[Q] Bluetooth, Stock Music Player and Rom for the DROID X - Droid X General

I have recently bought the Droid X about a week ago. Being that this is
my first Android device, i am quickly learning what works well and
what doesn't work so well. I am an ex-iPhone user and the one thing it does
well is iPod and bluetooth integration. I struggle with this on my
Droid X.
Seems the software isn't up to snuff especially when playing my
podcasts so i use Google Listen for this across the Bluetooth protocol. The problem is that when a phone call comes in I can take it on BT but when I end the call, the stock music player app starts up as well as Google Listen(app that was currently playing). Neither knows who is the boss apparently. A similar thing occurs when starting the vehicle as the stock music player starts but not Google Listen. So I have to stop the music player and then start Google Listen. A royal pain to say the least.
Now the really interesting thing is that the stock music player WILL play my synced podcasts but will always restart the podcast from the
beginning which sucks if you are in the middle of a 2 hour podcast.
Having said all that I know that the bluetooth issues are known with DROID X but what about other solutions. What about alternate Roms? Would this offer any better solutions to problems like these? Why does one load alternate roms? To solve problems, gain new functionality, what?
I have the 2.2 OTA update. Can you update the rom from this state and
more importantly can you get back to stock VZ.
I have done the iphone jailbreaking and nor could always go back to stock OS.
I would appreciate some info on this as I would love to be able to
start resolving some of my issues if possible.
Thanks in advance.

I know that I am going to get blasted 4 this - custom roms are not going to solve any issues. They only create issues. Just read some of the threads. They are fun (to me). But the ones created for the X don't add functionality - they actually loose functionality. No panoramic in the camera. No dnla. Not hdmi out. For most people - who cares about that stuff? But they aren't created to fix blue tooth issues. They are cut down to be light and fast and themed - rooted, deodexed, zip aligned, and optimized. But I haven't seen them resolve any technical issues.
Just my opinion though. I await the thrashing from the rom crackheads. Bring it
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

I agree with thepolishguy. They just add issues...

Thanks for the honest and sincere replies. I may look at rooting when the need arises as I understand there are a couple of popular apps that require this. I may have questions that need to be posted and will do so at that time.
Thanks again.
--Mickey

This is only slightly on topic but I was using GMaps to navigate today and had a call.. turns out my 'navigator narrarator' doesn't know what interrupt means.. does the caller hear the announcement as well? It's one thing if I can vaguely hear her, but when I can't hear the caller at ALL.. it is a bit frustrating. Guess I'll not take calls when I know a turn is coming up..

[Q] Notification halts music playback

So I've searched using "keywords" and scoured through many similar posts on this issue within the forum and through Google with no luck, so I'm posting this request now.
Is there any way to prevent a new message/text notification sound from halting music playback?
I hook up my phone to the car to blast the music but when I get a text, it stops/halts/pauses the song, plays the notify sound, and then resumes playback.
I don't want to turn off the notifications all the way, I just want to have the notify sound play OVER or ON-TOP of the music playback
The phone is still running just the stock rom, but if you guys suggest an app or rooting, then I will do whatever it takes, thanks!
This is part of MOST phones. My phone does it, the G1 does it, my friends BB does it.
thanks fenixnr....so is there nothing that can be done to correct this on an Android device?
I know in the past I've had Windows Mobile devices with the same issue (Xperia X1) and some of the ROMs I flashed on it corrected the issue while others did not. My HD2 doesn't have this problem and it has a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack too.
Am I the only one who has noticed this
I was hoping someone else would have wanted the same thing resolved.

There is nothing to "resolve" as I am pretty sure that is by design how it should work. I cannot test this now, but try putting your phone into a silent mode when listening to your music... Of course, keep your media volume up for your music.
If memory serves me right I think that cm kanged expresso rom had the feature to play notification out of the speaker when headphones were plugged in. Cm6 might have that feature too. I'm not sure though.

honestly if its only a problem when you plug your phone into the car, just put your phone on vibrate or turn the notification off.
Yeah this is honestly the one thing buggin' me right now.
I walk to work it's about a half hour walk to and from and I don't give a damn about my notifications during that time. Hah.

ED12 Thanks and Questions

First and foremost to everybody over at ACS thank you for bringing Gingerbread to my Epic. For the most part I have a fairly bug free, fully functioning installation.
I did want to mention a couple of things:
- I am getting an interruption in charging (I know this was a known bug)
- I have fully functioning GPS (I got a lock in GPS Status right before I did the install, left GPS on, shut the phone down and did the install, when my phone booted up after the install I turned on GPS and got a lock right away!)
- My voicemail won't verify! (I can still receive voicemail, I just don't get the voicemail-to-text to work) Plus, my voicemail icon in the notification bar NEVER goes away! (Hoping there might be a fix for that coming soon)
- ED12 does something absolutely no ROM I have had does... I listen to Pandora in my car with an auxilary cable plugged into the headphone jack. I also have my bluetooth headset paired and connected. In the past, whenever I received a phone call or wanted to make a phone call I had to unplug the auxilary cable in order for the phone to route call audio to my headset... NOT THE CASE ANYMORE!!! In a very awesome twist all call audio automatically routes to the bluetooth! Also, amazing bluetooth compatability with Google voice, Voice Search, etc.
So, all in all, Gingerbread has made me totally happy! I am sorry that I put this in the General forum apparently I am too new to post on Development pages so I understand if this gets moved.
Curious, when do you think we will start seeing ROMs and Bug Fixes for ED12?
Also, I saw that Jez2cool's thread with the tar version, however the link to the file was dead (just came up with a Dropbox error page), will there be a flashable version for me to Odin coming soon? Will that version fix some of the issues I am seeing on the version I have installed through CWM?
Once again to the whole team at ACS thank you!
I will be looking forward to further development!

ED12 - ACS-Leaky Gingerbread
There wont be any bug fixes for ed12. It will just be another rom that samsung will make. Its just a test build. Hopefully we can get another leak when another version comes out. Also the tar and flashable version thru recovery is the same thing.

It's actually so unbelievable that I think Samsung just hasn't overwritten that part of the code yet in attaching their skin to GB...
We probably won't be seeing a TAR to Odin since that file is off-limits until Sprint releases it to the public.

The lock screen date is a universal problem, not just ED12.
its a alot of bugs they dont say about this rom
I'm running gingerbread ED12 stock ROM right now for the first time. My first impressions are "Amazing." This ROM seems like it is the direct port from the Nexus S with TouchWiz on top of it. Everything seems to be working...I know people said they are having a lot of problems, but I haven't seen any too major ones. My battery meter is fine, GPS is working, and the phone isnt crashing.
WiMax doesn't work, which I assumed. And the lockscreen has the date cutoff like every other ROM in May. That's a problem with Samsung's TouchWiz that they need to fix.
EDIT: And again the "Time Without Signal" issue is still here. I wish they would fix that
gingerbread was way cool, but the thing main that stopped me from running it full time was the fact that visual voicemail wasn't working. Couldn't download vm's and wanted me to call the vm service like I was on a dumb phone. Eff that
There were some other minor bugs that I was willing to put up with, like not waking the phone when the keyboard is opened and only having the CRT power off animation but not [/i]on[/i]
Then there are the things that samsung/sprint seem entirely unwilling to fix like the date on lockscreen and whatever it is that causes google sky maps to always point at the southern hemisphere.
still, I was willing to forgive all that for HALF of the badass CRT animation.. it was THAT cool imo, but i just couldn't deal with calling to get voicemails LOL
Just use Google voice dude its better

That's a problem with the Sprint data being uploaded. It seems the 3G uploading is borked as well. You can test it with "SpeedTest.net" app

Driving? Don't Count on Voice-to-Text

Since the update to GB... my voice-to-text has not been working properly in the car. I first thought it might be background noise like the A/C or something but it appears to only happen when the car is moving.
Isn't this the whole point of voice-to-text? To keep you safe while driving so it doesn't require typing. Am I the only one with this problem? Is there any kind of workaround? I depend heavily on this feature. This is a big negative for me.
Same issue here. Voice to text has been broken for me since the first GB update on a stock unrooted EVO.
busted here too.
sucks.
Yes this happens to me too.
Just quit using your phone in the car so i can quit flipping you people off!
Have y'all tried updating voice search from the market? I noticed there was a recent update for it mentioning bug fixes.
Tried updating everything. Full factory restore on Unrooted GB 2.3.3 both the first release and with the maintenance fix. Changed Voice Input and Output settings. Changed the Google account dashboard and personalization. Everything and even rolling back to 2.2 which doesn't work because of the new Hboot.
It is completely broken. You get going 20-25mph+ and the mic does not respond.
Hope that it is address in a future release update (not likely), but will have to root and roll back.
Can any one that is rooted and on the stock 2.3 or different rom confirm if voice search is working for them?

Yeah... I updated Voice Search and I will find out later if it works when I get in my car.
Well, I did the Voice Search update and still can't do voice to text in the car while it's moving. This is ridiculous! I love using HeyTell especially when driving and now it has become useless.
A guy at work asked me today if i knew anything about this problem. He has had this problem since the GB update and his EVO is stock and not rooted. I told him I would look into it. Looks like I found the answer.

I did; however, find out that the voice search does work in the texting mode once you've hit the car in front of you wondering why it wasn't working during the driving process. Once stopped, it is amazing!
EDIT: OK..couldn't resist, but reminds me of the little "Don't use this while your driving" disclaimer in the gps units turning them on.
I've had issues with it when not moving.
I'm not sure where this connection to driving comes into play?

The whole advantage of voice-to-text is so you don't text while driving. My phone sits in a dock in the car. If someone texts me, I can verbally respond without taking my hands off the wheel. You know... kinda like talking on the phone hands-free. That's why voice-to-text is so valuable to me.
Earlier tonight I discovered the problem is worse. I was outside taking a walk and decided to use voice-to-text and nothing. Would not recognize. But once I stopped walking and used it... it was fine. So it's not just limited to driving. They need to fix this problem!
I did some looking around on Google and this issue has been reported on multiple different sites. However, it seems that it's more related to background noise rather than being in a moving vehicle. If there is any amount of background noise, voice to text seems to not work properly. It seems that it works fine if you are in a completely silent environment.

Yeah... I read the same thing but my tests did not ring true. When I was stopped at a light, I put the AC on at full blast and the voice-to-text worked flawlessly. But as soon as I moved and even with the AC off... nothing. For me, there didn't seem to be any connection with background noise... only movement.
My only other suggestion is to try an app called Vlingo for the mean time. The In Car mode is amazing. Just say "hey vlingo" and it starts listening to commands. It really is completely hands free. You never have to touch your phone to send texts and it even reads your message back to you to confirm before sending. I've never had problems with it although the in car mode is still in beta. Good luck!
I just spoke this entire post while driving 45 miles an hour down the road using Google voice search.
I had same issue on stock Rom. I believe if u look at main settings, voice input and output, text to speach settings, and in there it should say something about downloading something. If it needs updating u can press it and market will open with what u need

So I tried going through the text-to-speech settings but no luck. The issue doesn't seem to be with text-to-speech but with voice-to-text. It's like the microphone stops picking up audio when in motion.
Nevertheless... got this today from HTC...

Google REFUSING to help with broken device

So, I'm at my wit's end. I've had multiple chats with highly belligerent Google staffers who, because they don't recognise an error, refuse to help. They also won't let me return my 6P and I'm pretty close to desperation.
Essentially, my 6P just won't play podcasts without the audio continually dropping out (it goes silent, but playback continues). To get audio back, I need to unplug / replug my headphones multiple times, pause / play multiple times / sometimes restart entirely. There's a subtle click whenever this happens. This occurs with podcasts downloaded via PocketCasts and DoggCatcher and books via Audible. It happens regardless of which player I use - even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music.
It doesn't seem to happen with music files but, come on, an mp3's an mp3. My suspicion is that it's happening with long files. Maybe I should try some opera.
Google essentially say that files like podcasts and sources like the BBC aren't supported. It's CRAZY for a flagship like this. They insist the phone is fine without taking a physical look at it. They flat-out refuse to let me exchange it.
So what the hell do I do? Podcasts are, by a large margin, the thing I spend most time using my phone for. Without that very basic functionality, the 6P is next to useless for me.
Do I have to take legal action?
Legal action? I bet your success rate would be close to 0% on that.
Factory reset or reflash the stock images.

I guess it may come to that?! I'm just dumbfounded by their response, which amounts to "you're using it wrong". It's not remotely what I've come to expect from Google and the overall tone is simply hostile and callous. I'm really shocked by it, to tell you the truth.

I troubleshoot software and hardware for a living. You've got to look at it from their perspective:
*no known issues other than yours (my guess - have to check bug tracker
*inability to replicate
*isolated issue
*not HW related
*not SW related (see bulletpoint one)
It's not that they DON'T want to help you, it's just based on the information provided and lack of other users having the same problem, they have nothing to resolve your issue with. Now if other users start reporting the same thing? Software issue that will get flagged on a bug tracker and possibly added as a bug fix in a future update.

Oh, god, I completely understand. But surely, in the interim, they should offer to RMA the device rather than simply saying: "Meh, your problem"? I mean, they're famous for being great to deal with - why this sudden lack of concern?
Inability to replicate surely means getting the questionable device in hand and testing. It's not enough to say that other devices work fine so mine should work fine too.

Which app are you using to play podcasts?
Have you tried another? I use Pocketcasts every day and have no problems whatsoever.
EDIT: Have you also tried a different pair of headphones? Not all headphones work well with the 6P.
Put this thing on reddit and hope for a ****storm.
It sounds to me like what you're experiencing is a compatibility issue, not a phone issue. I don't see how/why they'd replace a handset in that situation.

PocketCasts primarily (which is why I'm sure it's a fault with my hardware - because people like your good self are fine!), but also DoggCatcher. I've also sideloaded the files into Play Music and the problem persists. It also happens with Audible. And, yep, I've tried several pairs of headphones. SIGH.

Bingo! I see this every year with Nexus. Not to say it doesn't happen with other phones, but Nexus seems to attract more AR, paranoid users than any other. I'm not surprised they're trying to minimize exchanges in some cases.
If you haven't done an FDR, I would suggest that you do, and restore nothing. Install Pocketcasts and see if the issue persists.
Or.... Tell them there is a slight bulge over the volume rocker and they will exchange it. It's a "known issue" I was told by Google this very thing. And was told I could exchange if I wanted.
I had a similar thing happen on my @voice reader app and was able to correct it by setting the "between paragraph" delay to 0 ms from the standard 300 ms. Something about the way Marshmallow handled that slight break in audio focus caused it drop from bluetooth and speaker playback. I don't know if your podcast apps have the ability to speed up playback, but it might be worth a shot.
I had the same issue with pocketcasts. The only fix was a reboot. I haven't tried to listen to them on 6.0.1 yet. But I've only had that issue twice. Reboot helped.

Yeah, it's pretty constant for me. I'm trying yet another pod catcher to see if that helps. I'll report back if it does. But I'm SURE it's nothing to do with the apps. Like I say, even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music, the problem persists.
Anyone know whether a bulge at the bottom is RMA-able even after the 14 days (I was one of the meh-okay-nothing's-perfect people)? I guess I could say it's developed recently??
I have a similar issue listening to Tune In radio whether live, or a recorded show. I have chalked it up to my headphones cause they're pretty Sh!tty and on their last leg. Audio keeps counting down but no sound. Unplug, replug, hit play and I am on my way again.
Are you sure it is not the headphones, have you tried with a bluetooth speaker or headset?
It will work. The bulge thing. I have screen shots of the conversation with Google telling me it's nothing to worry about and if it got worse it would be covered and I would get a new device. Can't post pics yet, my account won't let me.
Yep, definitely not the headphones. I've tried three pairs now. Thanks, though!

6.0.1 Bluetooth issue fix?

Hey guys,
this new android related issue where streaming music via bluetooth is a pain in the ass, as there are only two volume levels (absolutely loud and the opposite) is really annoying.
Is there any statement from google, if and when it'll be fixed or is there even a fix already?
I cannot imagine how sth like this got into a final release...
Stream every single day on a 45 minute commute via GPM and Spotify (Bluetooth to car) and never encountered this... Seems odd. I'll keep an eye out but haven't seen it yet!

is a common issue with 6.0.1 and several bluetooth devices (i have a creative roar box), just search the forums here.
I'm usually ok with blue tooth streaming to my car as well as to my Polaris speaker. No issue with my Huawei watch either that I'm aware of.

But I listen to podcasts daily (while biking/running./in the car) and it keeps cutting out on me.. like 2-3 times/minute.. that's using the bluetooth in-car, as well as two different bluetooth headsets

Edit - seems worse when I'm near my wifi router; although still having issues w/ wifi off..
I had some issues with bluetooth audio cutting out after the phone had been sitting for a while. I added the media apps (music, youtube) to the not optimized list under battery settings and now it works fine.

No joy. I did your suggestion in conjunction with a few others and I'm still getting audio hits. Did the following to no avail:
- Uninstalled an app called "gasbuddy" which has been reportedly giving users issues with BT
- Messed with a few settings in Developer Options

Did those listed above plus your suggestion and it still doesn't work properly. The only thing that is (albeit moderately) reliable is to completely unpair, forget device, repair, and update permissions. How frustrating every time I get in the car. Additionally, I've been getting SERIOUS BT phone problems. The caller on the line cannot hear me nearly at all. It's not my car's BT unit either, as I've troubleshooted with other phones. I have to switch to handset speakerphone. I feel like I'm in the 90s again. I'm massively bummed out since I spend a lengthy portion of time in my morning/evening commutes. BT is the one thing I can't do without. What a drag.

Does it work with other Bluetooth devices, or do you have other phones to test in your car? Might be an issue with the car or even something google/hauwei can fix under warranty.

Thanks for the reply but yeah that's what I meant when I said - "as I've troubleshooted with other phones."...
As to your other point, this is actually my second 6p. I RMA'd one a few weeks back for the same issue - I thought the same thing.
So frustrating. Like nailing jell-o to the wall.
I found what was causing my Bluetooth issues with my Chevy Malibu. The app weather bug was messing with my phone Bluetooth and battery drain. After I deleted the app my Bluetooth works fine and my phone now sleeps with doze correctly...

I was having the same issue, both with BT headphones, BT speaker, and my Android Wear watch. I tried factory resets on both phone and watch, and forgetting all BT connections and re-pairing to no avail. I Factory reset my phone again, and didn't add my Amber Weather Widget back to my home screen and all was well. As soon as I added it...Bt went to hell again. Deleted the app and now I'm having no problems. Not sure why a weather app would cause BT to act up, but it sure did in my case.
Uuuh. This is ultra frustrating. Using my smartphone for business and private stuff, so it has to re reliable. Hearing music is a pain in the ass, really. Doesn´t matter if I connect it to my Bose Soundlink Mini, my Philips NFC/Bluetooth Dongle...interruptions all over the place.
BTW: I don´t have any weather widget installed, so I have absolutely no clue what to try next. Delete all paired devices is a no go, really.
PS: And it´s not only interruptions - music kind of gains speed after those interruptions.

No joy. I did your suggestion in conjunction with a few others and I'm still getting audio hits. Did the following to no avail:
- Uninstalled an app called "gasbuddy" which has been reportedly giving users issues with BT
- Messed with a few settings in Developer Options
- Cleared Cache

Yep,I have the same exact issue with phone calls, the caller cannot hear me at all and I switch to speaker. This is my second phone and they both did the same thing, connects, fine for a few seconds, then gets muted or something and have to switch to speaker. My notes never did this and it's super making me mad! I'm going to call google and try to return this phone. It's BT totally broken.
I might be giving up on the phone very soon. I'm bummed. I really dig it, but BT is such a HUGE part of my life at this point that it's impossible for me to own a phone that falters in that respect. Ugh. How disappointing.
I even signed up for the new Android N beta testing, hoping that would remedy the situation. Nope.
