OK, I am NOT a dev. I have no idea how to code for Android. I am astounded at the amazing work many people do on here. This is simply a thread for me to gain some knowledge. I know people have made 2.1 ROMs, so obviously the drivers necessary to make ROMs are all available. Also, I know that 2.2 is on the AOSP, and has been for awhile. So what I don't understand, as a result of my ignorance, is what is holding up the fine community here from making a good clean port of stock 2.2 for the Fascinate. I am sure this is an easy question to answer and anyone that can clue me in, I would greatly appreciate it. What do we need to happen for the real fun to begin with ROM creation for the Fascinate? Thanks!
Short answer is the current kernel we have does not support 2.2, only 2.1. Since samsung hasn't released source code for a 2.2 Kernel for fascinate the dev's can't build one. the closest thing we have is the galaxy K source code, which is the exact same hardware as the fascinate except from korea. Unfortuatly that kernel doesn't support RFS (samsung's proprietary file system) so it won't boot anything on our phones, which use RFS for all of the internal data partitions. So untill we have access to a kernel that does support froyo, no froyo roms will boot.
there are other issues, but I believe that is the main reason no one is seriously working on a 2.2 rom, because even if they built one, there's no way to test it without a kernel. hope this explained a little.
Just because the source code is on aosp doesn't mean we can just build a rom and bam, working froyo. No galaxy s devices have a working aosp built rom yet, and we are working on it. The kernel is only part of the problem, getting the aosp apps to work instead of the Samsung apparently is proving to be a little tricky.

We can build Froyo on this kernel...the Eris does. I think the devs want the 2.2 source so they don't have to fight an uphill battle like all the Eris devs did, haha.

I Looked at the other SGS Phones and i think all of them have froyo roms and kernals, Im not try to be rude to the devs, thank you for all your excellent work, but why can't they build or port a 2.2 kernal.

My take on it: We have a few very talented devs that we are very fortunate to have working on the Fascinate. They are very capable of producing Froyo roms and kernals given enough time. The thing is, it's very time consuming and this isn't the only thing they have going in their lives. They have work or school, wives or girlfriends, some have children. Their time for developing is limited. So they work on whats practical. Froyo development isn't all that practical because Froyo will be released by Samsung well before they could realistically complete the task. Once Froyo is released by Samsung, they can take the source and unf*&# what Samsung and Verizon f%*& up. Thank you JT, Birdman, Dirrk, Deodexed, and all the other devs who make my phone better.

PunkKaos already confirmed he got KaosFroyo to boot on his Fascinate before it went up in smoke. He said it wasn't due to the ROM either, just a bad phone.
He hasn't been able to get another one yet, so until then, we won't see it released.

+1 Googleplex.
Like I said before, devs for the Eris (and CDMA Hero, etc.) used the kernel version used for 2.1 to develop Froyo for those phones, but the development process was rife with bugs and incomplete features for MONTHS. Starting now and fighting an uphill battle with compiling, and drivers, and everything else doesn't make sense when we are getting 2.2 source in just under a month, now.

because when you're nearly the only one working on something extremely complex and you also have a REAL life, it's not as easy as you might want it to be. rom development doesn't pay the bills.

What phone has an operating system that is good "enough" out of the box. Besides, what fun is that?
sheesh people, can't believe you're talking like that with jesus around
I see a disabled account in someones future. Anywho it seems people have this notion that 2.2 is gonna make this thing come alive when in fact it already is alive. Or is it penned up anger that they bought car/desk docks without having full audio functions.
good day.
Jt. Cast ur android spells on these guys. As far as this thread goes I forgot what we were talking about.

I know there's a bunch of these threads across XDA (and please don't slam me for opening a new one) but I wanted to add one more. I think this one will be a little different though, so hang tight...
First and foremost, I wanted to thank everyone at TeamWin for making my EVO into a SuperEVO. CM6 and CM7 are the two best things that have ever happened to my EVO and my mother's CDMA HTC Hero.
I read on Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5804345/modders-make-android-work-the-way-you-want, great article BTW) that CyanogenMOD is running on an estimated 500,000 devices of 32 different flavors. I've only experienced it on the Hero and the EVO. On my mother's Hero, installing CM6/7 unlocked Sprint 3G access that wasn't enabled while running stock. I thought that was mighty impressive, but for TeamWin, I figure that's just another day at the office. TeamWin is also responsible for the official WiMAX code that AOSP Gingerbread is running. THAT is impressive, considering they had to write the code from scratch, but for TeamWin, I figure that's just another day at the office.
What else has everybody seen TeamWin accomplish across the great variety of devices they maintain? I've seen miracles with the Hero and the EVO, I just was kind of curious. This could also be a way for us all to show appreciation to the guys, if y'all want anyway.
THANKS TEAMWIN!!! Y'ALL ARE SUPA SUPA SUPAFLY!!!
Oh, I've also seen an unofficial nightly running on a MetroPCS Hauwei Ascend, which made that phone run suhweeeeeet.

I just want to clarify that cm6 and cm7 are not made by teamwin. As much as I love teamwin the credit goes to Cyanogen aka Steve Kondik, and team douche(CyanogenMod team). Also thank everyone who has submitted code to gerrit.
Team win has brought us awesome additions like HDMI, wimax, and kernel manager. Their hard work has truely helped make aosp fully functional.

Oh, sorry. Team Douche. That's my bad.
I know I havent been particularly active in this subforum lately because there wasnt much to update on the touchwiz front
but anyway, just wanted to say goodbye to those that are left...my parents took the leap into smartphones recently and i gave them my fascinate and og inc to use (so i can snag their upgrades when needed)
so while i had promised that on the small chance another ota dropped for verizon id update resurrection and superclean...that small chance just went to 0 w/o a phone to work with
the fascinate was the first android phone i had that i actually did anything for...starting with porting themes back in the fall of 2010 alongside retrokidd, thatdudebutch, et all...before eventually moving on to roms and mods
most of the people in the android world im friends with were because of this phone, so i look back on this time fondly and hope to see most of you around in the future when our paths cross on other phones (sgs3?)
thanks for everything! you've been a great help and a great dev.

You are definitely a beast man. Thanks for everything!

Good luck and thanks for everything. Looking forward to more of your work, hopefully Verizon will get the S III and let the tweaking begin !

You breath life into the fascinate when verizon/samsung left it in the dark with updates. I was in froyo months before it was release by v, I was on gingerbread again months before v put it out, all thanks to you.
To your credit also, I have tried everything, from miui to cm7 and the lastest aokp and asop roms. I keep coming back to your tsm 2 rom, it is a jewel of stabilty and functionality.
thanks for your hard work, and the countless hours of coding. I will see you in a better place, called samsung fascinate 3.
We can't thank you enough. Your legacy lives on. As long as Fascinates continue to function, you will have fans and followers.
Thanks for everything bro. I've seen your posts all over the place and they are always helpful.
Sincere thanks and appreciation for all you've done. I hope our paths cross again.
Thanks man.. My upgrade has been up since October but I'm holding out for SG3 and I'm hoping it's gonna drop soon in the next month or two..
To be honest, the Fascinate turned out to be a great phone once most of the kinks were worked out, with much of that credit going to all the developers working on giving functioning ROMs..
I'm in no rush to leave just yet, haven't been brave enough to flash to AOKP ICS..
So in ending, I'm not saying goodbye, more like see you soon in another forum banging out some cool themes and ROMs for our future phones!

Thanks for everything nitsuj17. There was a while there where it looked like we'd be faced with a decision between Froyo GB ROMS or going with one of the AOSP offerings. While I liked what they had to offer (and great things continue to be worked on) I found myself wishing for some of the things I missed from TW (such as the camera app and media players) and just plain stability.
You came through with exactly what I wanted. Previous to now my favorite time on the Fascinate was with SC2 and now with SC3 I really don't feel I need to change a thing. On one hand I'm sad that I won't be tinkering around as much (because everything just works and works very well), but on the other I have a pretty sweet device (what turned out to be one thanks to yours and other's work). I think if the Fascinate dropped with this software it would not be the butt of jokes re: Bing and the GPS issues.
I think when it comes time to upgrade (soon ...) a big deciding factor will be where you and people like sbrissen end up. Cheers!
*PS If your parents have an issue do you make them submit a logcat? j/k
What are you using till you upgrade? Inc2?
Thank you for giving us great ROMs to make our phones run the way they should've in the first place. Your comments were always right on. Thanks for your work on TSM and SuperClean!

Why dont all the devs team up, all kernel devs team up and make one great rom with all the features? And all kernel devs make one big performance and battery saving kernel?

Exactly! Sounds fine at first, but ultimately a bad idea.
Plus, Android is about choice. There's a reason for the so-called "fragmentation".
Can we comment if we disagree? Competition is what pushes people to do things they normally wouldn't do. Competition is what drives people to improve.
Besides, since this is all open source, are they already kind of working together?
I could never imagine all the devs working together on a SINGLE rom or kernel. I just don't think it would work.
Besides you already have teams such as cm, asop, kangs, oxygen and acs. These teams are already pretty large as it is. If you were to put them all together nothing would get done as they would eventually just fracture and separate.
Nice thought but a bit unrealistic.
Edit: We all like different things about each of the different roms and kernels. What you may love, I may hate. This is the beauty of Android and open source. There are many flavors and choices. If there was one huge mother ship all making the same thing it would be Apple.

Features and performance do not go hand in hand. One or the other.
CM does not aim for one or the other, just a balance of the two.
Other ROM makers have different views.
Apple has one view.
Disagree
Sheesh, I must be the only one who agrees. Seeing a community uniting to collaborate on an OS together.. A huge number of people sharing ideas and knowledge while inspiring others to improve their own development skills. Making ideas come to life when they are just out of your knowledge of java and c because a more experienced developer lends a hand where your lacking. You mean embracing the spirit of Linux and making people like Linus proud . Nah we rather do kangs and dream of what little code we can layer on top for exclusivity....smh....

I agree and disagree..
Most of the time, I like to work alone. I'm super independent and have a way I like to do everything. When I work with people I become less interested and don't work as hard... but...
I don't know everything about android, and there are tons of devs that know far more than I ever will, so in a situation where I'm stuck on something, working with multiple devs would be the best way to go.
It's nice having variety, although it would be nice to see a huge collaboration on an insane 2.0ghz kernel accompanying the fastest-sexiest-kangiest rom ever.
We already have a rom that has all the features crammed into one package. So really the collaboration has inadvertently already been compiled.
†††
I think its a good idea. However it is not at all easy and would not be practical. It will be very difficult to manage as well. That's why we have cyanogenmod and aokp. As well as miui.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
I agree! If they just could make one single build that is free from bugs, fast and stable! Don't have to be more then one ;-) Beacuse they do a super rom/kernel doesn't mean that they should stop develope their own rom/kernel
peace

Well we all know who the left wingers are now. Competition drives excellence end of story. If they wanna collaborate then whatever but I'm telling you one rom/kernel combo would be a disaster.

I've had my fascinate for about a year and 1/2 now and the only reason I've loved it is because of the great devs we've had over the years. I'm talking about you jt1134, stephen, adrynalyne, weblexa, and of course nitsuj17. You all have truly made my experience a fascinating one. Sorry if I've forgotten anyone from the many builds I've used but I really appreciate all of you.
I just per-ordered the galaxy S3 so that I can maintain my unlimited data on a 4G phone so I will be saying goodbye to the fascinate community.
