Dam Edge is hella slow! - Vibrant General

Well went over the 5gb cap by just using the web and streaming Pandora and Slacker! So they slowed me down to Edge speed and dam its so slow that it wont stream music or even load Youtube Videos. Only pulling in 0.06k speed using the Speednet test. Why so dam slow?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

That sucks, even when my phone used edge it obviously wasn't as fast as 3g but i still could surf the web and use pandora with no problem just a few seconds longer of a wait.

Yea so slow and its pissing me off. Wont load crap. Plus my rooted vibrant has been hella laggy too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Not to be a douche, but to reach 5GBs with just streaming music, you would have to stream close to 100 hours. Did you really use that much?

I haven't gone over the 5GB cap since they instituted it, but I cut it close this past month. I tether very lightly, but I do download roms direct to my phone because a lot of the hosting sites are blocked at work. I also spend about 2 hours on the train round trip and usually stream music, surf the web, etc. I wish they'd just offer a higher cap plan with no throttling. I'd rather pay a few bucks more with the peace of mind that I won't be throttled to 56k modem speeds.

I feel selfish and dirty saying this but in the back of my mind I personally love T-mobile doing this!
The people that tether/stream like crazy (slowing everyone else down) and hide behind contract terms of "unlimited" should be held accountable. A friend of mine showed me how he had use 93gb's last month and I was like "WTF are you doing man?! your slowing me down as well!!!"
Go T-mobile slowdowns Go!

There is a high low option in Pandora. Same goes for YouTube, it will default to low when not on wifi. But yea to be going past 5GB, you got to be doing some crazy things. We are all used to counting minutes(at least those who dont spring for the unlimited plan), so we can do the same with data, but yes it would be nice to be able to pay for the premium. Get the app 3G watchdog, it will track 3g data usage. It allows you to set the start off point, so just check your account at tmo, and put in the current usage and it will continue from there instead of zero.

I've been surviving on Edge since the old days. Cracks me up watching others complain about Edge when they leave the battery sucking 3G on all day. Maybe thats why I have tons of battery life since I idle on Edge all day and fire up 3G and WiFi when I really need it.
Why stream music constantly when you can load up tons of music in the internal memory or SD card?
For the record Edge is not 56k modem speed.
Edge normally runs 70-135kbps with bursts to 200kbps.

maybe i'm retarded but where the hell do you find data usage? i've NEVER been able to find it
edit:
finally found it, had to drill down into my specific line.

When you go over 5 gigs, they cripple your down speed to a fraction of that of edge. What you are experiencing makes edge feel like 10G.

Yea I really used 5gb just using the web and streaming videos and music! downloaded 2 movies from the mediahub! Yea sucks balls!

on a serious note, do what I did. I got a 16gb sd card for music and just download mixtapes with a torrent app over night with wifi. I use a app called swarm and just load up a couple of torrents while your sleep. Use your data for youtube.
If your interested in hiphop and r and b try these.
mixtapetorrent.com or for mediafire mixtape downloads try hiphopthugz.com or datpiff.com
As far as I know these are legit websites for free mixtapes. Sorry in advance if these are against the rules.

Already got like 5gigs of music. But still like using Pandora Radio! Thanks

Personally, for me, when my phone is running under Edge, it is the equivalent of having NO INTERNET. A majority of the time Edge is so slow, that web pages fail to load. I could leave my phone on, and a site would take several mins to barely load.
In my opinion this is a non-functional data plan at that point. I understand unlimited internet technically isn't unlimited 3G, however, I do believe that someone can make a strong case in court, that when speeds are throttled down to Edge, the internet functionality is rendered useless, and thus could be classified as being "LIMITED" internet.
It's like getting an unlimited voice plan, and talking all day long. Then the phone company says "oh well you talk too much, so I'm going to cut down on your voice transmission so you can only hear bits and pieces of your conversation." Essentially the phone call would be useless right?
I think if someone is smart, this is the angle they will play in court. Fine T-mobile, if you want to advertise as "unlimited" then at least the phone should still be able to functionally access websites when you decide to throttle abusers.
Personally I've never hit the 5 or 10gb cap, but I know how it sucks to run Edge. Edge=NO DATA

T-Mobile 3g

Im sure most peeps know this but tmobile does in if fact throttle your 3g service if you go over 10mb here is the text I got today.

it's 10gb not 10mb. and that's a reasonable limit before throttling. there are other threads on this as well.
Does this count for downloading 10mb apps and stuff? I have not been throttled down and thought this was only a myth...10gb is a lot to go through a month for me anyway though

this has been discussed thoroughly in other threads....
but, basically, you are still receiving the product (unlimited web access, which is the same cost even if there isn't 3g in your area), just at a slower speed. a lot of cable and dsl companies do the same thing and their networks aren't as impacted by heavy bandwidth usage.
The dumb part is 10gig's isn't much anymore, some apps/games download 80-100 megs worth of stuff.
Not only that but last I checked the Samsung Vibrant comes with mobile TV app does it not?
So whats the point of having apps that are going to eat up data, are only good when they have 3g and we only have 10gigs or use or that?
It makes me sick every time I see ATT's dumb as use our internet commercial and don't state it's a 250 meg and 2.5 gig plans.
Tmobile isn't very far from being in the same boat because they give you a phone with mobitv and advertise the screen and playing movies and then expect you to not use it (and the data cell line to it) to stream videos/movies/shows?
Same thing for Win7, etc..
ALL these phones now are capable of pulling 100's of gigs of data in a month, yet they want us to accept a neutered phone with only 10 gigs of worthy access at descent speeds.
And no edge isn't worthy, might as well not have a data connection for anything other than checking email or getting tweets because it's way to slow.
So either go back to selling just dumb phones, or they need to expect people to be using more data.
I just don't see the point in living in this internet data based world and having all these damn cell phone companies refuse to allow us to enjoy it by not offering a true unlimited internet 3g connection to our phones.
And it's not the data pipe, or the usage thats a bull**** argument because the following companies offer unlimited internet through cell towers for laptops/home computers verizon/virgin mobile/sprint and sprint offers unlimited 3g to their 4g phones.
So no it's not about them "coping" with us the evil eaters of all the bandwith. If that was the case nobody, not one company could offer true unlimited 3g/4g but it is out there just not for the vast majority of the companies/options and you have zero options if you are GSM only like me which sucks.
I think 10gb is very far considering at&t gives you 2gb for 25 and then charges you more if you go over that

Yes and I could offer to chop off only a pinky instead of your whole hand so thats better as well right?
Don't think so, if the cell companies want to make use of the airwaves that are limited, they should be forced to offer a unlimited internet package on all their services.
Same for home phone companies, if they want to offer phone service they need to offer dsl to all their customers, and have a unlimited package.
It's just tiring to see commercial after commercial showing this and that on the internet and you have to go to virgin mobile to be able to get unlimited 3g for a home connection. And they only charge me 10 bucks more than the cost for the internet on my phone.
So no I don't think it's to unreasonable to ask for unlimited 3g on my vibrant when you consider I pay about 80 bucks a month, and I use about less than 1 hour of talk time, only a few hundred text so the only real thing they are providing me in quantity for 80 bucks is internet and they can't even do that "right".
Honestly it hardly effects me because I don't have 3g where I live, but I do travel to 3g areas so I don't want to have that slow down.
I got a message telling me my connection was throttled as well. Problem is I haven't been using my phone. I checked my usage on the t-mobile website and it claimed my phone used a gigabyte while I was sleeping. At various points my phone seems to do a few hundred megabytes at random. This has been happening the last few days, which corresponds to the time that the gmail application stopped syncing on my phone. Is this a common problem?
Virgin Mobile/Sprint is giving unlimited 3G away for a few reasons
- Subscriber additions
- Underused EV-DO network (soon to be overloaded with unlimited usage+Evo/Epic; it's already happening) There isn't enough bandwidth to go around. Two people streaming YouTube constantly is enough to bring your overall data through put below 1Mbps where it was probably 2Mbps before.
- Subscriber additions, Sprint is hurting for them.
Very well spoken thats been my whole point to start with

My data speeds have gotten slower and slower over the past couple of months. I cant even stream a youtube video without it buffering to hell. WTF SPRINT! I know I cant be getting throttled hell my billing cycle just started.
My speeds go up and down.. Some days thier fast and smooth and some days their just slow and laggy. I dont get it...
Yeah I have the same slowdown for my data speed as well. First I thought it was just me and all my flashing addiction but after seeing this glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.
I noticed this over the last week.

Have you paid attention to what time of day data speed slows down? Could be just the network being overloaded in your area. For example I start work at 7am and if I run a SpeedTest during 6:50a-8ish I am in the 700-800kb range in my office. If I run the same test after 10a I see anywhere from 200-500kbs. The worst is near lunch hour and after 3pm....damn kids! lol

This is what happens when carriers keep adding subscribers, but are unable to keep their backhaul data pipes expanding. They need subscribers in order to build infrastructure, so we the consumer suffer in the meantime.

I also have to imagine that Android being Sprint's biggest smart OS doesn't help. WinMo/BB just kind of idles when it.. idles. Android on the other hand is built to have constant background data updating, now add a bunch of both old and new subscribers who don't know better and leave the short default polling of their thousand and one apps, and you got a scaling problem.
Its quite annoying. Forget trying to stream anything its pointless lol. There was a point where I could watch netflix with no buffer, now it takes it like 20 minutes just to get to the point where itll actually play. I dont even use it much anymore because as soon as it finally plays the buffer will kick right back in. DAMN I really dont want to have to get this AT&T DSL garbage.
Same issue with me in Wisconsin.
Had 2 friends standing next to me, 1 Verizon 1 AT&T...They both passed the 2mb mark while I chugged along at 350ish k
I used to get awesome service outside Milwaukee but now it seems like complete crap
I called sprint today about the slow data issue, I'm in green bay wi. She told Mr that a lot of people on Wisconsin have been complaining about slow data speeds. I noticed my 3g going to crap over the past month because I stream Pandora all day. Plus just looking at the bars I could tell the signal was not as good (I haven't run any speed tests).
Discovered today however that my 4g now rocks! I'll be using 4g as often as possible now. I didn't notice a big difference in battery drain because while 3g struggled, 4g flew, so I think that evened out.
This is my subjective opinion of course.

Same here, I work in downtown Phoenix and it's POINTLESS trying to stream anything over 64k quality after 2pm. I thought it was Pandora sucking, so I switched to shoutcast on Xiialive, same thing. In the morning it's fine for the most part, but once all the kids get home from school the entire network goes to crap. I don't care about 4g, I just want decent 3g... oh yeah, my speeds are .6mbs in the evening and at the slowest i'm pushing .09mbs per speedtest.net app.

AT&T to throttle unlimited data users soon *news*

just stumbled across this, we may have to watch our tethering habits fella's
http://thecasualgeek.tumblr.com/post/8241532886/at-t-to-begin-throttling-unlimited-data-users
Sounds good to me, the top 5% heaviest users probably account for 30%-40% of data used across the entire mobile network in a month.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I can see it being an issue when people use a tethered phone as their primary internet service. I never go over the 2gb limit and I have unlimited.

Welcome to Canada...
I use 2gig on average and I can't say I tether. Always on the market, netflix, Pandora etc. I also use QIK with my wife and kids. Wish they could make a Facetime app so I can call their Iphones though. Tango is aweful lately but QIK is pretty good.
Thats exactly wat tmobile does

So basically the people who AT&T considers "abusing" their wireless network will be affected only. Not a big deal to me. Seems to me AT&T just needs to add more hotspots and problem solved.
"Typically what puts someone in the top 5 percent is streaming very large amounts of video and music daily over the wireless network, not Wi-Fi. "
Here's a better idea. Remove all the iPhone ****** users and problem solved.
IPhone users automatically equal tier plan death to carriers. It's truly game over whenever Sprint gets the iPhone...

I'd rather have throttled unlimited data vs a 2gb cap with possible overage charges.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have yet to go over 2gig in a month anyway, I added tethering for my tablet which bumped it to 4gig at $45, still haven't went over 4. I don't mind paying even though I can tether free, since they are going to charge me $10 bucks for each gig over anyway. wish we would get 4G speeds where i live tho
The issue is how do they calculate the "heaviest users"?
Possibilities.
Assumption: throttling starts at 5gb
1. If i have unlimited plan and use about 6gb.
2. If i have a tethering plan and i use 6gb.
Scenario #1, i am ok with. 6gb using just a phone is a hell of a lot. i have hit 4gb once and that was when i left wifi off all month.
Scenario #2 would piss me off. Part of getting the tethering plan is because you will be using large amounts of data. In essence they are saying, we dont care. I bet ther only users that will be affected are the people who tether, and that is utte bull****.
Either way, we dont know when the throttling starts because AT&T doesnt release data usage stats.
Well this sucks for me. I do 10+GB a month. My record was in the mid 40s. I do a lot of tethering. And a lot of P2P with that tethering.

I would like to know the logic to this. We have both and it's the Androids that seem to leach the most data. My wife was never over 200mb with her iPhone or Surround, but she's had 2 Inspires (warrantied once for this reason). They leached data straight out of the box. Her Inspire averages 900mb.
She is almost always home on wifi, and our house is an Edge-only area.
The iPhone doesn't do anything more to a network than the Androids. It only got the label of network killer because it was the first truly powerful smartphone they released. It was also so much of a hit, it pulled in dumb phone users who never thought of getting a smartphone.
The current line of Androids are just as fast, and faster, than the iPhone4. They stream HD video, and are uncorked from the box. I cant even download a podcast if it's over 20mb while on my i4.

Both AT&T and Verizon have complained about network overload issues after taking on the iPhone. They like the money that the phone brings in, but then cry poor that their networks are suffering.
Verizon was doing just fine with their Android lineup.
They thought they could handle the iPhone and show up AT&T with their network. Now they are just known as victim #2.
Sprint is now the new favorite on different message boards. Guarantee if they take on the iPhone, it will be tiered data death for them too.

I don't like this at all. I tether on very rare occasions. But I have a 2 hour bus commute and half hour bike ride to and from work 5 days a week. During that time I am almost always streaming video or music, whether it be from hulu, Netflix, Pandora, Google Music etc...
My billing cycle ends on the 3rd. I just checked what my usage for July has been. In July I had a week off from work. Even with that week off and using wifi every minute I'm at home im still at 6.8gb. This worries me. I'm not abusing the data service, I'm just using it in my daily routine. I don't know if that amount of data could potentially throttle me but it would sure suck if I if it did.

I still have my Unltd Data from way back 09, so this sort of blows for me, but AT&T has a business to run, I guess.
Nice corporate guru responses. The "top 5%" is gonna be anyone over 2gb, since that amount was put in place by the company as 95% of AT&T's customers using less than that. At least other carriers throttle to new unlimited plans, at&t doesn't even offer this anymore. All they are doing is rewarding dumb people who think a smartphone makes them smarter while curbing technological advances in streaming music and video.

I wonder if I'll be affected by this.. I don't tether at all and sometimes i hit 20gb. I'm on netflix often, play my pocket legends, vendetta online and download some movies/anime. I have unlimited data.
Im probably going to leave at&t for sprint sometime next year. I never go over 2gb a month and I couldn't imagine how slow my connection would be if they started throttling my data usage. I live in Destin FL and I have seen no improvements going from an aria to an atrix network speed wise. The other day I was at work and a guy there constantly ridicules me for paying nearly $200 a month when he pays 45 on boost.. my argument was the network speed... so we downloaded some large images. Streamed some videos from youtube and on every occasion his samsung galaxy prevail would download nearly twice as fast on boosts 3g vs my atrix's "4g" ... and he has unlimited everything. Yet still my atrix speedtests are better than our work phones which are on verizon's 3g.
I think, as at&t customers especially ones that are loyal to them pay entirely too much money for sub par network performance .. the only thing they have going for them is being able to browse and use voice on the network..

Is sprint purposely slow?

After watching this video I'm starting to wonder if sprint is intentionally slow.

I've been less than a mile from a tower and have my connection suck. In a open air environment to.

I can't watch that video rgt now cuz I'm on VZW 1x lolol
What is it?
And sprint has been slow on 3g since the evo came out
Before that, sprint was worthy of its name

"Sprint - to run at full speed"
How ironic lol

If verizon wasn't so damn expensive I would go there. I think sprint good prices and plan is the reason they won't up the speed of there network. Its not like sprint don't have the technology to do so.

My speeds depend on which tower I'm connected to. The one on the main road has good signal but crappy speeds, and the tower at work is 1-2 bars but steady 2 mbps. I also work in the boonies and there are probably only 5 people connected to it.

You could argue that all carriers are slow. It depends on the tower, prl, and etc, as well as how much you tweak your phone's radio-dependent files, but ruling out those factors, it truly does matter on your data plan. Most, if not all carriers cap your speeds when you're on unlimited plans, those who are on data limits are the ones who truly get no cap, although it doesn't matter because they have a limit, so its as if they're capped anyway.

Sprint claims they don't cap under any circumstances. I think the problem is that Sprint simply doesn't know how to maintain their network well enough to keep up with the demand.
I've whined about this endlessly but I'll give a little example of what I'm talking about. My wife and I drove back to our apartment in the city from upstate NY this morning. We had Spotify going the entire time and at no point did we have any skips or gaps in songs during playback. As soon as we got in our neighborhood, however, the song we were listening to cut began getting choppy before eventually cutting out completely. In the time it took us to find a parking spot - about 5 or so minutes - the song cut out for about 4:50 before coming back with a choppy signal. Sprint has told me a few dozen times that there's a problem with a tower in this neighborhood that somehow never gets fixed. Let's face it, if Sprint can't get their network working reliably in NYC, what does that say about their competence?
The problem is Sprint hasn't invested in their network or backhaul since they came out with data plans back in 2003-2004.

This exactly.
Now they are, unfortunately for us it's going to take a little to see the results.
The mere insinuation that Sprint would be slow [in some areas as slow at 50k] on purpose is...well... I'll be nice and say it isn't smart.
I think sprint is playing smart by saying unlimited data for ad but actually they can only serve very slow speeds everybody.
this in turn make me use less data because I rely on my wifi. A win win situation for the sprint but not for customers.

not sure if this is there intention per se but there's certainly some truth to it. I've got friends who have AT&T iPhones and they routinely go over 5 gigs of data in a month with streaming and whatnot. I've never cracked 600 megs with my Epic because the data speeds are too slow - why would I try to download several gigabytes of data when my downstream tops out a .30 Mbps? when I can get on 4G it's great but it usually knocks me off intermittently until I just give up and switch back to 3G.
I'm just waiting for tons of new iPhone users come in and swarm the Sprint severs and experience the true unlimited data with 10~500kbps speed.
I hope they form and do some kind of class action lawsuit so I can pitch in.
From a user who gets consistent 10~30 kbps in downtown.

I saw ~20 people in the Sprint store this weekend just for the Iphone.
So i guess it not just my crapy little town
If they tried to give full speed to everyone, we would all be taxing the bandwidth, creating a data traffic jam - no data for anyone. (this isn't necessarily an accurate description, I can't claim to know all - but the concept is sound)
The bandwidth is inherently shared, so they have to make sure that everyone gets enough to consider it more than useless.
There is no such thing as truly unlimited bandwidth... Anyone remember when cable internet first came out? It was fast as hell, until prices came down and a few of my neighbors got on board

Good idea - sue them for all they're worth. Then they go bankrupt, and we're all left with Verizon, AT&T or T mobile (or crappy prepaid, which typically piggy backs on the major carrier's networks...)

sigh.. is there no other alternatives then Sprint?
I know Sprint is cheap, but this slowness is too much.
What's the point of unlimited data when I just rely on my wifi.
In this rate, I can take 200mb option from ATT. Because I cant use that much in sprint.

Get a T-Mobile vibrant then unlock it and put in an att sim card. Tell att you want the $15 unlimited data plan for quick messaging phones and give them your imei. If they ask what your phone is tell them it's just an old samsung tmobile phone and mention nothing about android or the real name of the phone, Enjoy.

I'm sure everything you are saying is true. The problem is that Sprint claims they don't limit bandwidth or throttle at all. And it's the line of bulls--t from Sprint that angers me more than their pathetically slow service. That they can't just come forward and speak the truth rather than trying to lure customers in with false promises is a deceptive business practice.
It should be class action for all not just iPhone ppl on sprint.

T-Mobile USA Edge

I was wondering how fast edge is on T-Mobile USA?
Is it okey for email/facebook and some communicator like Palringo?
I don't do any sort of video streaming and only slight internet browsing
I'm just asking because I really would like to buy Nokia 900 or one of the new Sony Ericsson that were just announced. When they will be eventually available for sale
I went over my data one time to see just how fast T Mobiles throttled data was at (which they say is 2.5g). I was getting roughly .08k a sec. I didn't have to much trouble with using it for the internet. Sometimes I would get connection errors. Had no luck what so ever using the market though. Although if you're going to use it for the web browsing expect it to be rather slow.
It would only be worth it if you had a frequent wi-fi connection. If not, don't waste your time. It is painfully slow and virtually unusable.
Well, I am either at school or home that have WIFI.
Last month, I have used total of 300MB on my 5GB data plan :\ And that is because I updated few apps
Edge is faster than the speeds you would see if you were throttled. Throttled is roughly 56kb-80kb. Regular Edge door speeds on T-Mobile US are 150kb-300kb. However, YMMV depending on your location and a ton of other reasons.... When T-Mobile throttles they want it to be painfully slow.
