The manual says that in addition to the H and E icons that appear above the up/down data arrows, there's a 3G icon. Has anyone seen the 3G appear? I'm either on H or E, but have not seen 3G on this phone. I'm thinking H will appear for both 3G and 4g/hsdpa+. Is there any way to tell which you're really on?
I have yet to see it. I'm always either on E or H.

i have never seen it. i only have 3g in my area not 4g and its always says h all the time
I have seen a G show up for a split second once....i thought it was just me seeing things. I didn't read the manual but when I saw this post I figured I'd respond.

I also caught a quick glimpse of a G today right after I woke the phone up, but it quickly went to E. I guess the H is for both 3G and 4G/HSDPA+...kind of sucks that there's no easy way to differentiate between those two imo. I'm guessing they did that on purpose, so that people wouldn't realize how much of the time they are really only getting 3G speeds on this '4G' phone.
On that note, I've been running speedtest and generally only getting around .5-.6 mbps d/l around the house. While driving to a few places around the city (Kansas City) today, I did get up to a max of 4 mbps, but mostly more like 2-3 mbps. Are these reasonable real-world speeds?
i was gonna say yes until i realized you had a . in front of your 5/6... idk but too me thats really low, my nexus one which wasnt 4g used to get 5-6mbs here in LA

For those who live in an area with HSPA+, I was wondering if it would show an H for HSPA+ (like e for edge, E for EDGE, 3G for well...,) on the stock ROM. Because I live in Los Angeles and it looks like T-Mobile is finally rolling out HSPA+ out here in their latest press release and would like to know what connection my phone is using. (Current ROM/Radio in my sig.)
I think you would have to load a custom rom or cab file for that. I still use the stock rom as well and only see 3g here in Tampa. Try doing a search.
i have a question live in nj and i know that hspa is in ny. i just did a speed test at speakeasy.net/speedtest and i got 3.29mbps download and 1.14 mbps upload. sorry i am a noob when it comes to this is this any good. not to mention tmo hasnt announced hspa in nj
i am also interested in knowing if angone does get an h cuz i only see 3g

Im in Tampa, one of the markets just officially announced as having HSPA+. HSPA+ was actually turned on here in Tampa last week. I had a Tmobile sales rep visit the company I work for yesterday and he confirmed it was turned on last Wed, I noticed the speed bump last Thur
However the indicator still shows 3g
I love how fast I can upload full 5mpix images to twitpic now, used to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs for about a minute or two. They seem to upload in about 30 seconds now. That was how I noticed the speed upgrade last Thur, I was literally like WTF an image has never uploaded that quick.

The stock tmo ROM won't display an "H"...you'll have to install one of the many available custom taskbar icon sets for it to show that. However, I have yet to see any confirmation that having the "H" displayed on your taskbar means anything other than just the fact your connection (i.e. your closest tower) is capable of HSPA7.2 or better...regardless of whether it has the backhaul connection to support it or not.
And since my first Energy rom 2 1/2 months ago it's switched between 3G and H all the time, way before HSPA+. Now speed is the only gauge to know if I have HSPA+ or just HSPA.
I'm currently just out of HSPA+ range north of Seattle... 2 miles south I get 5.7mbps speedtests, at home still suffer with 900kbps even with H and 4 bars showing.

I am going to guess that the ROMs that differentiate between 3G and H are probably showing 3G for UMTS and H for HSPA/HSPA+
so my hspa speeds are all over the place one Minute they are below 500kb/s the next they are over 2000kbs .. odd i say

Mine seem pretty consistently in the 2mbit download 1mbit upload, but ive seen spikes as high as 5mbit for download. probably all depends on how good the signal is in your area and the load on the cell tower that you are on.
That's what I was figuring sirphunkee (outside of just downloading a icon set to show H). Thanks all for your answers guys.
just recently a guy posted about the *#*#4636#*#* code and changing network preference. well fooling around at work yesterday i tried it out and i picked "WCDMA only" and before this, i get prettu good 3g and H signals but very few edge spots (inside). after i selected that though my signal was still on H speeds so i didnt think much of it but its been 15 hours and ive been around and my phone hasnt even as much as dropped down to 3g. so maybe or maybe not this could help you guys out but i just wanted to give a heads up. try out for yourself
p.s. i also heard it helps with battery because your phone isnt always busy switching back and forth between network.

Well, according to T-Mobile's G2 Guide:
H = Connected to the fastest 3G networks (UMTS or HSDPA)
E = Connected to the second-fastest network (EDGE)
G = Connected to a 2G network (GPRS)
You will see an "H" while you are using 3G. This means the "H" is shared for UMTS or HSPA as well ("4G"). I don't agree that this is how it should be noted, but that is how it is noted on the G2 without any 3rd party widgets installed.
H and G only in West Texas
Out here we are still stuck on a 3G network. (No idea when HSDPA or + will be here), but NO EDGE, unless you roam... It is 3G/H or GPRS... It kinds sucks, thank goodness for WIFI..

Sorry you are wrong. H = 3G or 4G (HSPA or HSPA+)
I have that widget too, but the OP never said that widget is what he was looking at. Presumably, he was looking at the stock notification on the phone, showing "H". My point is that he would see "H" while on 3G or 4G, so he'd only be able to tell the difference by speed tests or some other measurement (such as a 3rd party widget).
I wanna get more replies and see from more people, the problem with me is, at school in campus the signal is really spotty, where I can even have 3 or 4 bars and be still on edge.
Another thing is where when the signal goes haywire, it will drop from either utms or hspa into edge and the data connection will just stop and it won't work unless I get the H. Its been happening for a week now and I'm up to a week on my remorse period and want to handle this before its too late.

3g = h.
h = 3g.
Only custom roms show H. But even if it "just" shows 3g, you're still connected to the same network.
It's like the difference between pancakes and flapjacks. Some people call em pancakes. Some people call em flapjacks.
In the end they're the same damn thing.
^ true, but sometimes in my area I will have 3G, sometiems H, and sometimes Edge... (on my Nexus One). Seems odd that the phone makes a distinction between 3G and H if there is no difference. I also prefer the H and wish it showed on my phone (Vibrant this time) instead.

The distinction sometimes refers to basic UMTS, but at least in the United States, every UMTS tower has HSPA upgrades. The reason the distinction even started was because in Europe, there were many towers that were UMTS-only without HS[D/U]PA upgrades. That's not the case here.
On the other hand, now ROMS sometimes show H for HSPA+ areas. That is all fine and dandy, except that your Vibrant doesn't go faster than 7.2mbps HSDPA, or 5.6mbps HSUPA. It's not like when your phone is showing "H", that you're magically going to get faster speeds than your phone was designed to achieve.
So when it comes back to the OPs question, of "connecting" to a faster network, it's irrelevant. Once you're on 3g, it's all the same network. HSPA+ and HSDPA and UMTS are all the same network - just different data upgrades. And your phone will ALWAYS try to access the fastest data upgrade that it can.

it's depend on the phone i think. Before i switch to the vibrant (3G display), I used HD2.
On the HD2, i got H notification all the time. And speedtests on both phones yielded same results.
^^ great read, and I understood all of it... I just never understood why sometimes I got 3G and sometimes I got H in the notification bar, makes sense I suppose. I realize the same speeds were usually achieved.
Does anyone know if the G2 displays hspa+ in the phone signal? I only see UMTS or HSDPA and I live in Dallas which supposedly was one of the first cities to get HSPA+.
I've searched around but I have never found any concrete evidence regarding the issue. Fastest speed I've seen is about 6 Mbps, which I think is just standard 3G.

When it says HSPDA it is on HSPA+, UMTS is 3G. Only reason I know this is because I live in Chicago and we just got it, so ever since, it has said HSPDA. Before, it only ever read UMTS.

My phone almost never stays on G and if nothing else, is only on H and fluctuates to edge in some of the weaker signal areas.
G = gprs
e = edge

That does seem pretty rubbish, if it shows "H" even on when you're on plain 3G speeds.
Just so everyone knows. This discussion is not about the H in the status bar. We already know it displays H for all high speed connection types.
It is about the network type displayed in the staus and how to determine if you ade on HSPA+.

The only other option you have is to grab the "Mobile Signal Widget" from the Android Market. That will accurately tell you your signal strength and what connection signal you're surfing. I.E it'll show 3G if you're on 3G and H if you're on HSPA+.

You will never see the +, it will only display H. 3G is kind of like a battery saver mode(at least to me anyways). It seems to be there when the phone is idling. 14's not bad. Highest I get in my house is 6, lol. Outside in better areas I have seen 18.
Good to know that I won't see an H+, so at least that is normal. I should probably also have mentioned that I live in an HSPA+42 area, so I was hoping I'd see something in the 30+ range. I've tested this at different times (and different areas) each day over the past 10 days.
:EDIT:
Also just noticed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016783 which showed me where to look to see some more information as to what I'm connected to (3G, HSPA catagory) under "Mobile network type" (in "About Phone") . Looks like I need to see HSPA:24 which means I'm connected to the HSPA+42. Currently only seeing HSPA:15, so I'll keep an eye on this when doing speed tests in the future. I wish the speedtest app would list this info when doing the test.
