Greetings All,
It's me again, last week I posted some side by side photos of the Evo 4G and the Droid X. This week we have two of sprint's 4G handset side by side, the HTC EVO 4G next to the Samsung Epic 4G.

You should try matching wallpapers to compare the difference between screens, but I think we all know the difference by now.
Could they make the SAMSUNG a bit bigger? Its kinda small as it is right now!!!
lol, you are spoil by our EVO Big Screen....

Yea, I will try it and post the pics, Got sooooooo many phones to play with on my job. Work in a technical support group so we all have the different high end phones from the various network...
A coworker here at the office told me she was all excited about her first Android phone and invited me to come see it. It's an Epic, the first one I've actually seen in person. I didn't want to rain on her parade so I kept my opinions to myself but all I could think was "You are still in your 30 days!! Take this POS back and get an EVO while you stil can!!!"
I am very surprised at what an awful device the Epic seems to be. I know opinions are like a-holes but mine is: The Epic doesn't hold a candle to the EVO and I have a hard time thinking of them as similar class phones. Samsung is a GREAT TV maker, if only they made phones as well as they make LCD TV's they would be a serious contender in the Smart Phone market. Too bad they are missing this boat (IMO)
First thanks OP for the pictures.
I had a chance to meet face to face with the Epic here is what I thought:
The screen is beautiful it's like looking at a highres photo. Simply amazing.
OK now that I have that out of the way. The device feels like a cheap kids toy. I kid you not in your hand it just feels like its going to break. It doesn't have that quality build feel of the EVO. The screen doesn't tilt, anyone who owned a TP2 knows what I'm talking about. The screen is small compared to the EVO. I don't care if its .3" or .9" its smaller by a long shot. Processor was slower than the EVO it scored like 954 in quadrant standard. I know it can be over clocked and it doesn't have FroYo so at best it will be as fast as the EVO. It did run 54 fps avg with about 4 or 5 stdev out of the box.
Got to go so I don't have time to proof read my statement, thread grammar checkers let me know.
nicely done op! i really like seeing a side-by-side comparison. even though i like the physical keyboard, i don't like how thick it is! i'm sticking with my EVO. it's just so sexy.
P.S. the samsung owner should check their voicemails!!
give it some time man, here is a a screen shot of the epic in quadrant
we only have stock 2.1 right now and if your looking for a base value look at the nexus one pre 2.2 and compare it to froyo nexus one. that is a substantial jump in score, perhaps when we get 2.2 it will indeed be as fast as the evo (with froyo) but is there a base score for evo on 2.1?
im not looking to pick a fight here but how exactly does it feel like your going to break it in your hand? im curious to known what kind of punishment your dealing to your poor phone that you would break it just by normal use..
not really sure why on the epic forum we have a lot of evo users coming in to complain about how the epic is a pile of crap (sorry dont check the evo boards so i dont know if there has been "counter" attacks) but why cant we all just get along as android brothers and enjoy 4g speeds together?
*EDIT* found some people from way back when teh evo was first released getting about 560ish on quadrant with stock 2.1, linpack gave yall 5.8 pretty decent compared to my old htc hero's 5.2. so the point of all this is just give it some time guys and we can both be on froyo
My post was not a personal attack just an opinion. Come on you know what cheap feels like don't kid yourself. And no the EVO did not score 560ish before OC and Froyo I believe it was around 900ish. Also I did state that they would probably be with in range of each other. We can all get along but we also have to deal with each other short comings such as the EVO GPU not being as good as the Epic. Soon dual and quad cores will be out. Last I am in the EVO forum.

oh i know we are, but as a person who browses the epic forums quite a bit there is a good number of people badmouthing the epic, wasnt directing that towards you i know your post was just an honest opinion. some evo users apparently have "iphone user syndrome" and cant fathom another device being close to their holy grail.
i personally am not looking forward to the dual cores as things are the evo and epic (out of the box) suffer from horrid battery life, yet that hasnt stopped samsung from working on the orion chip (1ghz dual core, claims to have 5x the power of the hummingbird).
havent had any complaints about cheapness for my phone, it looks and feels solid in my hands, got a nice bit of weight on it, not too far off from my hero. my first complaint about it was location of usb port and lack of hardware buttons. after owning the phone for a bit i can honestly say im very disappointed with the front camera, it is horridly cropped and such a low res it looks deformed when trying to use qik, (got plenty of issues with qik too but thats the app makers fault there).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695703
in this post shows a comparison of the hero vs the evo, and the evo stock is getting 544 on quadrant. once you guys have oc it got a bit better and of course froyo, i can only hope we get the same lovins
We both love our phones that's a win. I think the front cameras low resolutions are done so when using apps like qik they won't use tons of bandwidth and will semi work on 3G.

Heh. Fans of the Epic probably shouldn't post in a thread within the EVO forums. EVO users tend to think it's the best phone in the world. I just think it's a slightly upgraded HTC desire
But I don't know how you can say that the Epic doesn't hold a candle to the EVO. I own both, and I prefer my Epic. If the difference was that big, I never would have considered the Epic But I like my EVO enough to not get rid of it. I just can't. But it sits around for the most part It just doesn't excite me.
all hail evo
It is the best phone in the world....until the next phone I want is released. I give it until Q1 2011.
The screen looks so much better on the epic
Not sure where you guys are getting those quadrant scores... I have a rooted evo running... whatever rooted (but stock RUU that came out 6 weeks ago or so) and my Quadrant score is 540-560 all the time.
Picked up an Epic for my wife (she has to have a physical keyboard) and it scores in the high 800's low 900's stock.
Would love to boost my evo. Refuse to update to FROYO until the calendar and Gmail push bugs are addressed though.
Quadrant scores mean nothing anyways. Screen on epic does look great at times but that screen door effect its really evident at times as well.
My buddy has the epic and if I didn't have an evo I'd get it in a heart beat. As far as the feel of thee phone, I wouldn't say it feels cheap and weak, but the evo had a sturdier feel, its hard to explain but its there.

oh im sure its low res for taht reason but the evo front cam is 1.3MP whereas the epic has a .3MP(?) but the issue at hand is simply hardware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8060299&postcount=3
he explains it in that post, samsung made a fairly large boo-boo with that
That's absolutely correct, quadrant score means nothing, especially the free edition. It only gives you the overall score and not a break down. We all know the epic has a higher res due to it's super amoled screen and it's gpu. The high score is def.ly due to the Gpu. You would need the break down of the different areas that were tested.

I was in the sprint store today and notice the Optimus S and was IMPRESSSED.
It's very responsive and smooth. I was really curious to why and after some research..
Qualcomm MSM7627 chipset with dual cores really help with graphics and games.
technical specs:
* Two ARM cores integrated into a single chip – a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor – for an unparalleled level of integration:
o 1. 600MHz applications processor with floating point unit and L2 cache
o 2. 400MHz modem processor
Finally Got it
Here's my video showcasing the SPEED of apps and games:

-1st app I launch was GoogleMaps, then Youtube, Angry Birds, and Burning Tires

Compared it side by side (I have overclocked hero)
What I liked..
-TONS faster than hero, website scrolling smmooooth
-It's only $50...
-3G so no $10 surcharge
-Slightly brighter
-I believe it was 512mb ram (hero has 256?)
-Doesn't feel cheap at all
What didn't liked...
-No led light, but there's some apps that can make your phone vibrate for notifications
-Fiberglass display (scratches easier, but will not crack if dropped)

i have both phones and i love the optimus. it loads up real fast compared to the hero. i will not get rid of my optimus unless it is for an evo. that is how good of a phone that i think it is. it also has alot hotter receiver in it and gets a signal in places that i couldn't before. overall i rate it an 8.5 out of 10

Mm, thats nice to hear. Maybe my mom would like an Optimus instead of her crappy blackberry.
Intersting, I didn't expect it to be that great! Now I'm looking forward to try one out
I was looking at the Optimus too. My heart REALLY wants an Evo but my head just cant justify paying for the 4g service when it's not in my area and probably wont be for a very long time.
I just bought this phone and I am in LOVE. It feels soo good in your hand, perfect weight and balance. The screen is vibrant, battery life good, and with froyo 2.2 it is amazingly buttery smooth. It makes the EVO seem like a goliath in a good way. Perfect phone and I've owned alot of phones. Now wheres our roms??!
My sister just got one of these and I was thoroughly surprises as well. The speed of this phone puts the hero to shame. Everything is fast and smooth with no lag anywhere. The scrolling the app drawer and most noticeably the typing are all fast and smooth. I'm running cm6.1 overlooked and here phone stock is 10 times better. Angry birds runs perfect on it and the gallery and camera have no hesitation when opening or being used. This is a good phone. I'm seriously considering buying it to hold over until another top of the line is released for gingerbread.

I was thinking about the lg. before we moved to verizon.. But since getting the droid incredible..I cant think of any android I would rather have atm..perfect size. and everything just blazes.. Sprint really needs something like the DINC without 4g.. etc,, cause they have a big hole in the android selection..
Those midrange.. like the sanyo and sammy. both suck.. basicly they need a evo with a smaller screen and no 3g. oh wait thats the DINC..lol
Thats the only thing I like bout verizon the selection... Sprint always has gaps.
But that lg does like pretty decent.. might tell my bro.. since he has one of my heros atm.. still have 2 in my dresser with my tp2 and a tour..

I just tried it at the store and completely agree, it's a suuuuuper fast and smooth experience. I don't know how they did it, but it's a joy to use.
I also agree with the comment above me. The Droid Incredible has the best balance of performance and physical size, and it would be awesome if Sprint had something similar without the 4G $10/mo surcharge.
At first I was a little iffy about letting a relative get the Optimus S before I got a chance to use it and read up on the drvice. Boy was I blown away by the phones speed and smoothness. Its a nice device that I wouldn't mind having for daily use.
Form factor is nice as well. It would be nice is a few showed up on eBay at a reasonable price,I'd be interested in getting one off contract to hold be over if I need a phone.

It will be $1.00 at Best Buy on Black Friday. I also saw something about it being FREE at Radio Shack.
I've been reading up on this phone all over on different forums and from what I've learned:
Rooting can be accomplished by using Z4Root from the Market - even after the recent OTA update.
The OTA update includes Swype.
No Flash yet. The GPU is fast enough, but apparently it isn't supported by Adobe. Not sure 100%, but the GPU may be missing a certain hardware component to allow for true GPU-accelerated Flash. It would explain part of the cheaper price.
I dont care how good it is, I will never in LIFE buy any LG phone i dont care how fast or sleek it is I just wont.....what.....I have my reasons lol. HTC for the win or samsung. That is all.

Agreed!
Haha, I agree on the HTC front - they know how to make a sweet phone, but have you seen the garbage that is the Samsung Intercept and Samsung Transform? Complete junk. The only I had two Samsung phones in my life - some old silver flip phone, and the A900 (best flip phone ever!), but as far as I can tell the only quality phone they make now is the Epic (and variants).
Samsung Intercept and Samsung Transform?

And Samsung Moment all use the same processor and have an OpenGL ready chipset and no OpenGL drivers. This makes the phones crap. The Intercept is also EVDO Rev.0 which I believe fixed the radio lock bug that plagued the Moment. The transform is Rev.A (without the radio lock) but the same attrocious OpenGL performance. Samsung has completely failed at producing decent mid and low range android devices. it's remarkable.
thats why sprint needs a middle of the ground high performer. like the htc incredible.. even though i hate verizon.. This phone has really impressed me so far..

I'm sure there are threads out there on this already, so I will make it short.
With the problems that the inspire has (bad internal antenna, sound quality, and so forth) is it worth switching to the Atrix, or should I head towards a different device? AT&T is pushing me for an early upgrade as I've exchanged 4 of the inspires for different reasons, and I'm not about to buy a phone that has a ton of issues.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
And, to add to it, I'm looking at the new Samsung Infuse, and the Captivate as a potential replacement. No reason to go back to a "regular" phone...

I would go with atrix. I would stay away from phones that utilize amoled screens because of their inability to display whites correctly, huge power consumption when displaying any color other than black, burn in issues and color oversaturation.

If you're happy to unlock BL and flash custom ROM then hell yes go for it. The hardware is excellent for the price and considerably futureproof (dual core 1Gb RAM = enough grunt for foreseeable future). It also has my ideal form factor (4").
However in its stock state I would recommend pretty much any other dual core phone aside from the LG2X. You'd be surprised how few people realise its dual core based on their impressions of the speed of the default launcher/home (ie its not that great unlike the immediate WOAH of SGS2 stock or the glitz of sense). Other minor niggles IMO include slightly buggy bluetooth (compared to my other droids), , power/usb is on the left, not bottom, and if you don't actually use the fingerprint reader feature, the power button placement is less than ideal.
Like I said thou once you custom ROM/kernel it absolutely flies
However to each their own, maybe you like motoblur (if I was addicted to social media I could see myself liking it a lot more) and don't mind the AT&T restrictions (no native SIP, have to pay for tethering).
Yep, bought one outright off contract today. Well worth it.
Stay away from Captivate
1. The Motorola Atrix is the best smart phone I ever had
2. The Samsung Captivate was the worst piece of crap I ever had. Went through 3 of them before finally giving up. Stay away from this one.

Well you're asking in atrix forum, so HE'LL NO, don't go for it. All jokes aside, its a worthy successor to The nexus one. Surprised me. Slcd is impressive. And blinding at lowest brightness. And once you unlock bootloader and root it, the least you can do is flash a stock rom minus some of the bloat to get your toes wet on how capable it is.

Atrix doesn't have any major issues if you ask me (antenna, sound quality are all great).
+ We have an unlocked bootloader and CM7 on the way. With vanilla android Atrix will be amazingly future proof.
Go for the ATRIX. Its totally worth the 4g and dual cores.

I have both atrix and inspire... The inspire has a much nicer ui tons of custom roms let's just say tons of eye candy it runs smoothly when overclocked mine is at 1.3ghz but can go up to 1.8ghz... Battery life sucks but can be tweaked for example my phone when asleep runs at a little over 300mhz and when on runs at 1.3ghz so it gives a full day with moderate use gps is the second best I've seen 1st being the Atrix of course solid build some say feels too heavy.. I like it.
My atrix like many people said is more future proof ui not so pretty great loud speaker comparable to the blackberry bold 9000 awesome GPS can't be beat by any mobile phone qhd display if you like that icons and keyboard seem soooo small after using the inspire for a while picture quality is grainy compared to inspire which is 8mp looks like iphone quality HD recording too me seems smoother on atrix... With the ui on the inspire it seems to do more then blur... Sense is integrated more with facebook and twitter in every aspect.. Sound on the headset on both devices are loud and clear so it's basically comes down to what you like

worth it. it's a different level than the inspire. high resolution qhd display (ebooks look gorgeous with all those pixels crammed in), first dual core in a smart phone, 4g, high capacity battery. i believe i read that it is the biggest on a smart phone to date.the specs alone put inspire down hard. and on top of that active indie devs? go for it dude.
don't let that massive screen on the infuse hypnotize you. compare the actual display resolution. a full web page renders better on atrix than anything else att offers

First of all, you're asking this in an Atrix Forum so I can only guess what most responses are going to be ; )
But seriously, I originally had an Inspire and I can honestly say that the Atrix has better functionality with battery life, screen resolution, call quality, etc. I would stay away from the Infuse since it has been rumored that AT&T's SGS2 variant should be out this month and they might also be offering a model with a pretty damn good looking keyboard on it as well.

Coming from a Nexus One, I tried an Infuse before I got the Atrix. It was slower than the N1, and it always lowered the brightness when used outdoors because of heat.

Lately I haven't been interested in trying any ROMs, none have really peaked my interest to be honest due to the little issues in them. Not sure what I should do from here......
End of small rant.
Anyone else feel the same way or am I alone?
I still love the phone but I am definitely getting a little bored with it. Same as with most things. After so long of use, it feels like it is time for something new.
I use MIUI and it seems the fastest and smoothest to me (probably as good as you can get on the hardware), so getting bored I try other ROMs but they aren't as smooth so I go back to MIUI. I think ICS might spice things up for a little while l, but I think an upgrade might help.

It's called "consumerism". Just use your DZ till it dies of a natural death >.>
i wasn't bored of it, i was simply tired of the lag, missed messages and genrally just the lack of RAM.
i took the plunge and moved to the desire HD (couldnt afford anything newer)
and i notice the difference in ram immediately, there are LOADS more apps open at once now, and everything just generally feels snappier. and even with all my apps open i have 100mb+ ram left, constantly,
it's a shame that the DZ didnt have more ram, because otherwise i think i could've stuck with it for so much longer.

Damnit I thanked instead of quoting at first. Oh well.
It's "piqued," FYI.
I still use mine all the time. I have ICS on it. And with supercharger it's plenty fast. And I can text sweet things to my gf much easier and quicker using the keyboard. That being said get a hercules and rock both.

What's with all of these posts really...If you're "tired" of the phone go buy another one and use this as a backup. A lot of people do it lately.
Sure - I would be happy to buy a new phone, just as soon as you can invent a phone that has the G2's reliability, developer support, style, at least as good of a real keyboard, display quality, and make sure it works with T-mobile so I can have unlimited everything, including wifi hotspot, free tethering and free wifi calling, and no overage charges possible for only $60/month no-contract!
Yeah, that's what I thought, the G2 has no upgrade that can be made, because it is the best phone/carrier combo out there!
But I do wish there was a magical way to have the reception in rural area and LTE deep building penetration that I envy on Verizon (but I don't envy paying nearly $200/month for the features listed above!)
Still love my phone since the day I got it. Reliable and tough, stylish and sleek. I do look forward to an upgrade, but it's not something that i'm set my heart to. Can't really beat the DZ =)
Can someone just lock this post? It's so silly to post stuff like this.
If you're tired of it, then get a new phone.
g2 has been an awesome phone especially for my first Android phone but I can't wait for the next g series or maybe I'll try out the gnex. Contracts not up till October so hopefully there'll be something cool out then
After a year of using something u naturally get bored of it but if ur that boored of it try getting a mytouch4gslide

Not bored,
I recently tried a few things to give my G2 a different look and feel. Here's what I have:
meXdroidMod Atomic ROM -- been using meXdroidMod for awhile now
GO Launcher EX ICS theme -- cool screen transitions, my favorite is sphere
GO Locker -- ICS style, and I don't have date and time showing
GO SMS Pro -- I have had this for awhile
GO Weather -- besides HD video background, I like the Temperature Trend among some of the other features
With a couple of apps and also creating shortcuts to access them easily and quickly, i find my G2 very useful and not boring. Now if only I had a bigger screen...
I never understood this emotion where people get bored of things and feel the need to get the newest stuff. To me, the G2 is a solid device and the only time I would ever think of changing is out of necessity: not so much boredom. If I needed a faster GPU or a larger screen or better speakers and so forth: I can definitely understand the decision then because you have a practical purpose for the future device. But to be bored of a device and wanting to upgrade for no other reason because of it is exactly what companies want you to do. convolution put it best, "consumerism", but I would also add the word "affluence" as well.

Lol you must be delusional. This is a great phone, but as soon as I find a nexus s I'm going back. Not only is the phone faster in both the CPU and gpu department, the wolfson sound chip is a god send for music lovers (the g2 can't power my 120$ Sony earbuds and as a result aren't as loud/bass cuts out at low frequencies) , you can't beat the samoled screen (after a little tweaking with voodoo colors it gives a better pq than my 40" ex400) and to top it off ics is smooth as a gyroscope. I can't tell a difference scrolling around home screens and menus compared to my buddies gnex. Dev support is off the charts. IMO the nexus s is the device to have over a gnex or gs2.

truth, it must be quoted. I've yet to see a newer phone with all the qualities I want in a phone. I'm extremely lucky that I got this phone with my family's contract, I had no idea of the developer support behind it when I did choose it.
G2 is my first android device too. And also one year I have been using it. I love my G2 just because it my "first time". I've tried almost every Rom from xda. And now using sense 3.5. But, frankly speaking, I'm considering t buy a new better one.

Wow, that audio chip intrigues me. I primarily use my phone as a music player at the gym and I like my music loud. However I get distortion when I try to adjust the frequencies past a certain point. Is this Wolfson chip a solution?
the best phone ever made is the T-mobile G2 (HTC Desire-Z) - if you can name a phone with as much style, reliability, developer support, wifi calling, REAL KEYBOARD, and has service for the tiny price of US$60/month unlimited everything with no contract, I will BUY IT and upgrade - problem is YOU CAN'T - so I will stick with the BEST PHONE on the PLANET!

there is nothing to challenge! (you would have to go and invent a new phone, and alas, no one has invented a phone to compete with it yet)
that phone's kind of bulky. Not to mention the slow processor. (Can be overclocked, sure. But so can other phones.)
Are you on T-mobile? are you even able to get their 4g Speed without 1700MHz HSDPA bandwidth?
the phone is SCARY FAST - don't be fooled by the processor speed!
and yes, it was the FIRST 4G phone - and can get 42MB 4G speeds, not quite as fast as some LTE phones though

you're right, it does have 1700/2100Mhz bandwidth. Sorry about that.
mm I don't have personal experience with it, but I'll take your word for it on the processing speed.
Mine doesn't crash at all as I'm running the ILWT custom ROM on it. The phone does get a little laggy after a while, but a simple reboot resolves that problem.
It's laggy, the first three I had had the hanging z hinges issue and the fourth a yellow screen, the battery life was terrible, the phone was fragile, 60 bucks only gets you so much 4g, then you're stuck on dial up speeds. Overall, not a worthy successor to the g1, the last truly revolutionary phone android had.
What's a G2?
You mean the phone with the weird hinge that dangle if you hold it face down? Lol. Overall it was good but isnt the best phone in deh world. Mytouch 4G IMO was the best overall phone I had back then, solid build quality, good cpu/gpu, plenty ram (768), physical camera buttons, good camera with led flash, ffc, 4g connectivity, trackpad, physical buttons, plenty of dev support. IMHO it had everything. Love my One X, but physical cam shutter button keeps it from Legendary status like my myTouch 4G was

the mytouch was good for it's time, definitely needed a battery overhaul though.
No thanks. Maybe a few years ago.

The ugly truth
I have had two G2's in the past and very recently changed to the HTC One S but my first G2 was replaced for a cracked screen. Somehow I cracked it while I fell asleep with it and had it replaced but my second G2 was a beast. It stood the test of time and took everything I threw at it. I even attempted to destroy it and deliberately threw it on the ground to bid it farewell to give me an excuse to get a new phone but the sucker would not die and the Z hinge took the beating. I have to say that it is indeed fast for its time. I had that phone over clocked at a constant 1.5 GHz and great battery life with ICS. I have even tried numerous Sense Roms but the roms were unstable and could not run well on the phone. I do blame the phone’s hardware for this however but anything other than Sense was fast and never had any issues with overheating if that makes a difference. Yes the phone is bulky and not very pretty to look at but it the plus side is that it was one of the easiest phones to root. I will miss it now that I will be sending it off for rebate but as they say… all good things come to an end or in this case the HTC One S takes over and destroys the G2. Sure it doesn’t have a full qwerty keyboard but I can live without that
Cheers
The haptic feedback on the G2 was pretty loud. Also the audio just wasn't that loud. However everything else like GPS, speed, durability is spot on. I should know: I have mines. 4EXT recovery is the best one out there: even better than CWM. My advice? If you can get a G2 on the cheap: do it. Just don't buy a case for the G2: it'll make texting harder.
OG look for the G2 is better anyways.

And this isn't in the G2 forum, why? Are you just waiting for someone to come along and challenge you so you can start an argument?

Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.

Agreed with the original post.
You'll say that I'm crazy, but here what I did:
I'm finding deals for smart phone and I buy them and some times I resell them.
I had : - motorola milestone
- Htc sensation 4g
- galaxy sII
- Nexus S
I tried each of them for more than a week. Guess what, I always come back to the g2.
the track pad is the main feature why I like it.

If I recall, it was 14, not 42. And as far as being first 4G, wasn't definition of 4G 100Mb and its all a marketing ploy?
