ok, so i searched the forum and couldn't find what i was looking for; therefore, i decided to make a thread (i apologize if there is such a thread already available)
So, I have the N1 rooted and have CM5.0.7-t1 installed and the Iphone 3GS (my dad's) is on stock (not jailbroken or anything). Both phones are connected to the same network. I used Speedtest app on both phones. I ran the app few times on both phones from the same location (1 floor above the router) right next to each other. Both were connected to the same server location.
The Iphone's speed is ~17000kbs download and ~4500kbs upload. While the N1, from the exact same location, speed is ~9000kbs/~1700kbs. In fact, even when I'm right next to the router and have full bars connecting to wifi, the fastest I can get with the N1 is ~16000kps/~1800kbs.
That's a huge difference and wanted to know why that's happening.
But which one loads up webpages faster? I can care less what these speed apps say when I compare to other phones. Let's put them to the test and well see who's is faster. And usually its this bad boy.
no one else can duplicate this (of course you'd need to have both Iphone and N1)?
i just find it hard to believe that even though the N1 has a better processor, the wifi speed is significantly reduced compared to Iphone 3GS while connected to the same network
Speedtest app on Android only goes up to 10MB though as far as i can see on my screen. Mine maxxed out at 9600kb/s on a 20MB connection

That version is a test version for mytouch3g / dream phone not for nexus one. You should try with CM5.0.6... the wireless module are different on N1 that support wireless N (fastest) and the older dream/mt3g doesn't support
As you can see here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?/topic/2688-cyanogenmod-5-for-dreammagic-would-you-like-a-pony-v507-test3-05082010/
ok I don't understand why people keep trying to compare the two for accuracy or some **** Its really starting to bug me. The Nexus is made by HTC the iphone is made by Apple you can't compare the **** get over it. If your using the iphone 3gs you have old technology get use to it, right now the only reason why the iphone is faster is because I believe its using is it N or G with wireless routers? The Nexus one is getting and update soon which will enable one of the two on the phone. Sooo you can keep trying to find flaws in the nexus and spend the rest of your life doing so or you can chose a phone or how about build your own phone and shut up.

you need to calm down..he was trying to figure out why he wasnt get full speed on the nexus, not trying to find a flaw.
mobile speed tests are inaccurate. In any instance without looking at specs, wifi on my nexus is STUPID fast, I mean immediate loading literally. Then of course you see the nexus one's specs and it supports wireless b/g/N connectivity, it's without doubt one of the fastest devices on wifi to date. hell even on tmo's HSPA+ network it's faster.. comparing an ifag to the nexus are u crazy? not even worth the comparison

So they already have it enabled, so therefore his test is wrong and he just needs to get a life and stop comparing the two either you want to use the phone or you don't its that simple. All these comparison and threads being started comparing another phone to the Nexus need to quit cause its just annoying.. to come and look through forums of comparisons when your trying to see if a question you wanted to ask is on here.

not using the wrong rom as cyanogen released his test version of 5.0.7 for N1 yesterday; and yes the wireless N is active on cyanogen's rom

dude, if you find this annoying, then don't post on the thread; i didn't go out of my way to compare the phones; just happened to have both phones at hand and just decided to see how the two differs; i'm not spending hours and hours trying to find out which is better; the simple app took less than 2 minutes to run multiple times
i think it's a valid question to ask as to why the N1, using speedtest app, isn't going as high;

I can complain if I want to and You aint gon do **** about it, let alone. You are comparing two damn phones an iphone a nexus, your trying to figure out why one is performing better than the other? Correct? your comparing so STFU stop comparing and get over the speed test results you want to compare speeds lookup the chipset information and find out their stats on the iphones wifi chip and the nexus...done and over with no damn comparisons needed...then you have other things in the way such as what os the two are running and what the internals have, thus kernal updates and further updates. Speed tests on mobile phones are always limited by the CPU and RAM being the bottleneck. That is the answer to this thread. Each phone can only handle data at a certain speed.

Ok, might have been able to get some valuable information out of this thread but I'm guessing the attack of the 14 year olds has ended that possibility. Later dudes.
wow, you guys are all acting like little children. who cares if he's comparing to an iphone. a comparison is a comparison.
I posted a thread about slow upload speeds on the nexus a while ago. I can't get over 2500kbps no matter what I do, yet an itouch on the same network can go to 5000+ easily. I'm using Verizon FiOS. There's obviously something causing slower upload speeds on the N1. Does it really matter much in every day browsing? No. But does it exist? Yes.
Been looking around on line and haven't seen anything confirming when we will get our update. Anyone got any good speculation.

The international version of the phone is supposed to have it by the end of September. This is in no way an indication as to when the other phones will. It would make sense that they would give it to the international version first, then roll it out at the same time for all of the US variants (vibrant, captivate, fascinate, Epic).
I'm certain Sprint users would be in an uproar of AT&T got it first.... and the same goes for other carriers.
International version is getting it 23rd
http://androidspin.com/2010/09/13/rumor-samsung-galaxy-s-to-get-froyo-around-23rd-september/
Don't know about US versions but Epic might take a bit longer because they still gotta make TW3 work..
Didn't sprint say that the Epic was for sure getting it this month? I thought I remember reading that somewhere?
Epicly sent from my Sammy Epic using XDA App
As much as my Epic is my precious baby, if Samsung does NOT have Froyo + bug fixes out by the end of this month, I will be returning my phone for a EVO.
Samsung STILL hasn't put out bug fixes for the Captivate or Vibrant, and I'm losing the small amount of faith i had in samsung.

an epic user actually admits that samsung didn't fix captivate and vibrant. Someone was in the evo subforum saying that there were no problems with captivate or vibrant.
Also tbh, i wouldn't get my hopes up for the OFFICIAL release from samsung on froyo, but most likely someone will port another galaxy S update to the epic. So sort of like a custom rom with froyo running it.
Was told early to mid October today.

October isn't cutting it for me...
We only have Samsung's word when it comes to updates that they will push. After Samsung publicly promised that Froyo would be out by September, now you say mid-October?
Of course the updates will roll out once everyone's 30 day return period is up.
Samsung didn't even *promise* for other bug fixes that the Galaxy phones have! I mean come on, have you seen the list of official problems with the Fascinate? How long do you think those problems will take to be fixed (if ever?)
I'm being a pessimist, but I would LOVE for Sammy to prove me wrong.
I have not heard anything about the Epic getting the update but I know Verizon is planning as of right now for an October 2.2 update.
I will bet now that clockwork is slowly getting ported over that a custom 2.2 rom is not very far away for the rooted memebers
Definitely like the Epic more than Evo so not even considering moving anywhere. Who doesn't like improvements to their gadget..
Despite all the haba-haba concerning the gps, mine works fine with gmaps and copilot, no back button issue and so forth. Now if I could just find the battery drain culprit I'll be even more satisfied. As I'm typing I can watch my battery drop from 74 to 72. The battery meter/gauge needs some calibrating I think and some power management would be welcome.
Hmm, what else..guess I'll be on ebay later today for some cheap xl batteries and such. But seriously, this phone blows me away..so good and responsive. Love it.

Being an Epic user why are you even worried about the Fascinate? Especially since most of its problems are due to the Verizon customizations and a lack of QA by Verizon.

samsung is the one that issues the updates, not verizon. Since fascinate is a galaxy S phone, just like the epic, with common/similar problems, it might have the same treatment as the fascinate had (which means 1-2 updates, and then nothing).
People keep saying that galaxy s phone is where samsung "turns" their rep around, but i have yet to see any of the galaxy s phones being supported. Hence why i said there might not be a 2.2 update, but will most likely be a 2.2 rom modded for the epic.
Samsung hasn't even activated their MediaHub which, theoretically, will bring in a lot of revenue. I'm sure that is a higher priority for them than 2.2. I wouldn't expect our updates before they get that out the door. But then I'll start worrying.
Having a Nexus One And HD2 with android 2.2 i gotta say im disappointed by this phone. Not because of the hardware, Its great. I love throwing video files on it and watching them on the wonderful screen, i love the keyboard, pretty much no hardware complaints. But I been spoiled by android 2.2 and its enhancements.
I didnt think it would be a big deal when i got the phone, but i constantly find myself going back to my other phones for web browsing (sprint 3G is a JOKE!) and using my epic for video playing. I only had the phone a couple days and im gonna give it a better shot, but hopefully we see 2.2 by the beginning of october. If not i will sadly return the phone and pony up for a G2 or My touch HD.

What enhancements? The UI is the same as 2.1. It's not going to change that much. Sure, the benchmarks will be much higher because of JIT, but performance isn't going to increase that much. I'm not sure what you mean by being "spoiled". Do you mean the apps2sd card feature that only about 1 in 20 apps have?

You also get the v8 engine in the browser which makes it much faster at rendering photos.
Btw, sprint's 3g I find to be much better than t-mobiles since you could walk 5 feet and be stuck on edge with them. Happens to my sister with n1 all the time. We are in an area that is 3g for the other 3 carriers but only edge for tmo.

Lol, no its more than that. Like I said I love the phone. But I miss things like flash 10. The new gmail and Google search. Other things I cant put my hands on at this moment.
Like I said, I didn't think it would be a big deal when I got the phone and its really not as I replaced Google search with vlingo and use skyfire for video (when I can get decent speeds on sprints so called 3G or 4G.)
Funny, as I type this I realized the problem I have is not so much 2.1 vs 2.2 (although 2.2 is just better) but more with sprints network. On 3g I only get an avg of .5kbs and on 4G I get around 2 saw as high as 5mbs. I avg atleast 4mbs on T-Mobile.
It makes a world of difference when browsing or checking out a quick video.

Hey everyone, so this is probably the best evidence to date that we are going to be getting froyo very soon. Sprint is giving froyo over the air right now as we speak. I know that froyo for our vibrant has been beaten to death with a stick on these forums, but I think this is actually the first Real sign that we are getting this bad boy before the new year. Right? I mean they most likely have to have the u.s. Galaxy lines updates at about the same time, no? Anyways , just wanted to spread some christmas cheer

This is ridiculous, the vibrant was the first galaxy device in the US but will be the last to get Froyo. At this point I don't really care, I've been running Froyo for weeks anywase. Just another reason my beloved Tmobile is in last place and that will never change.

The best and only evidence was the leaked jk6. And it's still not quite ready. So, I bet it will be a couple of weeks, at least.
yep, let down by tmobile and samsung both. but at this point i think we have tmobile to blame.
t mobile was the first US galaxy and i think the Epic was the last, now the epic gets official froyo first...
oh well, ive had it for a couple weeks, but I think we should offically have it by then
Leaks are basically final, im running jk6 now. Official won't be any different..

The Fascinate was the last but I understand your point.
I think this is the order of release is:
1 Vibrant
2 Captivate
3 Epic
4 Fascinate
A little disappointed by T-Mobile. We were the first to get the GS phones in the States and will be the last to get Froyo... (officially).
I said it in another thread, (mentioned above too..) that JK6 will probably be T-Mo's final revision of Froyo the Vibrant.
I agree that both samsumg and tmobile are not doing a good job on upgrading these phones. At this point I can guarantee that I will not continue with either of these two companies after my contact expires,BUT back to the point I made earlier, there is no way it will take more then a week or two for tmobile to upgrade, I think this is def the sign I have been waiting for.

The Epic 4G has a watered down version of TouchWiz.
2.2.1 means JK6 is NOT final, at least it should mean that.. the Epic got 2.2.1 first right?
Seeing as the Epic just got 2.2, I wouldn't put this on TMo. Samsung said we'd have 2.2 in September, then in November, and now it's December when the first SGS derivative gets anything. That isn't a carrier issue, it's Sammy.
I'm not leaving TMo, but I think I'm heading back to HTC after this experience. (Unless I get suckered into the Nexus S, which means I can get Sammy's great hardware and leave the software to Big G.)

T-Mobile has it's own custom firmware for the Vibrant. Have you played with an Epic? It's clearly not the same firmware.
Same for the Captivate and Fascinate.
2.2 rolled out overseas already for the international version, it's being held up by certain carriers but it IS out.
What could be the hold up besides the carrier differences between firmware?
HTC is no better, the Desire still has 2.1 on certain carriers because it was released on more than one. The Incredible and Evo are phones that got updated very quickly but it's new behavior for HTC and very much not across the entire line of their phones.

HTC is better because you get Cyanogen's mods on it very quickly. Like some others, I'm very happy (for the most part) with the hardware, but upset with Samsung about the speed of updates. Samsung is joing Sony-Ericsson in the list of phone manufacturers I won't nuy from any more. Unless I can get software updates directly from Nexus S. The G2 with worse specs than the Vibrant, runs circles around it.
Obviously all carriers have their own firmware. But Samsung has been **** at getting 2.2 sorted. I honestly don't care, since 2.1 works fine (I'd much rather they junk RFS for etx2, than get some colored icons in the settings menu) - but the principle is that they suck at firmware. Regardless as to the differences the Epic has, it's in the SGS line, and 2.2 dropped a damn year ago - 2.3 is out in the next week, if not Monday.
And it's not like all of the world has 2.2 on their SGS - many places still don't have it.

I also came from G1 ago I understand what your saying. I love the hardware on the Vibrant. It if top of the line quality. The software is where the problem lies. It's just too laggy. I know I can root and get voodoo lag fix, but I rather run stock. I've rooted the Vibrant once (used Axura's latest rom), but rather stock rom although it's much slower.

1) the battery life is s**t i dont care what anyone says, its horrible.
2) still outdated android 2.2 when 3.0 honeycomb is out now. theyve been saying for months and months they would come out with 2.3. what's the deal with this junk?
3) the keyboard still dropping letters at random
this phone is CRAP!!!!!!!!! seriously i wish HTC made a better product than the shift, i would so switch (the shift has bad response time and is slower)>
Um, about #2: 3.0 is only for tablets and 2.3 was only released a while ago, it's barely even had times to be ported to most phones.
I smell a troll, go find a bridge!
I smell a troll, why don't you just leave and go find a bridge to hang out under.
3.0 is not out yet, all that's been released is the preview. There still isn't a single 3.0 device on the market so what the hell do you expect. And as the previous poster says its only for tablets (at least at this point)
If this phone is such a POS what are the better options? I don't know of any if the physical kb is something you want. This phone still has the best screen and overall processor performance currently on the market.
Yes samsungs software devs are aparently idiots who still can't release official 2.2, but the hardware is still the best available in my opinion. And if you load a custom rom from the fine developers here it actually works quite well.
Battery life may not be wonderful but what high end android smartphone is? The evo gets worse life than this thing. Why don't you go buy a dumb phone or an iphone and stop *****ing to people here.

I like how the OP firmly states that we have been promised 2.3 for months, nope we have only been promised 2.2 for months, lol, this guy is funny.Yeah Ill agree about the battery...

1. The majority of everyone disagrees with you, and I have a feeling you are on your phone non stop.
2. You are obviously ranting and have no reference of knowledge of what is fact with this phone
3. Use the keyboard on the screen, its faster, more accurate, and has auto complete/correct.

Hey folks, this is officially my first post on the XDA forums! After having recently been converted to Android from iPhone (had all of them from the original to the iPhone 4) I can honestly say that the Android OS is amazing and I will NEVER go back- absolutely in love with my Atrix and Xoom. Love the work you guys do here, please keep it up!
Anywho, I had a question about the LTE on the Xoom- in light of the recent HTC Thunderbolt delays due to alleged horrible battery life, and the EVO 4G not having the best battery life in the phone world, what do you think the LTE upgrade will do to the Xoom's battery life? Right now, it seems to have a great battery, getting through a full days use on one charge: I just can't help but wonder if that will still be the case after the LTE upgrade. What do you think? Will it be worth getting upgraded to an LTE capable device right off the bat even though LTE isn't exactly widely available? I'm just really concerned about potential battery issues.
Hope this isn't a double post- I didn't see a thread like this yet but I guess I could have missed it.
Thanks for any insight into this question and I appreciate all that you guys do!

I'm sure you'll be able to toggle 4G on/off... but yes adding a new radio will of course decrease battery life when it's on.
