DHD community support? - Desire HD General

Hey guys!
I am planning on getting the Desire HD next week(if it's available) and would like to hear some opinions...Coming from a Hero and a Desire I am used to having a large community behind my phone, making great and many things available for it.Do you think DHD will have such a community behind it?I for one am worried that so few people are visiting its forums(most out of curiosity) and that its development section is so small. Is it just too early to tell?I had bought all the phones I had until now quite some time after they had been launched(the Hero last Christmas and the Desire this July).
So what do you guys think?

If you're looking for things like CM support you'll probably have to wait until there's a permanent root method. I think it's a bit too early for such things now though, new devices take a while to get through to devs or for a new dev to come onto the scene.
To be honest with you I think with the Sense UI and overall performance I get I will be happy to run stock with root. I've not been able to say that about a phone before, feels kinda nice.

Gingerbread and MT4G

MT4G is on its way, but I'm still hanging on to N1 - great phone with huge development support.
Hardware-wise MT4G is a superior phone to N1, but apart from that I'll be missing a lot from the development community. When will we see gingerbread, or soon to be unveiled honeycomb (Mar 2011?)... There is just so little going on with MT4G on the development side, I wonder why...

The development has just picked up a lot we were waiting on a video/camera bug to be fixed with all roms now that its fixed we have seen a huge jump in development. The N1 was slow at first as well time will heal it all

I'm new to MT4G; what is the camera/video bug?
This thread belongs in the general section.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
I can't wait for some love like the n1. I miss mine solely for the multiple choices of roms. Can't wait for something running 2.3 and putting the mt4g at its full potential. I'll be so happy.
we have 4 different roms (counting both DHD roms as 1) MIUI, CM, Iced, DHD and the phone hasn't been out that long, I think we are fine development wise. At least for now

I think I may actually take it easy on you so listen up. The phone has been out for what, maybe a month? The N1, well, Feb-Dec means 11 months. Yes, the N1 has a TON of development but it did not when it first dropped (I ordered one on release day). The N1 actually took a couple of months for true development. Hell, it was at least 4 months before we could even wake the stupid thing with the trackball. Anyways, just letting you know, development takes time. It's not like the developers have tons of money to waste on EVERY phone that comes out and tons of time to develop for them.
P.S. I still have my N1 that I mess with every day!
You're crazy if you think that development for this phone is "slow". It's been out less than 60 days and already has several viable roms. Honestly, take a chill pill and have some patience.
On the other hand, I know what it's like to be impatient I've been checking the forums compulsively to look for signs of gingerbread roms on the horizon. CM7 is shaping up quite nicely. They have everything worked out except that when you're recording a video it chops off the last few seconds. CANNOT WAIT!!!
In conclusion, Merry Christmas, and stick around the MT4G is a fantastic phone and has some super devs behind it.
I see no sense in these threads.
With eViL, Zink , grankin01, Gr8gorilla, teamsilence...think thats most of them, for the MT4G to be where its at in such a short time I say hats off to em.
Lets be like some of the other forums on XDA where they turn into demanding little pricks that act utterly ungrateful...or be thankful for what we get and shut it..
I think the development is moving at an awesome pace and will only get better over time. Hopefully some Devs got a MT4G today

You can always compile a rom your self just know what you are doing. If you want gingerbread then compile a rom based on cm 7 but be warned things wont work.

Can't wait for enom.
I'm waiting for Enom as well. I typically donate to him, so I'm leaving my phone stock until he's ready with a stable Gingerbread ROM.
.... It takes developers haveing a phone to be able to work on roms.... They cant just POOF, heres your rom.
And since the devs just got these phones in the last 2 weeks, and we already have 4 fully functioning roms.... Id say have some damn patience.
Agreed, we have seen a lot of progress given the short time the phones been out. But I don't think there needs to be repeated posts saying "have some damn patience." OP probably got the message the first time. If you're not adding to the conversation its probably better to give your typing fingers a rest. Otherwise you're just contributing to the cancerous ignorance that turns us against each other.

I think progress has been great considering the phones only been out a couple weeks! N1 took several months. I say hats off to the devs their work is great.

I tried to install the new gingerbread theme for my epic 4g, and I accidentally installed it twice, and now my phone is trying to run it, but since it was installed twice, it is forcing all of my applications closed. DHD rom development-what's going on?

Hey guys,what's up?
Well,as most(if not all) of you,I am enjoying this wonderful phone for almost a week now. However I've been watching the DHD forums since they started, when I had my Desire and my Hero only. Not that I am unhappy about something and everyone around here is pretty helpful and all,but I thought that such a device would get more attention.Especially 4.3 inchers from HTC(Leo and Evo) are very favoured by developers. For the DHD there are only a few roms and they don't get updated very frequently.
Does anyone know whether it is just too early or if I'll have to stick with it?Maybe it's just that I had the Hero and the Desire when they were all the rage and am used to that, but I don't think that's the case...
Well, the thread's open for discussion(civilised if possible ) and I'm waiting to here other people's thoughts on the matter!
With kind regards,
Apostolis

I believe it is still a bit early for mass-development.
Dont forget that the device has been in very short supply since its introduction.
Cheers
I too agree. Shortages globally may influence the lack of current interest. However, it would not really be interest...more like mass-interest. Developers have done a lot for this phone, there have been many users here making threads, such as the camera threads, battery life threads, and there are many replies and many more views. I believe there have been only a few developers who decided to get the Desire HD. Why? Some may regard the Desire HD as not a big enough reason to ditch the Evos, Desires and HD2s! I'm sure this phone will boost up its demand in XDA soon. Give it a month or two. Another speculation is: this device is almost perfection. What can you do to make it perfect, considering all humans have different views and ideas of perfection? Only making the device "better" is attaining a higher form of perfection or nearing that goal. Therefore, those particular areas in modding can take a while to implement!
I too kinda have the same question..

Well,I too place my bets to the fact that it's early and all.And boy did I like what you said!It is perfect indeed!
It's just that we can get many things more with custom roms. Not only performance-wise,but many functions restricted by HTC.Anyway,I for one would overclock the hell out of it just to see it kick some Sammy Ass!
Shame I'm all talk for now.I have installed the 1.72 OTA(thank god I S-Off'ed my radio before I did) and now I can't root wihtout downgrading and thus deleting all my apps and data. And boy I can't stand the whole process of reinstalling everything from scratch just to have nothing from my data. No,I'll wait some time in case they manage to root the 1.72 OTA.And god I hope they will!

Most probably you're right,in fact all of you must be right now.Pardon my impatience, but I've used the Hero and the Desire on their "time of glory",when they were, like, what everybody wanted and many people developed for them(I know it's not exactly like that but never mind ).Anyway,it must be just too early...Well,time will tell! And I think that time, being a nasty bastard, won't be saying anything about the DHD until the first rumors and leaks about HTC's Gingerbread update start coming out.
Who needs quantity when you can have quality?
We have Cyanogenmod.
I think you've been unlucky? to come to us just after the gingerbread release and the fallow period prior to the Gingerbread based roms

What do you guys think?

Am I the only one excited about this?
maybe you are right and other phones (may) have more development going on.
I do feel that, the dev. that is going on is of very high quality with good working roms being released, tuned & tweaked kernels being released and so on.
I believe that the source code for 1.72 has not been released yet, preventing OC kernels for this.
Root for 1.72 is available through custom roms, including the 1.72 update (like the LeeDrOid rom I am using).
For me the number of roms is ok....I'd be flashing all the time otherwise
i think there is no time for development.. they all enjoy this phone xD like me..
and waiting for 2.3 from htc is more senseful to continue to cook some roms

Time to let go????

I have had my slide for a very long time now. I feel like development is coming to a crawl. CM7 will never have flash integration even though we keep getting upgraded versions of android. The CM7 forum is floaded with issues the last time I peeked. Gotta love those guys for giving us hope and their time. The Alpharev 2 looks super promising kinda wish chiefreloadz and other dev's would take a peek at it to give us life. I am at a point where getting a new phone is inevitable. Wish I could setup a poll via my slide to see how many people feel the same way. How many of you feel the same or disagree with me.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I feel the same way too. The slide really is a powerful device. I'm really upset it died so quickly.
Yeaaa and I'm especially dissapointed w/ the lack of custom kernels. I see so many devices w/ a wide variety of custom kernels (new and old phones), but this one only has 2 (dumfuq and miguel). I root other peoples phones and do overclocking and such, and I c all these kernels to choose from, while this device only has 2 kernels, even lower end devices have more kernels than this..
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk
The slow of progress in the Slide has driven me to new levels in the android world. I have made many sad attempts at creating my own Roms from source...as well as several successful attempts at modifying a ROM to fit my needs...as well as creating batch files to do most of the the work for me when it comes to nightlies, but nothing original. I am sad to to see this phone in the state it is since this is the second phone I've had of the android family. (I've hacked many others for the purpose of profit) I still use and maintain several G1s...which re-enforces my dismay over the staleness of this device. My next buy is a G2x (LG Optimus 2x). I could wait for the 3D line in the next year but my boredom has eclipsed my interest 10 fold. I plan on passing this phone on to my wife when she gets home from active duty in South Korea. So all is not lost. I know this doesn't even belong in this sub-topic of the forum but I thought it worth sharing my opinion on.
Well in my attempt of waiting for several things to happen I just went online and pre-ordered my WIFI Motorola Xoom. I am very excited hoping this will not have me thinking about my slide that often awaiting the next best thing. I also have a Nokia Maemo phone which the firmware will be updated to Meego by the end of April so its a matter of waiting I guess. Well hopefully this thread will bring things back to life if not then I would like to say goodbye to my slide by the end of the year and get myself a new phone with more power yada yada. lol. Anways...
can someone send me miguel's kernel?
or tell me where I can find it?
i can't get my hands on it...
As for the HTC Slide. I just upgraded from my Motorola Cliq a few weeks ago.
It's definitely a big hardware boost, but the dev support is certainly less.

Actually they removed that thread a long time ago,the only way to get it is to get it from someone who has it.
As for the slide I still have mine and it's running strong. It's a nice little phone and I don't think support for it will fade entirely for a while, there's just not much else that needs to be done to improve it thanks to cyanogen.

I actually posted a comment similar to this thread in the Gingersense thread. But yes I feel as if upgrading handsets will be the only way to get that "new phone" feeling I had got when first flashing cm6 and cm7 .
Edit: also this phone has yet to reach a year in age.(june or July)
And as far as flashplayer, its not the roms that don't support it but the UI. Sense UI was flash lite compatible but only armv7 processors are full flash capable.

Im sure most know, but maybe not the original poster, that this is not the place for this. Yes, you are talking about devs and roms and what-not, but this has nothing to add to the development community.
Yes, the slide does lack devs unfortunately. It is very sad that many devs did not take an interest in this device early on and those that did lost interest. I personally dont get it since i love this device. But the last thing to do is to complain about all that and just leave it at that. One of you said you tried to tinker with roms. Great! Thats what we need. We need people to get off their asses and take initiative. Lack of devs led me to attempt the port gingersense. I do not call myself a dev since i know 0 code and simply just know a few tricks, but at least i try. I would like to see more people start tinkering. If you love your slide, keep it alive. If you think you dont have the time, thats on you. I personally have a full time carreer which has crazy hours and a nearly full term pregnant wife (which means i have to do nearly everything around the house).
If you read this all, thx, i hope this sticks with someone.

I agree with most of what's been said. There really isn't much else we can do with the slide. With everything that's available to us, we have it, and that's about it. Since no one likes the mid-range of the slide and they all want the high-end awesomeness of the newer phones, the slide has few people to share their roms and themes.
I've had my slide since the very start of the slide era, and it is great with CM7 it does everything you want from a daily phone. I feel like I want something more tho, everything seems outdated with all of the new software and apps out there, we can't use them because of the slides hardware. Sad that's it's only been a year since it came out and it's outdated..tho I suppose launching the Galaxy S right after the slide launch just made it seem outdated weeks after.
As soon as I'm available for an upgrade in April I will be switching to a new phone; which I think most of us, who just want something more, are doing.
I got my slide on June 4th 2010, the day it was available for customers. I have loved my slide since. I learned soooo much about the Android OS and its capabilities since owning my Slide. I absolutely love it and want to hang onto it for as long as possible. It does everything I need it to do and it does it fast. Doesn't Cyanogens wife have a slide? I would think he would continue devving for it until his wife switches phones. Just a thought
It is endlessly amusing to me that someone would rather buy a phone out right simply because development has stopped....
You know the point was for YOU to get involved... right?
Listen I agree this is probably not the place for this but its a great place to voice my opinion to dev's which there is a huge shortage for this phone (this is my sole opinion). I have learned a ton from my slide. My first android phone was a maemo phone with a rigged android version on it. That made me want to get the slide because of android. I apologize if I offended people but just voicing my opinion on a topic that has been an ongoing discussion for many of us slide users.

My Nexus One will be arriving tomorrow!

Firstly I'll just say hi to everyone (this is my first ever post on XDA)
And yea, almost 2 years after the Nexus One was originally released, I am just about to own one.
I've had a HTC Legend since May 2010 (I was unaware of the Nexus One at that time, because of this buying the Legend has always been a mistake IMO), and I'm tired of it, plus it has lots of software issues, and I've never really thought or attempted to root it.
And so, with my Legend's performance getting worse day by day, I thought I'd get myself a present for Christmas. I considered the Galaxy Nexus, but as I was buying the phone outright, I just couldn't justify paying £510 (+ shipping) for it, and ended up buying a new N1 from Amazon UK for £275 (that price includes shipping).
Since waiting for the phone to be delivered, I have been obsessing over vidoes of it, and forums. I have actually looked at around 100threads on this forum (how sad?!) over the last 48 hours. But, in the course of doing so I have become smitten with this community and the help it offers to those who ask for it.
So I look forward to joining this well established community, and finally owning a Nexus One!
Greetings Dorset,
Enjoy your Nexus One
Yours Sincerely,
Surrey.
P.S Good choice of phone, but look after that power button! (Trackball wake is a must).
Yeah the Power Button issue definitely concerns me, but I'll probably root after a few months, just so I can be sure that the rest of the hardware is okay.
In terms on Custom ROMs, everyone seems to have CM7 on their N1. Is this generally considered to be one of the best ROMs, or is there another reason for its popularity?
Oh, and Hai Surrey
Also make sure to make use of changing the color of trackball notifications. I don't one an N1 anymore [ I went to an HD2 since], but I loved the notification light on the trackball more than any other phones notification LED.
I'll definitely be making use of Trackball notifications for sure.

Basically, this phone is too underpowered for properly running Sense builds, and the ones that were ported have always been with problems, the only relatively stable one being Froyo Sense 1 build ported from Desire by eViL D:.
This leaves it with stock, CM7 and MIUI.
Personally, for this phone I prefer MIUI - IMHO it's far more useful than CM7, containing many nice Sense bits while being small and fast (smooth).

I beg to differ.
HyperSense is perfectly stable, as is Revolution (though he continues to add features and change things up so issues could arise in new builds). I use HyperSense as a daily with absolutely no issues.
As for MIUI, I'd agree that its a great choice also...though i ALWAYS install LauncherPro because i love the features MIUI packs but absolutely derad the iPhone look.
Just my .02.
Welcome to XDA man!
phone is not underpowered main disadvantage is it lacks internal memory when talking about sense roms.Despite of this many people have successfully ported gb sense to n1 without graphical glitches ( thanks to kernel developer fogot name ) other bugs.go ahead and try;u will definately love them

I happened to have N1 and MT4G at the same time (now the N1 is gone), and I can compare their performance first hand.
N1 is seriously underpowered, graphics-wise and storage-speed-wise, to run Sense.
Internal memory disadvantage can be overcome by various SD-EXT utilization techniques.
And Sense doesn't have trackball wake.
dbasabe did great work, but it doesn't turn N1 into a capable Sense device.

But, in the course of doing so I have become smitten with this community and the help it offers to those who ask for it.
So I look forward to joining this well established community, and finally owning a Nexus One!

Congratulations!
Not many people would like to buy a cellphone which was released one year ago since more and more new devices come out in a real fast way.
But believe me, you won't regret for this and hope you can enjoy it, if you have any problems in using your cellphone, you are welcomed to this forum!
I agree on the post above. I just decided to buy a Nexus one despite of all the high-powered android devices nowadays. I guess I just simply love the look and feel of this phone.
Anyway, welcome to the forum! A lot of good and helpful folks are here. Cheers!

Awesome! Glad I'm not the only one buying this phone after so long.
So far I am loving it. And considering the price of new phones, I really don't think you'd be getting much more over the N1 for what you get with new phones.
I will use this phone for at least 1 year.
I have the nexus since it's release to canada by google, no power button issue at all, cyanogen is one of the best rom for a lot of device, on the nexus it manage memory well so it's a good choice.
As far as this phone is concerned, it may not be dual core, but it's fast and the only missing feature compared to newer phone are 4G and near field communication, unless you need those you should be happy with the nexus one despite is age!
I personally doesn't see any justification to upgrade yet
besides the touchscreen failures .. its a great phone despite its age

I'm in exactly the same position as you! (and what's more, I'm also from Dorset ) Except my Nexus One came today! It's beautiful! I got mine for about £109 from ebay and I'm also hoping to root and install CM7, as that's what I had running on my old Motorola Milestone (which died and was the reason I bought this) Good luck with this device!
One of the reasons why CM7 is so popular, is because it is pretty much the only truly custom build based on AOSP out there. There are a lot of AOSP builds that are very basic and don't deviate much from stock, and then there are a much larger amount of builds that are based off the CyanogenMod code base. MIUI is one of those.
But MIUI does make a ton of changes to the CM base, just as CM makes a ton of changes to the AOSP base. It does make MIUI stand out of the pack of CM-derived ROMs out there. While it did start with the CM codebase, they have done an excellent job of distinguishing themselves and giving a completely different user experience than someone running CM.
There are definitely a lot of different builds out there for our beloved N1's, but the two that tend to push the envelope the most and add the most new features are CM and MIUI. Try both out and see how you like them.
And I would recommend rooting much earlier. I had my phone for 3 months before I rooted it, and after I rooted and put CM6 on there (this was well before Gingerbread was released), I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. It runs sooo much better than stock ever did, plus there are a ton of new features.

Negative.

MIUI is based on Android 2.3.7 and CyanogenMod 7.1 sources

^completely agree with this guy here. I purchased my N1 (US though, not Canada ) at release. I've had not a single issue with power button or anything for that matter. Out of the "common" N1 issues, the only one I encountered was small dust or dirt particles under the screen. That's kind of my fault because I work outside and I keep my phone in my pocket where stuff does get in my pocket on occasions. I plan on eventually researching how to take the screen off and clean that stuff out.
As for everything else he said, spot on. Phone functions plenty fast enough and internet moves quick enough for my taste (and I use my internet A LOT including teethering to my PC as my main source of internet use). Though I would love to get a Galaxy Nexus, I don't think I can justify to myself (or my wife for that matter! haha) the need to spend $700 on a new phone.

^this guy is right as well. I use to work for U-Haul and I had my N1 for maybe 2 months, didn't know anything about rooting and such as it was my first serious smart phone (I came from an LG Vu) when some younger guy came in with an N1 (only one I've ever seen in person by the way besides mine, to this day) and we started talking about it and he asked me if I had force updated my phone and such. He told me about XDA, I joined up, and here I am today. I force updated with the update.zip that was on here, learned about rooting, and within a week after that I had my phone rooted and never looked back. Did a lot of CM nightly testing and such. I've used CM, MIUI, Sense...you name it...from developers new and old (still miss Evil's work!) and every kernel you can think of.
I'd highly suggest rooting ASAP and taking full advantage of this amazing phone

Htc Aria

its bad that the htc aria doesnt get dhat much support nomore. im just saying
sent from my still kicking ass aria
I have to disagree the aria never had ton of roms but the ones that we did get were solid and we still have a couple of great devs that have given us a cm 9 that is currently my daily driver. Hell we even had a taste of miui v4 So I think we are still getting descent support for a device that was never really a blockbuster seller.

not just the roms just any type of help

I have always gotten great support and have learned a great deal about the Aria, Android, and smartphones in general just from this sub-forum. Perhaps I can help you with something?
Aria support
I've found plenty of support for this little phone. We just can't expect a lot from such a slow processor. With a larger (16 gb) sd card and the right apps, it's easy to move things around to get the most from this phone.
I haven't tried the new CM9 on the Aria, but for my money, CM7.2 rocks on the Aria! I'm not sure the hardware benefits greatly from ICS, but again, I haven't tried it....yet.
its pretty qood and smooth, im just waiting on the camera to qet fixed

I think it did fairly well, you have to remember this was the second Android device for ATT and that was two years ago. Times have changed. I definitely applaud the devs that are still here and working on it actively.
I think the phone had excellent support. This was by far one of the nicest communities on XDA-Developers. As mentioned above, although we didn't have a billion ROMs like other phones, the ones we did get were rock solid. Quite honestly, there is no reason you need 100+ different roms on the phone. You either go the CM* route or Sense route.. Big shout out to genepool's liberated 2.2.2 ROM... I think that's the most polished sense ROM out of the bunch. His ROM is how HTC intended the device to run.
What did you need help with? There are lots of people here ready to help, myself included. I don't even have the phone anymore and I still read these forums from time to time.
Edit: I see you're having trouble with the camera. What's wrong with it?
The Aria is a wonderful little phone, and it is a shame HTC abandoned it. However, the community here at XDA has been more than generous to us, and to this day, continues to support the Aria. I owe all the developers a beer or two for their hard work!
