Epic 4g Sucks!!! Please help - Epic 4G General

1) the battery life is s**t i dont care what anyone says, its horrible.
2) still outdated android 2.2 when 3.0 honeycomb is out now. theyve been saying for months and months they would come out with 2.3. what's the deal with this junk?
3) the keyboard still dropping letters at random
this phone is CRAP!!!!!!!!! seriously i wish HTC made a better product than the shift, i would so switch (the shift has bad response time and is slower)>

Um, about #2: 3.0 is only for tablets and 2.3 was only released a while ago, it's barely even had times to be ported to most phones.

I smell a troll, go find a bridge!
I smell a troll, why don't you just leave and go find a bridge to hang out under.
3.0 is not out yet, all that's been released is the preview. There still isn't a single 3.0 device on the market so what the hell do you expect. And as the previous poster says its only for tablets (at least at this point)
If this phone is such a POS what are the better options? I don't know of any if the physical kb is something you want. This phone still has the best screen and overall processor performance currently on the market.
Yes samsungs software devs are aparently idiots who still can't release official 2.2, but the hardware is still the best available in my opinion. And if you load a custom rom from the fine developers here it actually works quite well.
Battery life may not be wonderful but what high end android smartphone is? The evo gets worse life than this thing. Why don't you go buy a dumb phone or an iphone and stop *****ing to people here.

Mehh
I stopped worrying about it ,when we get the ota we will probably be 2 os's behind or at least 1.
This is the nature of the beast.

I like how the OP firmly states that we have been promised 2.3 for months, nope we have only been promised 2.2 for months, lol, this guy is funny.Yeah Ill agree about the battery...

3. Use the keyboard on the screen, its faster, more accurate, and has auto complete/correct.

Trade Epic for Evo????

Guys I need your opinions, I have had the EPIC since launch day, after to switching to sprint from a Nexus One on T-Mobile. Sure I like the keyboard, but find myself using it say 50 percent of the time and other 50 the onscreen. But what makes me want to return it for the Evo are these Reasons:
1. Android 2.2 – Already available on Evo
2. Custom Roms – Many already developed on Evo
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
4. SAMSUNG- They already have gave us a Touch Wiz that is only a watered down version of the ones on the other Carriers, Cant change the icons on dock, No media or clock apps that the other Touch Wiz 3.0 phones have, and Finally UPDATES! They have announced 2.2 on there tablet and already has it working on it… Where is our 2.2?
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
What’s your guys opinions? I mean I like the phone, im just so scared of it being left behind of the dust because Samsung wont fulfill there development promises, While HTC has a pretty good track record for moving updates fast.
I'm in EXACTLY the same boat.
Came from a Nexus on Tmo, to Sprint. Love the Epic dearly, but am still worried about it being supported by Samsung.
The Evo is a step down from the Epic to be honest, but a high powered device is nothing if the manufacturer doesn't continue to support it!
How are they not supporting it? They just did an update yesterday, and have already said Froyo IS coming. What more do you want?
The Evo is a step backwards as the Snapdragon CPU is slower, and the graphics are incredibly inferior to the PowerVR GPU inside the Epic.
I used to have an Evo, and when it first came out it had its own issues as well. I'd say you should stay on board at least until day 29, and then see how you feel about it.

How the **** can Samsung and sprint release a phone that has a few major bugs:
1. After 24 hours (or less) the gps doesn't work unless you reboot (or use a program to flush data) the phone.
2. 3g uploads (99% of the country uses 3g) are capped at 150k
3. when you upload ANYTHING the phone studders like john the studderer on the howard stern show ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yBI8zdqLzw&feature=related )
I'm pretty pissed to be honest.
I came from a Evo. To tell you the truth, I prefer the Epic over the Evo. 30fps caps and a weak gpu. I couldn't even explain to you how bad it was, the Epic blows everything away in the Evo, besides the development of course.
Pros:
Evo development
Kickstand
Bigger screen? (I don't have a preference, but it's noticeably larger)
HTC Sense (I hate it, then love it.)
Works with any type of mic headset. <3
Cons:
In call sound is pretty low, I had to turn it all the way up and still couldn't hear other people well. (I had 2 Evo's, both were the same in call quality)
30 fps cap. It can be fixed with a kernel, still 30 fps cap is pretty low for such a great phone.
Gpu lags, games like N.o.v.a was playable, but not smooth as it is on the Epic.
The touch screen wasn't as accurate. Miss type a lot more on the Evo than the Epic.
No support for direct media playback. The epic does this flawlessly, I don't even have to convert videos.
The screen is washed out. The HTC Hero was noticeably more colorful.
Horrible wifi signal.
Not to bash on the Evo, I loved it, but it wasn't what I was looking for. If you enjoy a great development scene. I say go all in for it. It's a great phone. Though I left it for a better phone, Epic 4g.

What more do i want? Since i had 2.2 on my nexus one in May, i want 2.2 on an epic. lol. And its the point, if they take this long for 2.2 now, will they even update it to the next version of android that Google will be updating q1 next year? And why the watered down Touch Wiz? Clock app and music player for example, have you seen the apps on Vibrant. We do not have touch wiz 3.0 its like 2.5ish. Your write about waiting tell day 29 though to have a strong decision. I probably just want to much to fast.

Im in the same boat, although i havent officially left tmo yet. I did however return my epic 4G after 4 days and ordered an EVO, and im thinking of canceling that and just sticking with my HD2 and Nexus One. I just dont trust samsung and there update history. Yes they released the update yesterday but of course that was fast cause it generates money for them.
Besides the battery taking forever to charge, i really have no other issues with the phone. Its one of the best i ever owned, i just wish i had more confidence in samsung and i really hope they prove me wrong.
I will admit i will miss not having to convert movies for it, thats what i loved most about my N900.

What?
I came from the HTC Hero. Ask any other Hero user how quickly HTC pushes out updates and how "polished" they are...
HTC doesn't do any better than any other company. The thing is, they have community support. The ONLY reason that the Hero was bearable was because of the dev community (which made the phone amazing).
Like several people have said, Samsung already put out an update for this phone (two, if you count the weird launch day update). They've promised 2.2 sometime this year (October was the last time frame I heard). The EVO didn't launch with 2.2 either, remember? The Nexus One is Google's baby and is going to get updates before any other phone. Every other phone has to have Froyo cleaned up for it.
Give Samsung a little bit of a chance. You know you'll regret it if you give up and the Epic gets 2.2 and blows everything else away.

My Epic feels snappier than an Evo on the best Cyanogen crack. This doesn't bother me one bit. Plus once again phone's only been out since August 31. ROMS are on the way
3. HTC- I feel they push updates much faster, and work harder to polish there UI.
I actually like TouchWiz and sideways scrolling, plus an update just came out for Epic
4. SAMSUNG- They already have gave us a Touch Wiz that is only a watered down version of the ones on the other Carriers, Cant change the icons on dock, No media or clock apps that the other Touch Wiz 3.0 phones have, and Finally UPDATES! Your 2.2 will be here when it gets here. "They have announced 2.2 on there tablet", and so what????? Did they ever say the Epic is NOT getting 2.2
5. CASES, putting a case on the Epic makes it look huge like a brick, and not very form fitting.
...and so is putting lipstick on a pig. The Epic has a slide out keyboard, which naturally adds to its girth. If you can't stand it like that in a case then go commando.

You buy a phone for the potential it has right now (and the Epic wins over the Evo performance wise, even on stock in a lot of areas), not what it may do nor not do eons from now. And besides 2.2 is set for the Epic. If you don't have the patience to wait for it then please take back the Epic and let someone else not be deprived of one in stock.

The DI07 update supposedly fixed the massive lag while uploading, at least in the gmail/email app.
I love the epic its the best phone i have ever had, but its a samsung. I hate the name samsung. HTC phones feel, look, and sound much more classier.

Not for me. That and the ****ty radio are my two biggest gripes about the epic.
The evo has a lot of gripes. I had one since release.
1. Even with evo switch the fps is still inconsitant and the device feels laggy at times and thqts with 2.2. The epic on 2.1 is is already faster.
2. ****ty video and sub par camera software
3. Screen isn't as nice
The evo wins hands down on
1. Radio at least at this point is superior
2. Solid build as its not a slider

I was hoping it would. However, take a picture, and upload it to anywhere (picasa, facebook, etc) it hasn't fixed it for me at all.
In all fairness, the Epic just came out on the 31 of August. I have both and love them both(the Evo is not activated at this time, strictly Wifi), but the Evo didn't get 2.2 until over 2 months sfter release...patience
I actually sold my evo and got the epic and I haven't looked back. Both phones are nice but just like some people recognizes the Epic's problems, one must also remember that when the Evo launched, it too had its share of problems...battery drainage being one them, screen seperation, screen tearing etc. The Evo also launched with 2.1.
It seems as though everybody want froyo and they want it now. I think you should just keep the epic and just wait it out for froyo. Because I have a feeling that once froyo hits our epics, everyone that left to run to the evo or some other phone will be having some big second thoughts.

One thing that I'm getting annoyed at is how it seems that it's ACCEPTABLE to release a phone with these issues.
All good points guys. I'm going to wait it out. This phonw is snapper than the nexus, and that will be the ame as epic. So it will pay off for me to hold on and wat for the development community to do what samsung probably will not. At least its not a moto phone right? We wouldn't be getting any updates tell we rioted on there building...

Nothing is perfect. If it were then everyone would buy the one perfect phone and there would be no competition. What do you want people to do, march on Sprint and Samsung and say. Samsung tear down this wall of ****ty product development. Or maybe have some common sense and look at the big picture. It is a cell phone, mind you a very expensive one, but a cell phone nonetheless. Look at the EVO, the screen is Capped at 30 FPS and it is just horrid, I understand you are pissed about all the cell phones and such, mostly the quality control. How did Apple miss the antenna miss-hap on the iPhone 4? Epic 4G's upload speeds are shoddy, at least this can be fixxed with a software update (hopefully!), and also the EVO's screen cap, they say they are looking into it. It seems you are out to get the world and just genuinly pissed at everyone and everything, so there will be no convincing you otherwise. But man, it can't be healthy to be so upset about something fairly arbitrary in life. And I understand your view on the GPS and Upload Speeds. They are unacceptable, and I will be making a phone call to Sprint AND Samsung because I to believe that we should be getting more for our buck, but I also believe these can fixxed and addressed accordingly. I have had an HTC Hero, I love that phone, but I also got it a year after its release so I didnt have any problems with it, I like HTC a lot and was going to buy an EVO but got sick of waiting. I think the wait times for those phones are just insane, then I saw the epic and I really like Samsung products so I picked up my Epic and love it. Because of the physical keyboard there is some give and it feels more cheap but I realize this is due to the fact that it needs to give (the keyboard cant be to tight is what I mean). Some say this is not acceptable, I realize it is needed. My point is that phones arent perfect, and I get irritated but not so upset as to swear and just be genuinly pissed.
All I have to say is stick in there and just have fun!

Samsung Vibrant old news already?

Ok so the Vibrant is not that old but seems like its forgotten already. Well the whole Galaxy S series! Bs since its only like 4 months old. Makes me mad that android devices get left behind so fast just to be replaced so quick. Not everyone can buy a new android device every week. I love my Vibrant but this crap makes me mad! you don't know much about the field and business of technology do you?
The second you buy any electronic device, it is obsolete before you even walk out of the store with it. It's something you have to accept if you make any electronics purchases.

Well as long as Samsung support the current Galaxy S line with updates I will be happy, if they don't, I know I won't be buying a Samsung phone again.
Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.
4.5" screen
5+mp camera w/ flash and dedicated camera button
actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID
And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.
Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.
Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~
Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

This right here. What should have been a wonderful experience has been badly sullied by non-existent support.
Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.

Losing faith in atrix?

Anyone else slightly losing faith in their atrix?
I just put gingerbread on my cappy and I'm so impressed by the speed. I know I'm comparing froyo to gingerbread but for a dual core Id expect a bit betterr performance. The cappy handles live wallpapers much better than the atrix.
What's keeping me here is the fact that moto seems to actually care, the phone has gotten two updates already, and while second one has lower my phone down, I imagine that will be fixed.
Do you think the atrix is going to "fly" once gingerbread comes out for it? That's what I'm hoping for, or even if moto unlocked the bl
It will fly with gingerbread!
yea my buddy has an incredible and gingerbread made that phone buttery smooth.
this phone is still new.. I'll give it at least six months before I think about getting rid of it

This, I believe, refers to what the OP may be describing.
Smartphones are newer and better all the time. People on here buy every new phone! The Atrix new luster and excitement has worn off, and people are ready to move on to the next big thing(seems to be Galaxy S 2).
Thats the nature of the tech industry, and more specifically the smartphone industry.
I don't think I'd mind waiting 6 months, but also part of me says that 6 months is a long time to get the phone to a smooth point.
It will fly if we get the 2.4 gingerbread optimized for dual cores.
Hey,
I had my Evo for about a year before having to make the decision to switch to AT&T. Here in the USVI, AT&T is just plain out faster, calls are clearer, there are less issues with the service and so on and so forth. I would have kept my Evo until the Evo 3D came out or something.
The Atrix is a beast of a phone and the service is great! I'm satisfied with what I have and from this point on, it can only get better.
Have faith, man.
I never got all those comments about how unresponsive the Atrix is.. mine is super responsive. Granted I come from a Touch HD (WinMo) phone which was friggin' slow as molasses by today's standards so yeah.. but hey the iPhone 4 is supposed to be a snappyness reference yet I constantly see my friends iPhones lag doing some basic thing at some point, and I find my Atrix to be way up there, so i'm not sure about all the complaining.. I don't get it.

Things that I would like to change:
-Different Themed Notifications bar with GingerBread Update
-HSPA+
I like the phone, I dont have any other problems with it. I can live with a locked bootloader, to me its not that big of a deal anymore because we wont get it unlocked....
I lost faith in my phone months ago. Wish I held out for an actually good phone.

The thing that sucks about this phone is mostly just the locked bootloader... sure gingerbread may come, and we finally got the hspa+, but what I really want is to be able to flash custom roms. Until then we're basically crippled and are stuck with clunky and featureless motoblur which barely taps into this things potential.

Lol.. No matter how amazing a device is, there will always be those who criticize it.
The hardware specs and technological innovations implemented on this phone are unlike any phone ever produced. For you to imply that this is not "actually a good phone" makes you appear very ignorant. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way.
I think the main issue here is usability for the average non-tech savvy user.. When they don't understand why the phone isn't doing what they want it to do, they assume it can't or it just sucks.. There are some users such as myself who understand the progression of new hardware & the intricacies involved with getting software to interface correctly with it. We expect to run into issues & focus on solutions rather than complaining.
If you want an environment where everything just works without much input needed from you, consider steve jobs walled garden aka iOS
Otherwise, dig in, try to understand how android & the phone works.. It's only gonna get better.

Most roms are just gingerbread with features that don't work. Flashing roms is fun until you needs to actually use your phone. Custom roms and kernals have so many bugs.

No one expects to run into issues with a 600 dollar piece of technology. They should, and rightfully so, expect it to work. THe G2x seems to have almost identical specs, and that phone performs much better under all situations. Android isn't about forcing the user to do unnecessary steps to make his phone work on par with any other on the market, its about giving you the opportunity to allow you to do more than whats on the the market. I can say right now, for the past 3 android phones i've boughten, i've never had to do anything special to make them work. Power on. Power off. Done. What makes the atrix different?
I know that sounds like a hateful post, but it's not. I just don't think it's fair for people to say a 600 dollar piece of electronic isn't gonna work right out of the box. I do still love my atrix, the form is great and the fingerprint scanner is very nice. But my concerns are legitimate and aren't solvable by steve jobs.
I'm fed up. Totally disappointed by the phone. The webtop mode remindes me of the carphone idea. Seemed good at the time buy useless shortly after. Hopefuly the galaxy S 2 will be announced tomorrow for att. If not on ordering from UK. This is the best android phone out right now for AT&T. Almost makes me wish I didn't jump ship for the iPhone 4 in June from T-Mobile (g2x & nexus s)

I think AT&T is announcing the samsung infuse tomorrow, not the SGSII, but who knows. I agree, webtop was cool for that first time you show your friends, but i've never used it since. While i have a HUGE grudge against samsung from the captivate debacle, i might try the SGSII but that probably won't hit until july like the cappy.
I switched to an inspire, I love the phone and everything about it, no lag with the latest cm. I'm switching back to the atrix for the ffc and battery life, battery life is abysmal on the inspire.

My Experience (Evo Vs Epic)

hope u all enjoy this read.
im going to post my experiences and thoughts with both phones.
not hating on either one, just a clear cut opinion.
I personally first came to android after the Evo came out, i was lucky to get one July 27th. I had the G1 for a couple weeks on Tmo (a long time ago) and i was not impressed.
before that i was a blackberry guy for the longest.
I switched from Tmo to sprint because tmos service went to crap. i drive for a living and i do about 200 miles a day. Tmos service would drop during the drive in the same exact spots where i knew i would lose service. 7 different places to be exact with crappy reception in between.
i figured id try sprint. anyways i stuck with them with a awesome phone the Evo 4g.
The Dev area for the evo is un-real, roms galore, kernel galore, everything is flashable and seems to be very easy to do.
A plus for the evo for sure.
With the right rom/kernel combo along with the seido 3500 battery, it was a incredible phone. Doing anything i needed it to when i needed it. Never having to worry about battery life.
i had no issues with the evo, but i did have to return it due to it overheating and shutting off until cooled (kernel issue and something i did im sure), i got it replaced and was happy as a clam.
As for samsung, i critized them and hated on them every chance i got.
the support for them always seemed to be crap and doing things on them seemed to be not as easy.
well some things happened id rather not discuss and i had to get rid of the evo, i found a Epic on craigslist(may 1st) and it was listed as a "galaxy pro" The guy didnt know what it was, but the pics showed it was a epic. i verified the ESN was clean and picked it up for $65.00!!
Couldn't pass that up at all, besides all that i needed another android, for a couple weeks i was using a beat up blackberry curve 8530 and seemed to be having withdraws lol.
Anyways i fell in love with the sammy as soon as i started playing with it. The screen is just poppy and incredible. it blows the evo screen away easy.
im not fond of slide out keyboards, but i figured with the screen being 4 inchs, id have no issue with adjusting from the evo and its 4.3 inch.
Touchwiz isnt all that bad either, i thought it would be worse, but its not bad at all. Can become adjusted to TWiz or Sense very quickly.
it fits well in my hand, but im too interested in the power button on the side, seems out of place. Really im used to the button up top along with the charger port on the bottom instead of the top, but love the little "door" on the charger port.
Dev area for the Epic is smaller, and a little more "intermediate" then the simple flash and go of the evo.
i miss the evo dev section, but have become used to the epic area and getting the hang of things quickly.
To be honest.
both phones are great, id be happy with either or. With the evo its all in the dev section, with the epic its all in the screen.
i wont be slamming samsung anymore because im just as happy as i was with the evo. i may go back to HTC for the ease of things after the evo 3d or something else comes out.
but im very comfortable with the epic and its a great choice in the android world right along side the evo.
the screen really is amazing. i like the camera better too. sometimes i wish i had a snapdragon phone just for roms, but this whole nexus S thing could change everything. sounds like a fair review to me. just flashed the ACS rom and its pretty damn good. will deffinitly tide me over till GB
I picked up an evo on launch day, broke it and jumped ship to the epic when it launched. While the evo had a better dev community imo, I still enjoy my epic. The screen is really what takes the cake. I could care less about the keyboard so next time I'm in the market for a phone I'm gonna sit back, observe the dev communtiy for a while when the new flagships launch and see what happens. I do love my epic but when it comes down to it, its all about development which I feel the epic lacks compared to the evo. The devs here are amazing, I just feel that things are much slower around here than the evo section. Still though this is a great phone. I've been running the ACS rom for a few days and its flawless. Not to mention I was able to get a day and a halfs worth of battery on it

I really like Touchwiz, I avoid roms that don't support it.
I first got my epic over the Evo because I knew the battery life was going to be much better. I'm not sure if it's really any different or not, I haven't used an Evo many times other than at work (I work with phones). I think the epic is better because of the AMOLED screen. Plain and simple, everything just looks better.

You know i forgot to say anything about the camera itself.
we all know the evo and HTC make ****ty camera drivers , constant complaint even though its a 8mp on the evo.
samsung on the other hand knows what they are doing in this regard.

im running syndicate fully loaded myself.
having crappy battery but im trying to address all that as of right now.
My wife has an evo and I have the epic so I do have the luxury of flashing both. Yes the evo development section s is bigger buy there are so many roms they all copy each other. I like the roms hear as they all offer something unique. I also love the Amoled screen and the camera. The epic is faster in both cpu and gpu. They are both awesome phones I just prefer the epic. It is if u like to flash stuff to have an evo though. I can flash all day lol
Sent From My Evo Killer!!
This is what I like to see..a lot of people never give things a fair chance and go off baseless rumors....
For example:
1) Samsung does not support their phones:
This was kind samsungs fault as they promised an 2.0 update to the Behold and then never delivered..said it wasn't possible and only updated to 1.6...from then on everyone made the assumption that Samsung would NEVER update their phones...other manufacturers havent updated their phones either on plenty of occasions..sure its Samsungs fault for not delivering but you can't base everything on 1 occasion...Also a lot of people group "support" and "updating"...Samsung is know for its good support actually..
2) Touchwiz is the devil that lags up the phone and brings nothing
While all UIs add bloat..TouchWiz is not as bad as people make it out to be..most hate TouchWiz received was in the winmo days...and the old Touchwiz was junk..plus the new TouchWiz looks similar to the iphone in the app launcher thus mustering more hate...I wont say TouchWiz is the best UI..but its one of the cleanest UIs I've seen..
I find it Ironic how an HTC device has like 5 issues and people just go oh well..while if samsung has 1 issue people scream how Samsung sucks and they shouldnt have bought it...my only request is that people look at all manufacturers equally without bias and judge based on the overall product fairly..
So its not about who is better HTC or Samsung..its about who is it acceptable to buy from...and at this moment both HTC and Samsung are my options for buying...this gives me more choice...in the future I hope to add LG and maybe Motorola to my "acceptable" list if they meet my standards..and the more manufacturers that meet my standards the more "CHOICE" I have...I expect by the SGS 2 becoming mainstream the community will rival HTC devices in development..
What I really liked about the evo is that EVERYTHING Is flashable.
From radio updates,to pri, to anything you can think of.
You just download it and flash it, so simple.
Kernel support its also great.
thats what I miss most.
Not saying that the epic devs are bad, im loving avs.
But the evo area is def more popular.

can you reiterate? we can flash anything on the Epic as well...
But obviously they have a larger dev base due to:
1) Evo coming out first
2) People choosing HTC just because its HTC
3) Sprint spent their entire budget advertising the EVO while spent nothing to advertise the Epic until it won the pcworld #1 phone award..then they spent a little..
4) Nexus One giving a lot of grounds
5) Devs more used to how HTC does things
Well Odin has to be used for radios and stuff.
We cant simply flash a rom without checking what file system it is, things like that.
They are non existent on the evo.
Along with the whole rfs/ext system thing we don't need to worry about on the evo.

Your joking right? I have only used odin once to flash the ec05 modem and I've flashed most of the eb13/ec05 roms, kernels, themes, ect. Actually I've flashed all eb13/ec05 kernels and have been on cm7 a1&a4. I avoid odin at all costs, but its always there just in case I goof. So far so good.
Ya. The epics screen is amazing. Im not buying no other device unless its amoled.

The Epic is my first Android phone and I picked it over the Evo for two main reasons.
1) Physical keyboard
I thought I needed a physical keyboard and it turns out I do and I don't. For email/sms Swype works great. However for things like working in the terminal the virtual keyboard just doesn't work for me.
2) The screen.
Don't have to say much here
Overall I've been very happy w/ my Epic. Still need to test out Syndicate but for now rooted w/ the screen rotation lag fix is good enough.

Is Evo 4g on its last breath?

With less and less devs working on the Evo 4G nowadays, I ask, is Evo 4G officially being forced to retire? I myself even went to check on upgrading to the 3VO. It's no fun without any new Roms to play with. Being a flashoholic, I'm suffering from withdrawal, and it's hard to deal with.
What exactly leads you to say that devs are no longer supporting the EVO 4G? The development forum seems as hopping as ever to me.

However, it's also true that the source code for Gingerbread for the Evo was only released a few days ago.

I don’t know, it looks like we shall be set free, in good time but in a "registered" kind of way. At least that is what I am getting from 3D forums and the f+Bk page.
I could be wrong about all of this, but to me, the writing is on the wall. I really feel the demise of EVO 4G, as far as development standpoint. The latest talks is that most of the devs are jumping ship. I mean, can you really blame them. Great phone that has been improved. I've even seen what could be called a collection plates to get certain devs 3VOs. No disrespect to anyone doing. Hard/good work should not go without its just reward.
I think there just isn't anything new really other then kernels no new OS atm to play we have sense up to 3.0 and why port much much more? I do see improvments in each ROM though just slower EVO 3d is hoping cause they don't have anything

Yeah, it is important to understand that the big rush in the beginning is:
1) Get root
2) Wait for Source code
3) Fix **** ups from the manufacturer
4) Make modifications [possibly from other devices] to improve Android overall.
It's been over a year, all that's been done. While improvements are still coming constantly...the bulk of that work for the Evo is, well, done.

I have to agree here. I think a lot of people have gotten into the habit of changing ROMs on a way too frequent basis, to the point where they're switching weekly with 4-6 Nandroid backups of different ROMs so they can jump around as much as they want.
That list above is the true goal of Android development. If I find a good ROM, and there's relatively little bugs (especially less than stock), looks great, gives me something flashy (like Sense 3.0) I can be satisfied for months at a time, not even updating most of that time.
Unless there is something that has yet to be perfected on the EVO, development could halt right now and it wouldn't hurt what we already have. Look at all the things that's been done for the EVO since release:
Wireless N
HDMI-to-TV mirroring
Hacked hotspot
Notification bar power controls
4G on CM7
Hacked Hulu (which is now pointless, but eh)
...and more I just can't remember right now because I haven't had my morning coffee yet. The EVO has actually evolved (no pun intended) over the last year and 2 months, and like any piece of hardware, we're going to reach the limits. But the EVO has shaped the future of Android forever, and that's what we need to remember most.
Our community has created some of the most amazing pieces of code Android has ever seen, and that will only get better with the 3D. Time to move on...if I had the money, I'd get the 3D too, but that's just because I can't root my replacement EVO...

That is my point. We have reached the pinnacle, when it comes to development for the EVO. As a dev, why wouldn't you feel it's time to move on? Their work here is done. The writing is on the wall guys. The most they can do is make minor mods here. The next challenge is 3VO or some other device. I will not mention those other devices by name, I am EVO.
I think there's a huge difference between "end of dev cycle" and "device is on last breath".
Is your evo having any problems running anything? Are you not on the latest android 2.3.5?
CM still has nightlies, miui still has weeklies, only thing really slower is sense and the only one to blame there is htc (and possibly yourself for wasting your time with sense).

I completely agree here. My EVO is doing everything I could possibly want! We "may" be seeing the end of OS development for this phone, but now their concentrating on kernels now that the source has been out for a couple of weeks.
I think saying last breath is alittle strong. As far as anything else that can be developed rom-wise maybe. This is still going to be a serviceable phone for quite some time. If you are a person with flash issues you might have a problem. To me once kernels get perfected you shouldn't have to flash like a maniac anyway. Honestly I think the only other thing to perfect now is hdmi and personally I could care less but that's just me. I'm going 3d later this month and the Mrs gets my OG EVO. For her this will be a beast of a phone. Writing on the wall yes, last breath, far from it.
Peace

I do not believe this statement is too strong at all. Technology moves at a very rapid pace. Once something hits the shelves it's already old technology. Lets take the iPad (yes, I dare to mention this) for example. This was once a revolutionary product, except now, we have the Tablet, the Eee Pad, the iPad2, etc. You yourself even call it by the name OG EVO, which usually signifies something old. So yes, SIR, I do dare say that the EVO is on its last breath.
P.S Trade-in your EVO for a $125 credit toward the 3VO
I guess we look at last breath differently. To me last breath means no more support. Apps no longer supported etc. But we are different people and view things differently.
