Hi everyone,
I'm going to be flashing the myHero or Cyanognen ROM on my HTC Magic (32A) soon and I was wondering, before I do that, how would I backup the default ringtones/alerts/alarms on the original ROM that came on my phone? I'd like to keep all my sound notifications to be the same whenever I flash the new ROM, just because I've grown used to them now and like them.
your answer Sashimi
it saves or can save tons of settings.
if you need more help with this send me a PM
Create a folder structure like this in your SD card:
\media\audio\ringtones
Copy the ringtones in there, and they will automatically be availble when you flash another rom.
You can do the same thing for \media\audio\notifications and \media\audio\alarms.
You can get the stock ones from \system\media\audio\ringtones. I would use Astro to do the file copy (from Android Market)
Thanks guys! Appreciate the help a lot.
So with the advent of boot loaders such as Excellers which allow you to choose different builds of Android, what exactly do you need to copy off the SDCard to backup your build?
I dont mean the data, sms, mail, etc, but the actual entire build?
Is it enough to simply copy the Android folder and the files inside it including data.img or is there a need to copy the other folders and files that android creates in the root of your SD (LOST.DIR, rosie_scroll, etc)?
Android builds automatically create those folders and files if they do not exist for them, but will it cause issues if they already exist, since we can now switch between builds on the same card?
Any ideas??
Oh, and I did search, didnt find anything conclusive though.
As far as I know. Making a copy of the Android folder is enough. Be carefull though, the DCIM folder must be backup aswell if you have made any pictures/video's. The rest of the folders .secure etc are just temp folders.
For backing up you can use the free program Titanium backup aswell (found on market), use the search, someone wrote a nice guide for it some time ago. Can be used very easy to transfer your installed apps from one build to another. Transfering system settings isn't a good idea, especially not if you switching different builds. Only when updating your current build it should be ok (not recommended), but sometimes copying your data.img to your new build is enough to get your applications in the new build.

Basically I just want to try out different builds concurrently, switching between them with Exceller.
Data isn much of an issue since most of mine is in the cloud somewhere but its a pain installing some new build only to find the one you just had and spent time configuring, was a hell of a lot better.
Well i'm not entirely sure about where the settings are stored. But my guess is, just backup the android folder and you will be fine (think most is stored in the data.img). Delete all the other folders and switch to your new build. If you don't like it, switching back should be a breeze.
Why don't you just try it once. Change some settings, delete all the folders except for the android folder and boot again, see if the changes you made are still there.

mainly because there arent enough hours in the day, so many roms, so little time.............
Well, since i'm at work and bored, I tried it for you.
Only imporant folder is the Android folder and our DCIM for your pictures. All the other directories do nothing but temp stuff on my rEVOlution 2.2. Deleted them all and android still booted just fine with all settings and homescreens I had applied.
Hope this awnsers your question now.
Excellent, thank you very much, I will be trying to clear some time later to try an alternate build on the same card. I will post how it goes.
Seems to work, as long as you edit the startup text to include the foldername of your build Exceller lets you switch between builds:
set cmdline "rel_path=YourbuildfolderHere"
I am currently using the super fast and reliable desire_hd2 build on my HD2. I have changed the icons (framework-res.apk) on the build with no trouble but I have come across this thread. Here are some cool looking skins which I would love to apply to my device but having trouble doing so.
I am asking for help on how to get these skins onto my phone as I think it would be awesome to swap and change these skins at will without changing the build.
Thanks in advanced.

The skins that come as a .apk file are easy to install. What if they come in a zip or rar file like this one. Now once this zip is extracted it has system/app folders with a load of .apk files for browser. calendar, friendstream etc and a META-INF folder. I have tried placing these folders into the root folder of the Android folder (desire_hd2 or simular, depending on which build you are using) and restarting. The first two times I tried, with different themes my phone would not boot past the htc splash screen and melody. I thought it might be because I were putting the META-INF folder in there as well. I have just tried to leave out the META-INF and my phone booted up fine. Then came the problems. Everytime I tried to start an application like browser, camera, mail etc, then a force close would come up and the application would refuse to start. I am currently reinstalling the desire_hd2 build for the third time today and still wondering what I am doing wrong.
Any help please

hi,
as far as I know, we can't use those native android files on android ports as they often require recovery mode to install (hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
sorry ur stuck with the apk's for now.
I do know you can put the framework-res.apk in root-system-framework in the android folder on your sd card, reboot to alter the wifi, battery and other icons at the top of the screen, just experimenting now to see if you can import the the icons for calendar, mail, message, internet friendscreen etc. Seems there might be a problem moving the com.htc.resources.apk to framework folder as you would framework-res.apk. Will try and report my findings on here.
good luck.
would be interested to see if you get it sorted
I deleted a few of my stock files with titanium backup pro. When I try to restore them, TBP just keeps saying restoring app+data & the status icon keeps spinning.
Is there a place I can download the stock apps I removed?
Thanks
You could probably find a stock ROM that matches your version in the development forum that you could get the apps from. It does not matter if you get a rooted version of the ROM. You just want to get the odexed stock ROM that you can get the apx and odex files to replace the ones that you have removed.
You are not supposed to remove stock system files, you are supposed to freeze them. You will probably have to reflash the rom to get those files back.
You can remove the system files if you are sure that you will never need them again. Freezing them is a way of preventing them from running without actually removing them... useful for testing to see if removing the program causes any unforeseen problems.
If you have removed a file and now have changed your mind about not wanting it (i.e. Now that it is football season you find that you really do want Sprint NFL back) it is also possible to get it back without reflashing. You can extract the apk and odex (if any) out of the stock ROM and place them back in system\app. I have done this with Root Explorer. Make sure that you set the permissions back (to 644) after copying the files.

Which stock are you running? 4.53, 4.24, 4.22, 3.70?
And which apps?
Stright to questions..
If I want to remove some stock apps in custom ROM, can I just extract the ROM file and go to \system\app then remove the apps that I don't need then compress back to zip file?
Or any other file need to edit? Please advise.
Other question:
I would like to remove all Google apps (Gmail, Gtalk, map, etc) except for Android market, what file should I delete?
Thanks..
easiest way i know is either using titanium backup pro or bloatware freezer apps from the market
