EVO 4G & Epic 4G Hanging out SIDE BY SIDE - EVO 4G General

Greetings All,
It's me again, last week I posted some side by side photos of the Evo 4G and the Droid X. This week we have two of sprint's 4G handset side by side, the HTC EVO 4G next to the Samsung Epic 4G.

You should try matching wallpapers to compare the difference between screens, but I think we all know the difference by now.

Could they make the SAMSUNG a bit bigger? Its kinda small as it is right now!!!

lol, you are spoil by our EVO Big Screen....

Yea, I will try it and post the pics, Got sooooooo many phones to play with on my job. Work in a technical support group so we all have the different high end phones from the various network...

A coworker here at the office told me she was all excited about her first Android phone and invited me to come see it. It's an Epic, the first one I've actually seen in person. I didn't want to rain on her parade so I kept my opinions to myself but all I could think was "You are still in your 30 days!! Take this POS back and get an EVO while you stil can!!!"
I am very surprised at what an awful device the Epic seems to be. I know opinions are like a-holes but mine is: The Epic doesn't hold a candle to the EVO and I have a hard time thinking of them as similar class phones. Samsung is a GREAT TV maker, if only they made phones as well as they make LCD TV's they would be a serious contender in the Smart Phone market. Too bad they are missing this boat (IMO)

First thanks OP for the pictures.
I had a chance to meet face to face with the Epic here is what I thought:
The screen is beautiful it's like looking at a highres photo. Simply amazing.
OK now that I have that out of the way. The device feels like a cheap kids toy. I kid you not in your hand it just feels like its going to break. It doesn't have that quality build feel of the EVO. The screen doesn't tilt, anyone who owned a TP2 knows what I'm talking about. The screen is small compared to the EVO. I don't care if its .3" or .9" its smaller by a long shot. Processor was slower than the EVO it scored like 954 in quadrant standard. I know it can be over clocked and it doesn't have FroYo so at best it will be as fast as the EVO. It did run 54 fps avg with about 4 or 5 stdev out of the box.
Got to go so I don't have time to proof read my statement, thread grammar checkers let me know.

nicely done op! i really like seeing a side-by-side comparison. even though i like the physical keyboard, i don't like how thick it is! i'm sticking with my EVO. it's just so sexy.
P.S. the samsung owner should check their voicemails!!

give it some time man, here is a a screen shot of the epic in quadrant
we only have stock 2.1 right now and if your looking for a base value look at the nexus one pre 2.2 and compare it to froyo nexus one. that is a substantial jump in score, perhaps when we get 2.2 it will indeed be as fast as the evo (with froyo) but is there a base score for evo on 2.1?
im not looking to pick a fight here but how exactly does it feel like your going to break it in your hand? im curious to known what kind of punishment your dealing to your poor phone that you would break it just by normal use..
not really sure why on the epic forum we have a lot of evo users coming in to complain about how the epic is a pile of crap (sorry dont check the evo boards so i dont know if there has been "counter" attacks) but why cant we all just get along as android brothers and enjoy 4g speeds together?
*EDIT* found some people from way back when teh evo was first released getting about 560ish on quadrant with stock 2.1, linpack gave yall 5.8 pretty decent compared to my old htc hero's 5.2. so the point of all this is just give it some time guys and we can both be on froyo

My post was not a personal attack just an opinion. Come on you know what cheap feels like don't kid yourself. And no the EVO did not score 560ish before OC and Froyo I believe it was around 900ish. Also I did state that they would probably be with in range of each other. We can all get along but we also have to deal with each other short comings such as the EVO GPU not being as good as the Epic. Soon dual and quad cores will be out. Last I am in the EVO forum.

oh i know we are, but as a person who browses the epic forums quite a bit there is a good number of people badmouthing the epic, wasnt directing that towards you i know your post was just an honest opinion. some evo users apparently have "iphone user syndrome" and cant fathom another device being close to their holy grail.
i personally am not looking forward to the dual cores as things are the evo and epic (out of the box) suffer from horrid battery life, yet that hasnt stopped samsung from working on the orion chip (1ghz dual core, claims to have 5x the power of the hummingbird).
havent had any complaints about cheapness for my phone, it looks and feels solid in my hands, got a nice bit of weight on it, not too far off from my hero. my first complaint about it was location of usb port and lack of hardware buttons. after owning the phone for a bit i can honestly say im very disappointed with the front camera, it is horridly cropped and such a low res it looks deformed when trying to use qik, (got plenty of issues with qik too but thats the app makers fault there).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695703
in this post shows a comparison of the hero vs the evo, and the evo stock is getting 544 on quadrant. once you guys have oc it got a bit better and of course froyo, i can only hope we get the same lovins

We both love our phones that's a win. I think the front cameras low resolutions are done so when using apps like qik they won't use tons of bandwidth and will semi work on 3G.

Heh. Fans of the Epic probably shouldn't post in a thread within the EVO forums. EVO users tend to think it's the best phone in the world. I just think it's a slightly upgraded HTC desire
But I don't know how you can say that the Epic doesn't hold a candle to the EVO. I own both, and I prefer my Epic. If the difference was that big, I never would have considered the Epic But I like my EVO enough to not get rid of it. I just can't. But it sits around for the most part It just doesn't excite me.

all hail evo
It is the best phone in the world....until the next phone I want is released. I give it until Q1 2011.

The screen looks so much better on the epic

Not sure where you guys are getting those quadrant scores... I have a rooted evo running... whatever rooted (but stock RUU that came out 6 weeks ago or so) and my Quadrant score is 540-560 all the time.
Picked up an Epic for my wife (she has to have a physical keyboard) and it scores in the high 800's low 900's stock.
Would love to boost my evo. Refuse to update to FROYO until the calendar and Gmail push bugs are addressed though.

Quadrant scores mean nothing anyways. Screen on epic does look great at times but that screen door effect its really evident at times as well.
My buddy has the epic and if I didn't have an evo I'd get it in a heart beat. As far as the feel of thee phone, I wouldn't say it feels cheap and weak, but the evo had a sturdier feel, its hard to explain but its there.

oh im sure its low res for taht reason but the evo front cam is 1.3MP whereas the epic has a .3MP(?) but the issue at hand is simply hardware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8060299&postcount=3
he explains it in that post, samsung made a fairly large boo-boo with that

That's absolutely correct, quadrant score means nothing, especially the free edition. It only gives you the overall score and not a break down. We all know the epic has a higher res due to it's super amoled screen and it's gpu. The high score is def.ly due to the Gpu. You would need the break down of the different areas that were tested.

Engadget: Epic 4G review, EVO still #1

from http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/epic-4g-review
"So is it the right phone for the job? In a word, yes -- the Epic 4G is a great device. Killer, even. Nothing speaks to us more strongly during the course of a review than finishing it and saying, "alright, I'm ready to buy this thing," and the Epic is on the short list of phones that has managed to do it. More than its Galaxy S siblings, it feels like the Epic has overcome its shortcomings -- notably the forgettable UI skin -- to shine, and it's a phone we could easily imagine using day to day. Only thing is, the EVO is also on that short list for us -- and the better camera, bigger screen, and $50 savings versus the Epic still make it our winner in this 4G shootout, though only by the thinnest of margins. Needless to say, if you need a physical keyboard and you're looking for the one of the most musclebound Android phones money can buy, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it."
I've been thinking about switching over to the Epic but the GPS problems found on all the Galaxy S phones along with Samsung's bad reputation for slow if any updates make me really appreciate how awesome the Evo/HTC really is

But the Evo and iPhone 4 got the same score.
They really aren't as bad as some other news blogs out there (Gizmodo).
How many Epic threads do we need in an Evo forum? Are we going to have a separate thread for the Gizmodo review?
i played with a epic today, i wont be switching from my evo...
Engadget? -- Really? -- They're not even fully aware of GPS problems that are affecting the Galaxy S line of phones -- in short, completely disregard their reviews because -- Engadget isn't playing with a full deck -- don't let your love for HTC cloud your objectivity.
Hopefully I used -- enough.

The Gizmodo article needs its own thread actually...unlike this one..I mean in the Gizmodo article..now don't get a heart attack...only time it compared the Epic to the iphone 4 was to say that the Epic is better at it...when I saw that my jaw dropped....if anyone doesn't believe me read the article...
That said samsung said GPS will be fixed in September..so thats withing the 30 days of the Epic..so if necessary it ca be returned if GPS is a concern.
As for the Engadget review..only reason it got an 8/10 over a 9/10 was due to the 50$ extra..so its not that its a worse phone.it just costs 50$ more...

They amended the review at Engadget after talking to Samsung. The Epic ships with AGPS turned off. Once it was activated, they said things look fine.
Apparently google is requiring this to be off by default now. Must be a privacy thing, because I can't see a logical reason to reduce functionality otherwise.
Most buyers will never turn it on, and will assume their phone navigation sucks.
We see who is lurking in the background:

Considering the Epic *****ing when the evo was released about all the bone headed issues HTC still have not fixed I don't think anyone can point a finger at samsung. The Epic is slated for 2.2 in September and a GPS fix.
Without root and custom roms the EVO, for a power user, is a POS.
Talk about construction issues. Different parts of varying capability and quality. Different screens, different multitouch sensors etc its like they took all the extra parts they had lying around and stuffed them into the cases.
Light leakage, screens lifting etc... FPS fix? SD cards corrupted? Touch input lag? Grounding issues? Thank God for XDA and some updates.
The EVO shipped with far more wrong that the epic. This is coming from an EVO owner. If the worst thing wrong with the Samsung is a GPS issue that will get fixed and touch wiz lag (Which you can remove without a custom rom unlike HTC sense) then they are a few steps ahead of where we were at release.
Also it seems the 1gb of storage may entirely be NAND fixing the app lag from the vibrant and other Galaxy S devices. From Slash gear's review:
Happily, while use of the Galaxy S series was punctuated with freezes and pauses, anecdotally blamed upon the handsets’ use of an internal microSD card for their onboard storage, the Epic 4G seems generally free of such lag.
Click to collapse
It's still "Internal SD" from what I can see, we (Captivate/Vibrant) don't have the newer firmware (yet) that eliminates lag when going back to the homescreen or when opening apps.
Got a chance to compare them side by side today and I have to say I highly prefer the EVO, the Samsung has a smaller screen yet the device is bigger and bulkier than the EVO. The UI looks like something designed by a 5 year old with a box of crayons. I guess if you really need a hard keyboard the Epic would be the only route you can take but the keyboard works great on the EVO so I actually prefer the slimmer device rather than a bulky 90's esque slide out keyboard phone. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would want an Epic over an EVO but I imagine some Epic owners feel the same way about the EVO. Regardless there is not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever own an Epic over an EVO The only other phone I might choos is iPhone 4 but with it's tiny screen and lack of widgets the whole thing just seems like outdated technology, I think Apple has alot of catching up to do to win me back from the EVO/Android.

agreed, i played with our demo epic all day today, and honestly, im not that impressed. It is a VERY nice screen, but as stated all over, colors look highly over saturated, and text is grainy because of it. I am envious of the 60fps when scrolling through menus, but thats ALL. Touchwiz is a JOKE. The capacitive android buttons work when they want to, cameras are much lower quality, and the screen is smaller. MY unbiased opinion? I think the epic is better for the GENERAL public out of the box vs the evo. That being said, For us XDA people, The evo is still the clear winner. Ill take my over clocked custom rom'd up ass evo ANYDAY over the epic. GO HTC!

"Oversaturated"? Riiight. I'm guessing those true black levels are highly exaggerated too.
I am within 30 days of return date for my evo and was considering making the switch but the reviews make it easier for me to stick to the evo
With fresh Rom and havs kernel my battery life is fine and I don't really think I would ever use the horizontal hardware keyboard
If it was a vertical keyboard maybe since id be able to use it one handed
The screen is nice but from looking at the vibrant it had a blueish hue I did not care for. Additionally the pentile matrix display made text a bit tough to read from anything but zoomed in levels

Thinking about trading your vibrant for the mytouch hd? Read this

I'm sitting here playing with the mytouch hd side by side with the vibrant and there were a few things that I noticed:
1. The mytouch hd's screen is horribly unresponsive compared to the vibrant's buttery smooth super AMOLED.
2. The mytouch hd's screen is also not as bright and "vibrant" in color as the vibrant.
3. The mytouch hd's form is horrible. It seems as if htc was trying to combine blocky and smooth. Its just uncomfortable to grip. The vibrant's is more comfortable due to its round edges.
4. I'm am impatient guy. This phone is slow. Switching out of apps and even waking up.
5. The linpack score is surprising for froyo with jit compiler....I averaged around 3.8 - 4.1 MFLOPS........now that, is pathetic.

Okay, now the purpose of this thread is not to bash the mytouch hd, but to help keep the vibrant community large. The concept of the phone is great (FFC, froyo, HSDPA+). The vibrant could use these "things" but I don't think one should switch from the vibrant to a mediocre phone that has an extra feature or two, but lacks in other areas...In conclusion, the vibrant IS the best phone t-mobile owns, despite the failed upstagers

How did you get it to test with?
I don't see the MyTouch as better or worse as a phone... I see it as different and being bundled with some features that the Vibrant doesn't have to give it a niche.
I handled the phone for a minute or two at a local T-mobile. It is noticeably heavier than the Vibrant. The screen is alright, but not quite as nice as the Vibrant's.
I didn't notice a speed difference, but then I didn't get to play with it for long.
The major selling point for the MyTouch will be the front facing camera and the lack of TouchWiz. HSDPA+ might be a selling point for some people, but not for me... tower-to-phone transfer rates are not usually my bottleneck when surfing.
T-mobile is launching their tethering service along with the phone ($14.99 a month for a feature that your phone can already do).
I agree that the MyTouch is a poor choice for an upgrade from a Vibrant. Better to wait until December or even Jan/Feb to see if any Gingerbread phones are released.
If you are upgrading from a G1, then the MyTouch is certainly worth a look. HTC is usually pretty good about updating their devices, so you can be reasonably certain that the device will get at least the next release of Android.

At the corporate stores for T-Mobile there is a MyTouch champion at each one, they've had the device for a few days now. My guess is that's how he's using one, either himself or a friend is such said "champion".
What would make the mflops so low? I thought it had similar internals to the g2, but with more ram?
Either way, I'll be envious of the options it has (ffc, hspa+, flash) but not enough to want to change from my vibrant. Same goes for the g2 and "nexus 2".
Sent from my Team Whiskey Powered Vibrant
First of all it is called the MyTouch 4G, not the HD.
Secondly, I am sure the Linpack mflops score is a fluke. Actually 100 percent certain once it is officially for sale, you are going to see crazy high Linpack scores.
And lastly, just call your local T-Mobile, if the employee is nice you can already go in and they will pull it out of their secret drawer and let you play with it.
The ffc looks badly out of place.

I've gotten to use the phone as well. It seemed just as quick as my vibrant. I didn't do any benchmarks, but intensive apps like angry birds and such loaded with about a 1 second difference, in favor of the mytouch. Although im sure i didnt open them exactly at the same time. I completely agree on the screen though. It looks really faded and washed out. I toyed around with the settings as much as I could and just couldn't get the screen to look any better. It's like they wonked out the contrast. The build quality is solid, but it seems pointlessly heavier too. It felt nearly as heavy as the g2 which doesn't make sense for a phone without a phys kb imo
That is where the ffc is...

I tried the myTouch, it's not all that. The reception was below that of my Vibrant on JI6 (dropped to EDGE often) and the screen did look extremely dull. Also it was kind of blocky feeling because of the white rim and the indentation on the side. Otherwise it's nice, I'm sure the speakerphone sucked though. The speaker on the Vibrant is really good, there is a lot of detail for such a small underpowered speaker (when listening to music of course). Also I'm 100% positive that the Vibrant is way better for music and video.

**Video and Benchmark Uploaded** anyone considering LG Optimus S? I'm impressed

I was in the sprint store today and notice the Optimus S and was IMPRESSSED.
It's very responsive and smooth. I was really curious to why and after some research..
Qualcomm MSM7627 chipset with dual cores really help with graphics and games.
technical specs:
* Two ARM cores integrated into a single chip – a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor – for an unparalleled level of integration:
o 1. 600MHz applications processor with floating point unit and L2 cache
o 2. 400MHz modem processor
Finally Got it
Here's my video showcasing the SPEED of apps and games:

Compared it side by side (I have overclocked hero)
What I liked..
-TONS faster than hero, website scrolling smmooooth
-It's only $50...
-3G so no $10 surcharge
-Slightly brighter
-I believe it was 512mb ram (hero has 256?)
-Doesn't feel cheap at all
What didn't liked...
-No led light, but there's some apps that can make your phone vibrate for notifications
-Fiberglass display (scratches easier, but will not crack if dropped)

i have both phones and i love the optimus. it loads up real fast compared to the hero. i will not get rid of my optimus unless it is for an evo. that is how good of a phone that i think it is. it also has alot hotter receiver in it and gets a signal in places that i couldn't before. overall i rate it an 8.5 out of 10

Mm, thats nice to hear. Maybe my mom would like an Optimus instead of her crappy blackberry.
Intersting, I didn't expect it to be that great! Now I'm looking forward to try one out
I was looking at the Optimus too. My heart REALLY wants an Evo but my head just cant justify paying for the 4g service when it's not in my area and probably wont be for a very long time.
I just bought this phone and I am in LOVE. It feels soo good in your hand, perfect weight and balance. The screen is vibrant, battery life good, and with froyo 2.2 it is amazingly buttery smooth. It makes the EVO seem like a goliath in a good way. Perfect phone and I've owned alot of phones. Now wheres our roms??!
My sister just got one of these and I was thoroughly surprises as well. The speed of this phone puts the hero to shame. Everything is fast and smooth with no lag anywhere. The scrolling the app drawer and most noticeably the typing are all fast and smooth. I'm running cm6.1 overlooked and here phone stock is 10 times better. Angry birds runs perfect on it and the gallery and camera have no hesitation when opening or being used. This is a good phone. I'm seriously considering buying it to hold over until another top of the line is released for gingerbread.

I was thinking about the lg. before we moved to verizon.. But since getting the droid incredible..I cant think of any android I would rather have atm..perfect size. and everything just blazes.. Sprint really needs something like the DINC without 4g.. etc,, cause they have a big hole in the android selection..
Those midrange.. like the sanyo and sammy. both suck.. basicly they need a evo with a smaller screen and no 3g. oh wait thats the DINC..lol
Thats the only thing I like bout verizon the selection... Sprint always has gaps.
But that lg does like pretty decent.. might tell my bro.. since he has one of my heros atm.. still have 2 in my dresser with my tp2 and a tour..

I just tried it at the store and completely agree, it's a suuuuuper fast and smooth experience. I don't know how they did it, but it's a joy to use.
I also agree with the comment above me. The Droid Incredible has the best balance of performance and physical size, and it would be awesome if Sprint had something similar without the 4G $10/mo surcharge.
At first I was a little iffy about letting a relative get the Optimus S before I got a chance to use it and read up on the drvice. Boy was I blown away by the phones speed and smoothness. Its a nice device that I wouldn't mind having for daily use.
Form factor is nice as well. It would be nice is a few showed up on eBay at a reasonable price,I'd be interested in getting one off contract to hold be over if I need a phone.

It will be $1.00 at Best Buy on Black Friday. I also saw something about it being FREE at Radio Shack.
I've been reading up on this phone all over on different forums and from what I've learned:
Rooting can be accomplished by using Z4Root from the Market - even after the recent OTA update.
The OTA update includes Swype.
No Flash yet. The GPU is fast enough, but apparently it isn't supported by Adobe. Not sure 100%, but the GPU may be missing a certain hardware component to allow for true GPU-accelerated Flash. It would explain part of the cheaper price.
I dont care how good it is, I will never in LIFE buy any LG phone i dont care how fast or sleek it is I just wont.....what.....I have my reasons lol. HTC for the win or samsung. That is all.

Agreed!
Haha, I agree on the HTC front - they know how to make a sweet phone, but have you seen the garbage that is the Samsung Intercept and Samsung Transform? Complete junk. The only I had two Samsung phones in my life - some old silver flip phone, and the A900 (best flip phone ever!), but as far as I can tell the only quality phone they make now is the Epic (and variants).
Samsung Intercept and Samsung Transform?

And Samsung Moment all use the same processor and have an OpenGL ready chipset and no OpenGL drivers. This makes the phones crap. The Intercept is also EVDO Rev.0 which I believe fixed the radio lock bug that plagued the Moment. The transform is Rev.A (without the radio lock) but the same attrocious OpenGL performance. Samsung has completely failed at producing decent mid and low range android devices. it's remarkable.
thats why sprint needs a middle of the ground high performer. like the htc incredible.. even though i hate verizon.. This phone has really impressed me so far..

A Sprint branded Desire Z/G2 would be really, really nice. I think Cyanogen said the G2 totally blows away his previous N1.

Evo is so much better than the Epic

I've had an Evo for about 6 months now and i've always loved this phone. However my evo broke and sprint offered to give me an epic 4g, so i said ok. After using it for about 4 days i missed my evo so much. This is why:
Cons:
Ecic doesn't have Android 2.2
Battery lasted about 8 hours on standby ( my evo lasts 28 hours )
Keyboard didn't always register when I hit keys
Screen is smaller
Power button is on the right of the phone so when you hold it in your hand you sometimes hit it with your fingers
Pros:
Screen is LED and looks amazing.
I would give up the LED screen any day for the Evo.
Yes I didn't like the epic either.

I prefer the Plasma screen on my EVO.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
Voted thread to front page.
Epic user here...
My best friend has an EVO so I actually get a bit of time to compare them side by side... I agree with some of your comments.
Epic has much better support for various kinds of video formats... kind of a minor pro depending on how much you use video on your phone.
Epic is by far faster in anything 3d and in general it has felt smoother in every day use
Epic has Gorilla Glass. It just feels different in your hands and feels a little bit better to "swype" on.
Evo is well built... my epic is not. My screen is loose and it wobbles.
Evo is thinner (no keyboard) ... I hate my physical keyboard
Evo has a much better dev community
I honestly wish neither existed and we just had or a CDMA version of the SGS i-9000, or cdma Nexus S.
The Galaxy S hardware is slick and when it doesn't have a physical keyboard it's a really sweet profile. I really think a CDMA Nexus S would bridge the gap between the EVO and Epic and be a truly great phone for Sprint... too bad, so sad

I went back to the sprint store and changed it back out for an evo.
I also agree with you snowmanwithahat.
The epic seems faster even though it has 2.1 and the browser seems faster too, but it doesnt have flash and when loading a site with no flash, the evo and the epic load at the same time.
The evo feels better in your hand and the battery lasts alot longer
I had an Epic as a loaner while my Evo was being sent to HTC for repairs, and I hated the Epic. It's ONE pro, was that the screen was nice (but even that was a con when red or orange were on the screen and looked overly boosted).
Things I hated:
Going back to 2.1
GPS took forever to lock on
It locked up pretty regularly for a few seconds for no reason at all
I had less bars
The whole top of it felt wobbly, like the physical keyboard was trying to slide out.
It didn't play files through Rockplayer as well as the Evo does.
I love the looks of the Nexus S, and without Touchwiz, it's probably a whole different phone, but overall, my opinion of Samsung phones is still pretty low.
i wonder what phones going to win in a poll started in the evo section... hmmmmm
i love the EVO.. sammy sucks.
but of course your poll will be a little scewed .. bing in an EVO section.
Yeah I hate Samsung. They never push out updates and their phones always break. HTC for the win. I WILL NEVER GO BACK
And Samsung's support sucks.
Has anyone noticed that the Epic is WAY faster, even with 2.1 than our Evos running 2.3?
My brother has an Epic and the UI and browser is buttery-smooth. I wonder if that is because it uses hardware graphics acceleration in the UI, or because the CPU is so much better?
Either way, it's almost painful to use my Evo after using his epic

Android isn't fully HW accelerated but parts of it are. The Epic's GPU is significantly faster. For reference:

If the GUI isn't really hardware (GPU) accelerated, then what difference does it make? Did Samsung add some sort of GPU support to the GUI?

The processor is supposed to be better. Samasung is always at the top in hardware but always at the bottom in software. HTC is just perfect
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.

Like I said, parts of Android are indeed HW accelerated and I'm not talking about Honeycomb. An Android team developer mentioned this a while back, although parts = not a lot. And I do think that Samsung added some things too, I remember reading about the browser being HW accelerated.

Well. Lots of things. You don't get the official update. This is BIG. In evo forums, some use sense(based on OTA'S) and some use cm7. Also, if you wanna talk about only the people that root their phones, evo has A CRAP LOAD more development going. Its ridiculous.
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.

What am I going to do now?

I bet I am not the only one feeling like this is the end of the line for my EVO.
I got MikG 2.1 on my phone and it is basically running as good as the hardware will let the EVO run. What now? I have been flashing OSs since the Blackberry days and I feel a big let down. I don;t see me going to the EVO 3D as it would not really improve my EVO experience all that much. I use my phone for business and personal stuff and it is doing a very good job.
What now???
I would go for the Galaxy S II when it comes out, or something else, since good things are coming.
The Galaxy SII looks good but I have not had very good luck with Samsung phones. SMH
As crazy as it might sound, I would consider going back to a Blackberry if they came out with a 4" plus screen. Like a Storm4. Crazy right? LOL
I feel the same way, on MikG 2.1 as well. The phone is just working too well to mess with! Can't complain about that. Don't worry though, just like with the hero ROMs and improvements will keep coming. The EVO is just in a weird place because handsets are more powerful now, it is a year old, and still keeps up rather than being totally outdated.

Very weird; I had to use my sister's Blackberry when my first Evo went missing, then got a replacement; I hated it, little keyboard, had to go all backways just to get something simple, like an alarm, and had to use the calendar to have more than one.
Personally, I would recommend you at least try the Galaxy S II; I've had good experiences with Samsung products [for what its worth], the phone will be a powerhouse, and if you don't like it, can always return it within the 30 days.

I still have my evo. I'm currently stripping it down to barebones and using my tablet for everything else. I was working on an updated gingerbread rom but those plans have changed now. The evo is still a great device as a phone and as a smartphone. It's just a shame people jumped ship just to have the latest and greatest. I simply just added what I wanted which was the htc evo view tablet.
I would go to a Sprint store or Radio shack and play with the Evo 3D. I thought i wouldn't like it after seeing all the negative reviews, but when I played with it in person, I was really impressed. Just seemed way better than I thought, and I even dig the 3D now.
I just posted my Evo on Craigslist a few minutes ago. If I get a buyer, I'll go get the 3D. Thought about waiting for the GS2, but not really a fan of Samsung phones...and the development community the 3D seems to be building up outweighs the specs for me.

The 3D is a really fast phone, played around with it yesterday but other then that I see no reason to pick it up. If it's not broken why mess with it?
Yeah some of the devs have moved onto the 3D, but this phone is far from dead. Let the excitement die down a bit and you will have plently of roms to flash in the future.

That's sidestepping the question though. He didn't ask what the difference was. He asked what could it do the Evo couldn't? Having a longer battery life is certainly nice, though. But as of right now, I can't see the dual core and ram being useful... maybe in six months?

Must of misread the question. The dual core plus more ram will be a huge factor on how much faster roms will run once these devs get root access. It will totally blow the Evo out of the water in that aspect for sure.

Lol no I've had a g2x dual core overclocked to 1.5ghz
Then moved to Sprint .. got the EVO 4G..
Now I have the EVO 3d.. even with "development" nothing will be much faster
We need ice cream to utilize the dual core/adreno220 chip set...
As for more RAM.... Hardly I'm at 122-200 mbs free... That means over 70% is being used for sense 3.0 and OS...
Honestly I'm selling my EVO 3d for a EVO 4g and a laptop in two days.... Don't bother with this 3vo as they call it... It honestly isn't much of an improvement
The only thing I can seeing it be good with is a stock aosp ROM like miui or cm

I am beginning to think the same way. I would not watch 3D movies on my EVO or take 3D videos. As tot he dual processor, what exactly will that do for me? Get my emails faster? Dial out faster? Surf the internet faster? Not unless we get steady 4G speeds or even really good 3G speeds. On wifi my EVO flies and does pretty good when I get good 3G service. So I am not sure what I would gain. I know when I went from Storm1 to Storm2 it was supposed to be such a big improvement but I did not see that much. I like Sense so I am not sure if I would go to Samsung but never know. I think I would switch more for longer battery life if a phone came out with that kind of technology. But, I don't see how these faster processors are going to help with that.
