Email notification sound hic-up - Focus General

When I get an email notification, there is a hic up in the audible alert. When I play it on demo, it plays smoothly, however, when I receive an email, there is an audible stumble in the tone.
FYI I am using Alert number 6.
If I did not know any better I would have thought that there was not enough memory to handle the simultaneous processes, ie, the toast, the tone, the push notification etc. But there should be plenty. My phone is stock with no additional memory. Originally I had an expansion card, but I have removed it and hard reset the phone. I have not seen any other performance type stumbles yet.

I have also had this problem, but rest assured it is Windows Phone that is having issues waking up to alert you. Its not the phone.

I hear the same thing. Not all the time, but it does happen.

I get that... I usually just power cycle my phone and it fixes it. Maybe a memory leak or something?

Interestingly I have been loving how seldom I have to power cycle my Focus. It is certainly not a WM every day power cycle phone. In fact I have only power cycled when messing with memory cards or going from micro USB Zune function to modem tethering function.

frequent lockups

Hi
Im noticing that the xdaII tends to lockup more often than the xda1.
Often if i try and switch it on with the power key, nothing happens. Need to soft reboot it.
Other times, the menus and actions go very slow. Other times, the contacts wont display, now matter how often the contact button is pressed.
any thoughts?
I have noticed a few locks usually when trying to end a phone call....just doesn't respond and needs a soft-reset.
It also sometimes takes AGES to power on or get to the bluetooth screen...
Better than XDA1 though!
R
Same here, and when someone tries to call me, it seems to me that the Phone does not react on an incoming call too. I've just tried it when i found my Qtek 2020 locked again. I can't put it on, but both blue and yellow leds are flashing. I called myself again, but it does not respond. This is definetely NOT good ! I had some complaints already that i couldn't be reached, I did not realise it's the device !! It works fine after a reset but it happend a few times already, without notice. This is something that really bothers me. Any ideas?
too many active processes
the device, as configured, has too many running processes.
Microsoft had the wisdom to limit the PPC to 32 processes.
After that, it removes some of them... which can crash the system.
You should remove some of the \window\startup applications,
most likely the sim manager, backpack, and the xflashman.exe
apps which auto-backup the contacts/appointments.
this was discussed on ppcw.net ... and has certainly cleared most of my problems.
I still see the phone not receieving a call while GPRS is active,
e.g. when it checks for my email while someone tries to call.
Anyone else can confirm this?
1. connect to GPRS
1. start IE for a large page via GRPS
2. call yourself from a land line while IE is loading

Haunted Device?

Hello,
Up until recently my nice new XDA Exec has been great. However, since yesterday it seems to have grown a mind of it's own which has me worried.
It's fine, and then all of a sudden, it goes very strange. The backlight starts to get really bright, then really dim randomly by itself. Then, applications start going odd. For example, the wisbar skinned startbars background disappears, and bits and peices in applications start to stop showing up. This is then followed by the device forgetting what is trusted and what is not. Trying to launch any program or utility results in a '<x> is untrusted, would you like to run' box coming up, even if it's Word, file manager or the most basic settings panels. Pressing yes allows the application to run, but it's very odd.
The first time this happened, I got a message saying there was insufficient power to support 'SD' (sd card?) even though it was on external power and there was no SD card in the device???
A few minutes after, the device freezes, leaving nothing but a soft reset as an option. After doing so, it all goes back to normal and runs fine. I'm yet to find any cause to this and would appreciate any ideas, it seems quite odd to me. It happens when both on battery and external power, so I can rule that out.
Any ideas? This is a relatively new device, pretty clean ROM with a few applications and the TrueVGA modification - however, it ran fine with all of these for a week or so, so I'm at a loss.
Thanks for your time, I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts
Just do a hard reset, all the problems will probably go away.
The solution is obvious. You need to call someone. But who you gonna call?

I've got the same issue. Reading other posts I'm coming to the conclusion it might be the memory card. I've pulled mine and will run without it for a while to see what happens. Would love though if someone else can shed any light on this. I'm about to go through a full memory erase and start from scratch until I find the offending program or utility doing this. I'm running Voice Command 1.5 and I'll push the button to activate it and I can tell it's trying because the "Notification" prompt appears, but it can't hear me apparently either. Very frustrating all the way around.
me too
same problem here. i'm also running msvc 1.5. I seem to notice that this happens when I have been listening to wmp on the wired earbuds and kill it when I'm done. I've also seen some posts about memory card issues causing problems like this, but that seems strange to me.
pretty often I pull my 2gb card and put it in a card reader to run scandisk and defrag. this time I got 100 meg of dead files in found.000. was causing issues with/was caused by ie cache and wmp10 files on storage card.
you know 2 days ago, i had this problem... and it was because i lowered the volume and didnt know. i know im slow. but anyway, i had this problem not hearing sound with my headset wired via usb. soft reset resolved. only happened once. hope it doesnt happen again.

How many random failures do you get a day?

I think I have a fairly unmodded phone...
Its still not unlocked, no rom changes, etc.
I just have programs like: PocketWeather, iLauncher and TomTom with a few simple additions like the new program that auto disconnects data after a preset time.
Well it seems very random, but when I fire off things like TOMTOM it just hangs, but not every time.
Not many. Generally speaking, when I'm having issues, it's my fault. But I do have issues with my OK button periodically disappearing, and sometimes non-responsiveness of some apps.
But, it's very rare. I usually do a soft reset every couple of days when something even remotely starts to act up.
Same with mine. I use the latest i-mate WWE ROM and find it stable.

Do you use Magic Button?
Nope. That's what's weird about it. I'll push the OK button on the front, but the app will still be up, and the OK button will disappear on the screen. I can usually get back to the Today screen by pushing the end call button though.
mine is now very stable. There is another thread that lists the "best" things to do to stop the periodic freezing. My 2c worth is on that thread also
I use Mortsaver to lock and close the device when i'm not using it. I think this results in a very stable device. It will wake up for SMS alerts and calls but for the rest of the time it's asleep - except when you are actively using it of course.
I also use SPB Backup at 05:00 in the morning which performs a soft reset after the backup. This keeps it clean too.
Defragging the Storage card and keeping as many apps as you can off the storage card also helps.
btw I use Magic Button
I only asked about Magic Button since I've noticed that the close button disappears sometimes in "Program Manager". It comes back again with a simple tap on the window background.
See thats the odd thing.... someone else told me to try and keep my unit's memory as clear as possible to avoid possible lockups.
Is the general consensus that its the other way around?
I have the vast majority of my applications saved on my storage card, granted I have tons of space on it.
I do experience frequent annoyances when using mine.
- screen alignment sometimes acting up (will send it back, but I'm waiting for the firmware update to be released, so they can do it together)
- mediaplayer occasionally loses the storage card (solved by deleting MSMETADATA on the card)
- occasional refusal to use an existing gprs/umts (have to disconnect and reconnect)
- vpn shutting down too fast when using it with wifi (after 30s)
- activesync sometimes doesn't recognize the device, forcing me to rename it and perform a whole new sync
- occasional difficulty in connecting to the correct wifi network (e.g. when there are 4 available, it pops up a couple of times that it has a network, but the one I always connect to is the last one to be found)
...
I have been using it for about a month now (was already sent back twice for keyboard and screen issues), and had to perform 3 hard resets as the behaviour got worse. I really like the device, but I wish there were less issues.

After seeing the specs of the Hermes, I wanted it immediately.
Last week I finally bit the bullet, sold my Wizard (Cingular 8125) and got the Hermes.
For the most part, they are the same device, with the addition of 3G and a supposedly faster processor in the Hermes.
The Wizard was about as stable as a Windows Mobile device could be, at least in my opinion. I really didn't do much outrageous with it. I had a couple of games, TomTom 6, a dialer skin, and Good Mobile Messaging installed. I'd have to reset it maybe once a week or so, sometimes less than that because TomTom would lose connection to the GPS and nothing would get it back save for a reboot.
I took my Cingular 8525 (Hermes) out of the box, and I was really impressed by the device. The keyboard is far superior even though it's only a little different. I like the styling of the Hermes better, as well as the nice gunmetal finish. Download speeds are incredible (almost 900K in my house), and setting up Good Mobile Messaging OTA only took about 5 minutes vs. 20 on the Wizard.
The only problem is the instability. Sometimes I click on the "Start" button and it will make the click noise and light up, but it doesn't drop the menu down, requiring a reset. Sometimes the phone will shut off the display and trying to turn the power back on does nothing and requires a reset. Sometimes the phone will show remnants of windows that were recently closed and that will require either opening up other programs to clear them, or a reset. Then there's the just plain ol' freeze. Not to mention that plugging in my car charger barely ever activates the charging circuit on the phone
I've had this phone for about 6 days now and I have to reboot it AT LEAST twice a day, sometimes three or four. AT LEAST. This is wholly unacceptable. If we weren't on the cusp of a firmware upgrade that is rumored to rectify most of the problems above, I'd be selling this and maybe getting a Treo 750 or a BlackJack.
I've had so many little issues like this with my Tytn, using both standard and latest roms, that I've simply decided to sell it. Its just not a great phone or a pda, although it has all the features you could ever dream of, it just never seems like its fast enough and the software just doesn't seem all that polished.
2-3 on a good day. It usully is in the range of 5-6 for different reasons. Keyboard doesn't respond, stuck on caps, no volume, random freezes, screen won't turn on. Gets annoying after a while.

Regarding the stuck on caps problem: if you select caps using the onscreen keyboard, then the physical keyboard is also put into caps. It is however not possible to turn this caps-lock off in using the physical keyboard. The solution is to open the onscreen keyboard, and turn it off there.

8125 versus Hermes
I agree with you that the 8125 Wizard was more stable than the Hermes. I had one as well, and it would go weeks without resets or freezes.
You said:
" The only problem is the instability. Sometimes I click on the "Start" button and it will make the click noise and light up, but it doesn't drop the menu down, requiring a reset."
I believe this is due to the external storage becoming lost. Since WM5 doesn't expect storage to ever go away, it just freezes waiting on the storage to come back. In the case of the start menu, I think it's waiting so it can get the icons of recently used programs. Just a theory.
To fight this problem, I've loaded weather programs and the like into main memory so that external storage is only accessed when I'm playing with the phone. That's made my hermes a lot more reliable, down to a failure or freeze every few days. Not as good as the Wizard, but tolerable.
I'm having a TON of problems...
I have my Cingular 8525 HTC
ROM Version: 1.34.502.1
ROM date: 09/21/06
Radio Version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.53.7018.01H
I am having horrible problems with it randomly locking up, and I have to soft-reset. This usually happens when I have it on the charger overnight, and someone text messages me while it's on the charger... and of course when I soft-reset I lose all the messages! What's even worse is when it boots back up it'll vibrate, and beep for a long time like it's getting messages and I have to just ignore it and put it on silent... but there are no messages! Is there a way to fix this? What do I do?! I'm starting to get very frustrated with the phone - the only thing I use repeatedly on here is the MS ActiveSync over the air...
Do you think this could also be something to do with the variant?
I have Vario II from T-mobile, with all their stuff still on it, and I have installed/uninstalled goodness knows how much stuff, and don't really have this problem at all (touches wood). I can go for 3 or 4 days without soft reset, and then that is usually after a backup, when you have to.
I have all today screen and any software which is in startup, installed to main memory.
Also, could password screen have something to do with this? If on charge, and password protected, maybe they interfere with each other on receipt of text message. You could try removing password for overnight.
Have you tried leaving messaging running minimised overnight?
Also, have you moved any databases to storage card?

This is an interesting idea. I will leave the messaging minimized overnight tonight. The password screen is there as a matter of policy - through my work - since the company owns the device and they push policy to it which requires a password PIN to be entered after 15min of inactivity... I'll try that?
Anyone else having that weird sound problem with it repeatedly "pretending to get messages" after a soft reboot?

Are you sure that the sounds are messages rather than notifications?
It could be that your notifications queue is gummed up with lots of stuff. Suggest you get Memmaid or similar, download the trial and run the notifications queue duplicates remover. Then look at any of the entries marked Calendar and check to see if any of these are in the past. If they are remove them. LEAVE ALONE any notifications that are not Calendar with a description of one of your appointments or reminders.
Worth a try.
I also had some troubles. It freezes anywhere between 2 and 20 times per day. I just did a hard reset few days ago and tried to determine if any of my programs installed causes it.
It runs quiet well with nothing installed. Most freezes i get after installing SBSH WeatherMonitor.
About the sudden loss of external memory, i cannot complain. I install everything system related into the main memory. But weather and flexmail are on the card. I even take the card out having the phone running.
Not probs there.
Generally my Blue Angel is a far better phone, although bulky like my grand mother and not useful in Japan.
Thanks for the replies. After reading through this thread it seems I am not the only one with problems. Nearly every 8525 problem I've had can be solved, they just keep coming back. Like 8525 not recognizing Storage Card music. The worst for me ( happens a lot ) is that when I put the phone on the charger, then the screen shuts off to save power, but when I take the charger out the screen cannot be turned back on and needs a soft reset.

HD2 Died..... or did it?

I'm in between surgery so thought I'd post a quick question where the answer is puzzling me.
Basically, I'm in wonder if this has happened to any other soul?
Picked up my HD2 when I came out of Theatre and it simply would not switch on.
Thinking it may be the battery that had run down I connected it to a power source to charge and noticed the Orange charge indicator did not light up.
Next I took out the battery and reinserted, then pushed the power button......
Still nothing.
Thinking was it a problematic battery (although it still should have switched on when connected to a power source) I exchanged the battery for the spare I take around with me.
Still nothing.
Finally, I reinserted the first battery and once again pressed the power button.
This time it fired up and loaded without any issue.
I checked the battery level ~ that indicated 56% still remaining.
So I am in puzzlement as to what may have caused it's temporary death.
Has any other had a similar experience?
Edit 01 ~ 24 Feb 2010
It would seem that to some (myself included) there is a fix that does indeed cure the problem and that is by using the software application MemMaid.
Others have tried SKTools but MemMaid seems to operate much better at terminating the freezes.
Unfortunately MemMaid is not free and seeing as HTC will not budge from this being a 'users personal settings' that is causing the freeze our only course of action at the moment is by using MemMaid.
However, please do note..... Not everyone has benefited from using MemMaid; why that is the case could be down to some individuality ~ a different setting, installed software, routine notification, etc. etc.
In other words first try the free trial version of MemMaid and if it seems to cure the the problem then do consider investing in it.... besides all this it is a great piece of software.
You can get hold of MemMaid here.
Word of Warning.....
Ensure you set up MemMaid correctly. I spent ages with member wacky banana throwing many personal messages between the two of us like fervid lovers until finally wacky came up with a setting we could use.
Below is the settings to apply to MemMaid:-
In your programs section you should see 2 icons, one called Memmaid Quick Clean and the other is Memmaid.
Click on the Memmaid icon and a window opens.
At the top left corner it should say Quick Cleaner but this is not relevant for now.
Put a tick in the the following options (the list is scrollable):
- compact ram
- windows temp files
- temp files
- ie cache files
- ie history files
- opera cache
- dead shortcuts
- duplicate notifications
- dangling notifications
- invalid notifications
- rebuild notification queue
- recycle bin
- google maps cache
Press the CLEAN button and wait for the tool to do its job then press the close button.
Next, on the bottom right of your screen, click the Tools option. From the drop-down menu choose CLEAN SCHEDULE.
Tick the following items:
- on soft reset
- daily (here you need to scroll to the right to select the icon with the 3 dots in it to set your schedule)
- show report (optional)
- show progress (optional)
Click DONE on the bottom left corner on your screen and job's a good 'un!
Edit 02 ~ 24 Feb 2010
Member jonbaker76 came up with a few extra tips to help alleviate the problem:-
1). Install MemMaid and follow settings provided by Beards & WB
[*]2). Disable the alarm (use G-Alarm maybe)
[*]3). Turn off Facebook updates
[*]4). Turn off Weather updates
[*]5). Turn off Internet Time Sync
[*]6). Wait a while before carrying out a soft reset, your Phone may just wake up
Edit 03 ~ 25 Feb 2010
Guys,
We are starting to find a pattern building up here relating the problem with Sense.
Some users don't have problems with ROM 1.48 but others Do/Did (I used to) so we can't say v1.48 was okay.
However, it's the later ROM's which seem to have the greater of the problem which could relate to an issue with Sense.
i.e. Although evident in v1.48 it was not as strong but with either Cooked ROM's or updated ROM's the problem has been magnified.
A few Guys have now tried using their HD2 without Sense and report a stable platform.
What I am saying here is if you have the problem and you can afford not to use Sense then try running your Phone without it for a trial and see how it performs...... With enough info we can pass this on to HTC.
I had a situation where I switched the phone back on (from standby/power saving mode) only to find it was dead. To get it running again I had to perform a soft reset and, like you, I found that I had plenty of battery remaining. This happened only once in three weeks of usage and I'm not sure what caused it.
James
I had a similar issue a few days ago.
I picked the phone up and pressed the power button, but nothing happened. I did the same as you and assumed that it was flat (despite me being a charging maniac!) I plugged it in and got no charging light, so I popped out the battery and put it back in. It turned on first time then.
I wasn't really concered as it's only happened once in over 3 weeks, and I'd only recently upgraded the ROM so I was ignoring any little foibles like this.
Maybe it's a little more common than I thought?
this has happened to me twice since upgrading to the new recent rom.

Beards,
Did you have any diary appointments or alarms set on the device today that you did not immediately cancel on notification or multiple alarms set/going off? If you did then this is probably a notification queue issue locking up the phone, forcing a reboot.
This symptom was very common with the TYTN when it first came out and drove me absolutely bananas!
Long shot but let me know.
WB
No... nothing was left to tie the Phone up.
I remember checking everything before I went down to Theatre earlier this morning.
In a way I'm pleased it's not an isolated case and that others have experienced something similar (sorry Guys, I don't wish it on you ~ just a little relieved I'm not the only one).
I know HTC monitor the 'Camera Problem' topic (they've told me this directly). Maybe they have some super-duper exra-terrestial monitoring machine that can achieve the Dynamics of masspoint collections..
Yep, I too have had this issue.
Was using phone normally, left it on stand by by pressing the power key. Wanted to make a call, it did not turn on. Opened back cover to do soft reset, did not turn on, started sweating..., swore at the phone and took battery out and then replaced battery and pressed power button and what do you know, booted up like nothing happened.
Am using original shipped UK ROM. Have not upgraded.

I had the same problem - it happened only 2 times for a week, but it was nasty enough (and in combination with the camera problem) to make me finally send my phone back for a refund.
Basically the symptoms were similar - I would leave the phone somewhere for more than a couple of hours only to find it somehow switched off or something. The buttons light up when clicked, but the screen remains black - only battery removal helps and after that runs like normal...
I have quite a number of calendar notifications etc. - this might be a good clue!
I have the feeling that this thread might grow as big as the camera thread. Perhaps HTC fix that with a software update as well ...
A friend of mine had this problem with his HD2 on Sunday morning. He was surfing the web with it when it froze up. When he took the battery out/in again it wouldn't turn on.
He called HTC and they came to pick up his handset on monday. I guess he'll have to wait to get it back repaired Maybe he should have tried taking it out a few more times first.

I had something similar this morning, I have been using the alarm for the last 2 weeks with no problems. this morning the screen lit up, i saw the notification on the top but there was no noise. as a veteran of WM i dismissed it as "typical". however, the screen then went blank, the buttons would light up but nothing happened. I reset the phone to no avail, button still lit up but no screen - mild panic. removed and refitted the battery and all has been well since.
won't be too chuffed if it happens again....

Beards,
Notwithstanding that this may be some kind of new software or hardware problem, I just wonder about the notification queue.
I would try using a copy of SKTools to clear the notification queue ( I think you can do other tweaks as well but it's been a while since I used it) and see what happens.
Did you have any missed calls you did not answer today (another possible culprit, linked into auto screen lock = disaster).
I am simply putting ideas out for you to try to narrow the problem down. Don't know if any of this will work.
WB
PS: Just had another thought; have you installed an application onto your SD card that is on-screen? Used to have this issue with a weather application, sat on screen but installed to the SD card.
If the phone went into sleep mode and the application polled the weather servers then it would die a horrible death. De-installing and reinstalling to phone memory solved the problem.
Again its a long shot but you never know.

Ive had that same problem twice last night within th space of 1/2 hour and the today i ran fine up until about 5pm today, where it froze, I updated the rom on sunday from O2 1.43 hope this is not gonna be a problem, anyone know where to get O2 1.43 rom just in case I have to return

Even though my profession is based on absolute accuracy in detail, when it comes to finding out why the HD2 died I'll try any long-shot.
There were no programs loaded though and I know nothing was paged to make the Phone send any notifications.
I'll have a good check at possible programs/dll's later though.
Thanks.
I've had the same a few times. Probably the reason was overloaded main memory. I removed some mp3 files, but the situation wasn't change.
htc touch pro2 vs hd2... just got the answer!
a day ago... i was unsure about the upgrade. i had posted tis msg in xda but was advised by a senior member tat it was worth the upgrade n i culd find all my answers to the query here. here was my msg...
"hi all. with all the hypes surrounding htc hd2... n my htc touch pro2 fast losing its crown of being the best winmo device in the market... shuld i upgrade to the hd2? n watz wif the glass screen? wuldn't it crack easily? it's glass! appreciate everyone's take on this. the only selling point tat is tempting me away frm my pro2 is abt the speed... 1ghz vs my miserable 528mhz... sad. everyone's talking abt its blazing speed. is it tat obvious?!
then again there's tat camera issue... the infamous pinkish spot, which htc support claims it's related to the 1ghz dragon fella... software related... n restricted to only a selected few?! so it's like going2 the lottery n c who gets the infected piece is it?! bottom line is... my pro2 seems like a honda civic... n the hd2 is purportedly a nissan skyline, but wif so many question marks hanging over its head, shuld i still go for the upgrade? thnx!"
guess wat, after reading most of the threads here... i think i'll stick with the htc touch pro2. the hd2 has way too many issues... even worse than the camera thingy tat i knew abt... but the number of issues tat r highlighted here abt the hd2... is enuf2 make me say no to hd2.
This thread here reminds me to some issues with WinMo 6.5/Manila 2.5 ROMs for the Xperia X1: Over there in the forum, you can find quite some postings describing the "standby of death" problem.
Just very close to some of the other issues we now face with the "real" Leo, too. In fact, there are more "similarities" like the stand-by issue, and nobody was really able to clearly reproduce the problem as there seems to be no pattern. The same problems are not existing in WinMo 6.1/Manila 2.1 ROMs for the Xperia - but some in a WinMo 6.1/Manila 2.5 version, when I follow the thread correctly.
I do strongly believe that there are, underneath the hood of Leo´s operating system, quite some nasty bugs in WinMo as well as Manila. I cannot imagine another explanation why 2 totally different devices with very different hardware (parts) would show the almost exact same issues.
Of course, porting the Leo ROM to something like Xperia may bring some issues, but most apparently, most bugs are coming from MS and HTC, not the talented chefs here. (One more reason to look forward to custom ROMs for the Leo. No good sign for HTC though, frankly spoken...)
mine die this morning too ... alarm didnt go off
but press and hold the power button wake the phone up and alarm start ringing. Then I power it off, and all the other buttons does not turn on the phone other than press and hold power button = soft reset ... weird
Camera patch is out today
waiting for new ROM release
Same thing happened to me this afternoon. The phone wouldn't start up when I pressed the power button so I tried holding the power button down to force a soft reset. At one point all the buttons lit up but nothing more happened. Eventually I pulled the battery out, stuck it back in and then the phone started.
