Connection fluctuating between 3G and E

Many people are reporting connection fluctuating between 3G and E with stock ROM.
Anyone using any of the custom ROMs on TMo US HD2, do you see any improvement (if you had this issue with stock)?

I know for the 4 or 5 days i ran stock T-Mo ROM i was almost always in 3G...now since i've flashed to custom ROM's anytime i'm sending or receiving data i'm always in H (HSPA)...

running dutty HG 1.5, the signal switches between 3G and H depending how close im sitting near the window; at home it is constant 3g in the living room and constant fluctuating between H, 3G and E in my room

I am getting exactly the same thing. I wonder if this is affecting the speed of the phone.

in fact, mine looses signal completely. the phone is awesome, but the network doesn't live up to the phone LOL

They're still rolling that out lol...only a few more months...

Still fluctuating between 3G and E... mostly E though.

I think it's really up to where you are located. My signal fluctuates crazily between 3G and EDGE, and once in a blue moon HSPA.

My 3G signal is strong in the Inland Empire. I'm about 50 miles out from Los Angeles and I rarely see Edge. I don't see the H at all though.

HD2 in HSPA+ coverage areas

Does anyone here have an HD2 with stock TMO USA ROM in one of TMO's HSPA+ coverage areas? Does the signal indicator remain 3G, or does it switch to the H icon?
I'm not asking for users of cooked ROMs, since we all know the icons can differ depending on what the chef choose to use on their ROM.

i'm in the 904, and mine switches between 3g and h. if i'm in the living room, it stays on h, in the bedroom 3g.

My connection icon goes back and forth between 3G and H a lot, usually flipping to H whenever I connect and am actively passing data, then back to 3G when the connection is on but idle.
I am using a stock ROM, but...I'm using aftermarket taskbar icons for notifications like that. I understand that the stock notification icons don't ever seem to switch to H, only once you have some non-stock icons there does that happen. I don't remeber mine ever switching before I added the new icons.
Honestly though I don't think it does much more right now than let you know you've got a HSPA+ capable link between you and the tower...but from what I've read T-mobile still hasn't yet flipped the switch on the backhaul elements (from the tower to the network) on most of the towers that are ready for it.
EDIT: Also, have you made sure that you have HSDPA enabled in your phone settings?

I am also in Jacksonville Florida (904) I have a cooked ROM, there is a huge difference between the two. So trust me when I say the towers around here are very much active.

Actually I was digging on this a little more, and saw a thread on ppcgeeks about it that you had posted in lol.
Reading that and some others, it seems that there's a bit of confusion (I was too)...what Tmo has already enabled on the network now is HSPA 7.2, which is not exactly the same thing as the HSPA+ (theoretical limits over 54Mbps). HSPA+ is what's being tested and exists in a few cities now, more coming 2nd half of this year.
I've read confirmation that the HD2 is HSPA 7.2-capable, but I've found nowhere that says for sure that it's able to use HSPA+...lot's of speculation, no hard confirmation. I have however seen several indications that no phones in Tmo's current lineup have the HSPA+ secret sauce

Yeah ive also read that the radio in the HD2 is only HSPA 7.2, here's hoping that at least the the HSPA+ roll out will allow us to make full use of the 7.2 megabits it can pull down.
Question though, if TMO's tower radios are software updatable to HSPA+ then why couldn't the HD2 or any other phone's radio be software updatable to HSPA+ as well?

is the 560kbps in your sig what you're regularly seeing on TMO up there in Jacksonville? cause i don't have much trouble hitting a megabit per second at times here in Tampa.

I hate living in Utah. We are always the last to get these fast speeds.

i live in long beach, ca. and work at the port of los angeles. in these areas, i get a mixture of edge, 3g, and HSPA.
Specifically, I get a mixture of Edge and HSPA here at home. I get mostly HSPA when I'm driving outside the house locally.
I get mostly HSPA and a little 3g mixture at work.

I get a good mix of H, 3G and E in my area....im in Jersey..less than 10 minutes from NYC

Weird thing is i was getting HSPA (The H symbol on the signal strength thingy) since a month back. I am in the 818 area (Los Angeles - The valley)

im in the philadelphia market area where it started and with the shipped rom my device was in 3g mode all the time didnt notice that it was on h mode till i put on a cooked rom now i never see the 3g icon its always in h but the 3g will come and go to h as it pleases depending on location and if the hspa covers that area

Guys there is a difference between HSPA+ and HSDPA/HSUPA..
HSDPA/HSUPA is capable of maximum speeds of 7.2 mbps, but HSPA+ is theoretically capable of maximum speeds of 56 mbps, ofcourse us end users never see anything near the maximum. Optimistically it should increase the AVERAGE throughput or download speed for us on HSDPA as the backend at the cell towers will have much more capabilities.

Very true, and commonly confused by many.
Although HSPA7.2 is technically already available in all of T-Mobile's existing 3G markets, like inf3rno said those with compatible handsets (HD2, etc) probably won't see everything it can deliver until the HSPA+ capable backend is turned up on your local towers.

I keep getting conflicting answers. Is the t-mobile HD2 HSPA+ capable? Either now or with future rom updates? I am very curious.

I too am keeping my eyes open for a more solid answer to that question. The most believeable-sounding one I've seen so far indicates that NO current hardware is HSPA+ capable (including the HD2), not until certain new models are released later this year (and no, I didn't see any sign of which exact ones will have that).
So, I'm expecting to not fully benefit from HSPA+ (as opposed to HSPA7.2)....but I could certainly be wrong, and would love it if I were!

7.2 is fine with me. 21 or less would be great, but can't get everything. Besides, i would not expect to reach anywhere near 21 megs down. Or i won't believe it until i see proof or see it in person. lol.

I'm in NYC, have HD2 stock rom pluse cookies home tab.
i did mobile speed test, and speedtest . i get 1847kbps down and 650kbps up. ive never seen a H on my handset but i get faster then hspda speeds. the other night i got 9 mbps down and 4mbps up.

You will never be able to use HSPA+ on a Slide, T-Mobile does not claim that you will be able to either.

t-mobile does claim that you can, and you can. i have experienced 6 times faster speed since they turned on the tower near my place. i have HSPA+ at home and now average 3.5-4.5 Mbps rather than the .8 Mbps i had with standard 3G. my apn says epc.tmobile.com i do not know if there are other settings needed, but i am using CM6RC1 and getting phenomenal speeds(compared to some friends that have EVO on 4G)

That's cause sprint's "4G" is not as fast as Tmo's HSPA+...There was an article on their speeds on engadget.

I'm not wrong.
There are no HSPA+ phones presently being sold in the United States, that being said you can get up to 7.2mbps on T-Mobile HSPA network at present on the Vibrant, Slide, and others

He's right they can take advantage of the speeds, but are not actually HSPA+ phones, the first one will be the t-mobile G2 as announced by t-mobile.

This HSPA+ has been pretty awesome..Out of every person I know that has tmobile and a 3G enabled phone I have been the only one able to pick it up and my wife has the Vibrant, plus several others that I know with the Slide and other android phones... It started about a week ago when I first noticed that 3G turn into an H. I am running the latest CyanogenMod and I have not altered any settings on my phone whatsoever. The only thing I have been able to come up with is that its because of the Froyo ROM... Anyone agree?? But this s**t is great! I ran a speedtest while I was at work yesterday and I almost got a 6 Mbps connection and a 1.5 Mbps upload while connected to the HSPA network!!!
But like others said earlier in the thread our Slides will not be able to take full advantage of the HSPA+ speeds and will never be able to...but Ill take it because its just not everyday that a cell phone provider gives you 6x speed boost and doesn't charge you extra for it... GO T-MOBILE!!!

I'm pretty sure the only reason you're getting the "H" instead of the "3G" logo is because in the CyanogenMOD 6 Stable release, the "3G" graphic was replaced with the "H".

I have not used froyo on the SLide, the "H" icon is included with every rom but if cyan changed the name of the H icon to replace 3G then it would make sense, but i doubt he would do that to trick people. Every rom has the H icon in the framework folder.

He did not replace it, I am running a CM6 rom and in certain areas I will pick up HSPA, but in most places I go in Huntsville, AL its 3G signal, with the 3G icon showing in my status bar.
There is also a noticable difference in browsing and download speeds when I am able to pull HSPA, so its not just displaying it in error.

On the stock ROM you never see the "H" icon, but if I look in About Phone -> Network I often see "HSDPA" under mobile network type. I assume T-Mobile has mapped the 3G icon to that network type to minimize user confusion. I also see the 3G icon when connected to a UMTS network.
As has been pointed out earlier, that doesn't mean you will get the HSPA+ speeds and in fact they haven't even rolled out HSPA+ in my area yet.

I thought it was the radio update that had the H in it.
Using Chiefz rom I get H when I'm by my school.

Check under settings, about phone, status and look at what it says under Mobile Network Type. If it says HSDPA you will see the H icon, if it say UMTS you will see 3G. The H Icon is showing up because it is the begginings of HSPA+ without the fiber back haul ran to the tower, or they haven't switched it on yet. The phone sees the H network and displays the H icon, it doesn't know that it isn't HSPA+ or HSDPA, if your were still stock you would only ever see 3G.

So does that mean that stock rom (I have ChiefzReloaded's modified 1.35.531 rom) still takes advantage of HSPA+ even though it will only show 3G on the status bar? Or would I have to switch to another ROM to take advantage of it?
I remember when I was testing which rom I liked, I had tried a 2.2 rom and seen the H in my status bar, but never tested the speed. At the moment, I don't get speeds faster than 750 kbps down and 70 kbps up.. really disappointed since they already have HSPA+ here in Houston (and its suburbs).

Look to see if youre on UMTS, thats 3G...if it says HSPA then you will see H..

Mine says HSDPA. So I guess that is because they haven't flipped the switch here yet. Thanks for the information.

I am running a stock ROM and under mobile network type I usually see "HSDPA" even though the "3G" icon appears. The point is that on the stock ROM you will see the "3G" icon whether you are connected to a UMTS or HSDPA network, and on the CM ROM you see the "H" icon when you connect to an HSDPA network. But the icon does not limit your speed. You will still get the benefit of HSDPA (and to some degree HSPA+) networks either way.

hspa plus south florida

Ok, my hspa+ does not work, my top speeds have been 3.2 ....I was wondering if anyone else here in south florida is picking up quicker speeds, I'm using the quick speeds app to see what network speed I'm running also, If you guys know any other one I can use please let me know.

Its been really random for me. I dont think hspa+ is active in all of south florida.
However the other night I was getting 7-9 Mbps constantly. I use speedtest.net app.

Miami or Ft Lauderdale? I know West Palm wont be active until the end of the year i think

I drove around today between Hollywood and boca - no H+ indicator at all. The best speed test I've seen was 7mbps on Hollywood Blvd. Thing is, my Nexus One supports HSDPA, so not a huge difference between the two devices in that regard.
I'm sick of T-Mo's bull**** on this, their coverage map is retarded and we can't get a clear idea of wtf service we are supposed to be getting.
That, among many other reasons (especially MMC write protection), is why my G2 goes back to T-Mo this week.

Just to add, Im also in South FLA, miami to be exact and I too have been experiencing pretty odd signals on my G2. Sometimes my speeds are blazing fast then all of a sudden I'm running on edge with super low speeds.
It seems to me as the phone has trouble staying connected to one network and is constantly switching.
(I'm on my 2nd G2 btw since I thought it was a hardware related issue)

Go into settings / about phone / status - you will see exactly what network type you are connected to (UMTS, HSDPA, etc) I'm not sure how + would show up, or if the indicator at the top changes, but you should be able to tell from that screen or the "Phone Information" screen (dial *#*#4636#*#*)

It's crazy, in westchester I get pretty nice 3G speeds, but I go to kendall and I'm on edge. And it seems like its the most random switchoff too, because 5 steps in one direction I'm back on 3G, so I don't know if it's the phone or tmo's network. I expect edge in the middle of BFE, not in the middle of a pretty densely populated area.
add.: I've never seen my phone connect to the HSPA network, ever. The UMTS 3G has been enough to get me by I guess, it's just the random edge switching thats confusing me.

i live in miami, near the miami international airport. on average my nexus one would run about 1.5-2.5mb per second. with an occasional spike around the 4mb realm.
in contrast, my g2 is getting me 2-4.2 on average with spikes as high as 9mb per second.

Here in Boca the fastest i have gotten is around 3 Mbps in East Boca. In West Boca i only get edge at my house , i have to use wifi at home.
Side note: wow there are alot of South Floridians here, lol.

I live in palm city about 15 minutes from west palm and i get around 7 mbps and it says im on HSPDA network?

Froyo won't ever say HSPA or anything of that sort, it always will say HSDPA or UMTS, depending on where you're at.

HSPA+ is not 4G network like sprint it is simply a boost to the 3G network. On 3G you would never ever achieve a download speed of 4mb down constantly there for H+ is working how it should. I am getting anywhere from 3mb to 7mb down in NYC and evryone should know that in the city the service kinda blows.
What we should be upset about is the fact they stated we will achieve up to 20mb down. Still I also believe that its too soon for H+ to get these speeds as these "towers" are fairly new and not everywhere yet.
Give it time people and figure out how far you are from your H+ towers. I reach what I do only from 4+ miles away. I still think it isn't bad as it is faster then regular 3G

HSDPA is HSPA and HSPA+ - both appear as "H" in the signal indicator.
UMTS appears as "3G" in the signal indicator.
There is no distinction between HSPA and HSPA+ according to T-Mobile - the phone will display H/HSDPA for either.

Actually your'e wrong on a couple of points here...
First off, the G2 (and MyTouch HD) have only been advertised to do 14mbps. The 21mbps upgrade does not happen until next year.
Second, just because you have a certain connection, that doesn't mean you can pull that much bandwidth from the internet. There are many obstacles: Traffic on your local cell, insufficient backhaul bandwidth to the tower, any connectivity issues between your tower and the other end of the connection, etc.
This applies to any sort of service, cable, dsl, mobile, etc: Just because you have X mbps connection does not mean that you will see X mbps to every site on the web.
On DSL, for example, you are less limited by others in your area, you have a 1:1 connection that terminates at your local central office. But on Cable or Wireless, you are sharing the available bandwidth X:1 with all others in your "neighborhood" (cable) or cell (wireless).
So your actual speed depends on many factors. Take speed tests with a grain of salt, the bigger issue for mobile is latency, not bandwidth. All the bandwidth in the world still makes a 300ms round-trip time "feel" slow.

Same here, I seem to get the best reception around 137th Ave and Coral way actually. (A go there alot to eat at some place)
And the speeds there are almost at 1MB/sec (Yes i'm saying 1MegaByte not megabit)
But a few hundred feet west of that spot and I'm already running on Edge. O_O

Actually, there is no real 4G network yet. Sprint, like T-Mobile, have used the term 4G for marketing purposes.

With the HSPA+ infrastructure upgrades, T-Mobile also gained the ability for HSDPA to cap at 7.2mbps. So in reality, you might see 6+mbps.
As for the coverage in urban areas, Verizon's frequency is better suited to penetrate buildings and urban environments. This is why they have been so successful in cities like NYC, while GSM-based providers have trouble with weak spots around any given corner.

The stock "signal indicator" on the notification bar will never display 3G on the G2.

I'm in the Tampa area, and I get 3-4Mbps d/l speeds. Occasionally I will get 8 or 9Mbps down. Upload speeds are consistently 1.5Mbps.

Question about 4G network Speed

I work in Los Angeles and have full bars with the "H" showing all the time. I go and do the speed test and the highest download spped I get is 1.6. Is it that I'm just in a bad area? I see alot of people here getting alot better speeds than me. I just wanted to know if you have to enable the HDSPA+ 4G or does it automatically locate this network depending where you are. I only ask this becasue I see apps that you can choose to be on 2G,3G,4g speeds. Thanks!

I am in San Diego and although in a 4G area I get most of the time 0.8-1.8 download speed. In some spotty areas I get up to 2.5 down. Last weekend I was in Anaheim in Disneyland and although I was on H (four bars) i got 0.2 down...speed depends on reception, area, how many people use it in that area.

the H is 4G but its kinda iffy cus everywhere i used to get a 3G i just get an H now with 3G speeds... a lot of people including myself have said they hardly ever see the G anymore... may just be to get people to think their always on 4G so buying a 4G phone was worth the money... but to the actual speed thing if your in LA you should be getting way faster speeds... towards ontario/riverside gets really ****ty though

I'm not positive that California has fully launched HSPA+. Notice the + at the end, this is what gives you 4G speeds. It should be fully launched in California (major cities) by then end of December.
Also, concerning the H. Your data icon will switch to H if you are on HSPA or HSPA+. This is a part of the Sense UI. ANY sense phone or phone using a sense UI will have this funciton. So that being said, if you see the H for data, it could be fast 3G speeds or 4G. I typically get anywhere from 3.5-7Mbs through out Phoenix which is a fully 4G launched network.

Thanks for the info fellas! Its good to know by the end of the year, our system will be alot faster. To tell you the truth, I am already satisfied with speeds right now.
