Wireless tethering on Epic - Epic 4G General

Why is wireless tethering so much faster on the evo than on the epic?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

How much faster (or slower)?

Switching from my Evo to epic
This was a concern. But my epic
Is on par with the evo speed. Monstrous where I live. I peak at 13.5mbps
..swyped from "A New Galaxy..."

IF you are talking about 4g speeds while tethering..its because EVO got a fix from the devs at Android-Wifi-Tether to make it work with 4g while Epic did not..if enough people complain maybe they'll fix epic too lol

Well yea I was getting about 5mbps tethering on evo while on the epic I'm lucky to get 2.5

Yes its a known issue with the Android-Wifi-Tether/MobileAP and Epic..EVO had same issue for 4g in 2.2 but it was recently fixed..they didn't fix the Epic yet unfortunately

Hey I have a question .. I have the epic and my girl has the evo now we both live in a somewhat good 4g area and I've been using her evo to WIRED tether to my ps3 cause I think its faster now my question is I haven't rooted her phone or mine cause...(epic waiting for froyo and evo being lazy lol) now my question is yu said the wireless tethering has been a problem with seending enough speed since 2.2? Does that mean stock 2.2 and having it wired tethered and is wireless tetthering faster then wired cause if it is I am rooting asap.

Wireless and Wired should generally be the same speed..or at least difference "should" be insignificant in general. The problem for 2.2 tethering wireless was fixed according to the author of android-wifi-tether at least.

So I'm from Austin myself, and if I tether my epic 4g ...I will go from a rarely 11 mb/s to 22mb/s?
(Assuming I'm at the right location to get that speed of course)
So this is what samsung was wasting time doing instead of updating our phones. )

Just a note,
This is about i9000 galaxy s, not the epic or other galaxy s.
BUT, its still good news as we might also get this.

It is linking of WiFi devices to each other without the need of the well known middle man: the router. Seems logical to expect this feature in our phones...right?

Idk but my phone will connect to my wifes phone running her 4g and wireless tether... don't know if that is what they were talking about... I do it all the time though cuz she gets good 4g in the house and I do not
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
If you set up two rooted epics with wireless tether you can run the wifi file transfer on the phone you want the files from while running wifi tether simultaniously you can send files 1.5kbps to each other without a router. Juss sayin
Edit: its kinda of a ***** but it works
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Ya I get what your saying but my phone gets great speed off of my wifes evo 4g... I have epic 4g... I get better download and upload speeds running wifi off her wireless tether than I do from just my phone

Nope. If they were going to do it, EI22 was their chance. I asked via Twitter and got a negative response.

WiMax and ROMs

newbie question, but i am wondering - when you root and flash a ROM, does it automatically break wiMax? i have a GB/AOSP Hero and likely will be switching to the Epic. the Wimax issue is one thing i am not sure how it works regarding ROMs, etc.
it seems it is ROM dependent but i want to get clarification on this. if it is, i fail to see why one would flash a ROM that doesnt include WiMax support.
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA App
CM7 alpha4 and the gb leak are the only roms I'm aware of that currently have no wimax. I'm pretty sure all froyo roms have wimax working. Also no need to backup wimax.
thanks epic4GEE. still deciding between the Epic and Evo Shift. had a Moment before my Hero and am still very weary of another Samsung.

My mother had a Samsung Moment and it was by far her most horrible phone. It was constantly going into Airplane Mode, and wouldn't reset until you rebooted.
The Epic I can confirm fixed that issue, this phone is also a lot more powerful than any other phone currently on the market. (Atleast for Sprint.)

As a former owner of the Moment, I can relate. I threw my Moment away the day the Epic was released. Samsung was sketchy with it for the longest time. They seemed to have done though what they never did with the moment.. Listened to the yelling and complaints and did a decent job of mending relationships and getting Froyo out.
The only ghost left is the gps. Its more reliable than the moment by far but still randomly reminds you it is a Samsung product.
It is by and large a great phone.

I bought an Epic yesterday.
Just now, trying to figure out the damn WiMax. It disconnects no matter what, and I'm in San Antonio which had one of the first networks here for WiMax. Tried 3 ROMs and still no difference.
Beyond that, I *LOVE* this phone. Running Syndicate at the moment.

Wimax is finicky deal, it works in my house, but only if I hold the phone right and I'm in the right spot....just the nature of high frequencies.

Realistic timeframe for ICS?

I'm wondering how long you guys think it will take for ICS to get ported to the Epic. I mean, realistically, it took us the better part of a year to get CM7 (and it's still only a release candidate). I'm pretty invested in this phone, having bought a car dock and game gripper for it. But it seems to be such an oddball in terms of development. My buddy's got a Fascinate, and seeing his 4.0 screenshots has been making me very jealous. Been thinking of trading in for a Nexus S or Evo Shift. Thoughts? And I hate to pimp, but if you've got either of those phones, and are looking for a Boost Mobile Epic, I'd consider a trade. PM me.
While it's on my mind, the aforementioned Fascinate guy stated that he gets 600k downstream on VZW when tethering, 1meg in good signal area. I've never even approached that...fastest I ever got was 200k, usually closer to 100k. Is this a difference in the radios between Galaxy models, or a symptom of VZW vs. Sprint?

1. ICS will take a shorter time than cm7
2. The nexus s is way better than the shift. The shift isn't pure Google and is reeeeeaaaallllyyyy slow
3. VZW. > sprint
Also, our cm7 RC works perfect. Everything works fine...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I mean it ain't gold yet. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge step for this phone, but we could realistically be looking at a 12 month gap between the time when CM7 was official, to the time when it was official for the Epic. I don't think I'd enjoy waiting that long for CM9, y'know?

I would wait for an LTE phone to come out before switching.
Read the thread about a wimax bounty (the last couple posts). Since you are on boost, you don't have wimax anyways, right?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, and even if I could hack it together, there's no Wimax coverage where I am anyways. Here's the question, though...I'm sticking with Boost, and I doubt they'll be offering LTE anytime soon. Still wait, you think?
Still wait for quad core phones.

You live in an area with crappy Sprint service. I get around 1-1.3 mbps on 3G. If I am tethering it will be on 4G though (4-6mbps).

This is the only phone ive been so impatient with waiting for it to come out
yeah sprint would have $200 of my money coming may 7th guaranteed... actually feeling a little nostalgic about being in the exact same 4g situation I was when i got my original EVO... maybe its a bit of Stockholm syndrome

If im not mistaken, I think you can still connect to "regular" 4g if LTE isnt available
Or do you just not 4g where you live in general?
Pretty certain there is no wimax (regular 4g) on the new Evo. I've read the 8960 chip can't/doesnt support it. So I don't believe that's an option.

Sprints "regular" 4g is wimax. I'm pretty certain this phone will not support wimax.
