Hi Guys,
So I just picked up my DHD yesterday and I've just encountered a major (I think so) problem with it.
Everytime I hold the phone in my left hand (i'm a righty) my wifi cuts out.
After a bit more investigation I found I could replicate this problem consistently by with just one finger, touching the battery cover just below the + sign.
Do I have a faulty set with poor shielding or are all sets like that??
I've tried to make a (poor quality) video of my problem but I cant link to it here!
Apologies in advance if this issue has already been addressed!
Doesn't seem to do it with mine, is it worth checking the battery is secure?
Same problem, I think it's normal.
Have you still taken a look at the User Guide (at the bottom at page 13 on english user guide!)?
There is described that bluetooth and wifi-antenna are placed under the battery cover. So it's not wondering, that wifi signal-strength decreases if you put your hand on it!
I think it's not a special problem of the DHD!
There's also a youtube-video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2SB5rQTMyY&feature=related
This was a video I took of mine:
I dont even need to cover the entire batter door, just a finger is enough! And to make things worse, its in a nearly-impossible-to-avoid position.
Could it be that the battery door on my phone is not properly shielded?? I have yet to hear of a phone that lost WIFI reception just because u held it wrong
Anyone else getting this problem??

I'd never noticed it until now, but mine does the same. I don't find it a problem because I have a gel cover on mine to protect it, and this gives enough spacing between my hand and the phone for it not to cause any signal drop-off.

Just had to comment since this whole forum is getting out of control.
People complaining about "non-problems"
Speaker phone volume is too low - cant sit in my truck and listening to music
(Never had a phone were I could do this)
Screen angle is bad - Cant flip the phone upside down and read what's on the screen
(What!!! Is that really true!!)
Bad build quality - there is a 0.1 mm gap at the sim cover
(Way the hell are you looking at that side of the phone for?)
and so on....
I can tell you I don't have this problem.
Would never hold my phone in such retarded way!

Has anyone noticed that when u hold the phone when browsing internet etc, the signal level drops especially when holding phone near the bottom. many times my signal drops out. I know the antenna is in the bottom of the phone, but it was also in the touch hd and I never had this problem.
Anyone else have the same?
Interesting!
I hadn't noticed this, just tried it and your right!
Hold phone at top of device, 2 bars. Hold it at the bottom, 1 bar! That is sat in exactly same place in house.
Very interesting find mate.

I have noticed the signal drop when you hold it, i like browsing in landscape mode and sometimes i have to put it down to get signal back :-(
Could this be because of the metal battery casing? Bit worrying...
I put vodafone sim in and this happens. Put O2 Sim in and it's ok. Weird!! Gonna purchase a signal booster which is supposed to reduce static (or something) allowing better signal.. Off to ebay..
I have the same problem with my device and got calls dropped yesterday so i decided to report this to HTC. Here is the reply i received. Havent tried yet but you can give it a shot.
Regarding the low signals issue, please follow the steps below:
1-Go to: start>settings>menu>all settings>personal>phone>network>choose orange manually
2-enable the airplane mode: start>settings>wireless controls>airplane mode
3- Perform Soft Reset to the phone.
Soft Reset :
1. With your thumb or finger, open the back cover by lifting up from the left side of the cover.
2. The RESET button is located at the bottom left below the battery compartment and SIM card slot. Use a small object with an unsharp, pointed tip such as a toothpick to press the RESET button.
4-Disable the airplane mode, test the phone and see how it works.
5-Try another SIM CARD from another network
Thank you so much for using HTC products.
I got the same problem
reception is not good at all
I am using Nokia and samsung with the same sim signal level 3 or 4 bars
but with Leo only 1 or if you lucky get 2 bars!!
dissapointed

That DOES NOT MEAN IT SHOULD EXIST ! ! !
This was also happening on the At&t fuze (Raphael), the Omnia i900 and the iPhone 3g.
It is very common in phones where the antenna is at the buttom i think.
I have to say that mine is the complete opposite. I get a significantly weaker signal both 3g/gprs and wi-fi if I hold the phone at the top! How bizarre.

My girlfriend's Nokia 6650 consistently gets 1-2 bars better signal than my HD2 in my living room. In fact, my signal is so weak that I've been disconnected in the middle of a call twice now On T-Mobile (UK).
the radio on mine is the strongest i have ever had.
i get reception in places i never did before.
the is a restaurant i know where no one ever gets a signal... on any mobile or any network... i was sitting there browsing the net!

Agreed! My wife has a Nokia 5800 and always gets better signal strength than me(it was also the case on my G1) I think Nokia do better for signal strength than others.
Part of the "my wife gets a better signal than me" syndrome is related to the capacitance, and therefore conductive properties of each individual person.
Some people have very high natural levels, and others low levels.
The level of conductivity in a person effects their ability to act as an ariel themselves.
This can result in "blocking" the signal getting to the phone completely, or even amplifying it slightly.
This will vary from one person to the next.
If anyone has an oscilloscope, an HD2, and a bunch of people handy, they can test this for themselves.

Just confirmed this issue on my Omnia7.
This is retarded. Capacitive screens don't work that way.
not having any problem on my omnia 7...tried everything to try emulate some of the effects reported! not seeing any deterioration in sensitivity!
Not a pickle from my Omnia 7, Still as lush as ever and responsive as it should be, i've been mostly USING in on a pillow/soft surface when it's laying down next to me when i'm home and sitting here for hours on end.
Loving it even more when all these bugs/glitches come out and it's stomping them down.
I feel I should come back to this and apologise as I have found a pillow which messes up my phone's touch responsiveness too. Interesting.

What kind of pillow? This smells of static to me, seeing as capactive screens rely on the tiny electrical charges in your body. Polyester fabrics getsquite static, do they not?
It happens to me when I place it on my desk...
I noticed the same thing...but I didn't associate this with the soft surface, the touch screen doesn't work when it's plugged into the charger

I believe the manual is a load of BS. My iPad works fine when connected to my powerpoint. I've noticed that when the Omnia is charging via powerpoint its screen sensitivity does go down, BUT, when you hold the phone with your other hand, or even just touch part of the rear/side with one finger, the screen starts working flawlessly.... imo it could be some design flaw regarding conductivity
When I place my Omnia 7 on my car phone holder (from Capdase), the screen does not respond at times, and I can't seem to find any pattern why or how this happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Once I take it off the phone holder, the screen is working fine again.
I wrote it in the other thread... but I had this problem too and after I flashed the newest firmware it was gone. Now the screen responds perfect no matter where I place the phone.
You should check the thread with omnia firmware out
Another solution I found is that you would need to Hard reset your device not through the settings but turning off and than press/hold volume down + camera and power on. Than press the middle button twice and than you will not have anymore problems with touch screen.

o really?! I thought it was just magic and the magic couldn't work when the phone was placed on soft things! im so glad someone with intelligence could teach me about this capacitive thingy whoever he is!
you have completely cleared this up for me - i now see the error of my ways. must have been having hallucinations or something. sorry for this disruption everybody!
i hope the next version of our phone uses magic because that would be really cool!
on a side note to that, after updating my firmware yesterday this dosnt seem to happen anymore. stupid hallucinations!
Had this before, after the firmware Upgrade the Problem seems to be resolved but after some time ( 1 week or so ) it's back again.
Looks like there is a fix for the laying-flat-issue for the Focus:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11077163#post11077163
Maybe it works for some issues with the Omnia 7 as well. Did anybody already try?
Yes, have the same. If I put it on my couch, or bed. Sometimes also on hard surfaces. Doesn't bother me too much though, but it is weird.
I'm not trying to toot my own horn here...but I was literally the first person (or one of them at least) on Microsoft answers, Youtube and forums alike to raise concern about this issue.
It's a conductivity problem. As long as one hand is touching the back of the phone (sometimes near the top or sides too) then the touch screen will operate normally.
The reason it stuffs up when you have it flat is because you're not touching the back of the device, hence the conductivity flaw.
Check all this, it's a problem with the Omnia 7's, deal with it or chose another handset. I ended up keeping mine, I can live with it.

hey all i have two droid-x that have had default froyo 2.2.340 and also the newest OTA 4.5.596 and also CM7 which is what they both have.
i have had them setup exactly the same way when i run these tests.
on my (lets call it "the good droid-x") it has great wifi and cell phone radio reception
on my (lets call it "the bad droid-x") it has crappy wifi and cell phone radio reception
you can tell something is not right when they are sitting side by side with the identical software (as mentioned above)
i am guessing its a bad antenna connection and that the wifi and cellphone radios use the same antenna.
i did not check with BT but for sure 100% the wifi and cellphone radios are about 1/2 of what im getting with the good droid-x
could someone please pull up a picture and circle what they think the antenna might be so i can try and see if i have a break?
it could be also that maybe the chips are not getting enough power or something but the phones function the same it seems so i dont know.
if someone could shed some light it would be great
i switched batts and battery covers and that didnt do anything either.
thanks
just wanted to give an update
there was some connections crossing in the phone that should not have been
i cant believe phone did not blow up on me
the led connectors were all touching
dont ask me how the phone kept functioning but i seperated those 3 big led connectors and now everything is working good
Very glad to hear you found the problem. Where did you get this bad unit? Is it possible someone had already opened it up?

most definately
this was what it was when i got it
http://iowacity.craigslist.org/mob/2443460199.html
i checked it out at a walmart parking lot...everything worked but i didnt really notice that the signal strength on the gps, wifi and cell radio were really CRAPPY to put it mildly.
so i replaced the screen (was hoping that might have been part of the problem)
powered it all up and everything was functioning the same as it was (crappy)
so i thought it must be the antenna must have came loose or something
couldnt find any info on antenna...many of you know i been asking in here and phonearena and in irc but no one seems to know the exact location
so i decided to switch the motherboard out with my good droid-x and guess what it did the same thing.
so that told me it was on the motherboard for sure
so i got my magnifying glass out and found some bad areas right away
seperated the crossed connectors and put it back together and BAM
has a better signal then my good one
im a happy camper now
i have 2 droid-x`s
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
i circled the area in RED those led connectors were pushed into each other and the little standoff was smashed down.
if it would have been like the old camera FLASH`s where they charged up...i would have hated to see what would have happened to me when i took a picture
BOOM!!

then i let it cool down. and then i charged it to 100 percent. Voila! now the speaker hs gone crazy....... the bass sounds can't be heard; its like i'm using an old radio. And when i use the BACK key, HOME key, and RECENT APPS key, some other tak-tak sound comes other than the normal sound of the key. ANd when i play some music, a buzzing sound is there, ruining my experience:crying::crying:. and the heating goes boom boom!!! unbelievably hot even when I use FB Messenger!! plz help me guys!!! is this some software failure after supercooling and superheating or hardware failure? dont say hardware!! my daddy will kill me

Its probably the hardware. But dont tell your dad yet and try this if its possible.
Try opening the back of your phone and look at the battery if there are any changes like, it became slightly big. If this is the case try buying a new battery if not, its your HARDWARE. And also, your underlined statement really has no effect on the phone. The heating of your phone is the one that caused your device to malfunction.
Hope your daddy does not kill you.

Maybe, but the thing here is that your phone heated that much and probably caused the silver little things in your phone to melt making the other wires removed from their default base and going to another after being cooled off. Thats why.

Hello guys !!
So I just discovered my screen doesn't work well anymore. Nothing is broken and my phone didn't fall or anything, but now when I scroll my screen it's split in the middle of the screen.
For example when I scroll down my screen the right part follow my finger, but the left part is a bit late. There is a time lag everytime. I can see this disconnection when I'm watching videos too and that's really annoying. Also sometimes my screen goes black for few seconds and comes back to normal.
I tried to turn off and on my phone but it didn't change anything, restart it either. I'm not really good with technology so that were the only manipulations I tried. I don't know why my screen is like that. The only thing I can think is that the day before my phone turned off by it self because there was no more battery.
Please can you tell me if something like this happens to you, and if yes what did you do to fix it ? Or if anyone has a solution for me, I would be really grateful.
Thank you in advance.

Hey ! Thanks for your answer.
No I didn't install any apps at all lately. I did factory reset and it didn't fix the problem
But it's a bit better, it seems the screen doesn't go black anymore, but there is still the disconnection in the middle. Especially when I'm looking at videos or when I want to make picture.
I don't know what can be the problem
Try to squeeze the phone with your index finger and thumb, a half an inch besides the spot between the volume switch and power switch. There is an internal screen connector there that can get a bit loose

Thanks for your answer Waancho ! I tried your solution but it didn't work either. But now I think I might know why my screen is like that. When I turned it on the screen was split and the left part of the screen was higher than the right part. I know it isn't good to let the battery discharged completely.... ?
Do you think the battery is damaged ? If yes, is there a way to fix it ?

the battery has nothing to do with it. the display connector gets loose and does this all the time. Fortunately it never happened to me but i've seen more than 10 people with this problem
here's a couple pics for ya, the best solution is to take it apart and secure it but if you never did it then just push upon the screen, where my finger is pointing, about half or 1 cm from the side
