I am in Boston enjoying 4g service and getting 8mb down on the street (wow). However, I seem to be limited to about 1.4mb down when I run speedtest on my laptop through wireless tether. Does anyone know the limitations of wireless tether? Am I limited on the speed by WT, the phone, or what?
Speedtest app shows 5-8mb consistently, speedtest website on my laptop shows 1.2-1.4 consistently.
I never trust that site. I have a network monitor widget on my desktop and, when in 4G, I utilize it fully. Usually around 7-9 Mbps down. So my suggestion is to use a monitoring solution that looks at the actual in/out of the network interface.

I've had the exact same problem, and the developer has worked on it a bit, but the page has seemed to die out.

Hi there, I got a Magic (32A) with FroyoRedux, SPL 1.33.0010 and Radio 3.22.20.17. Everything works perfect, except for one thing: the WiFi speed. At july, I was visiting my parents in other city, I also updated my ROM while I was there. At my parents' house, with WiFi connected to a 8mbps internet connection, I got full speed (tested using speedtest.net app). About 3 or 4 weeks ago, when I got home, also via speedtest.net app, I got a fair speed (3mbps) via WiFi. I have 15mbps at home, but I though it was OK, since its fast enough for most applications I use. But, since then, my WiFi speed is limited to a extremely slow rate, always slower than my 3G speed. I have 600kbps at 3G, and I get, in the best results, 500kbps via WiFi (most of the times, it gets between 100 and 200kbps), even without any other device connected to my router. I tried using static IP, no success (actually, I was unable to connect while using static IP, even with all the settings done correctly). Using an app called WiFi analyzer, I can see that no network next to my house is using the same channel as my router does, so channel interference is also not the problem. I know a setting in HTC WinMo devices which let the user to choose between better wifi performance or better battery life, but I was unable to find such settings in Android.
So, I'd like to know if it is a known issue, or if someone out there has the same problems as me. I've seen many Droid and Hero owners having similar issues, but nobody with a Magic.
And sorry for any typos I may have commited, my english is not that good, I'm brazilian
Far better than the apps on the market. It gives real speed of your web connection. I was getting 1.2 -1.5 down on the speed test app when http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ was giving me 4.1ish.
The speedtest.net app has been extremely unreliable for me. When I use it I get a download speed of 800k. If i use a browser based test even from speedtest.net I get 3mbps. The app also lowers my wifi speeds from 5.2mbps to about 3-4. Ping times are also affected.
use www.testmy.net for accurate tests. Make sure you select the mobile tests

Just ran this on my 3GS and I get 3.3mbps on wifi which is impossible considering speedtest.net shows a 30mbps down connection
EDIT : Speak Easy also reports around 30mbps, tried running TestMy on my wired computer and it runs around 14mbps, It seems crippled.

You ran the Speedtest.net on your computer. It will be much slower on the 3GS.
Also, when using the test suite, make sure you select the mobile version, www.testmy.net/mobile
Also select the AUTO option. For comparison, my Verizon Fios connection get 28MB/s download and 27MB/s upload over my laptop using wireless-N 5GHz. Testmy.net gives me the same readings (this is with a XBOX 360 in the background playing COD: Black Ops (hardwired), and my wife upstairs on her laptop playing Cafe' World on the same network band). With nothing else running, my connection is usually spot on 35/35. On my Evo, I get 7.7Mbps download speed. Wireless N but at the 2.4GHz radio. I think when I had my 3GS it was about the same on the Wireless G.
Using the Speedtest app on my phone, I get about 13 downl and 7 up...

Yeah on Speedtest.net app on my iphone on Verizon FiOS I get around 18mbps down with the stock wireless G router. I tried TestMy and it shows a 3.3mbps connection on my iPhone. Both Speedtest and SpeakEasy show a 30mbps down on the wired desktop while TestMy shows only 14down its weird.
All: I just got my WiFi Xoom, and I have it tethered to my (rooted) HTC Thunderbolt using WiFi Tether.
It connects fine, but seems slow when using Speedtest.net - I only get about 2Mbps Down, and less than 1Mbps up. When I tether other devices to the Thunderbolt (4G LTE) I seem to get much better performance which seems more in line with the performance it is capable of.
So, I was curious to know if there was some sort of a limitation or issue with the WiFi speeds when tethering on the Xoom? I can't say I see speed issues with the Xoom when connected to an access point at home on a cable modem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Rob
I dont know but the fist time I did a speed test with my TB and my laptop was very fast over 20BM, I did reset my phone and rooted one more time, now Im having the same problem :-( if someone know please help how to fix it!
Samthing here, when using the "internet connection" mode I get 20mbps but when using PDA net or Easy Tether on my TB it's like 1.5mpbs! Anyone got any ideas?
just did 2 quick tests with wifi tether and got about 6 down.
Tethering looks to be working on the droid side, but no connection is found on any computer, sometimes with limited connectivity icon.
Anyway i can increase the tethering data output...different channel? certain kernal or rom suggestions would be helpful
If you're connecting to your computer you can use easytether
Experimentation is the best way. If you have the wifi analyser app, scan for a channel that's not being used around you. Ive noticed that on gingerbread (when I can get it to tether) it doesn't run quite as fast, so if you have a gingerbread ROM look at that. It is three g, so signal strength is important, and if you use a lot of data (like above 1.5 gb) verizon starts killing your connection speed. Just play around with it, and don't really expect anything above 1 mbps, unless you have exceptionally good signal in a unpopulated area.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Im am on the rooted .588 GB and have the TBH patch installed and use the Hotspot app to tether. At first I could not get it to connect half the time and the other half when it did connect seemed to suffer DNS related issues or drop connection.
I ended up adding my MAC address in the native app for authorized connections and have had ZERO issues ever since.
US996 unlocked using OEM site. Phone is rooted. I am running the stock Oct. 1 2016 US99610d Build number deODEXd firmware. I am using Verizon wireless and Verizon FiOS which I recently upgraded from 75/75 to gigabit. At 75/75 my wifi speeds on my V20 were consistently 85/90 D/U with 9 or 10 ms ping using the OOKLA speed test. With my gigabit FiOS I have seen V20 speeds as high as 435/305 but no more. My FiOS desktop PC speed test using the Verizon gigabit speed test consistently shows 949/934 for router and 924/952 for device (PC). My V20 with the OOKLA test however will usually show something like 5 ms ping and 85/110. If I delete the OOKLA app, go into recovery and wipe Dalvic/ART Cache and Cache, then reboot and download the OOKLA speed test and run it I get the Very high 400/300 speeds UNTIL I get out of the app, then rerun it and get the old 85/110 speeds. The WiFi connection on the phone always shows 866 Mbps link speed. All OOKLA tests are from the same OOKLA site. I can tell if the phone on WiFi is in fast mode or slow mode by download speeds in general. I am frustrated trying to figure out what is preventing consistent high WiFi speed (all quoted speeds are from a distance of about 3 feet from the router. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.
