[Q] Rooting the legend..before and after - Legend General

Hello!
I am considering rooting my beloved Legend, however i have a few questions before i start.
I´ve read that i can´t apply my own custom recovery, so how do the recovery work then?
After i´ve rooted the phone and installed a new ROM, can i just run the official update from HTC when they release Froyo for us, and have their update on it?
And the last question, in MoDaCos guide to root, it says the HBOOT should be of version 0.43 or below, mine´s 0.43.0001 - is this the same as 0.43?
Regards, patrick

>I´ve read that i can´t apply my own custom recovery, so how do the recovery work then?
Don't know how recovery works on other phones, but the ROMmanager app works as expected.
>After i´ve rooted the phone and installed a new ROM, can i just run the official update from HTC when they release Froyo for us, and have their update on it?
don't know. Mine offered me an OTA right after rooting (which also required a downgrade), but I didn't take it since I wasn't sure if it would break anything.
Custom ROMs that just take the official OTA and add root should be out quite soon after the official release though.
>And the last question, in MoDaCos guide to root, it says the HBOOT should be of version 0.43 or below, mine´s 0.43.0001 - is this the same as 0.43?
Same hboot here, worked just fine. I think some other guide actually stated version 0.43.xxx or below, so it seems the 0001 doesn't matter.

Question about Nexus One SLCD and unlocking bootloader

Hi all,
i have an Nexus One SLCD and want to flash the US Stock Adroid rom so i can get all further updates directly from google OTA.
I don't need root and i don't care if unlocking my bootloader will void my warranty.
The problem is: all i can find are many FAQs about "rooting without unlocking the bootloader".
Since i'm not interested in any custom roms, can somebody please explain to me how i can flash the stock us rom on my german Nexus One SLCD?
Is there any faq for this available?
As i said my two important points are following:
- i want the us stock rom
- i want OTA updates
I would appreciate a short step-by-step description (i did this with my old Nexus One AMOLED but it seems like the older roms don't work with SLCD devices as the drivers are missing, so in don't know which rom to flash after i unlocked the bootloader).
thanks!
Look in Nexus One Wiki, "Unroot/Restore your Nexus", PASSIMG method.
Flash Korean FRF91 ROM.
AFAIK, there is no US ROM with SLCD support.

thanks! i checked the FAQ and have a question about this:
"Using PASSIMG.ZIP method (adapted from here):
1. Revert HBOOT to older version, if needed (required for pre-FRG33 stock builds and for flashing CyanogenMod ROMs).
* Use the following steps to flash PASSIMG.ZIP that differs from EPF30.
"
it says that i have to revert the HBOOT if i have pre-FRG33 stock build (which is the case for me).
but when opening the link the first post says:
"this is especially useful for people who wish to use the rooting method without unlocking the bootloader. If you already have an unlocked bootloader, there is no reason to follow this guide."
since i want to unlock my bootloader, do i need the above mentioned steps at all?
edit: just saw that you updated your reply. is there really no us rom supporting slcd? i was hoping this was the case as even developer phones should start being sold as SLCD versions...
If you have HBOOT 0.33, then you don't need to downgrade it - which leaves you with easy procedure. I've changed the Wiki to be more understandable.

sorry for the dumb question. But how can i check which HBOOT version i have and if i have HBOOT 0.33, does this mean i don't even have to unlock the bootloader (via fastboot) to be able to flash the US STock ROM?
Reboot to bootloader (fastboot), it'll show you the version at the top of the screen.
Unlocking the bootloader isn't required anyway. If all you want is to have a stock ROM - then keep the phone stock, since unlocking won't be of any use to you.
You can flash US stock ROM (FRF91 PASSIMG - link exists in Wiki), but if you happen to end up with a phone that goes black after "X" splash screen - don't say I didn't tell you

But wouldn't my Vodafone Firmware throw an error if i just try to flash a stock us rom? And i would rather try to directly flash the newest rom, because as you said i don't think that FRF91 supports lcd.
Edit:
sorry i just realized that i haven't even mentioned until now that i'm talking about an european vosdafone nexus one SLCD (FRF91)...
The newest FRG83 ROM doesn't exist yet in PASSIMG version that I'm aware of. If it would exist - or if it appears at some point - it'll be easily flashable over FRF91, no matter what build.
Anyway, looks like Korean ROM won't help you, since it doesn't seem to receive OTAs either (I guessed you have VF version). I'm not aware of any other "clean" FRF91 ROM that supports SLCD, and I've googled it for 1/2 hour. You could wait until FRG83 PASSIMG appears, I guess...
Thanks. I rooted my Nexus One now. Guess I have to wait until the passimg FRG83 emerges. But if I want to keep root I have to wait until the passimg is rooted correct? And how long does it usually take until a new stock build is provided as passimg with root?

Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I have found following link:
http://android.modaco.com/content/google-nexus-one-nexusone-modaco-com/318475/frg83-android-2-2-1/
There is a link to a rom:
http://android.clients.google.com/ packages/passion/signed-passion-FRG83-from-FRF91.c8847c98.zip
Can I use this to switch from frf91 Vodafone to stock us FRG 83 rom?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
can anyone answer my above question?
my aim is to have a stock us rom (root is no must - so no problem if i lose it during the process. currently i have a rooted vodafone FRF91 device.)
No you can't use that to upgrade the Voda ROM.
As it stands now you'd have to root the phone (using UniversalAndroot if you want to stay locked), and use fastboot or flash_image to "update" system.img and boot.img to the USA/Google orginal ones.

i have unlocked my bootloader now and rooted my device. is there any manual on how i can update system.img and boot.img with fastboot. And where can i find those files? Is there a risk to get a blank screen (SLCD)?

[Q] FRG83D update on a rooted N1

Hi all, I'm quite new to this forum and I hope I dont break any netiquette with my question.
Now I have a N1 I bought on ebay, used, rooted and perfectly functioning.
I don't remember how, but I was able to update it to FRG83D downloading the rom, renaming it, copying on my sdcard etc ...
Now ...
I can't update to FRG83D.
I understood that having a rooted N1 NO OTA UPDATE shall ever work for me, not the manual update is available.
I was able to skip the "no signature verification" error suing clockwork mod, but i can't install the patch anyway, the system alway replies "assert failed: apply_patch_ckeck (" stystem app accountandsyncsetting . apk" ... then a serie of letters and number follows.
I know nothing about this, I must confess, but my suspect is that the update fails because something doesn't match between the update and the ROM which is working on my N1 (which is by the way the original one build frg83d
baseband version
32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320 android-build apa26 #1
Any sugestion ?
I mean and idea about where I can download a FRG83D version suitable for my phone ?
If you just want stock with very little tweaks, may i suggest Geo's Rom. It's basically the latest stock rom w/ superuser, busybox, trackball alert etc. Runs amazing too =)
As for breaking any netiquette, you're suppose to post this in the questions forum not the general. Have fun with your phone.
worked!
Thanks Mokurex!
It worked.
It's unbelievable.
I spent three nights in search of an answer, and then you solved it in few seconds.
I'm new to Android, and I must confess that I'm quite disoriented.
There hare hundred of versions, produced by individuals, companies, etc ... The one I used, I mean the one you suggested me, seems to be the fruit of an individual's work in the US.
It's ok to me, sounds and works good.
But It's not the original one, I mean the one released by ... Google ? or ... what ?
It doesn't matter, but I just want to say that it would be easier for us all, newbies, to have some clear guidelines on this, an online guide for dummies, something or somebody who would explain us the difference between a odexed or deodexed versions, what are the pro and cons of rooting a N1, the fact that rooted phones loose the OTA update (which is very VERY painful for us newbies, etc ...).
I understand that we can rely of forums and on kind people like you, but having some clear cut guidelines would be very useful.
... and looking at the future ... I guess I'll have the same problems when I'll have to update to Gingerbread.
I's very frustrating to search the web for a suitable ROM for your phone ...

No, it's not the original. That one is deodexed, so any future OTA updates will not work (as Google's stock ROMs and updates and not de-odexed). You will have to wait until someone repacks the update, then apply it.

What are you trying to say? Phones running a rooted, but otherwise stock ROM will certainly received the OTA updates. Now if you use a non-stock ROM, you may or may not receive the OTA update. But whether you receive it or not, you will not be able to apply it as is, until someone repacks it (unless you are using the stock ROM, rooted or not).
I believe you have to use the stock recovery as well if you wanted to update via OTA.
If you want to get Gingerbread by way of OTA, then revert to stock rom and recovery. Everything you need is in the sticked thread in the development section.

No, you do not. You just need a newer version of Amon_RA (1.9+) or CWM.
Thank you for the correction.
Efrant, Mokurex,
perhaps it's my problem.
My original plan was to restore my phone is a status capable of receiving OTA updates. Considering that I'm not an IT expert it would be easier for me ho have such a phone.
Wandering on the web, I discovered that rooted phones are not eligible for OTA updates.
And most important of all, I'm not eligible to manually update is as well using the patches on the net (signature verification errors ... and many others seen above).
Mokurex helped me a lot (actually, solved my problem by now) suggesting that version of the ROM (I mean Geo's one) but it's the fruit of a work of an individual. I'm very grateful to him as well, but who knows about the future. Will Geo provide a similar version of Gingerbread as well ? Because without him I can't upgrade.
Efrant, got your remark.
I have CWM, latest version, I also bought the premium version (in oder to show to the programmer of it my appreciation) but in my case it just doesn't work.
With it, I can bypass the signature issue, but then I got stuck at assert failed: apply_patch_ckeck (" stystem app accountandsyncsetting . apk
Oh, by the way, I also tried to go back to ERE27 or something like that (unrooted version etc ...) but the mobile just doesn't work at all ...
I understood that the only way to unroot my phone (actually, any phone) and qualify for the OTA is via SDK.
... but I'm afraid it's just a bridge too far for my poor knowledge.
Geo has been quick to update his rom to the newest version. To upgrade to gingerbread, i'd assume that it would be like flashing any other custom rom, but there might be a bit more steps involved.
If you want completely stock, no root whatsoever, go here.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: rooting has no bearing on the phone's ability to receive and install OTA updates -- what matters is which ROM you have. I rooted my phone when I bought it, and it had Eclair on it. I have received EVERY OTA update without any problem.

If you want a stock ROM, you can go here: http://developer.htc.com and download a Nexus One image to your sdcard, rename it to PASSIMG.zip and boot the phone into bootloader (by holding the trackball and powering up the phone). It should automatically detect the file and allow you to flash it.
Files from the site are official. If you get them from anywhere else, you can't really know what's been modified.
Dear Efrant,
if you were a girl, and in Italy, I would probably kiss you.
Now I have a bright-clear picture of the situation.
During the next holiday, I'll try and flash a stock version of the OS and then try the OTA update.
By now, the version mokurex suggested me work brilliantly and after so many nights wasted in a desperate search of an answer my myself i'm going to have a break.
... but thanks a lot. thanks indeed !!!
Sorry to disturb you again Eftant.
The fact is that today decided eventually to follow your step, but encountered another unexpected problem.
downolaed the original HTC rom - done
renamed it passimg.zip - done
turned on the N1 pressing trackball - done
expected detection of PASSIMG.zip - done
opening passimg.zip - done
checking passimg.zip - done
and then .. nothing
once the N1 load the passimg.zip file (i notice it from a loading bar on the upper right conder of the phone) it just allow me to
1)run bootloader agan
2) lock sim
3) restore something ...
... and that !
No possibility to "flash" rom as you wrote.
Did I miss anything ?
I see from the web that a lot of people bring back the N1 to the stock image using SDK from PC (MAC in my case) but the steps are not so clear considering the fact that I'm not that comfortable with the shell and the Android SDK is not intuitive (... to me).
Thanks in any case for your attention!
Try wiping your device then download the FRF91 image from the same site, rename it to PASSIMG.zip and save it to the root of your sdcard. Put your sdcard back into your device, and boot into the bootloader (by holding down the trackball as you push the power button). Once it flashes, wait for the OTA to FRG83G. Some users have said that the later images don't work using, particularly if you have updated to the 0.35 version of the bootloader.

Downgrade to 2.1 from official 2.2 ota updat?

As the title says, is it possible?
I had read that creating a goldcard will allow me to install an older version of software than the one currently on it. So i can root and flash a 2.2 rom...
thanks.
-Nicky.
Not possible so far, as per my information.
darn...all i want is to oc my wildfire...

Hello, just wait or try to find the latest rom on the forum ...
You will not receive the OTA udate on a rooted handset. You will either have to unroot and wait for the 3 software release or download the stock 2.3 rom and install.
can i not just unroot some how and leave it on the stock unbranded to be able to recieve the ota update?

You should instal 1.32 ruu exe then do temp root through visionary. Open the radio s-off tool which you can find somewhere on the forum and you need to do stock cid which is HTC_001 and you'll receive update
Forgot to add that I have a three branded dhd but now it's unbranded
1.32 can find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357
radio s-off here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
and you'll receive update
legend!! cheers mate, its now found the update...
now just hope the install doesnt crash or anything
if you have original recovery and you didn't uninstall any system apps you'll be fine

how to open bootloader?

I bought motorola Atrix week ago and i want install custom rom but my android version is 2.2.2 and
system version 4.4.80.MB860.Partner.en.IL
baseband version N_0.95.00R
kernal version 2.6.32.9-00001-gfdaed51
build number OLYEM_U4_4.8.0
Thank you
Hey, I bought my Atrix some few days back and wanted to unlock (bootloader) it, install CWM and root it. And I did hello lot of searching for that, and found this page and used it to get everything done.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202883
So, I would recommend you the above link -- it's sufficient and has just one file for download with everything in it.
NOTE: I had Android 2.3.4 installed on my Atrix and the above guide applies to Android 2.3.4 running Atrix only. So take due notice of this.
ONE MORE THING: Read this page in full so that you gain knowledge of what you are doing. And I think once the bootloader is unlocked, you cannot re-lock it (anyway, I'm yet to find a link/page which would help me relock it).
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
That's it. Good luck. Enjoy!
There is no guide for my version?
cuz I afraid to get a hard brick with another version guide
yes I know what it is bootloader root and etc
I had htc legend before
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
I tried all those guides and no one helped me to open my bootloader
any suggestions?
