I'm told that it should be impossible to get 3g connectivity on a G1 with an ATT sim, something about the antenna, but lately thats exactly what i've been getting.
Specifically, near powell st (in the bart station almost all the time), near montgomery st bart station, and down around west portal, i'm getting 3g speeds.
Anyone in SF with a g1 and an ATT sim want to try and replicate what i'm seeing?
Weird. The only explanation is you're getting some 2100Mhz (Band I) UMTS coverage (the iPhone 3G can also connect on 2100Mhz, explaining why AT&T would have it). I had no idea AT&T had any 2100Mhz UMTS bandwidth allocation though.

Do you have roaming enabled?
I would hazard a guess that you're probably roaming onto T-Mobiles 3G network, but that rather assumes it covers the area in question. It's either that, or AT&T are trialing something there.

Dave

That is what I thought too, initially. However, what benefit would AT&T have in signing 3G roaming agreements with T-Mobile, considering AT&T sells no 1700Mhz equipment?
No idea, but it is possible.
I suggest one possible approach would be to use CellFinder to identify which cellular towers are providing this 3G signal on AT&T, and then see if you can find out what services are provided from this tower and by which carriers.
I've just noticed though that CellFinder doesn't work anymore on Haykuros 5.0.1G!

Jan 29 In New York City my X1a on Tmobile showes an EDGE signal than at 7pm it switched to a Big H signal with full bars where ever I went. Then at midnight it switched back to Edge. Was Tmobile running a test for their new network and can x1a get 3g speeds on this network?
no it's most likely that you roamed on to AT&Ts network...
I turned off my phone then went to connection settings. I made sure I wasnt roaming it was tmobile and when i roam to ATT it usually displays a 3G signal
Interesting... Did you notice faster download speeds?
I'm also on T-mo in the Northeast, so I'll keep my eye on it.
you won't always know when you are roaming. The carriers are doing a lot to hide the fact that you are not using their network...
anyway... if you are using TMO, when even have 3G enabled??? kinda waste of battery power....!
I'm going travel in Asia (taiwan), they have 2.5ghz wimax service there but I wonder if I could activate the phone to use wimax?
I know regular voice/cdma evdo could be activated on the carrier there but I don't know about the wimax radio?
Anyone has experience on using Evo overseas?
Anyone live or work around downtown Columbus, Ohio?
My friends and coworkers get horrible sprint coverage in downtown on 3g and 4g.
I know sprints building penetration is bad but 3g is faster than 4g. Verizon let and at&t 3g destroys our coverage and speeds on many different sprint phones.
Anyone else experience this in Columbus, Ohio in the downtown area. It's supposed to be the best 3g/4g coverage.
Swyped from my HTC Evo with Eternal Prophecy 6.0 ROM.
Since the Nexus 4 is unlocked and will work on at&t or T-Mobile is it possible to force the phone to roam on T-Mobile with an att Sim? The at&t coverage is spotty where I live and I would love to test the T-Mobile hspa+ and signal strength before possibly switching.

you wouldn't have access to Tmobile's HSPA+ speed if you roam. I know I don't get att's HSPA+ network when I roam from Tmobile to At&T. If you want to try it out, you have to go to a Tmobile store and ask for the phone.
