So I ran titanium last night to do some backups, however since then all my text messages have vanished.
Technically Titanium should only back them up, not delete them.
Anyone got any ideas as to where they went?
I've already posted about this...no idea/solution yet, but ur not the only one with the problem:

I know there are other Android devices where this happens, but I haven't heard of it yet on an Epic.
Basically, I've kept all my SMS messages for the last couple years. This morning I sent a text, no problem, still had all my messages. I received a reply driving to work and when I checked about 10 minutes later all my messages (including all threads) were gone except for the reply!
I do not have any autodelete enabled. I use Handcent. Handcent did dump a 0kb stack file on my SDcard root folder at the time it happened.
I already checked /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony only to find my mmssms.db is shrunken from 1.6MB to 35kb. There is also a mmssms.db.bak and mmssms.db.mark which are 0kb and not typically in there.
Any ideas on where my missing DB file could be? I feel it is erased, but do not know of any recovery method. I already searched the SD card using Recuva with no DB files. Where else can I look? Any way to mount the internal storage to attempt a recovery?
Thanks

Unfortunately I can't give a suggestion as to what happened but I can make a suggestion to keep it from happening in the future. Get the app called SMS Backup. This app backs you sms messages to your gmail account (with a separate label so it doesn't clutter your inbox). If this happens to you again in the future then at least you will have the data backed up.

@goddimus: Thanks for the suggestion about SMS Backup to Gmail. I did have that installed at one point (2009) but was concerned about battery life so decided to uninstall it. I do have an old backup from 3 months ago on my computer.
@orbiting234: I keep them for the same reason I keep all my emails. You never know when you need to refer to it, plus once in a while it's fun to look at to remember the events of your life.
Any way to extract a bit-accurate image of the data partition to run through a recovery program in Windows?
Yes, just went thru similar issue. Ill update this post when back home, but search this forum for 'extract nandroid' .. ill also post the db where sms are located.
Sent from the future.

I don't have a recent Nandroid backup though. What do you mean exactly?
Thanks
Hey guys...
Got a weird one here... I was using my phone earlier, and had all my sms messages in there. I sent a text about 1:30pm, and all were still there then. I received a phone call at a little after. After the call, put the phone down, and didn't look at it for a couple of hours. About 3.30pm, I went to send a message. In the messages, it was all empty. A bit confused, I restarted phone. Upon restart, still empty. So, sent a text, and then I'm the only message in there?!
So, what gives. How come this all deleted?!
A bit fed up, since the last backup I have dates back about 2 weeks ago... I guess there's no way to get them back. But, how come they would just delete like that?

Other people reported this issue on the Z here and here
It seems no solution or explanation was found for the moment.
So the best is to backup regularly your SMS until a fix is possibly released someday.
Thanks for that missparker... At least it's not just me going crazy...
Now, I'm wondering whether it might be something to do with the htcsense.com website and the syncing?!
I used to be able to get the messages showing on htcsense when I first signed up for it. But then, I had to factory reset the phone. When connecting up to my sense account, I Had all sorts or problems. So, I deleted my sense account, signed up again. After this, they had disabled the messaging etc. But, when I went in to htcsense yesterday, it looked a bit funny (i.e. the locations was apparantly disabled, which I had after I first had problems with it). So my guessing is htc sense deleting all the messages as it synced?!
Also, I got a message when restarting phone saying something like background searching de-activated... Couldn't find this on google?!
Have now set sms backup & restore to do a daily backup... Had that before, but when I ran the latest update, it messed up, so had to run full ruu, and forgot to setup the schedule for backup and restore! More fool me
Not sure that it's got anything to do with htcsense.com.
When it happened on my DZ, I got an FC of the SMS app then when I restarted it all my messages were gone.
Maybe there's some sort of reinitialization that it does if it detects corruption in the messages?
Does anyone know where and in what format the messages are stored?
R.
Hi Guy's
Been a while since ive been on here, but i've had my HTC Desire Z on 2.2 for a while now, well since i first got it, and had no issues what so ever, but walking home today from work, i press the home button to show all the screens, to go onto my messages widget, its the default HTC one that fils the screen, and it showed i had one message. However the screen/widget refreshed itself and started to load up the messages again, but went completely blank, opened up the messages app, and nothing in there, no drafts either.
So restarted the phone and no luck either. I have found one/two other threads on here with the same issue, but no-one seems to have come across a fix then, but that was a while ago, so has anyone seen this issue, been able to bring back their messages since?
Also to note, i havent modded my android in any way, nor rooted, nor use any backup software just not had time to look into it all, although i really want to.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Dean
i had the same problem and lost my messages twice,
this seems to be an android problem
only thing i could do is install sms backup restore app and backup my messages daily.
also did you update to 1.82 cause this seems to have solved the problem for me but i am keeping my fingers crossed.
Hey i was having issues with texting today and couldn't pinpoint if it was tmobile or the fact I have over 20k in messages. On the phone with them all day and messages wouldn't send/ receive. Couple ppl said they sent me messages and never received.. Some test ones eventually came through.
Anyways, I had restored messages from a previous phone to this and now I went to do a backup like I normally would with Sms backup & restore and never had a issue. I look into the file saved and noticed that many of the messages aren't saved. I used the built in backup with Samsung cloud and restored on another galaxy phone..
Seems like since I got the phone not many messages saved. Would I have to format the messaging app to remove all messages and call it a loss at this point and start from scratch?
Sorry for the long message. Thank you in advance

As the title suggests, the most amazing thing happened to me!
A few hours ago, I noticed I could not send SMS. I had sent a couple some hours ago but they never arrived at their destination.
So I tested by sending an SMS to myself which for some reason was never actually sent (I noticed I wasn't charged for it), thus never arrived.
So I thought I'd make an innocent reboot and clean cache data just to be fresh and perhaps the problem would be solved.
To my demise, when I entered the stock SMS application again I noticed that ALL sms messages were gone..
My last titanium backup was from December 2017, quite some time ago...
I've set up schedules for automatic backup but for some reason, they never trigger...
I've checked the sms db folder in data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases, only to confirm there's an empty db there.
I've also tried an undeleter app and a windows utility to restore, but to no avail..
I'm on OxygenOS 4.5.15 Nougat with Magisk and Xposed installed
The irony is I was planning to upgrade to Oreo these days, thus taking new backups in the process..
Any suggestions?
Would there be any way to salvage my messages back??
Anything else I could try?
I would really appreciate any help at all!!
It's really hard to take a hit like this out of nowhere.. :crying:
