Can the Legend record 720p HD video ?

Both run on 600mhz but the 3gs has a Cortex-A8 based cpu (like the milestone) so it's much faster. I don't think it will happen ...
I would say impossible. The hardware cant even decode HD video, let alone encode it into the appropriate format.
i doesnt depend on wich cpu ist built in, it depends on the camera.

maybe the iphone 3gs had a better camera built in an apple hasnt enable its support or its just a upscaled video, the quality isnt that good, its a bit blury etc.
and the hardware would be able to decode, if someone would try to make it possible.

The Galaxy S line can record 1280x720 (720p) by default. The Nexus One records 720x480 (480p) by default, but can record 720p with a custom ROM. The Galaxy S is known to have a better camera than the Nexus One so the Galaxy takes the cake here. HOWEVER, Nexus One has the very handy LED flash for taking videos in the dark. Neither phone can do 1080p. AFAIK only the cortex A9 cpu's are capable of encoding videos in 1080p.

I would wait until Tegra 2 phones are released onto the market. There are newer phones out that the Nexus and Galaxies, and it seems like you want power!! And in all reality, if you would like to record in 1080p (which op didn't say, however 720p is fine imo), get a camcorder, because phones aren't that powerful...yet.

I'm not a techie but 720p usually means 1280 by 720 pixels where 1080p means 1920 by 1080 pixels. It's quite a jump between those values and even with a workaround that quality could be poop

Nope, if the processor was capable of encoding 1080p, the video won't be just an upsampled version of the 720p video. It would be a true 1080. It's not the sensor alone that's responsible for the video quality - there are the lenses and the hardware encoding. And these (especialy the lenses) have the negative impact on our video recording IMO.
If not full HD then least some workaround to improve the current state. Audio really suck and video I dark most of the times. Really disappointed with the video quality on desire HD

Galaxy S2 has a dual core CPU.
We would need that, if we ever manage to capture in 1080p it would just be a slideshow because the CPU cant keep up.

I recently did some testing. I encoded 2 of the exact same videos at h264 AVC .mp4 video files. Both at 2,000kbps video bitrate. The hd2 was at 800x480 with a 5:3 pan and scan at 23.97fps. I do realize that the reduced resolution is easier on the hardware but doesn't use much more cpu. I will do another test at a more universal resolution like say 720x480 for both devices to test again. The atrix was at 960x540 with a 16:9 pan and scan at 23.97fps. I then played back both videos on both devices in Vital Player Pro in software decoding. I set the clock to 750Mhz on the atrix and it was unable to playback smoothly. I had to increase to roughly 800Mhz to barely playback smoothly. For flawless playback, I needed 900Mhz+ on the atrix. With the hd2 on the other hand I first set the clock to 576Mhz and it was very choppy. So i increased it until it could playback smoothly. I raised it to 652Mhz and was able to playback flawlessly. I'm losing a lot of respect for the atrix with it not being able to decode without raising the cpu way up. It's a dual core but it's likely the OS and the application can't utilize the additional thread. This however shows that when running on one thread, the HTC HD2's cpu is much more powerful while software decoding video under vital player. I suppose once the roms and kernel's get more perfected, I suppose the Atrix will perform better. The down side is that's not going to happen for some time.
Your thoughts would be highly appreciated.

I have an atrix and an HD2 with nexus s rom on it. I found the HD2 better in anyways than the atrix, the hd2 is very very smoot compared to the atrix.........
maybe motorola did not a good job in software optimization.....

I'll reconvert the video into a universal 720x480 one at a 16:9 pan and scan and the other at a 5:3 pan and scan. I may even do a universal standard video to just compare the two devices.
you need to take into account the fact that the atrix is also driving a larger screen regardless of the video resolution. this is like comparing an orange to a fork.

No no, his point is valid. If the other device can play the same video at 652mhz and our at 912mhz, ours drains more battery while doing the same thing.
He still hasn't actually proven this anyways.

I'd like to point that the player used in op's test is not mentioned. As i posted in the best video player thread, i tried all video players mentioned in there and NONE was able to play correctly 2-3 test videos i tried, except for one, dice player. Plays 720p FLAWLESSLY! No choppiness, no out of sync, nothing. I am realy amazed! Please do try it and report back. It's a paid app, but has a 3day trial version. The player you use makes a huge difference. As if developers don't yet know how to take full advantage of tegra's capabilities in playing videos? Anyway, my new player, DICE!

Hmm you're right i missed that, guess too eager to reply. But i insist on testing with dice. Mx is no match trust me plus it pixelizes a bit my videos and ruins the quality.
Wow i just tried vital and it reaaly struggles to keep sync, hopeless to say the least.

Vital player pro is by far the best player I have used. It plays almost every format. Unlike other players. Anyway, using hardware decode on both devices you can run the bare minimum frequency and run flawlessly. However under software decode it uses raw cpu power and not the gpu ie (adreno on the hd2 and the nvidia tegra 2 on the atrix). I encoded a fresh new movie using AVC h264 mp4 video at a 2,000kbps video bitrate, 720x480 with an auto aspect ratio letterbox at 23.97fps, AAC audio at 48,000khz and 128kbps. I ran the tests of both devices and the results were very interesting! The htc hd2 was able to software decode with no problem at an astounding 537Mhz! Anything lower resulted in terrible audio sync issues and stuttering. I then ran the test on the atrix with very interesting results as well! The atrix was unable to decode stutter free at anything below 912Mhz!!! I suppose it comes down to the cpu not being designed to efficiently decode video in single threaded applications or software decode in general. However in combination with the devastating gpu power, all hell breaks lose and it would blow the doors of an hd2 in a balls to the wall full hardware comparison. However the atrix performs poorly in a single threaded application using software decoding. The hd2 is a beast when it comes to software decoding with it's beastly single thread. Just for your information both devices are able to decode the video in hardware mode at there minimum allowable frequencies perfectly. What I honestly suspect being the culprit is the fact that the kernel has not been perfected and it still highly based off of motoral's kernel with minor modifications. Once a fresh kernel is built from scratch and perfected for at least 6 months of release builds, then we will see the atrix outperforming the hd2 under this type of test. I believe Motorola intended people to rely on hardware decoding which is ideal since the cpu power doesn't really matter.

3 easy steps
- if reason is weak processor speed? overlock it
- if reason is low ram? extend it with microSD card and apply SD-Booster
- custom recording app with modified recording resolution. or only change /data/local.prop (but not work for most phones)

everything depends on the sensor......ours can handle higher res recording
but drivers need to be edited...
im trying to get a kernel with higher res but the drivers are tough and i have no
c++ experience...

So try to record your PC desktop with 30fps in resolution 1280x1024 with PATA/ATA HDD and 2GHz processor (1 core) if your HDD is low it cannot save 30 images(frames) per second to your HDD without lag.
If processor is low for rendering 30 frames frames in 1280x1024 resolution into video file and if HDD is too slow to write it, it is Fail. so if in our mobile is possible to speed up read/write speed of sd card and is possible to overlock cpu from 667MHz to 1300MHz, increase the ram using swap, so hardware side is done.
I think it is possible to change /or create custom\ driver for camera and customize recording resolution to our phone.
Sensor is one, If it can capture photo in 3.2MP it can also capture 25 photos/frames\ per second in 3.2MP and render it into video file without lags.
But I think 3.2MP is too much for our devices hardware. So 720pixel is enough to record a pretty nice video.

you are talking about filmin a video in 3.2 megapixel?!?!? are you out of your mind? Good cameras and high end phones take video in 1080p - that is 1920x1080=2megapixels. You think our little phone can do better? Its not only about RAM, CPU, the drivers need to be reworked but there are always hardware limitations that can not be changed. I'll bet all my money that there is no possible way to get even 720p video with our phone. If we get vga (640x480) recording we can be very happy. That is really hard to do, it may even be impossible since that is 4 times the current quality and it probably takes 4 times more power from memory, CPU, GPU, RAM and 4 months of making new drivers.

Someone was arguing about video in 3.2mp. Anyway, we can't even play 720p video without stutering, so recording is impossible. VGA could be possible however, lg p500 has vga recording with 600mhz CPU and better GPU, if we can get the CPU to do more job than GPU there is a chance. Unless the sensor just can't take it, then we are stuck.

we should be aiming for about 720x480 or close......
its a good res and our gpu should be able to handle it!
i can smoothly play dvd rips on mine without lag or anything at stock speed..
sensor shouldnt be a prob we just need a guy who is good with c++ knowledge
or driver writing experience....anyone?? if u need help with kernel i have successfully compiled a kernel from source and have all the necesary tools

i use the DutchMods ROM V5.3 on my Galaxy 3. In my opinion it's a perfect firmware... but there is a thing: poor camera (Photo and Video). It don't change change from Samsung Stock one. Video has 320x240... a very poor resolution. I think there is some possibilities to increase the resolution to 640x480 (15 fps). The solution can be a post elaboration. When you save the video, the apk Interlace the photo or video. In this way you can have 640x480 video and more high megapixel in photo. The are very good routines for interlace (for example in N70 Nokia there was a program who shot 4 photos and build an high resolution photo using 4 low res photo). The same with video : 320x240 can be 640x480 video with less number of frames. It's a suggest for all custom firmwares.

Well, you might ask SE - they are the only ones to know.
I don't think it is possible, all the 1080p camera phones have a dual core processor, the arc has one core processor, so i think it is related to the processor.

Yeah, concensus seems to be that it really needs the oomph of a dual core processor to be able to encode 1080 reliably without glitches.

It also depend upon the writing speed i.e. 1080p produces larger size videos so the time it takes to write data to SD is much higher than 720p so I would assume it's not as easy to update but it requires Hardware change
