Hello new to the forum and just got my new HD mini a few days ago. I have seen many post about the HVGA resolution and app compatibility. But cold some one tell me why it is HVGA? I mean my old I-Mate Ultimate 6150 has a 2.8in screen and a resolution of 640 x 480. So why does the Mini have 320 X 480?
BTW I love my new Mini.
HVGA eats battery less
and a bit cheaper for HTC to build
hmmm..i'm not agree about battery thing..it drains pretty fast
So is it the screen itself that is not capable of higher resolutions or is it software?
The first one.
Thank you for the info. Can you explain why?

I notice the screen resolution is actually higher than 640 x 480 because you can tell when a LCD is running at its native resolution or not. The image should be bright and crispy. I also have a friend who told me the same thing that our Athena should be 800 x ???, anyone can confirm that?
I see Sharp can support 800 x ??? for their upcoming PDA phone, so it is possible that HTC's next upgrade is taking us to 800 X 600?? Anyone can confirm that, too?

I am sure it's only 640 x 480; although the image looks sharp and beautiful on Athena, but that's just because it has a better screen, the resolution is only 640 x 480, you can see that if you compare to Universal, the font on Athena actually look unclear and have edges compare to Universal. They both have the same resolution, but Athena's screen is bigger so that's why you see the edges
I tested the video performance, and compared it with my three handhelds (HTC Touch Pro, HTC Universal and Samsung Omnia.)
Test performed on a 3 min music video (480x640, 25 fps, 44100 Hz, 574 kbit/s), with coreplayer 1.2.5, and optimal settings for each device:
Omnia:
Raw framebuffer: 442.74%
Universal:
Direct Draw: 165.28%
Touch Pro:
QTv display: 152.44%
Smooth Zoom and Dither turned off on each device!
So in conclusion, Omnia wins by a huge 277.46% over the next best device that is the Universal. And even then the Universal is 12.84% better then the Touch Pro!
Please bare in mind that the Universal is a three years old device with only 64MB ram, while Touch pro is brand new and 288MB ram! They have same clock speed but Touch pro is supposed to have a better/newer chipset then the Universal!
There is no doubt in my mind anymore, Touch pro is missing the video drivers, or could it just be that qualcomm chipset just sucks?
Why am I posting this here? Well, becouse I was considering buying the HD, but sense it has the same specs as the Touch Pro and even bigger resolution screen, I just dont know! I fear that it is going to be as crappy in performance as the TP, if not even worse?
Please help me out here guys!
Touch Pro ?
Coreplayer does not yet have hardware support for the QTV chipset in HTC Touch HD. It will get soon however according to this thread and then the performance will improve a lot.

Also the built-in Windows Media Player uses hardware acceleration. It is a bit limited in the codecs it support however.

I currently have, an omnia, an iPhone, a TyTN II, & 3x Touch HD's( long story) but I find video playback on just looks alone the iphone looks the best ( bear in mind you have to convert video for the iphone though as in it can't play your standard xvid files). Touch HD would be my overall winner because on looks alone it is very close to the iphone but it plays files converted for the iphone as well as xvid & divx movies. Depending on the movie I have noticed some caching but if you follow the sticky you can clear this up. The Omnia follows but imho the video quality is not as good as the HD, not to mention I had quite a few problems with mines with a total of 8x replacements not to mention the weekly rom updates thanks to secany, but overall the HD is the best phone I've had so far.
Peter.

These are 2 different phones with also a different O.S. installed. The omnia HD has Simbian instead Touch HD Win Mobile. However as regards the screen, the Omnia has a lower resolution than the Touch hd (640x360 vs 800x480) but the former has an Oled screen (which is a little more luminous and with more vivid colors) instead the latter has a classical TFT.
In my opinion the touch HD is still (and for a while) unbeatable.
Really the best phone I've ever had!!!
too cool, versatile and professional!!
can touch hd do 640 x 480 video, searched forum but cant find much
No it can't, due to hardware limitations.
when will htc ever learn
they haven't changed this since the spv original
were in the age of hd recording for f****k sake
sorry for language just irritating, main reason I moved to symbian devices is that they had better day to day big standard camera with reasonable quality
htc always lags behind in camera department
640 x 480 is not really HD
but x1 which is made by htc do 640 x 480 in 30fps I read
think is that a lawsuit between qualcomm and broadcom mean that
qualcomm cpu's which htc use a lot can't be sold in USA
so the remove the feature
Hello
I am confused between Aria or Wildfire
they both have the same specifications and same price
only few diffrent things
Wildfire have
16M colors
240 x 320 pixels
LED flash
Qualcomm MSM 7225 528 MHz processor
Aria have
256K colors
320 x 480 pixels
no flash
Qualcomm MSM 7227 600 MHz processor
they are both unlocked
so what do you advice me to buy
and thank you
for me ill go for HTC Aria since now it is not for AT&T only. Why? Because Aria have a better resolution w/c is HVGA, camera flash is not a big deal for me
Although Aria only have 256k colors, the screen is too bright since HVGA is good on 3.2" screen
Another thing, Aria have VGA @30fps video rec0rding while Wildfire only have CIF @15fps video rec0rding.
Regarding the price, Aria is much price higher than the Wildfire.
can i install games and apps like the disire on it ?
I am in the same situation as you. If the Aria comes to Europe and has a good price (read: lower than Legend) I`ll go for it because it`s simply better than Wildfire. If not... Wildfire for me.
I would go for the Aria. It seems better than the Wildfire.
another thing again, Aria have a better camera quality than Wildfire
I like the Aria, hope it will launch on Philippines before last week of October
