Hi there, I got a Magic (32A) with FroyoRedux, SPL 1.33.0010 and Radio 3.22.20.17. Everything works perfect, except for one thing: the WiFi speed. At july, I was visiting my parents in other city, I also updated my ROM while I was there. At my parents' house, with WiFi connected to a 8mbps internet connection, I got full speed (tested using speedtest.net app). About 3 or 4 weeks ago, when I got home, also via speedtest.net app, I got a fair speed (3mbps) via WiFi. I have 15mbps at home, but I though it was OK, since its fast enough for most applications I use. But, since then, my WiFi speed is limited to a extremely slow rate, always slower than my 3G speed. I have 600kbps at 3G, and I get, in the best results, 500kbps via WiFi (most of the times, it gets between 100 and 200kbps), even without any other device connected to my router. I tried using static IP, no success (actually, I was unable to connect while using static IP, even with all the settings done correctly). Using an app called WiFi analyzer, I can see that no network next to my house is using the same channel as my router does, so channel interference is also not the problem. I know a setting in HTC WinMo devices which let the user to choose between better wifi performance or better battery life, but I was unable to find such settings in Android.
So, I'd like to know if it is a known issue, or if someone out there has the same problems as me. I've seen many Droid and Hero owners having similar issues, but nobody with a Magic.
And sorry for any typos I may have commited, my english is not that good, I'm brazilian

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.
I've no such issues!
Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.
Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone
Next time put [rant] on the title
My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.
The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?
I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?
I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.
Guys,
Sometimes even cordless phones, microwaves, etc will interfere with the connection.
Cheers.
As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.
But it seems nearly nobody cares.
My old thread about his, no answers:

Stron,
Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.
Cheers.
What if it is capable of connecting at 54 Mbit, but can actually do only 11 Mbit? Nice trick. I hope it is just a bad idea.
I've noticed that my wi-fi speeds are hell of a lot slower than 3G speeds. Anyone experiencing similar issue?
wi-fi: DL- 56kbps UL- 78kbps ping- 1218
3G: DL- 3106kbps UL- 1228kbps ping- 131
Device: Xperia Arc
With my previous phone, which was Xperia X1 I had much better results on wi-fi than on 3G. Also because X1 runs on WM6.1 there are settings to improve wifi performance, Android doesn't have anything of the kind as far as I know.
My modem is b/g, Arc has b/g/n. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I wonder what causes this and what could be done to solve the issue.
30 minutes usage of 3G network makes battery very hot, almost kill the phone. Need hardware reset again.
However wifi seems perfect doing well for me.
ARC sometime do run into battery problem, need to give it restart/reset.
No problems with hot battery here on 3G or anything else but the wi-fi speeds are disgraceful.
ive noticed the wifi signal isn't very strong on my arc, even when i'm sat next to router with no other devices near me. My X8 had superb wifi connection speeds, but my arc sometimes won't even detect wifi signals that my x8 had no problem connecting to.
I copied a video to my Arc over wifi @ about 900k/s. It was in the same room as my router. No issues here, except maybe a little less good reception than my laptop, which is normal.
My router is in my living room, I use wifi on my arc all the time from my bedroom and while "sitting on my throne" in the bathroom. No issues.
Maybe you have a loose wi-fi antenna in the phone? (not sure if that's even possible)
I can use the phone in the house too but the speeds are low. If it was the possibly loose antenna I wouldn't be able to fix it without voiding my warranty.
Speaking of warranty... Why doesn't SE say anything about this issue? Would they like me to return the phone to them?
no problems here, speed and signal strength are better than on my HD2
19000kbps download
14000kbps upload
6ms ping
but old 54g router is limiting speed

sry, read too fast through topic, thought was more like a general question.
b/g/n device on b/g router is no problem. you should test with different security encryption and on other networks so you can see if it is a problem with your device or router.
Hi, just wondering because I do not have my Arc yet.
Does it happen if the phone is on a table (ie. no "death-gripping
' it, who knows if that s an issue)?
Do you have a cover? on my DHD, a simple gel or whatever case would butcher the GPS performances, for example. Have to take it out of it if I want it to work properly.
Well, I did some more testing today and this thing has me puzzled. First off in the morning I got blazing speeds (in excess of 6500kbps down) on my wifi but in consequent tests the speed was slow (about 50kbps down) again. I went to my neighbours house to try it on his wifi and it ran fast there (6700kbps down). So obviously the Arc wifi can run fast too.
I'm thinking it might have something to do with router configuration as suggested here earlier. My neighbour has b/g/n router and uses WEP encryption. I have b/g router and use WPA2-PSK. I might try to reconfigure and see if it helps.
@kipue - I have no cover on the phone and it runs slow whether the phone is in my hand or on the table.
I wonder what SE might have to say about this issue.

WEP is unsafe, stay with WPA2 if possible. my results were also done on WPA2 secured network.

don't think Arc has death grip problems. tested a lot, signal strength weakens only when i cover the top chrome line (where power button is) with my finger
OK, I think I solved it, for now at least. I changed wifi encryption to WEP and in about 10 speed tests the download speeds ranged from 5000kbps to 9000kbps.
I'm not happy about switching from WPA2 to WEP either but what good is secure wifi if I can't use it? It's not like I'm keeping any secrets here and living in a little village I doubt there are many identity thieves prowling this dead end street.
Try wpa/wpa2 personal/enterprise with tkip/aes, maybe you find a combination witch works fine

Tethering looks to be working on the droid side, but no connection is found on any computer, sometimes with limited connectivity icon.
Anyway i can increase the tethering data output...different channel? certain kernal or rom suggestions would be helpful
If you're connecting to your computer you can use easytether
Experimentation is the best way. If you have the wifi analyser app, scan for a channel that's not being used around you. Ive noticed that on gingerbread (when I can get it to tether) it doesn't run quite as fast, so if you have a gingerbread ROM look at that. It is three g, so signal strength is important, and if you use a lot of data (like above 1.5 gb) verizon starts killing your connection speed. Just play around with it, and don't really expect anything above 1 mbps, unless you have exceptionally good signal in a unpopulated area.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Im am on the rooted .588 GB and have the TBH patch installed and use the Hotspot app to tether. At first I could not get it to connect half the time and the other half when it did connect seemed to suffer DNS related issues or drop connection.
I ended up adding my MAC address in the native app for authorized connections and have had ZERO issues ever since.
Hello all,
I've had my Nexus 10 since Christmas and it's never given me any problems. Within the last 3 or 4 days, however, I noticed my videos weren't loading like normal, so I've been running speedtests and it is completely inconsistent. My phone and computer will consistently pull 20+ Mbps, but the N10 is crazy. Sometimes it's 3Mbps, sometimes it's 10Mbps, sometimes it's 16Mbps. Every time I check, it's different. I've used multiple programs and websites to read the speeds, and they're all reporting the same. I can stand in another room, or right next to the router, same story. The wifi never fully drops, it just slows way down. I don't have a case on it. I've turned on and off the Wi-Fi optimization in settings. I've turned on and off location settings. Nothing helps! Please let me know if you have any ideas. I am hoping I won't have to return the darn thing, it seems crazy.
As per my internet, it's Comcast, Surfboard modem with a Linksys E1000 (Wireless-N, 2.4GHz) using WPA. Restarting that did not help. I am open to the idea of changing some settings on the router however, if that might be a solution. Also, signal strength on the N10 says "Excellent" and link speed says 130Mbps.
Thanks for your help!

I too have this problem so now Im going to attempt to root the device
Glad to hear someone else is having similar problems.
Possible good news: I changed my protection from WPA(mixed) to WPA2, and so far things seem to be much more consistent. This may just be a fluke, but it's looking much better so far.
If you have a router with 2.4GHz band only, try changing it to 2.4GHz under WiFi settings on the Nexus.
I had some disconnection problems due to that and somewhat inconsistent speeds, I've seen it fix a lot of peoples problems, I've yet to have a transfer problem so far with limiting WiFi to the speed of my router.
Other issues some see is using N wide or dual channel (40Mhz). As the N10 only supports 20 Mhz in 2.4GHz it seems to get confused.
Most other devices either support 40GHz or handle switching more gracefully.
In short force router to 20 Mhz/single channel, may report more consistent behaviour.
On 5Ghz it does not matter as the N10 supports 40Mhz/Dual channel.
Odd, I know.
My experience is that sometimes with wifi issues, wiping the cache (if custom recovery is available) would resolve the issues for some time, but it might be due to an beta ROM.
P.S> on 5GHz wifi I am able to hit 122Mb/s
it has WIFI, mine hardly works
After a few hours of testing, I am now consistently getting 20mbps + as I should be. My router is set to 20MHz only, but I think the main issue was the security settings. It just wasn't dealing with WPA(mixed) well.
i did the basic checking and didnt find any problems
i got galasxy s5 tmobile 4.4.2 android stock rom rooted
and it supposedly supports 5g wifi but when i use it the wifi just dies out after some time and becomes like dial up speeds.
facebook doesnt even load pictures or update
same thing happends with reglar wifi but after a longer period of time
im suspecting my router but dont know for sure i got a brand new modem router n600 c3700-100nas with 50mbps comcast connection
i already set it to free channel on both 2.4 and 5g wifi also checked all the settings on the router its all normal
ran the speed test on the phone but it keeps using wireless network to run it and gets 84.38mbps tops depending on the day
and when i switch to cellphone network its fast i got 3gb cap so i try to conserve
wifi at home sucks ass and at work i have an older router and its good there.
wifi analyzer shows signal strength between 50-65dbm most of the times
but wifi 5g signal strength is alwayss weaker for some reason
You are right, 5ghz band will always be weaker, the higher the band the shorter the range, so 2.4ghz(standard) will go mjch farther that 5ghz. If this is an issues with both the channels i would for sure check the router for issues, if its only happening on the 5ghz band i'd just stick to 2.4ghz unless you REALLY want to be on 5ghz.

is there any tools to test wifi that can tell me where the problem is?
ive been testing from my desktop and from cellphone best i can but my network skills are just slightly above noob.
i have some free tools on desktop for network troubleshooting but i havent used them yet(just downloaded)
on the phone i couldnt find many
im looking for some monitoring tools maybe ones that show graphs or something to show me whats goin on during the slow down times and what might be causing it.
if i remember correctly its not the wifi signal because that stays good all the time
