WiMax and ROMs - Epic 4G General

newbie question, but i am wondering - when you root and flash a ROM, does it automatically break wiMax? i have a GB/AOSP Hero and likely will be switching to the Epic. the Wimax issue is one thing i am not sure how it works regarding ROMs, etc.
it seems it is ROM dependent but i want to get clarification on this. if it is, i fail to see why one would flash a ROM that doesnt include WiMax support.

CM7 alpha4 and the gb leak are the only roms I'm aware of that currently have no wimax. I'm pretty sure all froyo roms have wimax working. Also no need to backup wimax.

thanks epic4GEE. still deciding between the Epic and Evo Shift. had a Moment before my Hero and am still very weary of another Samsung.

My mother had a Samsung Moment and it was by far her most horrible phone. It was constantly going into Airplane Mode, and wouldn't reset until you rebooted.
The Epic I can confirm fixed that issue, this phone is also a lot more powerful than any other phone currently on the market. (Atleast for Sprint.)

As a former owner of the Moment, I can relate. I threw my Moment away the day the Epic was released. Samsung was sketchy with it for the longest time. They seemed to have done though what they never did with the moment.. Listened to the yelling and complaints and did a decent job of mending relationships and getting Froyo out.
The only ghost left is the gps. Its more reliable than the moment by far but still randomly reminds you it is a Samsung product.
It is by and large a great phone.

I bought an Epic yesterday.
Just now, trying to figure out the damn WiMax. It disconnects no matter what, and I'm in San Antonio which had one of the first networks here for WiMax. Tried 3 ROMs and still no difference.
Beyond that, I *LOVE* this phone. Running Syndicate at the moment.

Wimax is finicky deal, it works in my house, but only if I hold the phone right and I'm in the right spot....just the nature of high frequencies.

Well, I've heard of reports of the G2 (which has the same processor) going up to 1.6ghz and maintaining stability.
nice! 1.2+ ussually reboots the evos :-( it be nice to port the rom and kernel this thing uses but since it has a different processor dont think it would be much of a benefit.

Its really more of a rebranded, changed-hinge, G2/desire z than an Evo. I would assume its called the Evo Shift in the hopes of riding the Evo-love wave that sprint has going on.

I agree, I'm really not a fan of the blue-ish color nor the trackpad. It sort of just looks silly to me.
I think Sprint may be exploring the idea of marketing their Android phones as Evo's. Similar to Verizon branding their phones as Droid.

Nexus S 4G Release Date Announced

"The highly anticipated Nexus S™ 4G1 from Google™ goes on sale in all Sprint channels, including www.sprint.com, on Sunday, May 8, for $199.99 (plus tax) with a new line or eligible upgrade and two-year service agreement. Extending the company’s 4G device leadership yet again, it is the fourth 4G phone available and 20th 4G device announced from Sprint."
Look here for details
Engadget just picked it up
Thought some of you might be interested.
I'm interested in so far as this improves Epic gingerbread support.
Would the nexus S end up needing a diff custom rom? Like a sprint version?

i personally will be enjoying my new ns4g on may 8th, i will enjoy it even more when ice cream comes out. really and truly each device has their own market, there is no reason to slam down one just because.
one of the biggest draws for me is the software, within 4 days cm7 will be on the nexus s 4g. the nexus is still getting updates that leaves me very optimistic about the nexus s. ideally they would have brought a nice new lg nexus instead but hey whichever

Since the Nexus S 4G is coming out soon and of course it'll get a source code, how much will it affect CM7 development?

It depends on what hardware elements are the EXACT SAME, for instance it won't help with the camera because they have different sensors, but it might help with the GPS.

That's right. I would venture 90+% of people have NO CLUE what Gingerbread is, nor what version of Android they're currently running. They see an update come through, install it, and go about their business. A select few of them may notice something different with the looks, but that's about it. They may notice something looks different, but only because one of their apps (I'm thinking Eclair vs. Froyo messaging) looks a bit different. If that's the case, they probably assume the update was just for that app...
If Samsung is throwing around Gingerbread all over the Epic (as well as most of the US galaxy s series) have not gotten, maybe it is the carriers holding everything up. All of the updated GBs have been through Kies and for some reasn Sprint don't want the Epic on Kies.

I think the Epic touch's does
At this point i'm stuck with my epic for another year min. While i'm fine with that it would really easy to live with if I had an official release. at this point I wish they would just release what they have good or bad and our awesome developers here will fix it. Heck what ever they release wouldn't be as good as what our developers do anyway. So close enough I say, release EH17 source and get out of our way!!!!

Realistic timeframe for ICS?

I'm wondering how long you guys think it will take for ICS to get ported to the Epic. I mean, realistically, it took us the better part of a year to get CM7 (and it's still only a release candidate). I'm pretty invested in this phone, having bought a car dock and game gripper for it. But it seems to be such an oddball in terms of development. My buddy's got a Fascinate, and seeing his 4.0 screenshots has been making me very jealous. Been thinking of trading in for a Nexus S or Evo Shift. Thoughts? And I hate to pimp, but if you've got either of those phones, and are looking for a Boost Mobile Epic, I'd consider a trade. PM me.
While it's on my mind, the aforementioned Fascinate guy stated that he gets 600k downstream on VZW when tethering, 1meg in good signal area. I've never even approached that...fastest I ever got was 200k, usually closer to 100k. Is this a difference in the radios between Galaxy models, or a symptom of VZW vs. Sprint?

I mean it ain't gold yet. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge step for this phone, but we could realistically be looking at a 12 month gap between the time when CM7 was official, to the time when it was official for the Epic. I don't think I'd enjoy waiting that long for CM9, y'know?

Got my replacement Epic

I got my replacement Epic after true bricking the other. After two years with this phone my first true brick. Even Sprint couldn't Odin it.
Anyways, maybe its my imagination, but the modem and wi-fi seem stronger, and it seems quicker? Is it possible the rev'd the hardware in this? Probably not, but don't ruin it for me.

I am probably completely wrong about this but I feel like phones start to slow down over time. I had an Evo 4G that I constantly flashed new ROMs onto and over time it started to get really sluggish. I went back to my go to smooth and stable ROMs and even those did the Evo no justice. I have a friend that says it's exactly the same with his HTC Inspire.
This is exactly how I felt about my Samsung epic 4g. It felt as if the hardware wore out, (particularly the hard drive) due to dozens, maybe hundreds of flashes.
