are going to be rooted on any Android device. Learn what they mean, how to make use of them properly, and what makes them special. Then maybe, just maybe... we all might be able to be on the same page. If you don't understand root, chances are that you should probably not be rooted... stick to the factory stock.
I do think that this thread was more than unnecessary. We have established the fact that without the Honeycomb source, nothing major will hit the dev scene as far as entire custom Roms with full tweaks, porting OS's, and such. We established this not long after the Xoom was launched in February. Google announced that they will be holding onto the HC source until further notice. It's been way old news for that long... wow! Why these types of threads keep poping up is puzzling... or maybe alarming... not sure which one.
diablo2224: So you are saying that only Xoom HC source code is missing?
Touchwiz UX has been ported to Iconia A500 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143368) so i don't think that missing HC source code is the problem.
EDIT: A quick search showed that it has been ported to Transformer also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGz-51qUH90

We all know that but it isn't preventing touch wiz from being ported to other honeycomb tablets without the source you say.
Nor do we have "Added PS3 support & alot USB HID devices", I would give anything for my PS3 to see the xoom.

And this is exactly what I'm talking about... other tabs are way better off.. I came from an Iconia thinking it would be better to be on a Xoom...
Who cares if those ROMs have some bugs.. our roms have bugs too... and all of them get resolved in time.. but when other tablets have way more going for them than the official dev tab, it makes you wonder why this dev community is dead.
The OP is saying that the Xoom is dead and that it has nothing to live for. He also is hinting that the dev teams suck and are not doing anything for the Xoom. Well, to make any progress above and beyond a stock Rom experience you MUST have the source! How can you say the dev teams are dead? They most certainly are not! Again, yes there is only one Rom for a reason... how much more can you possibly do to a stock Rom? Thus, you only need one great team in charge of that. Team Tiamat. That's all you need.
Maybe it can be possible to port TouchWiz over to the Xoom, but listen to this:
The Xoom is meant to be a Google stock experience! If you want this so badly, please go buy a Galaxy Tab and use that. I have no problem with TouchWiz. I love all Android devices. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is tight, and TouchWiz is also tight. I just prefer the Xoom over the other Honeycomb tablets because the devs cook up some awesome stuff since it's the official developers tablet of choice. Plus, I enjoy a full Google experience.
But, honestly here are your options:
Get a Galaxy 10.1 and quit your complaining, or wait for the source to be released when ICS launches. Then you can wait for the dev teams to create some awesome entire complete custom Roms that will probably have custom TouchWiz Roms ported over to all ICS devices. Until then, use the Team Tiamat Rom and theme it up with the TouchWiz theme like I have done with my Xoom. It can be found here: [Theme]TouchWiz for Tiamat 2.1
I am kind of the opposite. Every Android I have owned I couldn't wait for the Devs to strip Sense, Motoblur, etc.

Agreed!
By removing them we can make way for the dev teams to cook up a wonderful list of alternatives with all the tweaks that we desire. The full Google experience is the way to go! With this you can pick and choose what type of setup you want because it is stock vanilla.

It is pretty funny, 75% of the people that have bloat don't want it. 75% of the people that can't have it want it. I love stock android. I love having a ton of free resources when i start my device. I love having no bloat.
Tiamat and his team are due much respect. After all he released 3.2 for the 3g way ahead of Moto to count just some of what he has done. All with out "source".

That is impressive that they were able to do this without the HC source. I'm not sure what they did, but it was awesome! It was something that was possible without the source obviously, but some things are not possible without it. Team Tiamat is the boss. The OP must not have a brain to say that the dev teams are stupid and are not making any progress on Honeycomb and the Xoom.
